Really? So just to clarify, are you saying that AP will be akin to PvP, in that it will be available to everyone even if they do not own KoS (because that's what it sounds like you are trying to say)?
Somehow I doubt I'm reading that right, as it would eliminate the need for anyone to really purchase KoS until they reached the level it's content is geared toward (high-end).

Sorry to be so misleading on that issue. I just got confirmation from Blackguard that you do have to purchase KoS to be able to use the Achievement Point system. it is indeed one of the carrots they using to get more people to buy the xpac before they are of a high enough level to adventure there. The way it was put to me during the tour was anyone level 20 or above can use the AP system. The minor detail is that yes, you do have to buy the expansion.

Was hoping to get some more info on the AP system going in, was only really a teaser in your preview. Of course, you can only describe what you saw.
I'm just interested(worried) to know whether:

a) the expansion will be a must-buy at ANY level, because without the APs you will be at a serious loss in PvE and predominantly PvP (which is sounds like you will be).

b) will the APs buff characters to the point that content will be trivial to them, yet very hard to non AP people, meaning that content will need to be made really hard, thus impossible for the non APers?

b2) and if so, will the AP system get nerfed over time (as SoE has a history of doing with classes in EQ2) to bring it 'down' to a point where non APers can still compete?

Oh, and Mike, did you get any info on the PvP system while you were there too please mate?

Thanks again for the good insight, looks like there will be plenty of content (and bugs ::::35::) to contend with.

Thanks for your excellent comments and concerns. You are correct when you say I can only describe what I saw. Achievements were not implimented in the beta yet, we were given a few AP to mess around with. We wern't given much more information other than what I reported, Blackguard said more info would be found in interviews and articles in the upcoming days before release. I can address a couple of your concerns, but not all.

A> Concerning the expansion being a must buy in regards to Achievement Points, the answer is no! AP will be one of the few new things added that will be available to ALL players in EQ2, like the Guild Vault system was made available to all with DoF. B's> The new abilities that I saw were not really anything uber or content killing. They are kind of like the Master Strikes we get, they are strong yes, but not overly so. They enhance or add a different spell or abilty in a different direction. And tweaking and nerfing is pretty much to be expected. It's what the beta is all about, and once on the live servers we all know we see many 'unforseen' things occur that will have to be addressed.

Regarding PvP.... it's a totally different issue, different servers etc, for another article. I'm not much of a PvPer in mmorpg's. I did all my PvP in FPS games. I was big into the Quakes, Tribes, Unreals, etc. To me, THAT'S PvP, I haven't seen anything in any mmorpg to come close to that, and they really shouldn't. So I wouldn't be one to review the PvP.

I have been in there a little bit, and can share my introduction to EQ2 PvP with ya without breaking any nda's on it in one sentence. Got ganked at the beta buffer. With PvP it's all about who can find and utilize the exploits first and fastest. Even in the beta, testers(?) will exploit. I know, betas are there to find holes and exploits before live. But this was the buffer npc that you need to get buffed up past level 1 so you can actually test, and the issue won't even be in live, because there will be no buffer npc. Pretty funny, ganking level one testers.... well, you die and learn in PvP. We learned to get around that until SOE moved buffers to less accessable to enemy locations. Other than that, it's kill or be killed, as to be expected.

Glad you enjoyed the article, more information will be forthcoming, and the Review will have more specifics than the Preview.

It's not a complete waste of time if you just want to be a casual player, get in a few holes and chat a bit. I agree for powerleveling 4 people is always better. But powerleveling in any game always has a different rulebook if you will.

Everyone is entitled to their opinions, I stand by my comments, and I thank you for yours.

For the most part, yes. This is the North America server(s), the Koreans have their seperate server. I believe there are just the 2, Korea with 1, and everybody else on the other. There was an issue with Australia having to log in through a gaming website in Australia, but it still played on the NA server. And last I checked, the Aussies still spoke english........ mostly......::::31::

Hi, I'm the author of the review. Everybody will have their opinion, and my experience with the community was good, bad, indifferent, and lacking. The problem with any free to play games is you will have an influx of people in there running around, not knowing what to do, yelling how the game sucks, give me ng's and more. I can't count the number of rounds I've played where after a few bad shots someone gets mad and leaves before it affects his handicap, or starts hitting putts with a driver, the wrong way, etc. There are a lot of nice and helpful people in the game as well. I've had many pleasant rounds where the conversation was good, people got along, and the golf was almost secondary.

