I'm a a little worried after watching the "ArenaNet's MMO Manifesto " video.  they say in the video that you can see a village getting attacked you can save it and "it stays saved"  so say there is a dynamic event and i choose to save this village and  it "stays saved"  .  by that statement  I should  never see this village get attacked by the same enemies?  if that is the case it seems like the world will be heavily phased depending on my actions , and every player will have different phasings.  seems like this would make it really hard after a while since everyone will be seeing different things all through the world.  or when they say it "stays saved"  do they mean "stays saved until the next (same) dynamic event happens to that village and it resets"  ?

uhm i havent seen the manifesto in a year or so but im pretty sure that they say that when a village is atacked by centaurs and conquered it stays CONQUERED until someone saves them.  The idea is that wherever you are there or not, events happen and some of them need the interaction of humans to go on in the next chain of events. There is no phasing in the world of GW2.

You should check out some videos of the game, there clearly is not a single trace of phasing.

Exact words from the manifesto video “ in guild wars 2 it’s your story, it’s your world, you affect things around you in a very permanent way.  Cause and effect, a single decision made by a player cascades out in a chain of events.  Your meeting new people whom you will see again, your recuing a village that will then stay rescued who then remember you”.  Now please explain to me how that is possible without phasing?

If you want to see these exact words, they are 2:18 into the video till 2:36.

Ah yes, it stays rescued.....until they are atacked again. I agree the wording is weird but if you are basing your whole idea on a manifesto then its the same as people who get exited over CG trailers.

Go look at the videos online, look at how the game is. There is no phasing and the way the world works is that the villagers DO remember you and the village stays saved for SOME time, not forever. In fact if you fail to save them the next time the foes ocupy the area and a new DE event appears where you gota recapture the village.

ok, so what i have found is that although, your actions don't affect things in the gameworld "in a very permanent way"  (basically its just until the next dynamic event)  they are truthful in that wording since it seems that when you save a village, the people from that village will move into your home instance permanently.  your home instance will change each time you make a choice in game.  I am completely fine with this.

I really am just responding because I didn't want to come off sounding like a troll or that I wasn't excited about the game.  I will definitely be getting the game shortly after it releases.  I would probably pre purchase it but after being burned by swtor, i cant bring myself to preorder/pre purchase any game right now.

that stone in angmar has always been there, actually there are a few of those big statues that you have to finish a quest  before  you can get by them.  it's not gating you because you are level 18, just part of a quest.  if you haven't finished the quest it will insta kill level 75's too.  not sure about the river though, haven't tried it, but I have played lotro off and on for years, before and after it went ftp and I am pretty certain they didn't add any invisible walls at all, any invisible walls have always been there as far as i know.

the easiest solution to this is to give the option they had way back in daoc.  just an option to turn off xp gains.  you could turn off xp , do all your side quests, flashpoints, pvp, space combat, etc.  then turn it back on for story quests.  since there are only 2 pvp brackets it really doesn't give the problem of people staying at a certain level and twinking their chars.  personally I do a ton of pvp/flashpoints/space combat/etc.   but I don't feel bored doing my class quests (even ones that are grey to me).

daoc...so yah, none of the above

uthgard is great and boy does it bring back that "pve level grind"  phew...but you know what?  I loved every minute of it.  everything from the classic music, old leveling (grinding) areas, the constant spam in general chat to get groups together to get DF back, the rush to get into DF as soon as a realm took control to pve and pvp the stragglers from the other realms, etc etc.

definitely subbing, havent had this much fun in an mmo since my very first (DAOC)  I am playing through the content very slowly and enjoying all it has to offer.  I will be playing until GW2 comes out and likely continue playing even if I like GW2. Since GW2 is B2P I can play both :)

12gb here , plenty for me, never considered going for more...maybe in the future when I upgrade.

lol, i have been walking....yes WALKING quite a lot while playing SWTOR.  its kind of funny seeing everyone else run run run everywhere.  they look at me like I must be an NPC :)  don't think I have seen another soul walking in that game..guess what, there is a walk/run toggle :)  I feel like there is enough scenery to look at as i travel to warrent walking in this game and it adds to that "long travel time"  feel.

