Being a game developer myself, and a gamer for 30 plus years I told my friends, family to stay clear from this game, I could tell  there was many red flags . One I was always check the history of companys and developers.   Another what they created so far. Which was not much.   I develop alot  more alone  than they did for a game I made.   I worked for big and small companies and now alone, I would never ever try to make a MMORPG....   You need a good team, and they need to be very experienced.  Even then I would make a smaller scale game first to see how well you work together. Because not every one can work together.   Then make money from it, and use some of it to help fund your game.

I believe these guys did not scam at first, I believe they were way over there head. Which even happen to Curt Schilling..  I think once they realized that, they tried to get them selves out and only got worse. The lead on the team, I believe was Jason which was a gamer, that was a bad sign... The Lead Programmer was someone who never made a game before, or completed one or was successful. Which is another sign..One more sign was they switched Engines from Unity, to Hero , back  to Unity.. For a MMO they could of stayed with Hero, but I bet they lack the experienced and realized no tuts for Hero.... They figured the asset store and community, tuts could save them..  For an MMO that won't happen... You need the right team, experience to do so...

You need a few smaller scale games, some multiplayer games under your belt and maybe some larger scale games, then move on to a MMO and by then have a company built around those games..First!!

I see to many  people try to make a MMO and fail and peopel try and make MMO's and before they  even start fail as the team realizes how much work is involved, making smaller games even can take alot...

ALot of smart experienced devs are moving to Phone /Tablet games now because you can make decent money with single man teams or small teams.. They should have did this, but were not very smart....

Since 1999, I have played almost all of the AAA MMORPG titles and  for one reason or another they always ended up not being fun to the point where I just never played them again.

All this despite having various levels of characters including max level characters.

Well, in desperation for the past few weeks, after having played and enjoyed Single Player RPGs such as Pillars of Eternity, all the Dungeons and Dragons RPGs like BG, BGII, also Divinity original Sin, for the past few months, I was determined to find a MMORPG and find out why I dont enjoy MMORPGs the same way and moreover find a way to enjoy MMORPGs.

Here is what I learned and what I found to be my key to enjoying an MMORPG:

1) Set a goal - In my case I wanted a Fantasy MMO, it did not matter if there was a sub or not, as long as it was Fantasy and not Asian/Eastern/Anime styled. Also, it had to have a GREAT story and be immersive.

2) Select a MMORPG - I ended up selecting Lord of the Rings reasons were that I always liked the Story and I am a Tolkien/Middle Earth/Lord of the Rings fan.

3) Disable General chat and trade Chat - Since the biggest killer for immersion in a MMO for me is the chat channels, I removed both general and trade chat. Now nothing would distract me.

4) No Guild to Start - Although I love guilds, i did not want anyone or anything except to play by myself for awhile and just enjoy the story, the world, etc....later if I would consider a guild again.

5) Ignore the Rat Race - In the past, it seemed that the objectives for so many players was to level up as fast as they could to get to the good stuff. Then, when they got to max level, and had noting to do as a result of leveling so fast they woudl jsut whine on the forums and chat. No...not this time, I avoided the forums and as I mentioned previously, I disabled general chat.

6) No Raids- At least not yet...the last thing I needed at this point was the frustration of Raid planning, the time sink and then the frustration of seeing a raid dissolve before it should....maybe later on.

7) Take my time - This time around my priority was going to be the story, the world and my character and taking the time to smell the roses.

The result:

Without the anxiety of all the things that annoyed me in MMORPGs, I am now enjoying myself for the first time in years if ever, in a MMORPG.

Moreover, I was able to do this with my level 49 Warden..a class I have hated and felt stuck with, as everytime I tried a new class, the dread of having to start over from level 1 just made it a pain for me.

Thus, with some help from LOTRO who has made the Warden class more tolerable in regards to gambits, which i always hated, now had group them into pairs, making the management, execution and memorization fo Gambits much more easier and fun.

Now, I had looked at other MMORPGs I had played previously and that fit my criteria, such as WoW, Neverwinter, EQ2...but all three just could not interest me this time around, as the last thing I wanted was to return to the boredom of "WoD", and the grind of EQ2. Neverwinter was a game I always enjoyed, but upon logging in and playing my level 60, I just could not get into it.

Anyway, this is the formula that helped me return to MMOs, its is not for everyone, but for those who were in similar situations as I was with the same hang ups, I hope it helps you.

SAD because 16 plus years back I played  Asheron call 1 and did not have any issues, I had fun for 7 through 8 years.. So you also said AAA, why not play indies? I have an had more fun with them as well. So maybe you were looking at the wrong games?

ALso I dont get people who want to play a M M O ....... alone, that is so confusing to me, why bother..

Another Darkfall / Mortal Online.

They are online and making money as an indie dev, I still would be happy since they make money.. Because if they didn't they would be shut down as they would run out of cash , so because they aren't makiing millions people make silly comments? and you wonder why you see less MMO's being made.. Most devs have had enough ... So they are turning to mobile less hassle and more money to be made..

