If they do PVP I hope they keep it like they did with EqLive, I really hate free for all PVP.  I dont want to spend my hard earned money on a game to get pillaged by some kid thats able to sit there every afternoon and night after school while im at work.

No company worth their salt is up to any of those things.  Companies have to be able to pay their employee's and if that means pushing a game out there that's not "finished" then they'll do it.  Especially since they can patch the game and the patching is *free* as long as you have an account of course.  I think alot of people forget that there are people who have families and bills to pay involved with the making of these games.  I've met some of the people behind the games and despite all the jaded evil comments from "fanboi's" they're some of the nicest people out there. AND they play these games too! So its not like they don't know or understand the frustration of something not working.   Especially if its something they were completely sleepless over for months trying to get it out and work correctly.

Im not saying everyone should be nice, because thats just a fantasy world that everyone is kind.  But these games are someone's blood, sweat, and tears.  Its basically slapping a hard working artist across the face and telling them their master piece is worthless.

Isn't there anyway to get this site to work with atleast Minium security on cookies! It kinda sucks to have all sorts of things set up to protect my computer when surfing the net and then have to turn half of them off for like one site.

I mean don't get me wrong I don't hate cookies, infact I keep several on my machine, but the fact I have to leave the browser open to all cookies, sort of sucks?

Ive been a subscriber to EQ for like 3 years and I was a legends subscriber for like a half a year and I didn't even get into beta.  So they didn't give too much preference to current players!!  I think alot of it came down to luck of the draw for everyone.

Everytime I Hear something new about Eq2 I get more and more Excited about the release of the game.  The developers from SOE, atleast for the Everquest 1 & 2 teams have always made it a point to listen to constructive critism.  I suppose thats why Eq1 has been around and as strong in customer base as it has for the past several years.  Its just good to finally finally see some changes to the classes, I was getting kind of worried that if I played a Ranger, I was going to be more Thief than woodsman!

I dont care were the original idea "may" have come from, its still a different system in the long run.

I've not been programming as long as you Worf, but I went to school for Game Design and Development.

For programmers just coming into the world of programming like our original poster. C++ is his best choice for Game Programming.  It is the industry starting standard.  Assembly optimizations are handled by programmers they hire for just that, optimization of the game or by programmers that have like yourself been programming for a long time and understand all the low level concepts and high level concepts needed to mix the two.

Its also good to learn scripting languages to work with your C++ code, its what makes all your pretty graphics coding even better.

The openGL and DirectX api programming should come in if you know anything about 3D Math, i mean you can do some basic stuff with it without the math, but if you want something other than squares, grids and such on screen you have to know that Matrix math!

But if you know assembly you can definitly program for a console machine.  Most of them do have their own languages for programming, but they are assembly based.

All in all I do agree, mixing assembly in after you Write the code in C++ to get it working is a fantastic way to gain speed if you need too.

Um very FEW games are ever programmed in VB, infact I've never seen a company ask for a game programmer that knows VB, unless they're programming for some sort of hand held device.

I think Open PvP has a place in some games and only a very select few.  Shadowbane is one, I've never played the game myself, but the fact the world is built and run by players calls for PvP, which is why I do not play that game.  I quit Ultima Online Several times before they got rid of open PvP, simply because HOW could I level! Everytime I set foot outside of the guard area I was being PvP'd!  People say well stop whining and grow tough skin, well you dont grow tough skin from stuff like that, you Quit playing the game because your frustrated.

You can't just grow tough skin to get over the fact You're never going to level or get better because you can't do anything in a game.   I think that if some 12 year old that is home schooled can sit online all day and level up and then spend his time making other people made for a laugh, then why bother playing with them?   So to avoid the conflict of such games I played more PvE games such as EverQuest, it built servers to deal with the people who wanted to do nothing but PvP, added duels and arenas, and guild wars for the PvE servers.  Now that I can agree with thats what I personaly like.

I know there are good "pvp" players that take on others of opposite guilds, factions, or races only, to support the ongoing storylines, but alot of pvp players are kids that grew up with FPS games and so anything that kills another player is what they want.    So PvP has its place for the juvenile and the adult alike, I Just avoid them as much as possible!

the timing on the release date is implied.  By the only taking Beta Sign ups to get an idea of how many servers they need and yadda yadda.  But a friend of mine has the more accurate information on that i'll have to grab the links from him and post them.

As for the casual gamer comments about the tard treatment.  From what I understand from reading stuff from SOE the area where the quests are for "tards" and they hold your hand..are the NEWBIE / Tutorial quests so its only natural they tell you basically everything anyway. Isn't it??  WoW has quests like that as well so its not just EQ2.  Personaly anything that keeps me from spending 3 real time days to find a mob for a newbie quest is welcomed.  I dont mind spending several days on a quest thats worth something.

