IGN are really a very untrustworthy review site, they need money from advertising and companies that want a good review simply push money at them before to color their opinions, they didn't even offer seperate reviews of both systems.  You are even starting to see the companies offering money to youtube reviewers these days to make promos to do the same.  Angry joe etc.

End of the day reviews have been proven to be untrustworthy anyway, tor and gw2 proved this.

You obviously like the game, many do not.  There is something to the dislike to the game because if this was a genuinly good game we would all be still playing it and wanting it to be successful to play it for a long time.  As it is we don't and it won't.

You're fighting a losing war, as more time passes more people will start getting bored and turn on the game.

I've asked myself that same question :)

The handful of people on this forum that seem to hate every game that comes out and then proceed to make dire predictions about it's early demise are not going to affect any MMO if it's done well - and FF ARR is done VERY well.

The people on this forum are mostly bitter...jaded vets who feel they've been burned over and over again by AAA MMO games and it shows with the amount of negative posts. No MMO will EVER satisfy this crowd IMO.

MMO crafting has always been a meaningless money sink until the very last skill points were gained. I hate that.

I also hate that crafters in many of the popular MMOs are expected to participate in high end raids to earn high end recipes and materials. I'd rather go on an epic, time consuming quest for a specific rare material component. But to require that I gather a large group of other players together to kill monsters for hours at a time for a chance that the material will drop randomly and another chance that I'll roll appropriately high enough to win said material... that simply kills my desire to craft.

In ESO I'm really hoping that A) we can use the things we craft even at low skill levels, and B) we're not required to raid to craft the best items in the game.

But...don't you do that with raiding? You spend 4-6 hours in a raid for hopes that some special drop happens - and at the same time we crafters have to deal with the elitism of the raiding community. I refuse to go on raids for crafting recipes for that reason alone.

IGN and "Real" review. That made me giggle...

Sorry, hard to take them ever seriously, considering they are far from giving good reviews.

You may giggle but the IGN review was a helluva lot more fair and accurate than the crap being opined on this forum.

IGN reviews - lulz

http://www.ign.com/games/star-wars-the-old-republic/pc-816935

9/10

IMO SWTOR was 7/10 for the first month, after that 6/10

FFARR is a much better game (initially) and is a better game after a month, but suffers from lack of content and a very small world.

When I started FFARR itr felt like 8.5/10, after I hit 50 feels like 7/10

Hehe...yeah..that review may have been skewed by the reviewers nerd-love for Star Wars. What REALLY hurt SWTOR more than anything was utter lack of content added in subsequent patches and a failure to fix some glaring technical problems along with a rather boring game world...bad crafting system...etc etc.

FF ARR will go the same way if SE doesn't come through with it's planned patch in November with Housing....etc:

http://zantetsuken.net/news/final-fantasy-xivs-patch-future-2-1-2-2-and-beyond

Everyone agree about how bad EA and BW handled SWTOR after launch, till the server merge and the anouncement of content updates every 45-60 days, now the game is actually good, and probably with a few more updates, like the space pvp xpac or dlc, the game will be close to be that SWTOR mmo that everyone was waiting. My point is, MMOs need time but FF need and update pretty fast or they gonna lose an isane amount of players after the free month.

This!

But seriously. Let's be honest. Final Fantasy had good sales as no other high-budget MMOs have come out recently. It has a niche market, and you will see people leaving the game fairly fast.

And to be honest, FF is not a tripleA game. It has no staying power, and is largely unvoiced. I give it a 7/10 tops. It is incomplete, and lacks what other games consider vital.

On the other hand, I've been playing SWTOR for more than a year now, and I cannot shake it. I will NOT sub to this low-budget FF game, and I demand quality for me to justify spending money.

While I do agree that putting things behind a paywall, even for subscribers is a bit harsh, a lot has to be said for the story, and immersiveness of SWTOR.

Some people might like FF: ARR, but I certainly do not.

Let me provide some facts:

1)It has slow, and dumbed-down combat at-least for the first 20-30 levels(Even worse than Rift).

2)The quests are insignificant, click here, do this type of thing.

3)Quests are largely unvoiced, and when it is they have not even bothered with lip syncing.

4)Lack of PVP(I know FF has not had PVP historically, but this is supposed to be a big title.)

5)Generally the game feels incomplete, small and uninspiring.

They are riding a IP wave, and the game will die down once every bodies 1 month free pass runs out.

If this is a re-release, I cannot begin to think how awful the original was.

Wow...do we differ in opinion on SWTOR - I find that game to be terrible in comparison to FF ARR and I'm a really big Star Wars fan...so it was doubly tough for me. I think you're wrong about the 1 month die down...I think the game will continue to grow and get better and has the best "potential" of any MMO I've played in years.

Now...this potential could be squandered if SE fails to come up with a very good, meaningful 1st patch come November/December - and I'll have plenty enough to keep me busy until then. Time will indeed tell.

http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/09/11/final-fantasy-xiv-a-realm-reborn-review

Judging by the words you use you are not posting the link as a way to voice your opinion about the IGN review, but to take a stab at another reviewer who doesn't agree with you. In true angry nerd form you make yourself look like a fool of a fanboy who is out for blood rather than to understand how the human psyche works and the fact that no two people using the same product will ever agree on anything, ever. I read the IGN review and found it to be written by someone who mostly leveled through FATE parties and took part in very little else for a decent amount of time. Hardly enough time to warrant a thorough review and the score it received. IGN is known for this, however, and it won't be the last time they rush through an MMO while reviewing 50 other games(IGN staff did get slashed recently) in order to just get an arbitrary number out that people like you can use as ammo against others.

