ME2 is easily my favorite game of all time, best RPG of its generation? definitely not. I think Witcher 2 and Dragon Age were better RPGs but ME2 definitely delivers the best set of characters and story combination I have played to date.

I've definitely tried to love GW2 but I have many of the same issues with it that others have discussed, I just don't feel immersed in this game, the world itself just feels like a big playground. While I do have some issues with the combat (I feel its way too floaty and lacks impact) it works and makes the fights at least more mobile giving you a little more freedom then your typical tab target mmo.

I think the magic was lost for me when I discovered that people would just grind the exact same events over and over again to level and that these "dynamic" events aren't really so dynamic at all. For a large majority of the events I came across people knew to the second when it would repeat, kill everything in seconds, move to phase 2-3 etc... and wouldn't do anything else leaving the rest of the map vacant because its more efficient to stay there and grind. The highest level I have reached is in the 60s so my experience with the game is limited but every time I sit down to take a serious shot at GW2 I find myself hitting the same wall.

Really can't believe the author thought the space combat wasn't up to par as it is the one thing that brought many to the game from the start. This isn't space invaders where you one shot things lol.  There is stragety needed to make the most of your attacks and just pounding the fire button isn't it.  Your ship build and Duty officers placement can make a big difference also, odd nothing was said about the whole Duty officer missions and play.

Basically nothing was said about most of the game such as PvP, the many and varied story line missions, Duty Officers, the many and varied ways you can advance (including just doing Duty Officer missions), that it makes me wonder if the author really actually played the game or just did the few things for a review.  A 74 rating for this game is beyond unfair in my opinion and I don't think the crowds that play the game would agree to that either or the many Fleets(guilds)  throughout the galaxy with their holdings of Starbases, mining and other fleet holdings...odd that wasn't mentioned either.  One has to wonder if the author ever grouped or talked to any who were playing this game.

This review really is seriously lacking for people that actually understand this game from top to bottom and understand all the systems. Not a single instance talking about the PvP, how on earth is traveling problematic in this game when you can transwarp everywhere with the little icon to the right of the missions description and can even lower the cooldown on your Spacedock/Qonos transwarp with duty officers.

"As always, there was one uber-ship that seemed to take forever to finally kill…and my fingers told the tale. Ed. Note: Yes, I utilized auto-fire but that didn't help either. There always had to be at least one or two fingers on the keyboard or the mouse."

Lol what? are you telling me you play MMOs with a controller or something because every single MMO ever required using at least 1 or 2 fingers on the keyboard or mouse just to move (WASD to move ring a bell?). The reason the Uber-ship takes forever to kill is probably the way you set up your bridge officer skills or your captain skills and talents, did you get any feedback from other players or ask for help on how to build your particular role?

Essential skills for just about every captain: Tactical Teams, Attack Patterns (if your going for damage), Hazard Emitters for clearing plasma and damaging debuffs. Emergency Power to Shields and Weapons, Transfer Shield Strength and Auxiliary to Structural which can repair your ship and other players. There are so many essential things that go into combat that you will never experience until you hit the endgame where using the wrong build is essentially suicide against tactical cubes or bastion voth ships.

Don't even get me started on the part where you said you didn't feel like a captain, there is a system in the game which literally lets you issue orders to hundreds of your officers. The system itself is beyond complex and there are so many things you would never understand about its importance without actually researching it or asking players about. For people that play they will know these right away:

nadorc, fed and kdf support missions for very rare duty officers, resettle colonists so you can start the fortifying colony missions for very rare doffs, trafficking contraband missions and inspect civilian freighters so you can stack the contraband. flight deck officer missions, asylum missions for refugees, devonite and shapeshifting locket missions for nadorc so that you can get the alien artifacts which can be used for mk 12 consoles.

It is absolutely painful how much this review misses and I haven't even scratched the surface yet with what is needed to truly understand the complexity and fun you can get from this game. This game gives trekkies everything they could ask for. There is so much fan service and lore that I am still finding things years into playing it that pay homage to even the most obscure episodes of every series.

They have literally made entire enemy races out of aliens that showed up in only 1 or 2 episodes or movies (Hirogen, Voth, Elachi, Solanae, Species 8472 and Remans).
Ignore, my post pretty much mirrored other responses.

