Yep I was online 85 and dial up sucked first official mmoprg was made in the 70's using MUD as a backbone. And even then it had typically the same business model. Launch what you have floppy upgrade rinse and repeat. Neverwinternights got the first official labeling in 1990 shipped with AOL as a global mmorpg. Depends on who you ask because ultima and graal was around beta form then. But thats besides this point the genre has been the same for YEARS. And its a total failure at knowing your history of what your playing. To even act shocked time and time again and troll up a million forums in uproar. But then again it's the nature of gamers this generation to bitch about stuff they dont even know 5% about anyway. The one fault Mr.Smart made is the fact he talks too much. Just fix the game try and salvage sales and do your thing. He is paying way too much attention to the whining. He should pay attention to blizzard wrath mistake. That cost then millions easy in lost customers. Which doesnt really matter when you are so far in the black your bottomline is in another galaxy.

Look at the end of the day dont carry on freaking out people. I start saying wtf when a game has several patches and months under its belt. And still is worthless glitchy and has no focus. Look at conan took them a year and change to get it right. Took wow a million version patches and a BC expansion to get it right. Just to fudge it up all again the next one....You go down the line of all these games they all sure the same roots. They sucked total butthole at launch some didnt work at all or even stayed up for a hour. This game will do the samething get better or die. Regardless of DS's comments.

Amen.

ps: Thanks for showing our age, because, dayum(!) those were the good old days. Kids today have it easy  :)

This Picture of Derek is HILARIOUS.   Looks like he just killed a handle of Jack after a long day of forum trolling and bashing the original developers.

lol. That photo was taken back  in 2003 at the E3 expo. it was Bard Wardell (Stardock), myself and a bunch of others at that bar meet.

I like looking young, though I have sprouted lots of Grey hairs since then. :(

Nice little fluff article. Combine this with the fact that all of the forum threads that Derek Smart said anything combative in have been deleted, and one wonders how unbiased this was.

Okay let’s cut through the fluff and ask the question that everyone is thinking.
Was this interview paid for? Did DS or QoL pay for all of the coverage they are getting lately, because quite honestly that seems to be the only way a company of this little consequence can get press time.

Thats easy.

We're not paying for anything. Period. Simple. End of story.

Heck, our marketing compaign, short of ad banners here and there hasn't even got off the ground yet.

The fact of the matter is that my involvement, coupled with the fact that I have an industry history of getting things done, are what have propelled Alganon forward. The Allen controversy is just noise and bears no relevance to anything because for as long as the game was in development, prior to my involvement, it got no traction whatsoever. Launching the game incomplete hasn't helped either.

My style is simple: I engage the community who play the games I am involved with and I tend to lay it all out like it is. Some find it refreshing, others (who don't have a clue what to think) just want to make noise about me because, well, they can.

The fact of the matter is my involvement at QOL goes as far back as November, but nobody knew anything about it because I chose to keep it that way. I was in an advisory role then. Once I became president and took the reins, it allowed me the freedom to take control and steer things forward.

People are talking about the game. The community is growing (we get new players every day now) , the team is focused and we are moving forward. All of that happens simply because I play by a different rule book, and that rule book is what has me where I am almost twenty years and fourteen games later. Most of you can't even play my games, so yeah, I realize that this is a different beast entirely and so I take it as it comes.

As I've said before, I have a goal, a plan and a flag. Everything else is just noise.

Interesting... All of the ones I remember in the Alganon forums here are still very much intact.  If you mean the official Alganon forums, I'd not know as I've not been back there for awhile.  But it would hardly surprise me if those had vanished.  Those are the posts that orginally drove much of the once fine community to leave, and thus inflicted major damage on one of the more valuable assets that QoL had.

http://www.mmorpg.com/profile.cfm/username/dsmart

Just to prove I'm not going all conspiracy theory here, if you follow the link to his profile, supposedly he has posted 18 times.  Of those 18 posts, only the 3 PR appropriate ones are left.  Man, I spend way too much time on these forums . . .

Pay attention:

The reason is simple, most of the deleted threads contain TOS violations by you and others like you who spend time bashing other people (e.g. me) instead of, you know, TALKING ABOUT GAMES. So when threads get deleted, any and all posts within said threads - including YOUR consistently derogatory and hostile posts - get deleted.

I have Google Alerts for the game, and so in order to answer questions from people who are genuinely interested inTHE GAME, I tend to login and answer them. More often than not, things end up going sideways - and usually long before I even get involved.

If you have no interest in a game, just don't talk about it.  Better yet, stop taking a hostile stance or putting people down just because the very premise of anonymity gives you newfound freedown to behave badly online.

And thats why posts and threads are deleted (at least on forums where they value the community and thus tend to adhere to the TOS they put up).

