[mod edit] Invisible walls in a MMORPG released in 2013 is just unacceptable and is one of the reasons I'm not trying this game.  World of Warcraft, a game released so many years ago gives the illusion of a free world so I see no reason a game wtih access to newer technology 10 years later can't.
What is shown so far isn't a finished product but the ideas are good. Lack of information allows us to fill the voids with what we find to be a good solution... that is a great marketing tactic.

Your argument is invalid since AI can be situational and divided into seperate action groups. Combat AI can be completely different from behavioural and/or enviromental. Your speculating that everything SOE mentioned about AI implies purely to combat.

As much as I'd love for SOE to deliver everything their selling I'm pretty sure I have a better chance of pulling a rainbow flavoured gnome out of my ass.

you're right, the character style isn't an issue to be solved.  many EQ players hating it is the issue.  Most MMO companies - SOE among them - would rather make adjustments to their games than lose their most loyal customers.

Many of the successful MMOs - especially those that have lasted for many years - have had major graphics and character model revamps over the years, both in terms of style and in terms of quality.   For example, EQ2 added a whole secondary set of humanoid models based on customer feedback on the original humanoid models.

Yes model revamps happen but usually due to outdated graphics not because of complaints from customers. Customers love to complain but praise much less meaning for example for each complaint you have 100 silent customers who like the style.

EQN doesn't have some outdated graphics it has gorgeous atmospheres and extremely detailed and smoothly animated characters. Personally I love the look of the human characters it's just the lion that is creating all this attention because it's just to childish looking, in a bad way. My guess is they will fix the lion sticking with current art style because it's got a great fantasy vibe.

Even if you heal a player and the NPC attacks you then your option is to heal yourself until the NPC get's the attention of someone else, which it should do since it's a smart NPC.

Why should it do that? Why would a smart NPC not continue to eliminate the healer first?

I'd say that a smart NPC would ignore the attempts to gain it's attention from someone else until the healer is down.

In such a system, the healer is the tank.

Because after a few seconds of trying and noticing the healers health keeps coming back while his is going down the smart choice is to move on? That's besides the point it's just an example we can have a full debate on what the right choice is depending on tons of different factors. The point is no matter how smart NPC's are healing is always important and so is control which only leaves tanking behind.

Moving on to pound on someone else will have the same effect, the healer will then heal that one instead.

Healing is only important in the trinity system. If they want the trinity system to be optional, they will have to make healing (and perhaps also controlling) less important. If not, then characters with healing or controlling abilities will be required (by the other team members) for team play.

I am curious what they are planning for EQN.

I am also very curious on their solution for EQN because I recall reading somewhere from SOE that if you like healing you can still heal and then followed by that the trinity is not required.

According to SOE thanks to Storybricks the AI will make NPC's smarter in turn making the trinity not effective. Shouldn't this same logic be applied to players? It's smart to have a tank who has more HP take direct damage. If the game is truely free then players should have various tools at their disposal to manipulate trinity gameplay because it's the smart choice.

Let's take the tank out of the equation you are still left with a healer. In fights players take damage which means a healer should always be a good choice. Even if you heal a player and the NPC attacks you then your option is to heal yourself until the NPC get's the attention of someone else, which it should do since it's a smart NPC.

Let's skip to control. Stuns are always good since a NPC doing nothing and taking damage is effective. If there are more NPC's then taking some out of play seems to be a smart choice... the logical choice.

If the skills are available then the trinity might not be REQUIRED but it should still prove to be more effective. This is pure speculation as so far we have not seen this great new AI. The main point here is just because NPC's are smart and act on logic does not mean that players need to be considered stupid and not follow the same rules.

I didn't consider and agree with the comments here regarding the realism factor. This makes alot of sense for melee type skills but not so much for magic. I guess it would be too much work and unfair for melee and magic to have different rules.

I like to think of magic users tied to weapons in two different lights:

1. Magic users channel the magic through the staff implement differently than how they channel magic through a dagger implement.

e.g.

A skill that makes me sacrifice life to do damage may use a ritual dagger to draw my own blood for the spell.

2. The spellcaster binds spells to the weapon much like in D&D.

e.g.

I find a Searing Staff that has some fire skills. Those fire skills were bound to the staff by the spellcaster that I killed to get the staff. My character does not actually know the spells, but he/she can utilize the power that is bound to the staff to cast the spells.

Binding spells to weapons would be a good solution.

Has this been officially confirmed? It seems SOE is promoting "freedom to play your way" yet force you to use specific weapons for skills? I don't mind 8 skills but being forced to use a certain weapon is what broke GW2 for me, that and the lack of trinity and the zerg fest that followed.

Would be nice if there is a way around this. I enjoy playing a necromancer with a staff and don't like the idea of being forced to use a dagger just to get the "best" spells. Anyone else feel this way or is it just me?

Maybe it's just me but your logic is flawed so i stopped reading. You lost me at LOTRO's realistic graphics... Did we play the same game? Maybe you played some moody adult version that I havn't heard of?

People need to take a closer look and realize that art style graphics does not equal low quality graphics. Did we not see the same tech demo? The characters in EQN are extremely detail oriented/high polygon count with extremely smooth animations.

Personally I prefer the fantasy look over the realistic graphics since it gives the world more emotion. ESO might be fun and I wish them well but it's not a seamless world and the animations are far from smooth.

Sure EQN has styled graphics but don't forget the details and smooth animations. This will mostly likely mean responsive gameplay like WOW. Have you watched ESO gameplay? The graphics are choppy and the animation is far from smooth.

Also just because the art style might look similiar doesn't mean the graphics quality is the same. GW2 has great graphics but EQN takes it even further creating unique emotional atmospheres.

Don't get me wrong ESO might be a great game but if your comparing graphics don't stop just at the art direction. Also ESO isn't a seamless world, that's like comparing a pool to an ocean.

  1. The reason for creating a MMORPG is profit and not kittens and rainbows.
  2. SOE presented a flashy tech demo with no real AI. No where was it mentioned that the NPC's will stand still and all be killed with one hit.
  3. Lack of actual confirmed facts is making people jump to their own conclusions. A pointless cycle.

The lion is the only thing the bugged me as that totally looked like the cheetos mascot guy or a bit lion king.... the human female looked great. I wasn't expecting this much stylized graphics, but I do think it will be good for years to come.

Yes I agreee the features of the lion were a bit much, I think the reason behind that was the ability for facial expression. Hope the rest of the models follow the human female look.

During the discussion regarding the round table I recall hearing something along the lines of recieving player feedback over the next 6 months? After hearing that, it's the last part of the reveal, I was under the impression that the estimated time window is 6 months from now.

I don't like the art style but then again it's not a problem for me. What really concerns me is action combat and such. For me personally GW2 with it's casualness and action combat is an example of an MMO I don't like.

I liked the idea of Guild Wars 2 but the actual game didn't do it for me, quit after 2 weeks. The worst part was was no trinity which basically means a no structure free for all.

? There has been next to no combat shown, did you even bother to read the articles before posting? That's a big no. The combat was shown to DEMO THE DESTRUCTABLE ENVIRINMENT, read before posting

Totally true, I was only refering to Guild Wars 2 combat.

WOW was the only one with this cartoony graphic that have a big success ,but this is an old game ,new AAA mmos should look more real

List a financially succesful MMORPG with realistic graphics, smooth animation and reactive gameplay.

TSW, LoTRo, AoC. :)

Is it me or was LOTR not realistic looking? Slightly styled? AoC don't think it counts as a successful game or does it? TSW has realistic graphics? I though they were horror/gothic styled?