I would have given the community a little higher if the Shot Online Devs helped a little. The 'official' forums are a pretty sad sight, mostly people complaining of things, and nary any responses from Devs. Not to mention pretty hard to navigate, follow threads, or reply. The only community that exists is in game, and is limited to the people around you in whatever portion of the game your in at a particular moment.

It's a fun little game if you like golf sims as I said in the review. I played it a bit before being asked to do the review, and I'll play it occasionally now that it's done as well. 18 holes with 4 people does take awhile, but 9 holes with 1 or 2 others isn't a bad way to spend some time.

Well everyone who is on and playing, you are very lucky indeed. Count your blessings. Here's a link to EQ2 thread where 2 pages of people are still having problems, it was started at about 10:15 this morning.....

EQ2 Problems, still!

When I was able to play a bit this morning before the server went down again, it wasn't too bad. The spells that were once group buffs that turned into single target buffs, now last until cancelled, instead of on a timer. That's pretty much what I noticed once I went back thru my spellbook, found a bunch they added I didn't know I had, and there are a lot of trade offs. Lose some spells, but the ones you still have are more powerful, Can't buff stack on pets, but they seem to hold aggro better, nice since mages lost the parry ability. Once I get to play a little more, might get to like it. But the not being able to play part is the kicker.....

It is weird as someone else mentioned that things 7 levels below me that conned waaayyyy gray before are now green..... you get xp for em, so gotta killem again. And that brings back all those green aggro mobs I was finally past.......

What are you on dial up using a 486? Banners don't affect me at all lol and I like them. And 2 days sitting on your hands? The expansion has only been on for 24 hours at the time I'm typing this.

They are very distracting, 3 banners overshadows your couple lines of text, they detract from your valued words of wisdom......

And I'm counting days as, Monday I couldn't play, and today Tuesday as of almost 2 pm central time, still cant play.... so technically a day and a half, poke me with a dull blade for rounding up a bit....

And yes, I am on dialup (because nothing else is available)...... gonna flame me for that?

Well, I (and an insanely huge number of others) still cant log in to play. Our chars are lost in space due to the not being able to zone bug that has infected about 6 servers. You zone, it loses you, you exit and log back in, char cannot be found on server.... still! They say they are still sorting it out. oh well...
Anyway, being a conjurer of 27 levels, when I did log in the first time, I saw most of my high cost adept spells fer replaced with new app 1 spell substitutes. Never got a chance to try em out, zoned and am still lost. and cant be found. The one thing that irked me, was that a lot of spells that affected my group, are now single target only. I also noticed that many pet buffs won't stack anymore, and some of the spells that came automatically upon level before, are now in a list that you have to choose 1 of!
So far I am not liking my experience at all....... but of course I haven't been able to PLAY the freakin game for 2 days now......

that happened to me last night. Ran a full file scan...all better.

I ran a full file scan as well, didn't change a thing.
Finally got in this morning, zoned a couple times ok, got stuck the 3rd zone attempt, waitied it out, made breakfast, checked mail, took a little walk, came back and I had zoned finally! While I was marvelling at this, server went down.

Time to step away from the computer before it ruins this beautiful Ozark Mountain day......

Well, I wish I was able to play to tell you my experiences with the update. All I have been able to do since the update was log in, see most of my high priced spell updates get replaced with app 1 substitutes, pets get nerfed hard, broker not working, and more. Then i tried to zone to another area and the real fun begins. Can't zone. I get stuck in zoneland every time. You exit the game, log back in, now your character can't be found on the server. If you wait a random amount of time, it might find em later, but still can't zone. It happens again. Finally Tuesday evening they closed about 6 servers, my server Antonia Bayle among them. I went to bed at 1 am central time to that scenario. I wake up this morning, whoo hoo there is a patch downloading. Servers are up. Log in, select my character...... not found on server. SOE forums are full of people that are extremely angry, CS says they are still sorting it out.

So it's obvious that depending on what server your on, you have a totally different experience. Along with Antonia Bayle, I remember Permafrost, and about 4-5 other servers all having same problem.