AHHHH!! God I wish alot of you would get your facts straight!  You try and compare it to the issues with SWG well SOE had NO real control over what went on with SWG.  They even said it publically themselves that EVERYTHING they do comes from or goes through LucasArts.  Especially all the issues with the game now like the new expansion that is coming out its basically LucasArts going DO THIS and do it this way and  OH use our Dev Team while your at it.  SOE is basicaly a place holder for all the blame to go onto because no one seems to pay any real attention to who's in charge.

Then there are the well what about the launch problems with the first Everquest.  SOE didn't even OWN Variant when Everquest first launch so again NOT their fault.  Everquest 2 and a few other smaller games like Planetside are the only games they Put together themselves!!

As for what ever issues that EQ2 is having now, like not enough quests or content, ever think about they aren't putting every piece of content into the game.  Its a Beta, its basically a "preview" of the game to get people into the game and find bugs they couldn't find themselves.  Of course its going to be missing or having bugs and just because the NDA is lifted does not mean the game is going gold.  Its a hype builder, because now everyone can talk about the game in public and give people some idea of what the buzz is really about instead of rumour.

Im taking what alot of beta testers have to say with a grain of salt mostly from the pure fact alot of them are hard core gamers who are severly jaded and opinionated or people who have NO idea what to really do in a beta test.  You're there to play the game sure, but you're really there to find those pathing bugs, broken quests, lagged zones via server side and the likes and report it with helpful descriptions of the problem and maybe even some helpful ideas on how youd like to see it work.  Thats what Beta testing is for, not whining and moaning, which soooo many people do all the time.

From the estimation I've seen on alot of sites that get word from SOE there's atleast 2 more months of testing and development to go.  And the fact Wow Pushed their released date till next year, Im thinking hmm SOE must be waiting till guess what Next year!  So keep enjoying the beta, find the bugs, make suggestions that are worth while and meaningful to try and help the game. I know you folks are far more educated then you act sometimes!!

If Everquest 2 does come out before the New Year well....Hell NO MMO has ever been released complete, Im still going to give it a shot just like I did Horizons, and Ultima Online *several times* and even WoW. The only game I ever beta tested I didn't buy was SWG, mostly because I found it seriously tedious so it annoyed me.   Now if I could just in some sick reality get into the Everquest 2 beta..lol.  *done ranting now, goes to find a soda*

I think Most people who aren't shut ins play characters that fit a storyline they've created, or something they feel would be a great character to play.  Thinking of it in terms of a sexual way, is probably a more immature person's thought.   Although it is often nice to play females that have a nicer ass than me.  *thinks those commercials for better butt exercises are such a scam!*

Jokester,

Unless you have something constructive to say perhaps you shouldn't post on the Development boards.  Most of the people here are wanting to help improve games through their own time and talent with development and/or design.  A good MMORPG's design period can go on for atleast 2 to 4 years realistically if they are not under the strangle of some large corporate execs it can go on for atleast for even longer.   Just *pre development* can take longer than that.  Because yes in the corporate world you have to write insanely large documents on everything, back stories, game mechanics, sound mechanics, everything.  Designing a game IS a long process.  I only got 3 months to design, document and develop a game for the final project of my class before graduation.  Our design document alone was close to a thousand pages.

If you want to know what he means by summons you might want to read the entire set of posts, he's been talking back and forth with others about his design for a game.

anyway Best of luck Rage with your game, I look forward to reading more about your design ideas!

*chuckles* Hey! Im getting nervous with 52 mins to go!  Even if I dont' win the whole moment up to finding out is enough to drive a person crazy.  Yes the chances are slim with only 15 invites going out to North America, but hell! Its not like im losing or spending anything to try and win right? *crosses fingers and toes though anyway*

Any of its old members out there? If you're going to Eq2  ol Kindart will have a *relative* traveling through there and has considered trying to rebuild what we all loved at one time.

So if any of the old members or even our guild founders are out there let me know!!

Considering the storyline has all the races living in the same two cities, i dont think racial based mounts would really work with the storyline.  But then again maybe it could. I dont think it comes down to imagination, there is no imagination really involved in making up a mount that looks cool with a certain race, it comes down to usefulness and reason.   There's really no difference between the mounts in WoW if my memory serves, they do the same things so why bother with different types that all do the same thing.   Now in Ultima they had all sorts of mounts but they were all completely different, some held things, some could fight good, some were magical.  Now if they did that with racial mounts, that'd be cool.

Personally I'd love to have my wood elf train some sort of magical plant and ride on that.  Only because it'd be funny as hell!
