Combat is the most important feature in a game figuring as its the one feature you're doing over the half time.

I would argue that combat is not the most important feature. It has become the biggest feature, and primary focus of a MMO game. By extension, it has become important.

It didn't need to be this way - but it happened. MMO games held unfulfilled promises about a magical interactive online world populated by other people like you who have similar interests, and found these places fascinating to explore, flourish in, and conquer.

Yes -  a massive amount of time in game is combat. Since nothing better came along, combat was the one that survived, evolved and won. I believe this is why we have wow clone debates.

World's became smaller, segmented, and instanced, in spite of having years of technology improvements. Content became condensed through fast travel, checklists, quick consumption and linear progression. I am not saying that everything should be unending worlds of immeasurable adventure. I am saying, not everything has to be like what we have.

It's not that everything is like WOW. It's that WOW and other similar titles dictated the direction, paved the road, mapped it out, available for all to license and GPS along to. Nobody has figured out how to successfully slow down or brake and change the course, or better yet - get lost again.

It isn't an easy answer. I like ESO, I think Wildstar is fine. Neither one are risk takers to me, in any estimation of the word.

A game player looks at the risk/reward systems put into a game and how they affect the play. A developer/publisher looks at the same risk/reward systems by how much ROI they can expect.

There are not more spammers then in any other popular mmo...

Just keep reporting them...  And stop buying stuff from them..

Zenimax needs to add better authentication services, preventing accounts from being hacked... So they can not be abused to spam...

Agreed, it's just about ridiculous to not have 2-factor authentication in 2014.

I think Zenimax needs to be more proactive instead of relying on player reports to deal with bots ....

If you'd read the patch notes you would have seen they are going to put dungeon bosses on a timer as regards picking loot up from them, and they cite this action as a response to player feedback.\

All it would take is one person watching chat and instant-banning gold spammers to make it stop.  I've played another game where they did it and it worked.  It might take a little more effort to catch botters, but I don't agree that changing loot timers is an effective method of stopping them.

If the boss mobs are put on a loot timer, it's a huge step in the right direction. Iit means instead of standing there killing the boss every 60 seconds and looting it they would only be able to get the loot drop once per X hours.  I'd say that's a significant discouragement to people farming in order to get mats to get gold.

Note this is not a timer on the boss SPAWNING, it's a timer on how often the boss can be LOOTED.

Is this an individual timer or global? Meaning, my first run into dungeon I miss the timer and do not get loot? Individual makes sense, I explore for first time kill boss and get loot, leave. Might be more complex on the programming side?

Patch your game- Start Game, then play the credits and enjoy the epic music....

That's Malukah. She's amazing. The song is Beauty of Dawn. She also does an awesome Ebonheart Pact song call Three Hearts as one.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lPPNJCPHDY - Three Hearts as One

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zXdbKz5u-a4  - Beauty of Dawn

http://www.malukah.com

Did she do a song in the Beowulf movie ? It sounds just like her......

Pretty cool they put a song like this in the game even if it is only the credits, would love to see more music like this actually in-game. Is it just me or does it seem like ESO is going for a mature vibe with their game?

In Beowulf it was actually Buttercup singing :) As youuu wishhhh! ok ok, too obscure maybe. Robin Wright. :)

http://youtu.be/v6Sw0cOHa8s

Malukah is getting some deserved attention, she is also working with Jeremy Soule on his upcoming non-game related composition.

The Mage, the Warrior, the Thief, which are you?

Could be fun, but I didn't think the "shards" were static. Where did this news come from?

A crafting/traders community with ingame gold...

how do they plan tp fight goldsellers?

My prediction is in about three months the game goes free to play and you can buy gold from the cash shop...that's the easy fix tbh.

Selling gold in the "cash shop" is no solution at all, because the goldsellers simply undercut the "official" prices, so it hardly makes a dent in their profits. Goldsellers were unbearable in Neverwinter in the first months after launch, and that was a completely F2P game.

I expect there will be an extremely heavy attack on ESO by goldsellers at launch and during the first month. It's a high profile game, and there will be a very strong demand for gold. People need those expensive horses, they need to feed them every day to level them up, they need to speedlevel their PVP toons, they need to buy filled soul gems for PVP rezzing, they need to buy bulk crafting mats to speedlevel their crafters, etc., etc.

Account hacking is going to be rampant, so make sure you have a VERY strong password. Hack attempts will already have your account username (it's visible in game), so all they need is to match your password.

 I can't believe in today's world a new service doesn't have two-factor authentication and hidden/unknown account names.

(already provided repeated feedback to ZOS about this flap)

I think ESO has at least three things going for it, and with that it will still be a challenge.