The animations are closer to a game made in the early 2000s then a game made in the last 3 years and that says it all. I felt like I was transported back in time to 1999 Everquest days, while the game itself is looking decent in most other departments the animations are definitely lacking. The running and bow animations being the biggest offenders in my book, there needs to be some variety in the running at the very least, look to GW2 for inspiration because if that game has anything its great animation quality.
Beta BETA BETA!!
To be honest 150 hours is actually pretty common by MMO standards, last time I leveled a character in a game (Swtor) it took about 6 days 7 hours and 23 minutes of play time to hit 50. In WoW I hit cap much quicker coming out at about 3 days and change, leveling in that game is so quick you out level almost every zone especially in heirloom gear. So all in all the amount of leveling content is looking to be pretty much on par for a typical MMO these days.

I seriously can't understand why people would want to go back to a system like this at all, It was completely inefficient and an absolute waste of time. To me this is the equivalent of saying "To hell with cell phones because its just too damn convenient, lets all go back to land lines... no wait! lets go even further because it takes the face to face contact out of communicating, we should get rid of phones all together so we can force people to talk to one another" lol.

Why would you get rid of a system that works and is a direct evolution of that kind of tired, tedious system? There was a reason that global AHs were created in the first place because people wanted to actually play the game and not stand around for hours spamming chat channels or going to websites to sell the most basic crap. I don't have time for that kind of nonsense, even in games with this system (Eve Online) you at least have a legitimate reason for it because about 90% of all items are created by players and cannot be found from drops from killing enemies.

Yes, the game begins at endgame. The reason why because that is where you are going to spend the majority of your time unless your one of those Alt-itis people who just can't get one character to max. At most you will spend probably 50-75 hours leveling to max level which is pretty much standard at this point with modern MMOs. You will spend thousands of hours in endgame, thousands.... Why on earth should those 50-75 hours leveling be anything more then just story/lore filler and learning the fundamental mechanics of the game for the challenge that comes with endgame? I don't understand the mentality at all when people want everything midgame and it screams to me just how lazy that player is when they try to make that argument. They don't want to work for the good stuff, they don't want to dedicate the time it takes to master the game they just want everything now and with zero effort.

The true challenge with MMOs comes with overcoming the main villians in epic battles and most MMOs are correct in leaving the most dangerous enemies and greatest rewards for the endgame, how stupid would it be if you get to kill the main enemy in the middle of your leveling journey or get the best gear? its just nonsensical.

Neverwinter with an Elder Scrolls skin.
Didn't really expect to get a beta invite since I am never that lucky but to my shock....I got an invite!! hell yea! :)

I have pretty much stopped caring all together about FFXIV, its not a good sign to me all that they can't seem to get their problems in order to open up digital sales. I give them a chance to make an impression and with this game I definitely enjoyed my time in the beta but, the more I see that they can't resolve even the most standard of MMO problems or are even planning for them, just doesn't convince me that these guys (even after the debacle that was the first release) know what they are doing. The amount of apologies from the game designer does nothing for me, don't apologize, don't go to websites and try to appease the players and the potential buyers just get your damn game in order and that will be all the apology anyone needs.

There are just too many games on the market to deal with this kind of inadequate planning and back-pedalling. Trying to spin this into a positive is just that, spin. I absolutely hate when people try to apologize for their game like if this hasn't happened so many times in the past enough to justify our complaints or that Square Enix is "different" and aren't held to the same standard as other MMO developers. I was really excited for this game before this mess, I was ready to jump on board but now I have zero confidence that these people know what they are doing or will be able to deliver quality content in a timely manner after launch. There are tons of great PC and console games coming out soon that I see no reason at all to sit and wait for these people to finally get organized.

I guess you play the MMORPG.com version of WoW, you know the one where every question gets a troll response or every dungeon run is full of nothing but wipes by bad players who don't care. Yea I must not play that version because if I ask a question in trade I get an answer and most of my dungeon runs never run into problems. You know if you want to hype your game you don't have to exaggerate it just makes you look desperate to prove just how great the game is (Hey everyone!!! look how awesome and helpful the community of this game is!!!! I'm having so much fun look at me!!!).

