I realize their are other "PvP" games that do better but seeing as how they usually fail in terms of PvE content while WoW offers both, I will argue that WoW's PvP is still very good. Also offers many different ways to PvP which is nice.
• Talent specialization, and if I remember correct it was the first (or one of the first) games to introduce such a system that is now deemed mandatory in most games.
• A vast array of spells with the ability to change your role with most classes.

I guess the worst thing about WoW how it "caters" to the casual gamers. While I will agree it kills the game a bit, I myself don't have much time to dedicate to the game anymore and the arguement how there is no challenge is completely false. I would like to say to anyone who says WoW has no challenge to show me your ICC Heroic 25 Lich King achievement or just shut up. The game has a challenge, sure not on any normal 10 man raid for the most part, but if thats not hard enough, just ramp up the difficulty. Don't just beat the easiest setting and then complain about how easy it was.

 

There are other games that I believe are superior to WoW or pioneered many aspects of MMO's (UO/EQ for instance), but thats not a real reason to hate on WoW. It had 11 million players at one point and I do agree they flaunt that fact too much, but I think they've earned the right. Blizzard is a terrific company. They had Diablo and Starcraft and even the original Warcraft long before WoW was conceived.

 

I guess I can't comprehend why people play WoW for 10 minutes and then complain about why it's the worst thing ever created while most games try to copy off it because of how much of a success it is. I will agree WoW copied aspects from other games but thats what you do when you find something that just works. Why forsake it altogether then you can change it and make it a part of your game.

 

Well I suppose thats my defence for a game that I personally believe is one of the top MMO's ever.

 1. Many old school MMORPG players, meaning pre-WoW players, hate WoW because it took what they were used to and almost turned it on its head.

2. I was one of those old school players. I couldn't stand the boring quests, because they had you running all around doing what seemed like chores for lazy NPC's. I much preferred gathering a group of 5 people, exploring the world until I found a good spot to camp, and then proceed to slaughtering mobs for hours with those 5 people. You learned and mastered teamwork and how each class complimented other classes before you were even level 20. Plus, open world dungeon crawls were a blast.

3. After WoTLK released, I finally gave the game another shot and I think it's the best game on the market. Pound for pound, feature for feature, the game just offers more than any other game and it's polished (aka high quality).

4. LOTRO is the first game to offer phasing. WoTLK did it several years after the first appearance of phasing.

5. The ability to change your role at a whim is not a benefit for those people that care about individuality and carving a special place in the world for their character. Now in WoW it's like, dual spec or go home. Oh? You're a Warrior? You better be dual specced tank and dps if you want to compete. Now everyone who wants to be just one thing gets screwed.

6. IMHO, it's the community that killed WoW for me. Why in the world would I subject myself to a community that cares more about getting Epic gear than forming friendships? Back in the day, you got an invite to a group for just being you and knowing your class. In WoW, you need to show a gear score, achievements, and be committed to playing several hours in a row if you want to take part in the challenging content. WoW is casual friendly, but the community that's good at gaming is not.

A Man to that. I recently stoped playing WOW, because this constant fight to get geared, and for those who think WOW does not have hardcore players, its become so hard to get in to good guilds now, that you have to go on their website and fill out an application. lol

 LOL. Even though it would be fun, as just something else to do when you feel like just mellowing out and get away from the thick of it for a moment, that's why i love the graphics and the flying mounts, it can just take you away, but had the most fun in BG pvp.

You have it backwards. WOW took from all that came before it and tweaked on those idea's. Nothing really about WoW was orginal other then their storyline. What made WoW so successful was alot obout when it was released. Their really hasn't been an awesome game released since the best of pre-World of Warcraft. Blizzard marketed the game by advertising hard which was smart. It's a relatively easy game to play with low system demands compared to modern day game requirements. WoW is the perfect CASUAL GAMER GAME. It captured the casual gamer market all the while putting us hardcore gamers out to pasture who demand much more from a game. Thats why i brand it WoW-mart.  Has alot of nice items but if you need a specialty item you need to go to a specialty shop and the market needs a game that tailors to the specialty/hardcore player. I actually  want a fantasy based MMORPG game that sorts the casual gamer out. Maybe somebody will in the future have the guts to market one  for us that prefer something different, something more challenging.

What you say is probably not going to happen for the following reasons:

1- Ppl creat games for money, so they are going to simulate WOW, because it's obvious that the WOW way is what most ppl want.

2- Lets face it, hardcore gamers are a minority, especially now-days, whos got the time to spend that much time in a game the gives nothing in return? unless of cours, your exceptionally good- and in that case you would love WOW, because in  WOW's international tournament, you can win upwards of $75,000, lol. If you think WOW is so easy, and your so good, why don't you join the tournament and make awesome money?

Most obnoxious playerbase in the history of MMOs. This is true of almost every Blizzard game, something about their games just appeals to the worst of the internet.

