You're misunderstanding the benefit.

It's not about it absolutely solving the problem. It doesn't. What it does do however, is make it infinitely more fun compared to two factions. With 3 factions, there are countless chances of jumping in on fights between two other factions. There are actual reasons for a certain factions eyes not being on you at one time or another.  In two factions like here, the target of the other faction is you. That's it. There's nothing else. They're breathing down the door waiting for *you* to step out, with no distractions.

It may sound like a small difference but the way it plays in game and more importantly, the way it makes the game feel is simply vastly different.

I certainly don't agree with blaming EA for this. I've read nothing but reports of them being pretty much hands off when it came WAR and letting them do their thing .

And how do you remember them laying off people right after they bought it? They bought it before the game was even out, and they even funded development for an entire extra year... while all the time Mythic (Barnett) was claiming the game was already done but they were just polishing it (The new WOW buzzword)

Also, this game was *never* intended as a 3-way war the same as Daoc, that was cleared up very early on. There were 3 conflicts, yes, but it was always clearly two sides. What *did* change significantly was what kind of game it was. The initial game design was very clearly focused on scenario's being the main form of play. This is why they just had empty fields with flags before the outcry, and only after that and the extension they made as a response to that outcry were forts even mentioned/and added. On top of that, after all the reduction of importance of scenario's they claimed they did, they still played a pivotal role when the game came out.

This game was built for scenario play. It made sense. It's the only way their balance would have worked, because scenario's limited population imbalance and thus meant  no additional control was necessary. Which is why they barely had any to begin with.

Sadly they just kept spamming 'War is everywhere' till the point that the populace was grimacing every time they read war was not everywhere and that those horrible Wow Battleground like things might be an important part in this supposed massive RVR game. They made a clear shift to ORvR at some point in development, and it's like they had to play catchup from that point on, because the game obviously couldn't handle mass RvR.

And the Psychic of the Year award goes to .... Cornerback, for this post back in August:

it's gonna be like:"We've got some great news for you. for WAR's 5th anniversary, we will shut down the game. have fun and enjoy spending the money you will save from now on"

Let's immortalize Fozee (The last of the Mo-derators) from the official forums here as well as it's quite in tune with the downfall of this game:

Fozee Quits:

You've been a great community and I've really loved spending the last 3 years moderating your posts. Thank you all for remaining loyal customers for far, far longer than any of you should have.  I will truly miss what we had. I wanted to say some hurtful things about WAR's management right here. The fact is, though, they've never so much as laid a finger on the forums and certainly have only lied to me. Hey, they lied to all of us. My only request is that they not be set in an undeserved positive light by the gaming media over the coming days. Note that Carrie may have posted a goodbye sticky on the forums, but I had her removed from the mod list months ago. She isn't part of the WAR project and should not be pretending that she is. I'll see you all in-game over the final few months, I just wanted to make a point of what happens when you cross your lead moderator with no backup plans.

According to this thread scenario's are almost dead on the EU server

@Keavan: When did you realize the Warhammer Online servers were still on?

Also, it could be misinterpretation on the newsletter side.

Yeah, it wouldn't be the first time I see false information in a news article so I'm certainly not taking it as absolute truth just from that.

Who said anything about Mythic/EA?

They have MMORPG license.
Creative Assembly has Strategy license.

2 whole different things(and yes, I am sure they are, because laws/deals/jurisdiction is written in such obnoxiously meticulous ways).

Not that they deserve license(EA), but still...

The newsarticle I just read seems to state this is exactly the license EA had, and that now just two companies have Licenses for Warhammer. THQ and Creative Assembly. I guess we'll see.

This game is way past its prime, EA killed it....

Probably a combination of EA and the developers. WAR wasn't a very good game to begin with.

Its has almost the same exact end game as DAOC ,

lol no kidding - absolute propaganda statement.  Daoc is nothing like War - hell WoW is closer to daoc in end game BGs lol.

you two are full of it , end game in WAR is similiar to DAOC . You flip realm lakes just like DAOC did until you push far enough to unlock a city instance or you can capture a relic . The only difference really is instead of towers like in DAOC you have objectives and supply camps. WOW has arena and bgs , nothing like DAOC or WAR for that matter. You can always tell when someone who played through level 10 comes along just to trash a game for the hell of it on this site.

What a load of crock. DaoC lakes were static. If you captured something there it stayed that way until someone took it back.