Every game has a helpful community in the beginning, hardly anyone knows what to do so there is no point in being a dick because you may have to ask for help at some point. Just wait till the second or third month when more people start hitting endgame and the game is understood better, watch how quickly the community changes when people know what to expect and how to play.

Love my panderan monk, it was one of the first things I did when the expansion released was level a monk to 90 and I had a great time doing it. The lore, the overall pandaren asian artstyle is fantastic and really I find most complaints about the pandaren completely unfounded and made by people who just don't care for the game or don't even play it so they don't really know how well they have been implemented. I think it all comes down to people having seen the kung fu panda movie and lumping both into the same category and using that as an excuse to continue hating WoW. People can except space goats and native american inspired cows but some how asian pandas crosses the line , yea me thinks they just don't want to like it.

Oh man, lol this is getting a little crazy now that both ESO and Wildstar are going the sub route, did the date change to 2005 while we weren't looking? I have never had a problem with a subscription model myself, my problems have always been with the games quality or lack there of. If the game sucks then yes I probably will not continue playing past the first month. If the game is great then I will be more then willing to spend the $15 to continue playing because to me that is chump change in comparison to the amount of enjoyment I will get for the money.

I never really planned on playing ESO from the get go mostly because it was rumored to have a F2P model. Now that the game is going sub based, my interest level has immediately risen because the chances of a ridiculous cash shop ruining it are much lower then it most certainly would have been with F2P. With Wildstar coming out around the same time its going to be tough deciding on which to play, I haven't been excited for MMOs in a long time but with the sub announcement for both Wild and ESO I am actually once again excited to see how they turn out.

Taken from OP.

"As a new player, the first thing you have to come to terms with for FFXIV is that the game is not striving to be ground-breaking."

That is the biggest thing that stands out for me right now, what is this game doing that warrants me to move to FFXIV? I don't have the time to play more then one MMO at a time so there has to be something, some feature that really makes me interested in seeing it through into the end and I didn't see that in my time with the beta. The crafting is good but not something I would drop a game for, the combat is lackluster from what i played, the world was very nice and I really like the character models and animations, but I have to ask myself what is it about this game that is going to make me continue playing?

"Combat is totally hit or miss; you're either a fan, or you aren't. I personally hate it."

For me the combat is a negative as well, perhaps past level 20 it gets better but really I never once felt threatened even with upwards of 7 enemies pelting me during a Fate. As an Arcanist I had a heal and a life drain that were considerably strong, almost healing to full health in one cast. While I am not the kind of person to get all pissed about a lack of challenge in leveling, (hell, I still enjoying playing WoW) but in this game its compounded even more with the long CD on abilities. When the enemy takes just as long to attack that I could literally avoid every heavy attack with time to spare, it just comes off so dry and unstimulating.

"The FATE system is like a better version of Warhammer Online's PQ system, or weaker version of Rift's invasions."

To me the fate system comes off almost exactly like Warhammer's PQ system, they pop up in the same place, on a timer and the mobs tend to be the same ones that are seen in the area except in mass. I don't know if the Fate system eventually starts dropping loot for completion once you start getting into the higher levels but I don't recall getting any loot from a Fate outside of experience and gil like you would get in Warhammer with the loot bags.

My final thoughts...

Overall the game at this point, from what I played at least...is alright. The things that do work well for me is the world, the animations and the creatures in the game. The creatures are probably the coolest thing about the game so far, even the most basic creatures look great and some are downright disturbing like the Goobbue and the Gigantoad. The game world looks ok as well (I played through Limsa-Lominsa) but the low resolution textures are noticeable and kinda degrade the style up close, I would hope that they would use better textures then the ones used on the console for the PC but I did not see that with the beta. The ground textures especially look bad, compared to the textures used for the cliff sides which actually use heightmaps they look super flat and boring. Outside of the lighting, the game looks like it could have been made in 06.

