Yes, we have two different MMO games in the works.

LOD is not the same scope (or features) as the much larger all encompassing game. It is a vastly smaller game, both in scale and scope. http://lodmmo.com

GCO is a behemoth. Thats putting it mildly. Basically it is an MMO game based on the Battlecruiser/Universal Combat type IP, complete with complexity and major niche. Unless you're really truly hardcore, you need not bother. It's like Eve. On steroids. With actual fps and planetary access. Without the spreadsheets. http://gcommo.com

Are LOD and GCO also under Quest Online, or are they being developed by a different entity?

The answer  (they are both 3000AD games) is in the FAQ located on the website (URLs are in the post you excerpted)  for each game.

If you went and actually looked at the All Aspect Warfare games (also available on Steam), it should be painfully obvious that I've already designed, developed, shipped and made quite a bit of money on a game just like this. Go to the link and play the demo if you like.

LOD is just a smaller scale, with much better visuals, has a small space component and is an MMO.

So yeah. Been there. Done that. Just gonna do it a bit better this time.

There is a standard.

Free to play only got coined for games that never had box releases or were pay to play software rights. The free contends with the software. All free to play games are free to download, free to make an account, and free to access.

Their shops are tagged on to make a profit. That's all it's ever meant.

That's what the term means.

Don't confuse it.

There needs to be a standard of what is actually "included" for free.  Yes, I understand the basic definition, but so many games have implemented their version of "free" differently that there needs to be a standard.  That being said, it's more of a general topic for the pub, not specifically this thread or game.

~Ripper

No, there doesn't need to be a standard on how you monetize a game. Every company has a different method of monetising their game based on that game alone. So no two games (or companies) are ever going to be able to conform to some arbitrary "standard".

And with all F2P games, you know exactly what you're getting for "free". If you're not paying for it, then its free. Where is the confusion exactly?

In general, I really don't understand what your issue is with Tribute.  It's an F2P game and that's the RMT currency.

That being said, I personally have some issues with how the Tribute market has been implemented.  Specifically, my issues are:

  • Alganon is marketed as a F2P, but you need to pay real money to unlock levels 31 - 50.  I agree with many players and Derek Smart that if you've played the game up to level 30, you've obviously enjoyed it and should throw the developer some coin.  I don't have any problems with that.  My issue is more a matter of semantics and perception.  If you say the "game" is free, then the game--including all levels, quests and content--should be free, IMO.  Unfortunately, there's no standard for F2P game definitions, so it's up to each developer to create their own. I'd rather see the entire game be free and have the option to spend money on other things that are for the sake of aesthetics or convenience.  This is more of a quibble, really, since I enjoy the game enough that I would pay to unlock those levels.
  • Pay-to-Win - I compared a level 30 tribute set of gear to the best in-game gear I'd found and equipped.  The Tribute Gear gave a very clear advantage in HP, Defense and Attack power. That concerns me.

Exactly.

Which is why when people post stuff such as that which you replied to, I just do an eye roll and move along.

Well, uhm, yes, Tribute is the in-game currency. Please read this.

Pretty sure it's unfixable, and would need a ground-up rewrite of the core code. Good luck doing that on the revenue a couple of dozen players brings in.

No, it is not unfixable. That's just false.

In fact, in several Alganon forum posts as well as dev blogs, I have stated that we are going to look into sorting out some performance issues in the server (completely separate from the client) code itself.

The fact is, everything has been prioritized. Since the latency issue is only an "issue" for some people (depending on their connection, where they are playing from etc) it was very low priority.

In fact, we only have servers on the West coast, yet we have people connecting from all over the world. That, apart from server code that is sorely in need of some tweaking and such, is basically the bulk of the problem. In tweaking and revising the server code, we're also going to be setting up additional servers on the East coast as well as in some international countries.

It is all in my blog.

That would be even funnier if only a fraction of it were even true. I'm sure that myself and the dev team are reading this and going wtf. But ce la vie I suppose.

I think the game's own 2009 failure, coupled with the number of fixes, tweaks,  improvements and features that have gone in since I took over the company and team, speak for themselves. And only those who are actually PLAYING the game would know that.

Thanks for that well thought out post. We're working on a number of things that we hope will strike a balance for both PvE and PvP players without sacrificing too much in terms of gameplay and such. All in all game balancing is a tightrope and no game is going to ever get it done right.

Beta? Wow. Well the game has come a LONG way since then. Still got some things to do, but the pop is picking up and 2011 is going to be an even better year than 2010 for the game. Check it out.

heh yeah, tell that to our bank account.