One thing I will say is server performance and the hitching and compat delay has inmproved 100% that was my biggest gripe when I bnought the game it was so horrible lag/combat delay wise it was unplayable.

The guys are still working on making even more improvements to the networking layer in the short term. In the long term (i.e. post-April) we're going to rip it all out and redo it from scratch.

We're just taking baby steps atm.

Most games - especially MMOs - have early teething problems. Some never recover, others do. But no matter the game, if you released it incomplete, with missing features, a ton of bugs etc then the end result and subsequent reception will be nothing less thant what you guys experienced back in Dec.

We'll get Alganon finished and hopefully it will find its niche audience that will keep it going.

All the new features and improvements were posted online last week. It also includes a few items which were also released as previous patches and/or hot fixes.

My first order of business when I officially took the reigns (company and dev team)  in Feb, was to immediately put a halt to everything that didn't need to be in the game, wasn't totally finished etc.

The goals I set for the team involved very basic rules that I use for my own teams and games.

1. If it's not already in the game by *this* date, then it's not going in and needs to go on the backburner. For Alganon, that date was the date of my first "dev meeting" on Feb 23rd. There was a ton of stuff either not in, work in progress etc.

2. Finish all the important WIP items which included the instances, Tribute system and a host of other features - all of which were either buggy, not finished or in a state of flux though they were *supposed* to be ready by Mar 1st. They weren't.

3. Prioritize all the bugs and issues - anything that critically affected the game, got tackled first and foremost. Regardless of how many "kewl" things still needed to be done, bugs and tweaks were top priority.

My (3000AD team) then ran an analysis of most important gripes on the Alganon forum. They gave that to me. I then prioritized those, passed it to the team on "as needed" basis, and with  priority levels (e.g. fix this now please or why is this still not fixed?) to match.

The result of my plan is responsible for the awesomeness that was the major March patch released about four weeks ago and which - for all intent and purposes - was a game changer (as evidenced by the posts on our forums) and the general reception.

With the March patch out of the way, and a few hot fixes released shortly after, I tasked the team with going back to the list and finishing it up for the official launch in late April.

As I type this, the instances, Tribute system (incl. the items, pricing etc) are all being worked on.

And NO, contrary to what you read elsewhere by that other guy, this stuff was NOT finished by ANY stretch of the imagination. If it was, it would have been officially released by now. Again, I have access to the team and they know it, I know it, we all know it. No argument there whatsoever.

If you're a contractor building a house, then you get fired from the job because you screwed something up (e.g. the roof), you don't get to go out and say you left the owners with a great house, but oh, the roof leaks, the plumbing doesn't work, the AC is not installed, the electricty is not hooked up, the bathrooms aren't finished, the fence is lopsided, the sprinklers don't work etc. No, you don't get to do that.

So that list of stuff done, ready and going into the April launch all came about as a result of my stepping in and getting some direction and clearly defined goals.

My primary goal and objective remains the same:

1. Finish the game and release it COMPLETE.

Post ship :

1. Continue to find areas which can be improved upon, tweaked etc - especially with a view to giving the game its own unique identity.

2. Continue with bug fixes and tweaks on an "as needed" basis.

3. Create additional content to keep the peaked players engaged and with something to do. This is critical due the game being purely PvE.

4. Go back and see about implementing (or completing what was already started and put on hold) the most critical features (e.g. PvP, Consignment Shop etc) which are detrimental to the game. Also look to improving the game's world content (e.g. new character models & animations are top of my list) etc.

I have a long term goal for Alganon which is directly related to what the owners (the investors) of the company want to do with it in the long run. Like every MMO trying to gain its footing and find its niche, there is no quick fix.

I have funded, developed and shipped many *highly complex* games, so this is a walk in the park in comparison. I don't have any MMO experience and I don't need it because a) I'm not involved with, nor writing any Alganon game code b) you don't need to write code to run a company or manage a team. Only someone who has no idea what they're talking about, will assume otherwise. If you have development experience - especially in RUNNING a company and teams - the rest is just pure procedure.

Plus, an MMO is just another game type; there is nothing special about running an MMO team.

As things stand, I am doing my best to align the team, keep them focused, keep moral as high as possible (a major feat when your company and its sole asset - which are directly tied to your paycheck - are going through challenging times) , while keeping the company afloat.

Alganon, for all intent and purposes - prior to my involvement - was in poor (thats just putting it mildly) shape. And thats why it was neither finished nor in any decent shape when it was "released" in Dec. Period. End of story. Playing any version from Dec to March (before the last patch) is 100% evidence of that.

