Ok so EVE has been "climbing" in subs so it went from 200k to what 250k maybe?  I am not saying EVE is a bad game, I am saying that in terms of successful MMOs EVE has less subs than a plethora of other themepark type MMOs.  WoW, LOTRO, RIFT, SWTOR, ESO, etc.  I am just saying that I think many more people enjoy themepark style MMOs than enter a world and create your own destiny type MMOs.

This is my opinion based off sub numbers of games, it's not fact.

Try near 500k.

PS:  Rift had fewer subs, LOTRO, TOR are free to play, and you don't know how many subs ESO has.

To answer the OP, probably.  Here is the problem with "sandbox" games, they get boring rather fast.  I know I will get flamed on here for saying this but it's true.  EVE great game, sandbox, never really took off, same with SWG.  A true sandbox game is more time consuming than even most raid centric games because people have to create things to do.  Bottom line is subconsciously human beings crave direction and clearly defined goals.

My honest opinion is that most gamers look back at sandbox games with rose tinted glasses just as they do with most "old school" MMOs.  I think the idea of a sandbox game is much more appealing than an actual sandbox game.

As far as the whole "We want the leveling process to take a long time!" attitude, I don't think most modern gamers can handle this.

And yet EVE, a subscription based game you state "never took off", is the only subscription based game that has continued to add subscribers year in and year out.

For a game that "never took off" that's pretty impressive.

And then there's UO, which is still running with a subscription.

But then I have to wonder how well most of the sandbox MMO's that have released would do if they weren't buggy, underdeveloped messes when they release.  Even EVE released in a horrible state, but then it also released as the only sci-fi space MMO in the market.

Rather than change the way I play the game, I expect Wildstar to  accommodate myself and my gaming habits.  They should have systems built into the game that makes it easier for smaller guilds to band together or be used in conjunction with larger guilds.  Hell, if guilds were going to be so important, they should at least have something similar to WoW's looking for guild.  Instead, they consolidated it all into one section of their forums and in game chat. They then make Pugging pointless so you will have less of a chance to meet people and join their guild that way.

If Carbine is unwilling to accommodate us, I am more than willing to take my money elsewhere and with it my guild.  I have already quit Wildstar as has most of my guild.  The few holdouts won't last long before they are gone too (as is evident by their posts on our guild forums venting constant frustration).

Join a guild.....psh.....GREAT RESPONSE!!!

So it's carbines fault that you have ridiculous requirements just to join your guild, which results in to few players to do content that you seem interested in doing, and instead of adjusting the stupid interview process so that you're actually able to get enough people into your guild you think that carbine should change the game to suit you.

And you think the OP is what's wrong with wildstar?

I think a lot of people would think that you are what's wrong with MMO's today. A self entitled attitude that demands developers should cater every game to your exacting specifications, even when the problem is your own unwillingness to adjust the way you bring new members into your guild.

Carbine didn't tell you to make people jump through hoops in order to join your guild, that's your fault.  As if you're offering something that no other group of players is able to offer. Seeing as you're unable to get enough members to do the raid content, you're clearly not able to offer more than other guilds.  You obviously need new members more than they need you, by your own admission.

If your guild was worth being a part of you wouldn't need to worry about members being poached; yet you had a problem retaining members in wildstar.

I understand though. It's easier to blame others than to accept fault.

Really wish they would localize the banks and create a real dynamic economy with a need for transporting good across the map.

If they would do that the game would become interesting.  This is obviously an opinion.

Wikipedia disagrees with your definition of open world.

AA is seamless and open world to a large degree (enough to meet the criteria for definition).

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_world

lol, its wikipedia, ANYONE can edit wikipedia.

To expand on my first post. I don't want to want to have each little area of the map (read: zones) separated by impassable mountains or walls that require exit or entrance to the zone through narrow pathways. This leads to silly zoned mentality where each zone is drastically different from the next as far as mobs/culture/eco-system/etc. My example of this is the WOW map.

This is not how things are in the real world, things flow together and lines get blurred, each state isn't surrounded by impassable mountains. I can go west until I hit the ocean, hop on a boat to asia, then continue west again. (I know...vidya games....but i play mmo's to immerse in a virtual world, and it's important to me.) To go back to my original example: in Asherons Call there wasn't areas, mob levels went up and down gradually but you could run for hours in a single direction only needing to change course for the occasional mountain that was too steep, or tree, or building or whatever.

Maybe I'm wrong, maybe the mountains aren't impassable, but I pulled up the world map and all I saw was a bunch of zones that appear to be separated by impassable terrain.