First - paywall

Second - paywall

Third - Single server (regional)

There are a lot of F2P choices out there, paying for box and then submitting card for monthly is going to increase a spammers time and risk per account. A single server makes it rough for them to jump around once they have annoyed a chunk of population.

I suppose there are ways around all of this, but it might just be easier to go after other populated titles. Yet, as long as there is demand they will be in the game. :(

As a side thought I think the PW solution of diamonds as a unique AH currency wasn't so great either. I think a good solution as someone stated was live moderation, slap them spammers on the spot.

1. Open world Diablo 4 with seamless non loading screen instances just like promised by WoD recently.

Think the only response I have here is put it on your wish list for D4. :)

2. Extrema hard end game to progress through. Bring back Hell and Inferno difficulties, not "choose grandma" style easy levelling.

As others stated – I suspect you would not be saying this if you already went through game on T6. I myself struggle to frustration on T3 at this point. So it's T2 for me, and only in Act I thus far.

3. Bring back trade with a Gold only economy in which you can SELL stuff to advance in crafting, grinding mats.

Unfortunately, the auction house created expectations that cannot be undone. It was a test, it failed and they yanked it. Part of the challenge (random?) and fun (or not) of this type of game is looting the right item.

The AH broke that gameplay style into something that didn’t fit this particular type of game. Only thing a player cared about was Gold accumulation, so you could browse the AH for exactly what you are looking for.

4. Make all gear free to trade again BUT to avoid inflation ...once  you traded/bought it make it BOA so it leaves the economy.

What might be an interesting idea is that only player crafted gear is tradable. Everything dropped is BOA. Hmm.

5, The last bosses in Inferno should always be adapted to the gear you wear, so the scaling of challenge should be reviewed each fight.

This would be dual edged in my opinion. What if, before I clicked on door I took everything off? Will it measure what’s in my inventory?

Besides that, which might not be a great example. I think they chose a gated approach with the Torment feature. It’s pretty staple in Blizzard and other online games right now. I am not saying it’s the best way but it is functional, and more predicable to balance and anticipate player behavior.

 ...

I intend on a light armor Templar to start, but I am excited about other possibilities as Templar as well. Templar gets me close to feeling like a AD&D Cleric (not 4th ed.). Except for being a scourge to the undead. Maybe one of the skill lines will fill this in a bit.

My dungeon experience is still quite limited in ESO. One observation is that the team cannot simply rely on a "great" healer. Damage mitigation is in the hands of the rest of the team as well. Blocks, interrupts, and getting out of the way are all going to make a difference.

As another said, I suspect good tanks will be a rare compared to a good healer.

I have always liked and enjoyed Jeremy Soule’s compositions. Yet, I feel that Sony went with “best” versus the best for Everquest. I expect EQN will have some great themes and formats. And, while I acknowledge this.

Laura was inspired in EQII - you can feel it, there were places the music was experimental for an MMO game. Almost as though it was her first trip to fantasy, like a new adventure, the music told tales of mystery and wonder, excitement, and anxiety. Not to be told the same way again.

Jeremy visits a fantasy world and it’s old hat, even he may know it somewhere inside. Just as you can hear the personality of John Williams in Harry Potter, Jaws, Raiders, and Star Wars. Jeremy is almost too familiar to my ears. Part of the magic comes from the unknown.

A master composer can create beautiful music, but a masterpiece comes from inspiration in the hands of a master.

Okay I feel like an idiot now. I cleaned out the computer in anticipation of getting the new card and I removed quite a bit of dust and I reran the diagnostic just to be sure and the problem is gone. So I went and played SWTOR which was causing the display driver to fail and also ESO it froze but ESO the beta is over so unable to test that will test GW 2 later.

The game is fine now. So the display driver failing was caused purely by dust. I should have done this before I went and checked the new card thing. I hope it does not happen again.

:) Don't feel too bad, I learned the same thing quite awhile back. Think  it was Crysis 2, card was overheating, fan turning on really high. Thought my card was on it's way out. Opening cover I discovered not a dust bunny but a dust Werebunny!

Vacuumed it out and not only did Crysis run a hell of a lot better, cooler, quieter but all my other games did too. :)

Anyhow, I clean it out every couple months now.

Maybe you are simply sensitized to what interests you. Sort of like when you buy a Ford truck you start to notice many Ford trucks are around.

I've decided on a Breton Templar... or maybe Redguard... Bosmer, er um. Yikes! I'm gonna end up with alts. Also want a Khajit Dragonknight.

There will be a lot of Bosmer Archers, but a lot of everything else too. It is especially skewed during beta since each alliance only has 3 choices to begin with.

Geez so nobody commented on your post for 9 min and you needed to bump your on thread ?  Some mobs are static some move just like every other mmo out today.  I don't remember reading where they said the mobs would be hiding in a tree waiting for you to walk by and ambush you, then run across the world to a new spot.