To end, the game comes off really uninspired outside of its looks, its very basic and by the book, making sure to grab a little bit of the mechanics from recent games (like public quests) without really doing something huge to set it apart from everything else. IP names don't do much for me so the Final Fantasy IP isn't enough for me to automatically jump on board. I play MMOs mostly because there is that one thing that makes a game really cool and worth seeing through into the end (tera's combat, swtor's storylines and WoW's raiding for instance) and I still haven't seen anything with FFXIV that has yet brought that feeling for me and until I see that something I can't justify taking the plunge as off this moment.

I don't know if the population is growing so I can only speak for myself but I returned to check out some of the new content. I really have a hard time staying interested in the game outside of a day but I am trying to accentuate the good things about the game and focus on that (like the new content) so at least I am giving it a chance.

I think it might be the art style even though I actually love the textures used in the game, It could just be the drab color of the game that really makes my eyes get heavy but I am getting off topic. My server at least has always had a solid population and I did get put into a overflow server for the first time since the opening release weeks. Is that evidence for a growing population?....probably not but it at least shows that our server still has lots of activity.

Guess I'm in the minority on this site as far as liking what I saw.

You're not the only one. People who just hate it are just going to complain and complain and complain. They are not going to change the artstyle, believe me. Beside aging better, voxel world destruction looks less ridiculous when using stylized art...

oh come one people, stop the lame "it's aging better" argument for stylized cartoon graphics, SWTOR used the same lame argument and fact is, it just looked cheesy on release, today and will still be cheesy in 10 years.

e.g. Age of Conan isn't "stylized", it's looking great since 2008, got regular engine updates and still looks great today and will in 10 years.

http://youtu.be/KEQRwPuq8Rg

http://youtu.be/00dHRBaX-f0

http://youtu.be/Ok4uZf7bJrY

That's how EQ should look like imho

The idea that "stylized cartoon graphics" are better because they age better is pure nonsense and it tends to be perpetuated by those that want that visual style or are just ignorant of the facts regarding graphical features. The reason older games that went the "realistic" route didn't age well was that they just looked horrible to begin with. Everquest 1 and 2 for example, used incredibly low resolution textures that were already being surpassed by other games and they were an eyesore to look at to begin with. Both of them (and many MMOs in the early 2000s) didn't adopt any of the more advanced features coming around in gaming like higher resolution textures, bump mapping, virtual displacement mapping, dynamic shadows, physics and particle effects like those seen in single player games.

So what we got was a kind of PC dark age so to speak with tons of advanced features being created and developers not wanting to implement them into their game engines. So yes, many games from around the year 2000 to about 2007, looked pretty terrible and still do because on a graphical level they WERE terrible. That is not the case anymore with the more recent adaptation of advanced features by every mainstream game engine and it is starting to show with games like Crysis, Battlefield 3, Planetside 2, Age of Conan and The Secret World which are all use more realistic art styles. They look great and will always look great from here on out because they are better at the most fundamental level. This idea that stylistic graphics age better is just plain false and falls completely flat when you compare realistic looking games made in the last 6 years to similar styled games made before that.

I can't speak for anyone other then me, but for me the reason I play female characters in games is because I don't project myself into the characters. The character I create is a character in that particular world living its own story and I am just directing him or her through it. I could never be that character so its pointless to even try and make it like you (in my opinion) so I just make it its own identifiable entity. Its a fictional character in a fictional world so what does it matter what gender it is? or why even care to project anything on to it because it can have its own identity within the world?

TLDR: I play a character.....not me, females usually look and sound cooler then the males so I play them nothing more needs to be said.

The blame going around in this thread is beyond hilarious "WoW killed the genre", "Developers dumbed down the games..its their fault" lololololol you people are living in a dream world.

Do you know what the problem is?

Do you really want to know who is at fault for the death of MMOs?

the answer....is you.

Yea that's right, the problem with MMOs is us, the players.

For every person that complained about too much grind, that things take too long or are too hard, guess what....you got what you wanted. I hope we are enjoying ourselves, because we only have ourselves to blame for the sad state of MMOs. Every time you come to these forums to whine or to praise games just remember....you reap what you sow.

And I can just feel the denials popping up already, "NAH AH...I always wanted challenging content and game mechanics", "I didn't do anything, it was everyone else that wanted that crap!!! not me!!!".