In other words,

The OP didn't play the game, he looked at the map and decided for himself how the game works.

Even when people have told him that it doesn't work know he's decided it works he still insists that it works how he decided.

Another poster has decided upon his own definition of open world.  Apparently even Darkfall isn't an open world because the mobs get stronger as you move away from the starting areas. Just like they do in UO. Just like they do in saga of ryzom, just like they do in damn near every MMO ever made.

Basically this is where we come to bash the game by imposing our own definition of open world.

Find a new hobby?

If you liked what you were playing 5+ years ago and don't now it's more you than the games.  The games haven't changed, you have.

SWG no longer exists, UO does.

Whats that say about 1999?

Plus the OP can still play the game, as well as everyone else that thinks SWG was the height of MMO's; yet they don't.  Very telling.

I don't like games on the iPad, but I'd play this on mine.

I think it'll be fun to go into opposing faction zones and kill NPC's.

oh wait.

Breaking down the yearly proxy statement in regards to SWToR,

From the Service and Other Revenue section:

Service and Other revenue was $1.059 billion with Star War: The Old Republic and Fifa 13 Ultimate team were the primary drivers with Battlefield preminium subscriptions also included. This was an increase of $331 million over 2012.

From the Net Revenue by Geography section:

This decrease was offset by a $367 million increase primarily from the

Mass Effect franchise, as well as Star Wars: The Old Republic and Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning

From Packaged goods and Other Revenue section:

Packaged Good Sales of SWToR are listed as down (yeah, ftp should have killed those).

From Digital Revenue section:

Digital Net Revenue before Deferral was $1,663 million, an increase of $436 million, or 36

percent, as compared to fiscal year 2012. This increase is due to (1) a $221 million or 51 percent increase in extra

content and free-to-play sales primarily driven by the FIFA and Bejeweled franchises, along with Star Wars: The

Old Republic

Net result:

If SWToR only made $165 million in 2013 then the FIFA subscriptions / dlc must be astronomical because Battlefield subscriptions are only listed as being 136 million.

Edit: The only place ToR is really shown down in is packaged sales and full download sales in the proxy report. All others it is shown to be up.

It's listed as down in digital revenue prior to deferral: These increases were partially offset by a $167 million or 39 percent decrease in subscription sales primarily driven by Battlefield 3 Premium subscription, Star Wars: The Old Republic and FIFA 13.

as well as under  services and other revenue: This increase was partially offset by an $86 million decrease primarily from lower revenue from The Sims Social, which shut down in June 2013, Star Wars: The Old Republic, as well as Pogo-branded online game services.

This is from the 2014 yearly financial report. http://files.shareholder.com/downloads/ERTS/3349323277x0x762357/F71D53F7-F900-49E2-86D8-093EADA6009B/Electronic_Arts_10K_Proxy_FY14.PDF

Why are you /facepalming when you're the one who posted an excerpt from the first quarter financials of 2014 as evidence of superdata info for 2013?

Why didn't you use the 2014 yearly report that stated ToR has made less money each year for the past 2 years?

Actually EA actually back up that statement by saying the game was profitable.  But people only discredit some sources when it doesn't support their bashing.

No they did not.  EA's own financial report stated that ToR has been seeing lower revenue each year for the past two years. They don't even sate that it's "profitable".  In every mention in the 2014 yearly financial report it is about its contributing to a loss over the previous year. It made less in 2012 than it did in 2011, and less in 2013 than it did in 2012.

The 2015 quarterly report states that its only a significant contributor in their F2P revenue, behind several other game services, for the first quarter of 2014.

Superdata is speculating, and they're going to speculate high. In the end they don't know anymore than anyone else does. It's a guess.

I don't hate ToR.  I just understand that when the report states it's a significant contributor it means that it's generating enough revenue to warrant mention but isn't the primary contributor.

EA states that they have 80m in subscription revenue, with BF4 premium being the primary contributor, and that several game services with ToR being a significant contributor make up 211m in revenue for their F2P services.

In order for ToR to be making EA 165m it would either need to be the primary revenue contributor in their F2P or subscription based revenue, their report says its neither.

[mod edit]

The 211 million is f2p and extra content. It doesn't really say what that means. At least not that I saw. It's also for 2-4 months of the year ? AND ... :) most of the numbers they're listing off are % of increase. If SWTOR went down that could be what they're " hiding" by that comment. It still could be a big portion of whatever the numbers are.

Or am I missing something still ?

You are correct.

According to the financial report for fiscal year 2014 ToR was one of the games that made less money, that same report also stated that ToR lost money in fiscal year 2013 over 2012.