 

Unbalanced classes by design. Blizzzard deliberately breaks classes by OPing them in order to extend subscriptions. They know that their immature players will jump on an OP class and play it until they next OPed class is made, instead of quitting the game altogether because they're bored of it.

 

Raids are boring. I'm not going to spend 4 hours every night for a CHANCE to get loot, sorry. If they cut out everything but raiding, WoW would've never taken off. Log in for the first time and wait 1 HOUR, then spend another 3-4 hours for nothing but a small chance at loot....no one would play that.

 

Theme park feel. Blizzard managed to completely remove any realistic feel to the game world and made it just one stop after the other. Nothing in the game has any substance.

 

Last but not least, they completely destroyed the feel and mojo of the Hoirde by forcing elves and paladins into the faction. This also gave Horde what it was missing, a massive preteen base that didn't want to look "ugly" so they played alliance. Now all the horde races are vastly outnumbered by elves and the original races are a joke to the new, "pretty" horde players.

 

THere are other reasons that I can't think of now, but I'm reminded every time I go back and check out patch notes on the wow site from time to time.

 Nah! It doesn't look like you hate WOW. Way would anybody that hates something keep checking up on it. I think your probably more like me, just very disappointed with WOW. It had tremendous potential and it seemed an incredibly fun and fulfilling game, But after you've worked so hard and spent so much time to reach 80 and ones you get there you realize that your only really at the begining and the game play has tremendously changed and  now your going to spend just as much time grinding with farming and gearing (as much as you did to reach 80) to reach a point where you can some-what compete in PVP, and that for PVE, your going to have to spend hours and hours doing the same thing over and over again to get geared up and your doing this now amoung a bunch of self-Obsorbed jerks, you finally relize, it was not worth it.

How are you comparing the strategy of PVP to the fact that it has absolutely 0 effect on anything, outside of that PVP instance? A Mini-Game is something that is just done on the side of the focus of the main game, WoW's primary focus is PVE and has been since they added in Battlegrounds (when I quit the first time).

The only part of PVP in WoW that's not a Mini-Game, is the fight over WG. WoW's PVE can and does effect the world. Most of the dungeons don't, but they still focus on you getting up to the point where you can participate in the dungeons that do effect the world and make changes on your server. Epic PVP gear can be replaced more effectively by the gear you can get in non-Heroics.

In WoW, if you do PVP you're just wasting time and piddling around for fun. If you leveled up to 80 and spent time farming to have fun PVPing in WoW, then that's you. I'd rather just play a FPS.

 You obviously, did not do much PVP in WOW or not in a long time, a large part of WOW is PVP. You can actually devide WOW in to 2 games; PVE and PVP. The Arena is a major deal in WOW, actually the major problem (I think) WOW is having is balancing the classes for both PVP and PVE; trying to have each class bring a needed effect, unique to other classes in raids and yet not have it cause a major inbalance in PVP. I actually loved PVP and hated PVE in WOW, only did PVE to attain certain trinkets and maybe  weapons, so that i could start in the arena at least semy-well equiped. WOWs tornament is the Arena, where winners get from 15 to 35 thousand dollars, thats each player in each team, lol.

 There is no way you can play PVP in WOW, effectively with non-heroics,  only if your playing a very good range class, lets say a hunter, will you do OK with very good Epic raid gear, because PVP gear has resiliance, which makes a major difference in survival in PVP, and even with a lot of resiliance, you still have a tough time, so with gear that does not have resiliance, you can be killed extremely fast. Also you can get PVP gear when doing PVE,but arena PVP gear is by far the best.

I quit WOW, because my pasion was PVP,but it has become more and more gear and class based, rather  then skill. Skill only comes into play when your fighting 1v1 with gear score not  far apart from each, otherwise your DPS is going to royaly suck, compaired to higher gear,especially in melee, and also depends  if your class is capable of beating the class your going up against (its nearly impossible for a warrior to  beat a palidin with similar gear and especially with his CDs up, and even Blizz has recognized that a shaman could never beat a rogue), unless your going up against a total newbie or his or hers CDs are not up. So its based on circumstances, rather then just plain skill, but i don't think there is an MMO that truely has a fully ballanced pvp senario.

And the other reason i left is because I have explored everyplace in WOW and was also tired of the same old never ending grind.

What, it's better MMoRPGs be like the lame borefest WoW is? I'm not gunna bother explaining what's wrong with WoW, but that game is unplayable after a few months for people who have played better MMos and people who play longer than 1 hour a day.

 

How are these features technically and financially impossible to make? Most of them are non-complicated things which have been done in previous MMos. The most expensive would be the single player RPG quality quests/storyline, successful MMo companies have this kind of money. These features aren't niche, it's all about advertisement and popularity whether a game is successful or not. If WoW was a MMo like this it'd have as much, if not more subscribers than it has now, and the subscribers wouldn't just be new players coming in and out and people playing 2 days a week like the majority of WoW's subscriber base.