WAR is just a very elaborate version of Alterac Valley Scenario in World of Warcraft. You fight your way to the end, beat the end. Everything resets and you do it all over again like it never happened.

I still don't know why people quit in droves when the game was launched. It was the reason this game ultimately failed.

No it wasn't. If that was the reason, the game would have stayed around 300k, which is about where it was at the 3 month point, after the big exodus at release. Simple fact is, there's fundamental flaws with this game that kept driving people away, all it has done is lose more and more players with rare exceptions at patch points, and a rare occasion of seemingly stable population. No doubt the complete lack of realm population balance in the beginning was a big part of that, which they just completely neglected when they switched their Scenario based game to a somewhat open PVP game.

They just announced that having a WAR subscription will give you 50% exp in Wrath of Heroes. So they obviously have no plan of doing away with the sub any time soon.

It didn't exactly fail, they made their money on the initial box sales, like everything else this company puts out. MMOs aren't run by this company, they are just there to take sub fees while the CS remains largely for Pogo, their real online money maker.

In short,

the list of games and gaming companies destroyed and eaten by them is long indeed.

With the development of this game having been said by MJ to be somewhere short of a 100 million (more likely between 50 and 100 somewhere), I wouldn't be so sure they recouped their costs on initial box sales alone, in fact I'd say they probably didn't come close. But the subs will have recovered it over time yeah. That said, EA just bought them, no idea for how much.

EA killed this game.  It could have been really good, but ea took over mythic and made them push out the game so they could capitalize on the hype it was generating.  I mean cmon it didn't even launch with all of the classes in the game.

No they didn't. They extended and funded the development for a whole year beyond it's planned release before pushing it out the door. You can't blame EA that the game still wasn't finished despite that, it obviously wasn't helping Mythic finish the game considering in what state it still released in. And despite that, they'd been claiming the game was practically done for a whole *year* already. All they were supposedly doing was 'polishing' it. (the new hip word that World of Warcraft introduced)

I mean it brought alot of nice features to the MMORPG genre. Such as ability to viably level from level 1 to cap by doing just PvP,  PQ, defensive and offensive targetting, interesting mechanics like that of the BW and Disciple of Khaine.

Yet it recently announced merging of yet another round of servers to a total of two or three, globally, and probably will shut down completely before the end of the year.

But why is that? I for one spent 400+ hours playing it so it isn't that bad. Reason I left was because the end-game was/is junk, maybe that is it?

I had a HUGE amount of hype for Warhammer.

Somehow I feel that was the root cause somehow. I think Mythic really wanted to continue with the multifaction capitals and flesh the game out more before releasing it but I am pretty sure EA was on their back to make it more WoW like, i.e. only two factions, and release it ASAP so they can get their Return of Investment.

I am baffled why smaller MMORPG companies work with EA because they seem to ruin every MMORPG they get their hands on. For me it has noticeably been Ultima Online, WAR and now their latest screwup, SW:TOR. They should simply be forbidden from being part of MMORPG production, they are doing NO good. But they are making money so then is alright then, right?

The 2 faction decision was made looooong before EA came into the picture.

The community:  Back in the DAOC days...pvp was a game, it was fun, sure you want to win...but it was just a game and participating was the fun part.  Skip ahed to modern gamers and was very diffrent...losing cannot be tolerated.

You seem to be trying to blame the players here for not playing the game the right way, but in my opinion the game is at fault for simply rewarding the wrong stuff.

Sure, in Daoc everyone tended to go out and bash heads. But it also happened to be the best and only way to get your RP's, by killing people.

WAR, is still a progression based game, and the fastest progression simply came from doing the wrong things. You can't blame people for taking the fastest path, especially not a game based on competition.

I hope to see this ip again done the right way...not in EA's hands.I believe WAR had a release date before they announced the that the highlighted content would be cut and pasted in when it was ready....The game obviously wasnt ready but EA still forced this thing out 1 year before it was ready imo....

As for THQ's WAR 40k...well im skeptical but who knows...

The game had already been delayed and funded for a whole year extra beyond the original release date and from day 1 of the delay Mythic was saying the game was practically done, they just wanted to 'polish' it. Considering how it still ended up in the end, you can't really blame EA for shoving it out the door eventually. Who's to say how much longer it would've take them to do it right.