I feel just the opposite about the mob tagging system, I feel it encourages helping your fellow player.  in games i have played that didn't have tagging I would try to help someone kill a mob and get accused of leaching xp off of the player.  eventually I just quit helping them, on the other hand, i have never been yelled at about helping someone kill their mob that is tagged.

I get it that you don't get credit for the mob kill and don't get the xp, but you talked about the excitement of just killing all those pesky empire players and wanting to help your fellow people kill everything in the area that was empire related.  There is really nothing in this game stopping you from doing that and if everyone was doing that eventually those empire guys would be decimated and everyone would have their quest completed.  maybe it wouldn't be as efficient but you would have more of that huge battle feel.

don't get me wrong it would work as well without tagging but the battle would be shorter and you would likely get those players that get mad because you are kill stealing and leaching and overall your xp gain would be less at the end of the "battle".

While playing I ran into this scenario a lot.  We are all aware of the bonus missions of kill x mob y amount of times.  We all know that mobs come in groups, right.  As a trooper sometimes I wouldn't "tag" all three mobs, I may have started with suppression or something that is a single target attack.  So now I have one tagged mob, and 2 mobs untagged that are aggroed on me.  Along comes a jedi and AOEs my pack of mobs and tags the other two that I was about to engage, so now I'm out of luck of getting all three kills for my bonus because some guy came by to tag my mobs for free kills because I'm going to have to end up finishing them off.

Same goes if I see someone attacking.  If I want to help I feel like I should wait until he tags them all so I don't become that dick that just tagged two of the mobs that you wanted to kill to finish your bonus quest.

I do agree with some of this, it's nice to wait till a person tags all 3 mobs to help, but to really get that all out epic battle feel that the op said they were missing due to the tagging you should all just be running in attacking all the mobs together, if you have to stop and watch someone fight and make sure they get that one hit on each mob before you run in, it really loses that momentum.

Like I said above , it's certainly not the most efficent way to get quests done, but the OP said that he lost that epic feeling of a huge battle and running in checking each mob to see if its tagged and checking to make sure that noone is engaging another mob nearby that untagged mob really takes away from that epic battle feeling imo.

like i had said, if everyone was running in killing everything in sight then eventually you would be the one tagging two mobs from a persons group of mobs and you would get two, and assuming they are killing everything in sight, they would help you kill those two, etc etc.

the point i'm trying to make is that imo tagging doesn't take away from that epic battle feel if everyone is helping everyone else.  and i feel that tagging encourages helping others more than non tagging systems (with the exception of the warhammer pq system as was stated above)

I'm sure i'll get blasted for this but you might wanna check out vanguard.  it doesn't have the pvp but it has a really good pve game and the community (although small) is great.  Twiglyght song guild has 1300 members and usually has at least 20 people on at all times for raiding/dungeons.

the reason i make the suggestion is that the pve is a little more hardcore than some other games and a duo could have alot of fun exploring the huge seamless world.  i believe it also has pet collecting.  and it sounds like soe might be going to give it a little attention.

anyway just my 2 cents

having just started playing this game and enjoying it immensly, this is very exciting news :)

I am playing vanguard for the time being and absolutely love it.

well, i chose vanguard over rift.  Vanguard is just so massive and I absolutely love not having instances.  rift seems like one of the worst for loading screens too, seems like everytime you zone the loading screen takes forever compared to other games.  the only thing i miss will be the high population in rift.  I did get in a good guild and there are always lots of guildies on and lots of guild chatter.  I finally got all done on the island and started on the mainland and i must say, I don't think I have ever played an mmo where every few steps i take I have to stop and just look around like i do in vanguard.  finally, I downloaded the game off of steam and got it for $9.99 with a free month, so I got the game and a month of gameplay for less than the cost of one months sub, so that was definitely a bonus.