I am one of those people who don't have a stable of alts to play on other servers either. I have a main, a low level alt on same server, and 1 really low level alt on The Bazaar. The Bazaar server seemed fine, (go figure, it's one of the Exchange servers) but my toon there is level 6 on the Isle. It's there just so I can see how the world evolves in that Exchange society, not something I want to continually play. So I'm basically sitting on my hands for 2 days so far, with the choice of play or start a low level toon on a different server, or do stuff around the house. I was hoping to try and relearn how to play my main character, reset all the toolbars cuz all the spells are whack, maybe make a few copper selling spell upgrades, etc. but can't login.

All hail SOE???? puhleeeeeese........::::26::

I think it's kinda cute the way that mobs that con gray to you will throw their hands up to cover their face (if they have hands) and shrink away from you in EQ2. It's like they know you could kick their ass and beg you not to.

It's mostly computing power that constricts a lot of things happening in the games. Single player non online games will have better and more technology in the game, because you have 1 person only to render, compute location, compute trajectory on weapon, consider weather, predict movement, etc etc etc. Look at when you think of something cool, like maybe having a chance of that orc knocking you down and taking your weapon from you. Whatever mathematical, probabilty and mechanizing code and calculations that have to made in real time for that to happen, multiply it by 1000 or so, because that's how many times that one thing can be happening at the same time. And thats just one thing. That same server has to be doing all it's other calculations as well, so you can see how the processor power gets eaten up quickly. And we all love that lag don't we? It comes from many places, not just bandwidth.

So time will get us those things, as computers get more powerful. If you showed Steve Jobs what we do now with computers back when he started Apple, even he probably wouldn't believe it.... hehe.....

Welcome to the Real World my friend. Ya better get used to it. Your Dad is doing it to you now, (your living in his house, he's responsible for you), your bosses will do it to you at work, (it's their equipment they can do whatever they want), your girlfriend and then wife will do it as well, (cuz they love you of course). If your doing something you want to hide from any of these aforementioned groups, you have a long tedious journey ahead of you. If your just viewing 'regular' porn, don't worry, everybody does. If your into pygmy bondage, or steppin out with other girls or something like that, well, good luck with that, don't bother tellin us how that worked out for ya.......

It was just a matter of time. I pretty much figured SOE would be next inline for it after Funcom got it going in AO. I do like Funcom's version, free to play and you have to see the ads. Paying customers can opt in or out. SOE should do the same, or at the very least, reduce the subscription price for people viewing ads. I know I will join the ranks of the displeased if I see Orcs in EQ2 runnin around with Nike sneakers and Coca Cola emblazoned shirts.....

How on earth do you play that many MMO's effectively? the monthly cost alone is prohibitive and I have a nice job. I play a few games that I juggle but no more then two MMO usually one.

He doesn't play them all 'effectively'. You can't. Even as a hyperactive kid. He does what many like him do, buy high level toons in games, then cries all over the forums about there being no high level content, and there is nothing to do in the game, how boring......

But whatever floats your boat, as long as it doesn't rock or sink mine...... and you can quote me on that. ::::03::

lol......... kids these days.......

I have NEVER maxxed out a toon in ANY mmorpg I've played, and I've played many in the last 7-10 years. Highest I ever got was to 70 or 80 somethin in AO, and that was when there were 150 levels I believe. The only reason I got that high was to be able to group with my buddies, plus I didn't like DJ'ing a show and being the only grey con in the room....lol..... not to mention being able to fly without a Yalm..... that was cool......hehe.....

The latest news from Walrus, an Admin on the mxo forums, is the system is still in internal testing, and we should have an announcement early next week on the Access Pass and other billing matters.

I think it will be real soon. The consolidation to 3 servers was the switchover to SOE hardware, and that seems to be pretty much straightened out from what I read in those same forums. Was a bit of a bumpy ride, glad I'm not subscribed yet. Waiting for the Access Pass to go live myself. I finally broke down and got Access. I had closed EQ and SWG accounts.... picked up a copy of EQ2 for under $25 when I heard mxo was going to SOE and Access. Picked up a cheap copy of mxo new on ebay, and just sitting on it till they turn it on. So I'll have EQ, EQ2, SWG, and mxo to choose from at any time. I could pick up a real cheap copy of Planetside to collect em all, but...... why?? hehe....I figure I'll play one for a few months till I get bored, move to another, rinse, repeat.

Even if ya dislike SOE, ya gotta admit they have enough major games to do something like the Access Pass, and make it work, and be worthwhile. (cept for that Jester of course).......