I was in Alpha, Beta, and left before launch as I saw it's inevitable demise. Here are the following reasons why Warhammer "failed".
-Mythic was given the IP by GamesWorkshop after realizing how DAOC was very similar to the Warhammer IP, and how LOVED DAOC was. HOWEVER, GamesWorkshop later told Mythic (2yrs into development) that they COULD NOT do a 3-realm RVR system, and that the "Lore Limitations" would force Mythic to do odd factional splits. HOWEVER, I've been told by thousands of fans now that, in fact, GamesWorkshop was full of crap and only wanted to feed off of WoW's success not realizing that Warhammer =/= WoW. A 3-Realm system WOULD have worked, but GamesWorkshop dropped the ball ON TOP OF MYTHIC'S FACE.
-EA acquired Mythic about a year or two into development, and subsequently forced Mythic, with GamesWorkshop's support, to go a more "traditional" WoW-clone gameplay type with HEAVY linear questing. Additionally, the "attachment" of EA onto Mythic's work caused a LOT of people to simply cancel their pre-orders because of the HUGE stigma revolving around EA's titles.
-6months from launch EA started funneling funds AWAY from Mythic's Warhammer development for an "unknown" title at the time. This left Mythic, in a CRUCIAL time in development & deployment, with fewer resources than they needed resulting in a VERY buggy launch. NOT TO MENTION that EA FORCED a "release date" on Mythic's developers for Warhammer Online. The end result was a highly buggy almost content-less product that people flocked away from in DROVES post-FreeMonth.
All in all, Mythic was completely destroyed by their accepting the Warhammer IP. GamesWorkshop ended up manhandling them at their two-year development mark, and THEN with the acquisition of Mythic under EA's banner it only got worse. Today, Mythic is a "shadow" of its former self with more than 70% of it's development team having been cannibalized for SWTOR, or they simply quit due to the environment they were thrust into. Sadly, we will NEVER see a DAOC II as EA would most assuredly screw that up completely.
Hope this helped,

Far too much blaming EA in this in my opinion.

Some things to remember:

* Without EA Mythic would've ran out of money before finishing the game

* After EA took over, they allowed and funded the extension of the game's release date by a *full year*  (While Mythic at the start of the year was already continuously stating the game was 'pretty much done' and that the extension was to really polish it well. 'Polish' being the favorite keyword back then due to the WoW)

*Before EA took over the game and at least a while after that, the game was all about scenario's, not Open RvR. The design before and after release just screams it, not to mention that despite their 'reduction of the importance of scenario's' they still played a massive role on zone control. ORVR did not become a focus for WAR till the beta cry-out, when it became apparent that taking flags and having standoffs at warcamps wasn't quite that interesting when that's all there is.

Imo that lastpart is where it seriously went wrong. The beta was closed down and after it came back the focus has suddenly changed to ORvR and that was when finally the first mention ever came of actually having forts in the game ( the last year)

And they had to, because that's what everyone wanted and everyone expected. And why was that? Because they had made zero, zip, nada effort to reduce hype surrounding it that was touting it as the best RvR game to be for decades. Instead they went with it, and by the time it was getting to completion the hype was so strong that the game they had simply didn't fullfill that want at all.

Do I think the original design with high focus on scenario's would have been a WoW-killer or even a great game? Probably not. It would not have been what people wanted and it would have lost a lot of people based on that. However! I would have been a far better game, by design, than the game they ended up with. Because the scenario version had built in population control (max per scenario), while the ORvR version simply got crippled by it.  Nothing's dumber than a two sided Tug--O-War design with no strength control between the two opponents.

Oh wait thats not how reality works. which company out of those 2 released 4 $15 map packs for there last game? it wasnt EA, thats for sure.

Lol, but if you could eat anywhere, and eat anything for the same price, then the one who sells the most would be 'the best' to a far greater extent, which, would you know it, the MMO world is like.

WAR is just as accessible and expensive as WoW, yet people vastly prefer WoW.  (probably because it actually got development, rather than ... nothing in WAR's case. Probably the worst case of return for sub fee ever)

They're merging down to 1 US server and 2 EU (1 German) servers now so the pop thing being fine was obviously hogwash.

For the US one is semi-balanced and the otheris Order heavy, so it'll probably be order heavy from now on.

Studies on Masochism need to find their subjects somewhere these days. More power to them :)