This actually happened to me in Daggerfall, a blood cult baddie suddenly (poof of red/black smoke) appeared from behind a wagon and charged me. Haven't been able to tell if it was an active quest I was on or not. Surprised me though, being in town.

MOB pattern variation could always be better - though I think ESO is a decent mix. Considering the wolves for example, I have seen wandering wolves, wolves resting two in a pack with one laying down and the other "watching" surroundings. I have seen them over a corpse feeding. I know it is still just a path. Suppose my perspective and suspension of belief is that when I come upon a baddie my character is in that "moment". Meaning a bad guy was not necessarily leaning against that wall 10 minutes ago or yesterday.

I would have liked to see some kind of crazy elaborate fuzzy logic in ESO. Say an area of undead is based on a time-to-live and number of concentration if 5 undead exist in an area they do normal path things. If the amount of undead increases to 8-12 and nobody comes along to thin them out in X minutes they begin to merge together and then start seeking out PC populated areas.

I don't know when we will see a true fantasy world simulation - the kind I used to imagine when I thought about Faerun as an online place. A place where night time could truly be terrifying for a lone adventurer. You see bits and pieces of great ideas but never complete and in one game. We should have the technology to do some incredible stuff, so I don't know if it's a technical limitation or vision.

Would be fantastic if this goes in and works well.

Some of the most fun PvP experiences for me was as Swordmaster in Warhammer. Early times - especially T2-T3.

Quite nostalgic for keep defense from those days. You felt powerful, you felt beneficial, even critical to the objective. Certainly added a tangible, tactile layer of complexity to fights.

So everyone knows, i'm not WOW bashing, did enough of that after CAT, and well deserved bashing i must say. But I played WOW for 6 years and had lots of fun. The point of the post is not numbers, it's what do you think is killing it? Is it blizzard or other MMO's?

Peace,

Lascer

Age devours all. :)

You said yourself - played for six years, had lots of fun. Could you watch reruns of your favorite show for six years? Eat at your favorite fast food place over and over for that long. It is natural while people in general are stuck in and often prefer our routines, we need variety and a sense of "new".

Human nature is killing WoW, people interested have been there done that. It doesn't make WoW bad or in a position of failng to thrive. And I don't know if the saying "everything old is new again" applies to game expansions. Right now, I don't feel I can go back.

Under two weeks - maybe making two characters. I cant decide!

Norn Necromancer and Human or Sylvari Elementalist. Sylvari Necro? Norn Ele?

Oh but then the Thief, and oh man! The Guardian - totally an unexpected rockin interesting class, Ack! I don't know, I don't know. Cannot succumb to Alt-itus this time.

*goes off to blather at desk about no time, too many (good) choices, responsibilities... damn Anet, ok ok, I take it back*

I'm left-handed and use the mouse in my right hand. I don't understand why someone would think they need to do everything with their dominant hand. Hell, in an MMO so reliant on movement, you'll be doing far more with your left on the keyboard than your right on the mouse anyway.

I have to ask people who use mice in their left hands... Why? How did you learn to do it this way? I'm really trying to figure this out. I've always used it in my right hand because the mouse is positioned on the right of the keyboard. To me, it's the same reason I don't flip the keyboard upside-down so I can have the numpad on the left, then insist on "left-handed" keyboards that are already made this way.

I have to wonder if people are making a conscious effort to use their dominant hand for things instead of just using whatever hand happens to grab it first.

It wasn't learned - from the time I first sat down at a computer I naturally used left hand for mouse. Nothing to figure out.

I wasn't willfully saying "damn the masses I am doing it different because I am a minority!"

Fk with legit players to slow down the gold sellers...

 Brilliant.

Not sure how this screws me, I can't send or guild bank deposit more than I have earned. So what is the concern? Nothing else seems to impact regular gameplay that I can tell. Real question - not picking on you or anything.

I am all for disrupting the first 30 days of RMT spammers. I think this will help the economy settle more naturally, than it would otherwise.

By affecting this critical point in launch they are handicapping RMT, while the rest of us settle in and acquire wealth through in-game mechanisms.

Had to retrain myself to use WASD as a left handed (mouse) gamer, for years (pre-Daggerfall) I used arrow keys. Was a terrible Melee in AoC.

Tera was basically unplayable for me with arrow keys. I had to adapt.

Really just since TSW have I gotten it down. Still unintentionally press ~, F, R, E, or CAPS LO...ck when playing. :(

It was a challenge and I hated it, feeling awkward, which led to being frustrated, and soon after to /camp. Like any habit though, you can break it and change it. Just push through the hard times, your mind will get over it.

I feel pretty good in GW2 now.