Im 36 and ive worked in IT, programming, you name it. I waited 3hrs for it to "kick in". People like you are the reason words like fanboy are a thing.

I'm 40 and have not played this game in years but when I did and tried recently there was times it was fine, and others were I had issues fanboy has nothing to do with it, if your 36 maybe grow up and understand that some people may not have issues and calling them a fanboy makes you look immature.

i know nothing about this game, is it ffa full looting? if so, yeah it wont do well and thats not really going out on a limb either.

those kind of games rarely do well, i can only think of one that has been released in the last 10 or 12 years that has.

Really thats why Asheron call 1  had PVE servers and PVP  and the PVP with full loot did the best since 1998.. I'm confused... I for one love full loot, not because I like ganking,  but I like helping people who get ganked and the challenge .  You actually think before you go out and hunt rather than just dieing, and nothing really happens like Rift, WOW etc..

They have no clue... That's the funny part.. They are blaming the wrong people, so at there job, should we blame them instead of there boss's ? or owner... when they have little to no say.. I love how they call KS begging... That tells me they have no idea what it cost to make a MMO and that's why a lot of companies are bailing out on making them, they aren't worth making...

This is why IOS and Android are doing so well, Funcom, Sony all went that route more money , less complaining. less money and way less people to hire... A lot of solo and tiny teams only needed.. hardly any hassle, I used to love working on MMO's but I cant stand it.. I prefer console, and Phones, Tablets now..

As a long time MMO player, I've seen developers come and go. The current market is nothing more than a Smash and Grab Robbery. They come out with a new game, give it a founders pack with early access to get you hooked then make a shit game.
The worst is when you have a sub game that has long subscription options 6-12 months or more, then the game goes free to play.

Now its even worse with the new crime.. Crowd funding. What a joke. Hey give me your money and in a few years when we go live you can play it. Sad part is, there are 1000's of people willing to pay for the chance of taking part in a game they have very limited knowledge of.

In the current market its been proven that you don't have to make a good game to get paid. There are numerous examples out there.

What happened to Developers who are in it to make a solid game along with making money.

I would say that the current developer landscape is proof positive that there is accountability for GDs.

No more big money is flowing in to produce MMOs, and they have had to resort to begging.

Massive shift to F2P models after the community shunned the concept of a sub.  Not because subs are bad, but because THEY AREN'T PRODUCING GAMES WORTH A MONTHLY FEE.

Pure market accountability at work.

ROFL begging?? Nah gamers beg they want it all for free... Look at Gloria victus they did it with there own money, I would charge 60 bucks for the game if I were them, that's the going rate for games today..

When there are no MMO's you will see why, look in the mirror..

Of course there is. Trion Worlds is accountable to me and It's highly unlikely they'll see more of my money again.  Every gamer a dev fucks over is  a customer they'll not have again. There isn't an endless supply of people willing to play these games and developers who go for a quick buck with a cash grab will only harm themselves in the end.

the publishers above  the devs please do ypur research devs have little to no say for companies like Trion, and Blizzard, that's why a lot of us are doing Indie but gamers will always complain regardless.,... I said MMo;s would die 5 years ago, and I was right and part of it is the gamers, and communitys, they want everything for free, and a many different ways... no respect, I see totally why the industry is messed up...

Lol, developers fault, really, we have bosses, and people above us... Love when gamers blame the devs when we have little to no say.. funny stuff.

I'm a gamer who went dev now I see the devs side and why they wont work for MMO's as much anymore, its always our fault.. Please make your own game so I can complain...

Maybe you're just old

Old has nothing to do with it, today MMO's have rude people playing, and the games are to easy, kids today like everything done for them... Not all but a lot do..

So making comments like that get on people nerve .. If it wasn't for us older gamers and developers most devs are older myself include, you kids would not have games either..

Nothing bad about it, only 19.99 on Steam. Some hate it, some love, just be aware it's alpha. Game is great for what it is..

Incomplete games are not much fun.

Incomplete MMOs are bad.

Very incomplete MMOs are worse.

Very incomplete MMOs that want money, are a no go.

No one should pay money for this title at this time.

Post like this makes no sense at all ... PLease give valid information, this sounds like trolling to me.. nothing more.

How do you sell a barely complete game and $100,000 debt to kickstarter?  Who would buy such a thing?

Update: According to Jasons post on the GM forum, Interdiction did not BUY the game, they are taking over development which I would imagine is for a big percentage of the profits.  It is also based on what Jason says they have ready at this moment which could be very different than what James delivers.

Debt? What debt?

Donations to a kickstarter campaign are not repayable in any real sense.  If the funds are spent on the development of the game they are a bonus to the buyer not a debt.