And while it is easy to point the finger at the team (the team is just fine - and thats why I did everything I could to save their jobs and just purge those who were detrimental to them), nobody should do that. Any mainstream developer with my experience knows that a team is just as good as the person leading them. Thats why there are so many company and product failures even though most had stellar teams in place. Unless you're focused, studious, committed, have the experience and know wtf you're doing, whatever you do will invariably lead to failure. And in the case of my predecessor, well, look at his record. Then look at mine. Draw your own conclusions.

I DO NOT know what will happen to Alganon in the long run and I wasn't brought in to speculate, make promises I can't keep or create lofty and largely unachievable goals. I was told to go in and lead the team to get Alganon FINISHED so that, at the very least, the investors could have closure of sorts without them having to fold the company and write off their investment due an unfinished product that was unmarketable.

What I DO know is that I'm going to lead the team to do EXACTLY what I was tasked with. Get Alganon FINISHED.

I know you guys are all anxiously waiting for either myself or QOL to respond in an official capacity. Unlike David, we are actually running our response through legal counsel before we release it.

David is yelling about defamation, yet he does the following:

1. Makes official public statements like this:

In an effort to enhance Alganon’s® market visibility and following the direction of certain investors, QOL hired Derek Smart as a consultant on December 3, 2009 to assist in the area of sales and marketing.  Soon thereafter, and for reasons unbeknownst to me, Mr. Smart began a smear campaign attacking my credibility, first privately among the investors, and then publicly.

Statements which are not only false, but also relies on the very investors he cheated and lied to. The same investors who unanimously kicked him out of the company. The same investors who are currently engaged in burying him in more lawsuits than he could possibly imagine.

2. Goes and issues a press release to "tell his skewed side"

The facts are clear and without interpretation. His complaint (there is no lawsuit btw, thats just rubbish) is without merit and is just designed to strong arm people to do what they have been doing these past four years: give him money.

He can make as much noise as he wants but that won't change the facts. I, for one, can't wait for him to sue because once he does that, everything goes into discovery and the world will eventually see him for the person that he is, the actions he has taken and how - once again - he brought a company to the brink and nearly destroyed it. Only this time the investors had me in place and so the damage was somewhat contained.

This is the guy who goes and "withdraws" whatever little money was left in the company, then gave it to attorneys (first one in Seattle, we just laughed at and sent him packing, then he got another in AZ - we're still laughing)  in a bid to sue the very company and investors whose money it was. Money that was for payroll and company expenses.

Right now he should be more concerned about the FBI, the IRS and the SEC more than filing frivolous suits that he has NO money to see through. Whatever money he had left, has already been spent on attorney retainers. Lets see how exactly he plans on bringing about frivolous lawsuits to no less than fourteen individuals and two companies. Not to mention the counter suits and cross complaints that are in the works and which he is most likely going to be buried in for the next ten years of his life.

We've known about his complaint since it was filed back on Mar 25th. But he chose to issue a press release on April 7th? My guess is that he's out looking for a job or some fool to give him money.

In typical David fashion, he has no clue wtf he is doing or what's coming down the line. All this is just noise to take away from the fact that he screwed several investors, screwed thousans of gamers, nearly destroyed the company and left a frigging mess behind. A mess that I have been tasked with clearing up and fixing.

If him or his attorneys have any sense whatsoever, they would closely examine the FACTS surrounding libel and defamation. To think that for as long as I've been on the Net that I would make statements which would even be construed as such, is not only hilarious but is the kind of thing that helps attorneys renovate their homes, buy a yatcht or send their spouses on a shopping spree. Only the attorneys win.

For those of you who really want to learn something, here are just two of thousands of legal briefs on defamation.

What are libel & slander?

The EFF on defamation

Apart from that, the same way that he tends to lie, we feel that he has not been forthcoming with his attorneys either because there is no way in hell they would even think of filing a complaint, let alone saber rattle if they had all the facts. But he wont' be the first one to lie to attorneys and then engage in damage control when a lawsuit hits.

Legal complaints are usually filed in order to extort money from their target. Thats why the courts place a time limit on them and during which you either piss or get off the pot. This complaint is no different as he has been trying to use it to leverage an exhorbitant buyout that he is in no way, shape or form is entitled to. Now whatever money he would have received is going to go to attorneys.

David - once again - severely underestimates the investors. Because he pretty much spent four years feeding them bullshit and them giving him money, he thinks that they're just going to cave and pay him to go away. When no less than ten people unanimously vote you OUT of a company - TWICE - it means only one thing: they want you GONE.

There is a reason why, since the complaint was filed, nobody from our side has said anything about it publicly. The reason is simple: it is rubbish and without merit.

When David Allen decided to bring me to QOL to HELP him, then LIE to me and try to get me to play along with his scheme to continue bilking the investors through lies and deceit he drew the line. Had I gone along with that plan, it would a different story today.  The court documents will show EXACTLY what happened. So go ahead David, bring it.