I'm pretty sure i made the right choice going with vanguard over rift.  thank you all for your replays and helping me make an informed decision :)

Ok, I have resisted posting anything here and trying to make an informed decision myself but i need a little help.

I have been looking for a good, fun, mmorpg for a casual player.  I really want an mmo with a good community.  a little background, my first and most loved mmorpg was DAOC, loved the pve, loved the pvp most, then i played lotro for a while (mainly because my guild from daoc ended up there) but I get bored of it after a few months everytime i go back, then i played WoW and enjoyed it up until the last expansion and the gear grind began to feel like work (definitely don't want any game i play to feel like work).  so since then i have tried just about every mmo out there that had a trial.  finally I have settled on either rift or vanguard..

Rift - I really like the pve combat and there are alot of people online but i don't feel the community like vanguard

vanguard - I am not as impressed with the pve combat (although it's not terrible) and i was surprised with the amount of people on the trial island.  I really want to explore the world in vanguard but i don't want to run around for hours and never see another person.  If I could just explore the mainland for a few days without having to buy the game and get to see what the population is like I would feel better about subbing.

Rift - I have heard that the endgame is just more of the same (gear grind)

vanguard - The community on the trial island was really helpful and friendly, and grouping for dungeons was actually fun and I love the open, non instanced world, but like i said:  not if it's devoid of other players (I know that since the vanguard world is so big, people are pretty spread out)

I know this is kinda disjointed rambling.  guess i'm hoping to get some insight from some people that have played both games.  is there enough players playing vanguard right now so that I'm not running around all the time alone?  does rift actually have an endgame that isn't just grind grind grind?   does vanguard have any endgame for that matter?

Anyone that can help me chose between these two games?

you can get it from here http://www.soe.com/getthegame/  I just started playing it a few weeks ago and must say i love the depth and challenge of the game.  as long as you realize the population is low but it is a great community there.

To bad it is in my opinion hamperd by a non-existing community, stiff as cardboard animations and a very dated graphics engine. This in cmobination makes world feel, again in my mind a lot less immersive. I feel like the lone survivior when i trudg around doing my tasks.

But if you can find a good guild and disregard the animations i am sure it can be a very good game.

I just started playing this game about a week ago after mmo hopping through just about every pay to play and free to play game out there (trying to find something to keep me occupied until GW2 or secret world come out) and i have had just the opposite feeling of this game.  now bear in mind i have not left the trial island yet , but every time I log on I do a quick /who just to see how many people are on and every time it has been between 20-30 (on the starter island)  I always see people running around, and i have been in 3 groups already and all of them good groups with friendly people.  every person i have seen talking in chat has been very nice and helpfull and mature.  as a matter of fact, so far this is one of the best communities of any game i have ever been in.  as far as animations and graphics, for the age of the game I think they are quite good.  I really feel they are are on par (or very close) to as good as most other pay to play mmo's out right now.

I just started playing last night, so i don't have an opinion on content (hoping the stories of years of content for a new player are true).  personally i have been mmo hopping lately since there is really nothing good out right now and am looking for a game to keep me interested until GW2 or secret world comes out.  So far this game seems cool and having no zones is a big plus.  I am still working on tweaking the setting so it will run smooth on my computer but overall i am pretty impressed with the graphics and gameplay.  The last game i played was everquest 2 and just began to realize that the combat sytem was really bland in that game (hoping vanguards is better).  as far as population.....obviously it's low, I am on the island, I did a /who and got about 22 players in levels ranging from 1-10 (ish) when I logged off last night around 11:30pm pst.  I actually saw 2-3 other players in the starting zone when I was playing (like i said though, this is just the very beginning, i am only level 5 right now)...I am gonna give this game my full attention for the next 14 days and if it grabs me I will likely sub.