Let's hope you choose MMORPG to make your announcement, although with your historical reception here I can't see why you would.

Well I have nothing against the site since I can't hold them liable or responsible for the actions of their forum denizens. Since they tend to police the forums very well - at least imo - I have no complaints.

Nevertheless, when the news (whatever is it about) goes out, I'm sure that they will carry it. And of course the Usual Suspects will be here in the forum. Then it will just be business as usual.

While I'm sure you won't care to divulge that here and now, can we expect a press release in the next 30 days?

Yes. And not just a press release.

I'm afraid that I have to disagree with your blanket statement about this game needing to make money in order for another to come along. It's a much more complicated matter than the performance of one game, especially their first. The management has been replaced and the project is being worked on.

You might be right, but I doubt that it's due to your understanding of the inner workings of a development studio and it's financial backing. If this company didn't have some new life by now, the plug would have already been pulled. I hope they are in the process of taking the next steps and not in the process of selling off assets.

Im not saying the game isnt making money im saying if this game fails the next one wouldnt be much better because getting finical backing when your only experience in the market is a failed game would be extremely difficult. Also most of the good programmers would probably jump ship.

Sorry, but as someone already stated, that's just not how it works. At all.

Oh, ok it had a bad launch, that would explain it then.

Again, we seem to be lost in the "which game is  "best" " logic.  Algonon is the best  EQ style fantasy mmorpg with an eve style skill research system?  There see i can do it.

Not saying this game is the best thing out there.  Seems under rated compared to the cometition.

It was basically a number of factors.

1. It was designed and developed to compete with WoW. Without the technical expertise nor the budget or marketing to actually pull it off.

2. It was released in a botched state and while still in Beta - back in Dec 2009. The "soft launch" was just done in order to soften the blow.

3. When you consider #1 and #2 above, the fact that you also had to buy ($39.99) the game and pay a monthly sub ($19) was the final blow.

Since I took over, the guys and I have been working out butts off to correct all three of the above. We did, the game is finished, is F2P and is quite a bit of fun.

OK, I'm not saying that it is the best MMO game out there or anything, but it is a fun and decent game that has been growing since the official 2.0 launch in late April 2010.

Trust me, we're not idiots; if the game didn't have potential, it would have been shutdown by now. Instead, it is still going strong though yes, we still have aways to go before we all start rejoicing.

For us an ACTIVE account follows this path:
1. Sign-up (web page)
2. Activated (from email sent from step 1)
3. Logged in (from step 2)
4. Played (from step 3) by character creation etc etc
So when I say that we're approaching 100K active accounts, that is exactly what it means.

Well, this actually means nothing. I'm probably counted as an active player because i made an account and tried the game for like 1 hour several months ago... :|

Useful metrics would be the peak and average concurrent users around the clock, THAT would be interesting to see.

There is a lot of difference in saying "we have 100k active accounts" and "100k accounts have been activated and logged at least once at some point in time"...

From the point of view of someone in Smart's position, not as much as you think.  When he makes reports regarding the situation of the game, he is essentially being paid to make even bad news sound like good news.  By the strictest definition in MMOs and other things, an active account is one that is not canceled, so therefore every account that is for a F2P game is active, even if you haven't played in years due to the fact that you never pay for it and therefore never have to cancel it.  The possibility that 100k people made accounts is highly probable.  However, the possibility that all100k are actively playing the game is, from what I have heard, highly improbable.  Derek Smart did tell the truth when he said that "we have 100k active accounts", even if it wasn't the whole truth.

You're wrong. Period.

And if you actually READ what I wrote, you will see that we have various metrics. Even if we counted lifetime accounts, what exactly is the problem if we're happy with our numbers and metrics? Whether you have 10K or 100K active accounts, the only relevancy is in if you are actually making money. So it really doesn't matter if only 1K played the game in any one month. Nobody cares.

Seriously, is the math so hard to comprehend that people who just want to keep arguing for the sake of arguing are just willing to ignore common sense in favor of continued attacks and commentary which has no merit or basis of fact?

And no, I'm not paid to sell anything and apart from...argghh forget it, go read what I have already written. Or don't.

Thank you for insinuating that I am an idiot.  As you said yourself, name calling and personal attacks are a sign of weakness, and that is something you have just done.  Congratulations by backing yourself into this corner.

I started typing up something, finished it, then just deleted it when it eventually hit me that you couldn't possibly be serious.
