But then Sean made the comment that PC games have outsold console games for the past few years.

not completely true. Zenimax put all VR projects to the dead letter office and as I understand it Carmack tried to get them to work more on the projects but they didnt want to have anything to do with it.

That is complete speculation based on zero evidence and in fact is the exact opposite of what Facebook said. I dont mind people suggesting what they think but stating it as fact like you have seems odd

What you fail to understand despite it being fairly common knowedge for those that follow this technology is that 720p doesnt work that well in VR. It does work for very specific games but one has to be careful with the colors choosen etc. The universal agreement in the VR community is that 1080p is the ENTRY POINT for VR. Prefer higher. Now despite sonys investments its against the law of physics for the consoles to push beyond 1080p

This is what I mean.  

All of this shit is documented and Sean simply refuses the reality that the rest of us lives in.  

Zuckerberg made it very clear after buying oculus that he did so because he envisions Facebook moving into virtual environment.  Sean however is hyped about gaming so it obviously has to do with gaming, and never mind what the man with the money has said.  

Sean doesn't like console gaming, so obviously the rift will do better than a set made for a console that will end up in near 100m homes, and even though PC gaming is the SMALLEST market in gaming.  This is the same guy that stated in another thread that PC games have outsold console games the past few years.

UbiSoft gave a breakdown of WatchDogs initial 8M+ sales last month: 10-12% were for PC of which 70% were digital. OK 70% isn't 92% but in the right ball park.
 
What the numbers mean:
  • 3-3.5% of sales were PC retail box
  • 7-8.5% of sales were PC digital
  • 88-90% were non-PC.
Which is why you can be number 1 in the PC chart but not feature in the top 40 all format.
 
(vgchartz got the WatchDogs numbers "wrong" as well - I put wrong in quotes because its an estimate. A reminder that the numbers they produce are estimates. Same with the sales charts essentially as well - accurate as far as they go.)

But according to Sean PC games outsell console, not undersell compared to consoles by huge margins.

Anyways ESO is one of the very few MMOs where I found tons of UK people playing. At launch everyone in my guild turned out to be from the UK lol.

Trouble is a lot of the info people see is for ONLY boxes which is asine

I shouldn't have to tell you how wrong you are, but you are; incredibly wrong.  

The ONLY time a PC game sells more is when that game doesn't release on console.  

Let me guess?  You're going to claim that PC games sell so well that developers stopped producing boxes, and Microsoft abandoned their games for windows initiative.

So basically what I got from this thread is that nothing this guy did over the last 16 years matters because a bunch of people didn't like the way a video game ended.  

The attitudes expressed over an individual based on something as trivial as the ending of a video game makes many of you pretty crappy human beings.  

Who gives a shit about tolerance and forgiveness, right? 

So after 3-6 months how long would you want the reviewer to play than in order for them to write a review you agree with?  

And after playing the game and coming to your own opinion, why does it matter what a reviewer thinks?  Is it the need to feel validated by someone you think is a "professional" reviewer?  Is it necessary in order for your opinion to matter to you?

When server merges start getting mentioned this early on it's a very bad sign indeed.

I don't play the game, however I'm aware that they added a bunch of servers right after launch to alleviate queue times instead of making people wait until things died down before they were able to play. 

 

Except that all the guys who made your MMO's in 2001 are the same ones making them today.

What it competed with is irrelevant.  It was its impact on box sales for that month that was a big deal.  If it had more games on the pc to compete with then pc box sales in 11/11 would have been even bigger.  

A 57% increase in pc box sales is a huge deal when most people don't play pc games, and those that do tend to get them digitally.

Skyrim accounted for 50% of pc sales in the month it released.  

ESO is having major systems redesigned after a few months of release.

So you have a link for the 50% remark? We wouldn't want someone blindly throwing out inaccurate numbers now.  Also how about a list of games that also released on the PC that month.  

Pc box sales in November of 2011 jumped 57%, lead by skyrims 2.8 million copies sold.  Modern warfare 3 contributed to this, as it was released in the same month, but I'm unable to locate pc box sales for that game and the vast majority of the sales for it were on console.

ESO hasn't done anywhere close the number of sales that skyrim did, not even after 3 months.  If they had made the game more like skyrim, or any other ES game, we would be reading articles about how many copies they sold instead of articles about why other MMO's do a better job of capturing the spirit of ES games than ESO does.  

2.8 million in one month, just in boxes.  After 3 months major systems are being redeveloped in ESO.  That says something.

hmmm, well, I loved the game and played it for over 4.5 years.

However, they added all of these quests and the game kind of feels weird. Especially with the new starter zone. Also, I have a weird lag with the game which I am hoping will solve itself with better internet.