Game was not sold, some developers have the passion to help finish such a game being a dev myself for game development I can see someone taking this on. I personally would not due to James, I personally have seen him run his month on Unity site all the time... I know people who worked with him, they actually asked me, but I do this professionally  I don't work for free...

Plus I knew this game would fail any company who changes engines more than once is a sign that the dev team is lost..  For a new company trying to make a name for them selves bad idea to take a game like this who knows the mess they would get into to.. I bet they would have a ton of work to do and the work I bet is a mess... I have worked on MMO's AAA and indies , not bashing  indies I support them but I followed this game, and said day 1, they would fail, due to how it was run..

You need a good project lead and a team that works well, skill can be taught, but people who have bad attitudes will be reflected on the game they are making, I seen games fail and some do well. The main reason indies fail, is because lack  of funds, bad leadership, and a lazy team... That may not listen well..

They have more important things to worry about than combat right now in my opinion...  I still wish they would of released the game or atleast no wipes, some people don't want to spend a year testing just to have a wipe, I know that's beta, but people get bored from MMO's today.. So I did some testing  and now I will wait for the wipe..

But from what I seen the UI is not very good, needs a ton of work they need to hire someone who has a clue about the UI, that thing is annoying.  and way dated..,

I'm a gamer who went dev, but after what I have seen from a lot of communitys, people tend to be more selfish than 10 years ago, so a lot of people are moving on. Devs can make better games and make more money with less hassle with console for IOS, Android, so there are a few reasons why..

Also saying a game fails because people don't like it, yet it makes millions, I would love to make millions and people say my game failed.. I would laugh all the way to the bank.. TODAY gamers, people are  to different everyone wants what they want, and they lose interest fast.... That's the issue, I ran a guild for 16 years and retired as I notice the amount of whining more so in the last few years, people whine about everything and anything and are never happy, this ruins it for everyone else to..

So again, I been saying it for years, MMO's are dying, I worked for some, and I would never again. its not worth the hassle, this is coming from a gamer who went dev sad to say to...

are you guys ever happy???

Yup this is why devs wont make many MMO's anymore either. I would never work on a MMO ever again.. not worth it, Android and  IOS development way less hassle.. Never can please people no matter what you do with MMO's and they are  pain to deal with more money and you can make what you want.

Unreal and Unity are making it more possible for devs not to lose a ton of money due to the changes thankfully, since before it made it near impossible for indies to make a game with out publsihers and KS.. So glad we don't have to deal with this.

Now indies can charge 60  bucks and gamers cant cry about it..

Wonder if this is a result of increased Unity usage from indie developers.

Almost certainly.

Nothing lowers prices quite as fast as competition.

Unity has a long way to go before it even comes close to what Unreal offers.  Unity is more of a Lite version of an engine.  It has it's limits.  You won't see any AAA games being made with Unity.

Ya if you use the free version Unity Pro is  up there I do this professional and can get AAA looks from it, Unity 5 even better so not sure were you think Unity is not as good, when it is. Also for an indie the asset  store is great.... The community is also ten times better with Unity.. I use Unreal 3 and 4, Hero , Unity Pro 4 and 5.   I also have used Cry Engine among many others.

So I hate when people try and say Unity is not as good, when that is wrong , now out of the box some things graphic wise is better, but with Assets like Shader Forge, Skyshop its amazing. RTP, Terrain Composer will smoke Unreal terrain tools. or any of these engines.. So again the asset store is great and I love that I can make assets as well to get income for my games since I free lance professionally for AAA and Indies.

But Unity Free you don't have light maps soft shadows LOD support unless you have Pro..So I would agree with you besides the asset store. Unreal store sucks right now.

I think Unity will change some pricing because of this. I bet soon. They will have no choice.

Blizzard? SOE? Trion? etc?    They are all tainted. They were all once glorious and hungry prize fighters. However, once they had their moment of glory, they became soft and civilized.

I find this thread funny that hardly anyone said indies when indies make the best game and do not try to clone WOW or any other game, then make bad games. They need more money and most would do a better job. They already have shown they can, they could do better with more money . This is why KS and others ways of crowd funding are good. The issue though is KS lets in to many companies that do not have much done.  They try and scam , so KS should not allow them to use it unless they have a playable game to show people and actually play some of  it in my opinion. I think a lot jump the gun an go to KS before they made anything and they fail. Which is horrible... Being a gamer for many years that turned dev, I see this

Indies should never ever make a MMO as there first game , even if they made them before, because you need to build company and learn team building. I been doing this for my own company for a year, we are starting out with Androids I have worked for AAA and indies. I have worked for good and bad companies. I prefer my own as I love games and hate what I have seen from many companies. I could go on and on.

But with indie companies they are mostly true gamers that care about the game all AAA companies care about money. Not saying all do this but a lot do. Now money is important of course to stay in business as well, so keep in mind that should be on your list,

Top should be the game, then team building, then money.

Now greedy companies will go Money, money, and Money, then maybe the game.