The reason why WoW has the subs it does is because the way the game is made. Its easy enough a kid could play but yet it still has things for  all the hardcore raiders.   Not to mention it can play on just about any computer.   Id have to think otherwise about WoW being even more popular if it had these ideas.

Forced grouping to do epic quests, and quests that take  hours to complete? That I totally would love in a game, but in WoW you only really need to group up for a dungeon run and I only go to level 50 but every run I did was easy and quick. To me WoW feels kinda like a bunch of mini games with quick dungeons, solofest style questing and instanced PvP. The exact opposite of what you and I want in a game. But 11 million seem to like it and thats cool, to each their own.

Grouping gets best XP, that I like too, Im still playing FFXI.  But do you think the WoW crowd likes that Idea? From what I gathered WoW players always like to progress their characters at a decent rate, thus the solofest. Compared to FFXI where if you get into a good party you can gain upwards of 9k EXP an hour. But you may be lucky to get 2k exp solo.

I could be wrong and maybe they may like these features they just don't know it yet.   The thing that really gets me is the time people spend on WoW compared to FFXI.   For WoW according to Xfire the average playtime comes down to just over 4 hours.  FFXI sensus the 78% play 1-3 hours and 11%  play 4-6 and 5% play 7-9 horus there is more but I would guess that its mostly just mules logged in to sell stuff.  

So the majority of people play almost the same amount of time that the WoW players do but yet we find time to group up all most for everything we do. Like just last night I think I played 3 hours and was in a party for like 2 hours and got 2 levels almost 3. It just proves a point that the WoW crowd probably doesn't like downtime and likes the ability to progress their characters the same rate all the time. Thats just a guess but if Im right there is nothing wrong with being that way. I can't expect everyone to be like me.

If I LFG in FFXI I either solo stuff while waiting do some other random things I can do solo without gaining EXP like quests and missions or I just tab out watch some anime untill I get a group invite. Which usually isn't all that long, when you make friends in a game and you have the ability to do multiple jobs on one character  and with level sync you should have no problem to find a party really quick. SE has made it so easy to group up even at lower levels, the dunes were packed the other day it was crazy. 

 I doubt  that the average hours stated for WOW players is correct. I used to play 5 to 16 hours daily. and beleive me I was not ahead of all y friends and at any time i would almost always find a guild member, even if i happend to wake up at 5 am. lol. theres even a site called wowdetox.com. Where WOW players tell their horror stories about their WOW addition. The leveling and gearing side of WOW compels you to keep playing and the competitive side as well.

Also at 80 raids can go on for hours, in some guilds i was in, we would do 7 hours or more sometimes.

I got tired of the grind after 2 80s and a few other lower lvl, plus the game has become all about the gear and not so much about skill anymore.

 I dont think a lot of ppl do raids because they like it, but in games like WOW, its the only way to get the best gear, so you have no choice, I hate dongeons and raids (except city raids against players), but had to do them often for the gear, for unique trinkets for pvp, which was what i liked most.

It might be an old idea,but not done yet, and still a lot of ppl would like it, because f2p sites are getting a lot of ppl now becuase they have a good variety of things for ppl to do. the only thing i think would be the  most costly is the super computeter that would be able to work all that without super lag. Imagine a few million ppl doing all the above, in one world lol.

To me an mmo now-a-days, should have a choice of dificulty on everything and it should also have a choice of either queueing in or traveling, becuase ppl get tired either way, wasting time traveling or bored and want to do more then just queue. but also have an ever growing world where one could venture in to.

Questing could be made more enjoyable by allowing a choice of dificulty, where you could get gear, that you would actually use. They should also have alternate  choices on regular quests  for each area, that way you could avoid exasperation from continuously doing the same exact quests over and over again on different characters.

I would not compare GW with WOW, WOW is at a much higher lvl of quality when it comes to freedom of movement and environment. GW is better then LotR but still like it, in the sense, like someone else discribed it, like an online theme park, lol

I don't play WOW any more, becuase i got to exasperated with the grinding, too much of it and also, i loved pvping and exploring, well i had explored all on both factions and pvping has become more gear dependent, then on skill and add to that more stunning and snaring in the BGs, made it too frostrating. I got mad and deleted everything, lol. I have, at times regreted it but then again, because it all had become a never ending grind, i am glad i did.

 Wow!, imagine that, someone using some skill to move away from an attack. lol. I would think that would be the point of it, but if this game is like WOW, then unless your fighting a warrior type, who has no real range, then it wont matter much because the range will get you, unless it would allow you to jump away from direct line of sight,  then it would add skill use to the game rather then just class or gear advantage only. That is the reason i left WOW, because in battlegrounds range rules too much and gear can give you also too much of an unfaire advantage.