However, I still have it on my hard drive, and keep going back for bits.

I think I remember you from the official forums, back when I was playing as well. This has always been one of my favorite MMO's. 

i know exactly what you mean about the quests.  I tried it out a few months ago and just followed the quests, I was level 4x in no time and didn't have to worry about earning Adena for my gear, it was a strange thing. 

Are you using a G series mouse or something like that?  I was having an odd problem with lag as well and it turned out to be the poling rate (something like that, what ever determines the speed that the mouse sends info to the client); I had to turn it down to a really low number (something like 250) in order for the lag to stop. 

 

They made it a lot less of a hassle to level pets, which I was really happy about. 

Author should have started the article explaining that this list covers the process of crafting, not its usefulness in the game.  

Anyways...

EVE should have been in place of fallen earth.  

EQ2 should replace GW2.  

And the author could have benefited from some research, or at least more of it. 

Ryzom is by far a better system than Eq2, FF14, or GW2.  There's a lot of depth, but is easy to understand without getting bogged down in a lot of complexity for the sake of being complex. 

MO seems to have been included because everything is player made, yet the system itself is needlessly complex for the sake of being as realistic as possible.  You literally need to understand how something is actually made in the real world to understand what you need to make it in game.  Complexity and thousands of useless items isn't depth, and that's what MO crafting is based on. 

 

And the comments about FF14 being a ripoff or copy of EQ2 are hilarious.  They are nothing alike.  

FF14 and VG are more similar but still not the same.  Crafting classes in FF14 are fully realized classes like any combat class in other MMO's with their own skill sets, gear, and even quests.  EQ2 is literally hitting 1,2,or 3 when 1,2,or 3 appears on your screen; not even close to how FF14 works, and as far SYSTEMS go FF14 certainly worthy of a top 5 list.

Let me give you the ELI5 version:

  1. Game markets specific portions to a hardcore audience (raiding, PvP, etc)
  2. Hardcore audience arrives, complains that game is broken in several key areas
  3. Studio says that updates will take several months to arrive. Raiders might get benched for a tier. PvPers might drag their team down or reroll.
  4. Opinion: If you're going to call a game hardcore, you need to provide a solid foundation so that they can play hardcore. It's like asking for pro soccer teams to play in a stadium that's not finished, and with boots that don't fit properly.
The forum reference was specifically to accusations of a "broken, unplayable mess." The rest of it, a combination of direct play, discussions with other players, and other sources of information. I'm in WildStar almost every day, and write about what I see and experience, and conversations I have with others who play and used to play. I can only apologise that it isn't bland and uninspired enough for your particular tastes

Games been out two months, what game has balance down after even 5 years?  Balance is a myth, it doesn't really exist, and you don't actually cite an inability of raiders to progress in the game due to broken classes. 

Not one bit of what I wrote had a thing to do with the quality of your writing itself.  It's pretty shameful for you to resort, literally, to flaming on a forum over a bit of criticism.  

Ill leave you with a bit of artistic advice. Lashing out over criticism only shows insecurity over the work you do.

Ok so EVE has been "climbing" in subs so it went from 200k to what 250k maybe?  I am not saying EVE is a bad game, I am saying that in terms of successful MMOs EVE has less subs than a plethora of other themepark type MMOs.  WoW, LOTRO, RIFT, SWTOR, ESO, etc.  I am just saying that I think many more people enjoy themepark style MMOs than enter a world and create your own destiny type MMOs. 

 

This is my opinion based off sub numbers of games, it's not fact.

Try near 500k. 

PS:  Rift had fewer subs, LOTRO, TOR are free to play, and you don't know how many subs ESO has.

To answer the OP, probably.  Here is the problem with "sandbox" games, they get boring rather fast.  I know I will get flamed on here for saying this but it's true.  EVE great game, sandbox, never really took off, same with SWG.  A true sandbox game is more time consuming than even most raid centric games because people have to create things to do.  Bottom line is subconsciously human beings crave direction and clearly defined goals.

 

My honest opinion is that most gamers look back at sandbox games with rose tinted glasses just as they do with most "old school" MMOs.  I think the idea of a sandbox game is much more appealing than an actual sandbox game.

 

As far as the whole "We want the leveling process to take a long time!" attitude, I don't think most modern gamers can handle this. 

And yet EVE, a subscription based game you state "never took off", is the only subscription based game that has continued to add subscribers year in and year out. 

For a game that "never took off" that's pretty impressive. 

And then there's UO, which is still running with a subscription. 

But then I have to wonder how well most of the sandbox MMO's that have released would do if they weren't buggy, underdeveloped messes when they release.  Even EVE released in a horrible state, but then it also released as the only sci-fi space MMO in the market.
