[General Article] The Secret World: The Story So Far
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 12/14/12 11:34:41 AM
Great game, and here's hoping the B2P change helps more gamers find out how much fun this title is. BTW, if you haven't bought TSW yet but are now considering it, you should be able to pick it up on Amazon for $15, starting tomorrow (according to an Amazon rep over at Cheap Ass Gamer).

Marvel Heroes: Beta Begins this October; New Trailer Available

I don't think it looks *too* bad, but from what I see so far, it's just a grown-up version of Super Hero Squad, which is cute and great for kids. This makes the loss of City of Heroes even more sad. |

Really enjoying the game so far. Some wacky UI issues, but I'm sure they'll slowly get worked out. They also provide all the UI Flash files for community development, which means we'll probably see some great mods in the future. |

The Secret World: Review In Progress - Part One

Regarding respecs: Even points that were supposedly "wasted", were spent on passive abilities that can still provide synergy with other new choices. My example: I started out with Blades + Elementalism as my two areas, really more for theme than anything else. I've been pretty effective, but these two sets don't work as well together as Blades + Blood, for example. So now I'm going to start spending AP in Blood Magic, but I certainly haven't wasted any time or points on what I've done so far. And there are some useful Elementalism passives that I'll continue to get mileage out of for the forseeable future. The idea that missing a respec is a problem with TSW tells me folks are still thinking in a traditional MMO mindset. ...But TSW isn't a traditional MMO. |

The Secret World: Five Surprising Things About The Secret World
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 7/05/12 1:54:38 PM
So far, I'm really enjoying it. There are some "quality of life" improvements really needed in the chat and teaming UI, but the quests are fun, graphics are great, and the music+sound really builds atmosphere. It's definitely worth a look, in my opinion. |

The Secret World: Wondrous or Worrisome?
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 2/27/12 8:19:25 PM
City of Heroes is a perfect example of what you call a "Dress to Impress" game... and we've been paying cold hard cash for extra costume pieces for seven years now, and it's worked just fine. It's not a "no-go" at all. So skip the game -- totally your choice. Not all of us are wringing our hands over a micro-transaction shop, and I'm looking forward to giving TSW a chance. :) |

General: Five TV Shows That Should Be MMOs

With the recent demise of LEGO Universe, I think a Muppet MMO for kids (and nostalgic adults) is not a bad idea at all. The muppet style would lend itself to a fun character creator, and there's lots of great stories to build adventures around. |

I'm still trying to figure out how this game will actually play. Is it going to end up like a grown-up version of Super Hero Squad, with a world jam-packed with multiple Wolverines and Iron Men? |

They've stated that they're planning on voice-acting all their mission givers, which is a tall order, but adds another nice touch to the game. It was a surprise to hear Tim Russ (Tuvok from ST: Voyager) in the demo. |

City of Heroes: Celebrating Seven Years in Style
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 1/17/11 11:44:21 PM
Players definitely get burned out on games for all kinds of reasons, and obviously CoX had lost its luster for you. But I hope not for the reasons you've listed in your post, since most of them are exaggerations, or simply not true at all.
Maybe you're confusing idiots standing around in Atlas Park broadcasting to join AE farms with them actually occurring. They do happen, true, but it's not the endemic problem it's been in the past. And the best part about Mission Architect? You can totally ignore it if it's not your cup of tea. So no real effect on you here.
Not true, unless maybe you play on some of the less-populated servers. Lowbie sewer teams are running all the time across Freedom, Virtue, and Justice. Not sure what "other group activities" you're referring to... maybe costume contests? Still going on under the globe.
Mystic Fortune and Secondary Mutation are buffs, but they hardly throw off the balance of the game. They're useful, but minor, and certainly don't put you at a PvE disadvantage if you don't have them. And Mystic Fortune can only be given to other players, so even if you purchased the Magic Booster, your hero or villain gains nothing from it. And there's nothing in any of the Booster packs that lets you "fully utilize the Tailor in game". There are costume pieces, just like those you can earn from events in-game. Some you'll like, some you'll never use. With or without them, they have zero effect on the Tailor or your ability to make costumes, other than access to those specific pieces.
"Optimized" for what, exactly? The CoX engine definitely shows its age at times, especially when you have large number of players in one localized spot, no question about it. But Going Rogue was an improvement in my eyes, and lots of others.
This is just silly. A huge content dump, new zones, new costumes. I would imagine that if you were around in 2005 when City of Villains was released, you would have expected that to be free as well? Developers don't work for free, and new content doesn't grow on trees.
Completely untrue. Demon Summoning, Dual Pistols, Electric Control, and Kinetic Melee were released with Going Rogue... in August.
Sorry that you didn't like the game -- not everyone enjoys every game out there. But there's still a lot of great stuff going on every day in CoX; a game can't last for seven years if there aren't players playing it. Maybe consider coming back after Issue 20 later this spring, as the recent Incarnate additions should continue to bolster the endgame (which, for me, has been CoX's blind spot for a long time).
CoX and DCUO are totally different games, based on a similar genre. After playing through all of DCUO's Closed and Open Beta, I found there were some very cool things, and some not so hot (like all games, I imagine). It's always good to have competition, but DCUO isn't going to bury CoX by any means. My bet is that they'll co-exist (along with Champions), with each game gathering its own fanbase. |

DC Universe Online: The End is the Beginning
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 1/07/11 1:04:12 AM
If and when DCUO switches over to Free-to-Play, I might give it another look, but it's just not worth $15/month to me. After playing through Closed and Open Beta, there's definitely some great art direction going on, but lackluster costume creation and powerset organization, not to mention a PS3-focused control scheme that, for me, doesn't translate to the PC, are enough for me to take a "wait and see" approach. I'm looking forward to reading the insights of those jumping in on Day One. |

Have they finally added the ridiculously-common "Invert Mouse" option yet? Without it, Beta has been a pretty but frustrating endeavor. |
