So what he's saying is, even though action style combat has failed in every MMORPG to date, the EQnext team refuses to acknowledge this and will charge ahead into the abyss. Okay, I guess.

Actually what I think he's saying is:

Combat is pretty basic and raw at the moment. Instead of spending a lot of time and resources building it behind closed doors and finding out you guys don't like it. We would rather build it openly and get everyones input on what works and on what sucks.

Where did the RPG go?

Well....

As the games in this genre give you higher quality graphics, more refined mechanics, more and more emotes, etc. etc. They require less imagination and when you use less imagination you get less role play.

When we were kids we had to make up everything. Nowadays it's all made up for us.

Life.

People play a few roles during the day. Its just most people think playing a role in a game is different, because games are for kids, and they are adults......I don't know..........its natural for me to be a role player.

We are the sane ones, the rest of the world needs to catch up.

I'll drink to that

If you have an imagination... you role play... Whether you'd like to admit it or not.

Everyone is role playing in a MMORPG whether they realize it or not (dancing naked on a table and exclaiming "Your Mom" is an act of Role Playing) .  I believe the extent to which people roleplay is the point you are trying to argue.

In that case, there is no issue here. Everyone is a RPer.

I assume you include chatting about the latest Marvel movies, min-maxing builds, theorycrafting, talking about relatives and neighbors, and loot drama.

Correct: Everyone is an RPer

We play these games to be entertained. We login, create a character, name them, choose a sex and usually choose a class. You enter a fictional world and begin playing the role of "Ikixurass.... Warlock From Beyond The Beyond" and begin melting the faces of your foes.

When in game.... Chatting about the latest Marvel movies, min-maxing builds, theorycrafting, talking about relatives and neighbors, and loot drama are things you are doing while you're roleplaying.

Some are just a lot more hardcore about it than most, but the fact remains.... You are role playing.

OOC chat is not roleplaying it's the direct opposite of it, min-maxing is gaming not roleplaying. IF you believe any of that is truly roleplaying you will not last long at all on a NWN 1or 2 RP player world. Roleplaying in gaming terms has a very distinct meaning and describes a certain type of player, playing a game does not make you a RPer by default, it might make you a gamer (if you play them enough), but it doesn't make you an Rper.

You're talking hardcore.

So tell me where do you draw the line? Where does the role playing begin? Do I have to talk in a funny voice?

When I was a kid we played Cops and Robbers, Cowboys and Indians, Knights and guess what, We didn't  know it or think about it, but we were role playing.

When you play an RPG you are role playing whether you like it or not. You are playing the role of your in game character and how far you take that has no bearing on the black and white.

Your remarks about NWN concerns "Hardcore" role playing.

And IMHO when you take something too seriously, it ceases to be playing. But that's another debate.

One more point.. WHy would the op ask this question if they weren't in fact asking about what defines a person who is a role-player, as opposed to what is a RPG game?

The op's question is pretty short and simple "What makes some one a role player?"

My answer to that question is short and simple:

All of us who play and enjoy this genre are role player's, some like to take it to a deeper level.

After a while it becomes "not worth it" to group up with players who won't continue if it's not easy, players who are poisonous people and who need to be spanked, lazy players, abusive players, players who have no concern for anyone but themselves and will leave a group as soon as they get what they want.

And that is exactly why 2014 MMOs put more emphasis on solo play. MMOs are played by a different crowd these days and the communities that made group play more fun than solo play have pretty well scattered to the winds.

It's a very rare thing these days to get good PUGs together and it was the norm 10 years ago. Anti-social, selfish, just plain bad players or min-maxer wannabes with their recount spam, were exceptions back then, now they're the norm.

People gravitate to the fun activities in MMOs. We can wish for great group play like in the good ole days all we want, but as long as PUGs remain mostly toxic, people will just solo whenever they can't hook-up with the handful of trusted friends they can sometimes group with, and that, is the majority of the time.

Sadly MMORPG community's reflect our real world ones all too closely these days.

I look at this.. then i look at black desert. Then i laugh at this.

Looks are'nt everything

Well it means a lot to me based on the timing of a game release.Like i love the looks of EQ2 and FFXI both much older games but that was fine back then.

Also  i THINK that what i see statement really meant was the whole scope of the game,Landmark is VERY far from a complete mmorpg experience,it is as of this point still a Minecraft 2.0.

I consider Landmark a really really cheap way for SOE to get something out there and as a testing ground for Next to help fund Next.I strongly believe that SOE wishes they went the crowd funding direction but chose this decision for various reasons of which we dont know them all.