EA doesn't break it down by game, it's by service, and they categorize ToR in two groups.  Services and extra content and subscription revenue.

To clarify, I have no issue with the game, I don't even really care about EA either. I just think its silly that people actually think that superdata  is somehow privy to information that not even the share holders are.

I wasn't accusing you of anything :) I find the numbers interesting regardless of the game.

But with a thing like superdata I'd rather see some actual evidence that shows they DON'T have that info. Like say...a lawsuit filed by a game company or a cease and desist order. I just don't think they'd be able to post those numbers like that without permission from the listed game companies.

Now...how accurate they are down to the dollar is anybodies guess. I see them more as a guildline for who's doing what and how much. It's the mmo version of measuring...umm..well.. male sex organs.

It's cool, I didn't read it like an accusation.

Super data can actually post whatever they like. Analysts are allowed to make whatever speculations they like; EA can't really do anything about it.  There are companies that make money doing this sort of thing for investors.

Course it doesn't. Superdata is all of 2013 and the pdf is 3 months of 2014.

If you can't do basic projection /trends, probably not a good idea to post and prove you cannot to other people. ROFL!

I see you changed the title of the thread. What did it originally say?  Something about how EA's report verifies superdatas numbers.

BTW, from the 2014 financial report:

These increases were partially offset by a $167 million or 39 percent decrease in subscription sales primarily driven by Battlefield 3 Premium subscription, Star Wars: The Old Republic and FIFA 13.

This increase was partially offset by an $86 million decrease primarily from lower revenue from The Sims Social, which shut down in June 2013, Star Wars: The Old Republic, as well as Pogo-branded online game services.

Interestingly, ToR also lost money the previous year according to the same financial report.

Feel free to take a look at ir.ea.com

EA is saying the opposite of superdata, and the OP didn't provide the full picture.

Of the 211m that quote is pointing out, ToR is a significant contributor, but not the primary. Those services listed are the primary contributors of their F2P revenue. ToR is listed last and as significant because more revenue was made by the other games listed. If ToR made 165m it would have been listed as leading their F2P revenue.  They can't list ToR as the primary contributor because that report has to follow guidelines set forth by the SEC, which means that it has to be truthful in regards to earnings, even if it's kept slightly vague.

BF4 premium is providing more subscription revenue than ToR, as stated in the report.

Geez we are going in on four years!!! Don't you think it's time for you to move on from a video game you don't like and don't play. Trying to spin the words into your favor shows the desperation most haters have these days towards Swtor.

OP,

I dont think people are saying that AA is not a Sandbox, but its more of a Sandpark than a Sandbox.  I got that feeling from the minute I stepped into the Beta.  The game right away felt as a game on Rails.  That bored me fast because I have played UO and SWG and I can be dropped in a random city in the game and learn my way.  I dont need the rails because I been there done that.  I think what the core problem is, is that the game is on rails until later into the game and you really dont get a chance to see it early.  Most players who enjoy sandboxes enjoyed Starting somewhere and not having a preset path.

This, 1000 times this.

Was very turned off by the linear questing start.

Been playing Darkfall instead now, way more what I had hoped ArcheAge would be.

So you're saying that you can't just go out to some area with level appropriate mobs and farm without doing quests in AA.

Thats all you're saying by mentioning darkfall, because the only difference is that AA allows you to do quests if you want, and DF is only now in the process of writing up quests (they even asked the players to submit their own to be added to the game) for people that don't want to just go out and kill with no purpose other than raising stats.

It's the world of Warcraft mentality.

Hes a crafter so that means he harvests all of the resources himself, turns those resources into materials himself, and then turns the materials into items himself.

He knows he has limited labor points, but instead of specializing in one area of crafting he decides to do it all himself.

Hes not happy being a miner and mining ore to sell, or being a weaponsmith and buying ore from miners. He insists he should be able to do it all.

The problem isn't labor points, it's player mentality.  When faced with a limited resource the player refused to adapt and instead insists its a faulty system because the limited resource prevents him from being self sufficient.

The same player will also disregard the market to a large extent because he's not really crafting to play the market, he'll craft to supply himself, and then complain that he doesn't have the LP to do everything else in the game like identify items or farm.

LP isn't designed specifically to slow down crafting or to force you into the cash shop, it's also designed to require the player to decide what he wants his character to be.

Every single person that has made this same tired complaint has said the exact same thing.  They can't mine, craft, farm, etc. without needing to buy LP pots.  Not one of them has said that it prevents you from specializing Ina field and then working with another player who specialized in something else.  Each one has complained they can't be self sufficient and do it all alone.

The OP is the problem, not the LP system.