 What? The bottons on that screen shot are exactly the same as a palidins in WOW, but the character and seen are not quite the same. Where the bottons just interjected? I have not played Guild Wars yet.

I would love to find a well balanced pvp game. I did WOW for 1 1/2 years. At first it was tremendous fun. Actually at lower lvls(below 80) it still can be, but at 80 theres now too much gear difference between a new 80 and well geared 80, a difference of 4k, so your going to endure lots of beatings before you can get to midiocre. lol

So please if you do find something on your own, let the rest of us know.

I also got tired of the grinding both for gold and for gear. I loved the Battlegrounds, but due to added snares and stuns, it has become too frostrating and also with the added gear at 80, makes it very dificult to do well unless your well geared. Another problem is off balance realms, it seems that most realms are overly dominated by the alliance, so you end up fighting against many, which means no joy. lol 

Hello, I need help finding a new game. I did WOW for a year and a half and i am tired of grinding. I like traveling, exploring and I would not mind Building if it doesnt consist of too much grinding. I want it to be an online game, as i love the social aspect of gaming. It also has to be a PC game. I used to love pvp, but it usually consist of a lot of grinding.

Most enter the internet for entertainment or to uptain information, one does not, and should not, have to have their attention on avoiding being hacked.

I hate hackers, as they are among the worst cowards. They can do tremendous damage to ppl, be totally hidden and not have to confront those they have hurt.

 Definition of a Hacker: Computer Slang.
" microcomputer user who attempts to gain unauthorized access to proprietary computer systems". So yes, if they are not actually getting control of a computer system, they are not technically hackers, but they are still criminals just the same. lol

There are tons of ways "hackers" attempt to gain access, so even though right now, you havnt been hacked, don't think your not at risk, they are coming out with easier and easier ways of getting control of either your computer or an account.

No one has any right to access anyones computer or an account without being authorized, no matter what, and no matter what dumb mistake a person has made. Stop making justifications for criminals, plain and simple, it is against the law!

And a reason why WOW gets a lot of "hackers" is because WOW and other game's gold are big business, for example CNN reported that there are lots of businesses in china, where all they do is farm ores in WOW to sell it in the AH and then sell the gold they make to players who play the game but  have no time to farm it themselfs. And since you can't make a lot of gold selling low lvl ores, its better to hack an account of someone who has at least one high lvl toon and even if they don't have mining as their professional, all you have to do is make them miners and go flat out farming and i am sure it doesn't take them long to get to 450 because thats all they are doing.

If you want to blame anyone, blame those who are buying gold from these companies, as they are the ones keeping these "hackers" in business.

I don't think Blizz ia attempting to have you pay for the hackers, I think your getting the data from a different department that is only concerned with getting the a valid card, But if they are aware and still want you to pay for them, then shame on Blizz, maybe thats another reason why they get so many hackers. lol

Wow. I relate to everything you said. And we enjoyed it too, until...suddenly we just didn't. My partner and I are now playing a couple of other games.

But OMG...when did they start allowing players to roll Horde and Alliance BOTH on the same PvP server??  WTF?  I must have missed that.  Myself, I never thought it right to even have Horde and Alliance both on one PvE server, much less PvP. I had all my Alliance toons on Lothar and all my Horde on Tanaris, and never the twain shall meet, imo.  For me, even as only an ocassional role player and particularly as an OFTEN times world PvP'er (loved loved loved city raids)...that just seemed wrong to have both on one server, whether PvE or PvP. PvE it's always been allowed by Blizzard though...at least as far as I remember, but PvP now too? Pfffft. What's the point of a PvP server then? There would never be a surprise attack. How utterly boring.

 No, you can only create alliance and horde on a PVE realm, not on a pvp realm.

Funny, but true.  Now i dont understand this upset about not being able to know everyone, you've got to be kidding, there are millions of players in WOW and at least thousands in a realm, not even if you didicated yourself to know everyone, would you be able to know all. Its the silliest MMO upset ive ever heard.I liked the ability to change realm or race, gives one more obtions to change his posibilities, especially in pvp, i think thats important. Anyway i gave up on WOW, as its all about the gear now and not so much about skill, as it used to be.

I was actually looking for an adventure only game and ran into this site, lol. I dont want to play grinding or lvling games no more, not only am i kinder over-run on them, but they are very addictive, due to their nature. Just went through that with WOW for over a year and a half. I want a game where i can just have fun, where i can escape to, on a super shoe string budget and not feel compeld or committed to having to play it consistantly, but only as i wish.

The game could have different play choices, which you can switch to at any time. There could be a choice where your avator can just explore, great fantastic places. There could be a choice where you can built on and have your army fight other players army, etc, etc. In this way you can vary your game play as you see fit and not be totally controlled by one specific game play.