That whole idea Georgeson is talking about is really nothing more than proving why they got the Storybricks  program into their agenda. All it does is allow them to link multiple directions for advancement,in this case talking about achievements ,which to me is just more linear questing. It also completely removes the grouping idea because each individual will be on their OWN separate agenda.I dont like anti community ideas.

Also as we have heard before, that individual loot system is just another single player design why even bother with a mmo then.Individual loot also removes any plausible realistic scenario of taking down a boss,it actually turns the game into nothing but a individual loot table. Also  based on past Everquest SOE gives TOO much loot,i spent so many wasted hours clearing out loot,it actually made me log out of the games several times. That is because i felt like i was wasting my time away spending 2-3 hours a day JUST clearing out unwanted loot.

Landmark... is just plain and simply (love it or hate it) not a traditional MMORPG.

There is nothing cheap about the amount of resources needed to produce Landmark.

Everything about Landmark is basically an experiment including the way it is being developed.

There doesn't seem to be any kind of a mad rush to complete Landmark and that for me, is a good thing.

Landmark really isn't my type of a game (I'm not really the builder type) But I enjoy logging in from time to time and watching it progress. I really do like many ( but not all ) of the concepts.

It is... what it is

No, I think we need a new fresh game play. It has been said for years that we need something more fresh than your standard, ThemePark, single player quest driven MMO. But almost all AAA MMOs are just that.

And there should be another option beside sandbox.

Why not a quest driven one where the quests are global instead of single player, for example?

Why not a faction PvP where it is actually possible to "win" thus triggering significant rewards and some sort of world wipe.

Why not a huge world where you can spend months exploring it and not see it all.

I mean, just anything beside variations on the tired themepark, quest driven, gameplay which we have seen for the last decade. Game like Elite Dangerous are OK, I guess, but I have yet to see what it brings to the MMO genre. It seems to be mostly single and limited multiplayer, haven't seen much of the massively multiplayer to it.

We can't really make any judgements yet, especially for a first iteration.

But I'm hoping this is the direction that EQnext and Storybricks are taking us.

Or if you're on a budget.... you could always go with a 12 pack of Poop Socks

I can't vote in this pole.

IMHO: Many of the points are appealing but have nothing to do with being niche and everything to do with being developed well.

There are some impressive Earth sized world engines in development as we speak.

Imagine a single server game world where you could never see or do it all. One that would always be mysterious.

Hopefully we'll get there one day in the not too distant future, no matter the theme.

There are good arguments on either side of the fence.

When someone figures out the best system....  You guys just let me know.

edit: The biggest flaw to the system in ESO for me, is not having a true open world and fencing off the factions from each other.

WHy would I try and contradict a point that has nothing at all to do with this thread? That's the part you don't seem to get, what does anything you're saying have to do with the topic here? Roleplay is a community aspect, it has nothing at all to do with game devs, wider audiences, etc...

Not if you want video games to support RP.

We are talking about RPing in video games .. in fact, you said "community aspect". So it is fair game to discuss if it is likely to get a RP community in video games.

Everyone is role playing in a MMORPG whether they realize it or not (dancing naked on a table and exclaiming "Your Mom" is an act of Role Playing) .  I believe the extent to which people roleplay is the point you are trying to argue.

You know.... fun is what you make it.

You will get tired and bored of the content in each and every game that has ever or will be made.

The most fun and most entertaining time I've ever had in an MMORPG was in WoW. It was brought to me, courtesy of my fearless  mind controlling undead priest of a guild leader "Wicked"  He made WoW tens times more entertaining than the game was on it's own. This guy was just good at making fun.

He had something that most of us lack in this day and age....  The magic sauce that made the earlier MMORPG's so much fun....

He had an Imagination

Lord of the Pez

FTW

Mark me down in the "Wish there wasn't flying mounts" camp

Just like in the real world: Flying makes the world soooo much smaller

What are you talking about? Aren't UO & EQ still running?

Yeah and this "GTO" is still running too.

Hey Hey we're the Monkey's....  and people say we monkey around

$300 more?

Where are you getting your pricing from?

Just to give you an idea, a high end 4 core I7 cpu retails for about $350

edit:

I3 retail about $150

I5 retail about $250

I7 retail about $350

Just to reiterate OP

The Bios is the core and if there is something wrong with it.... no cleaning, fixing and replacing of any components will do any good.