I have no problem with people not liking the game for their own personal preferences but I DO have a problem with those who trash the game by misrepresenting features (like crafting sucks..items aren't as good as drops and such nonsense)

Members of this forum routinely trash games because they don't conform to THEIR standards so I'm offering a positive counterpoint to those. Also - I find many of the members arrogant and very condescending and yes...bitter and jaded.

Note: (Seeing as I can't post this in the official forums because of the retarded restrictions I'll post it here).

Grind gear in dungeons... I know this is a stable of the MMO genre, but I’m getting sick of it. I would like there to be multiple paths to improve your character, not just by doing dungeons over and over again 100 times. The grind gear, so I can then grind for more gear is an aspect that needs to go. Not saying that players should get epics handed out to them and there still can be a grind. But the best grinds are the ones that don’t feel like a grind.

1. For instance.... crafting!

The crafting system in this game is excellent. But from what I’ve read on these forums, other forums and well just looking and comparing recipes to loot drops you see how worthless it really is. Which is a shame, I’ve lost all motivation to level AS and mining.

Honestly crafted gear should be on par with dungeon/raid gear. Also I would like to see craftable PVP armour (when pvp is patched in). I would go on that say that PVP gear should only be player made, and that say they need certain pvp points or ranks to equip it.

Honestly, i don't know how often i have to post this but crafted gear IS BETTER than dungeon drops or token gear. For Mages the Vanya set (2-3million a piece) with penta melts blows everything away easily. Same goes for Astral and Rose Gold Jewelery.

All the Crafting jobs AF gear is ONLY AVAILABLE CRAFTED!

Where this uninformed notion about crafting being useless comes from is a mystery to me

Thanks for posting that and keep on posting it until these people get it and more importantly for new players who may not even give the game a chance because of this BS.

"Issue #1: Crafting is utterly useless

As I got my LTW to 50, I had a sense of relief. "Alright, I'm done with THAT part of the game..." I thought to myself. I figured with my newfound craft, I'd be able to start making money almost immediately in the game. There is just one small problem; there is no demand for hardly anything. Gear, which should be utilized to a degree by all classes, isn't necessary. Because of the incredible ease of the game, it hasn't been uncommon to see people wearing severely outdated gear throughout the game. I've seen level 40's rocking level 18 armor, and to no real penalty. Since there's no reason for combat classes to buy gear, there's no reason to craft combat gear. Furthermore, combat classes can get gear cheaper/free, and easier simply by doing quests and dungeons. Furthermore, due to Issue#2, people are leveling so fast and efficiently that there's no reason to EVER buy gear! In fact, the irony of crafting +gathering and +crafting gear is that the only people who buy it is fellow crafters and gatherers. Essentially, you're creating gear for crafting because it's mandatory, but crafting has no purpose other than to build more crafting gear...and, of course, materia melding. I basically spent all my gil buying crystals and ingredients to level a craft which is now essentially worthless. Also, since no one needs to buy anything... there is no economy. Gil is essentially used to skilling up a craft, or repairing your end game gear. That's it. And once you lose it, it's 10x harder to make it back, because there is ample supply, and meager demand. This is probably related to the fact that..."

Which is sad, because I think the crafting mechanics in this game are great. Did you ever play Vanguard?

This.  My ltw and armorer are both like around 45, made around 70k gi ish  from crafting, and around 95% of it are from selling crafting meterial or gear , like steel ingot, leather, gloves for crafter..etc. battle classes gears are extreamly hard to sell. Why anyone buy a piece of leather armor for 5000 gil which increases your defense by merly 8, and only for the 3 hours before you replace it with a new one? you can even get better gear and weapons from GC quatermasters with seals which is extramly easy to get. The crafting part of the game is almost entirely seperated from the combat part, people buys crafted items only for crafting, and to make more crafted item to sell to other crafters. LOL

Actually you're right about that and also because many many people love to craft...just for the sake of crafting. I know a lot of combat only people won't understand that but when housing and other non-combat stuff opens up (as well as PVP) crafters will VERY busy.

Please excuse my language, but you hardcore players are annoying as hell.

There is more than enough content in the f*cking game, if you didn't play the game 24/7 you could easily see that. You race to end game and exploit any thing you can find ( in this game, "Fates") then you b*tch when you get to end game. F*ck, take time out and enjoy the game. Don't come to the forums and whine because you been playing the game 24/7 since release! Your messing up the game for normal players.

Reading all these negative comments about the game, I almost didn't even give it a chance. I went out on a limb and bought the game anyways, and to my surprise ITS GREAT. Don't let these hardcore gamers with and negative people stray you from a great game,

Unfortunately the complaints are coming from your average MMO player.  Read the official forums.

The largest threads are on end game content.  Amdapor Keep changes have just created a huge disconnect.  There is absolutely no consistency.

I've seen it happen in a few games:  when nerfs are of the 'exponential' variety you are going to seriously annoy your playerbase.  Maybe it hasn't hit you yet.

But when it does, chances are you'll be wanting to cancel to.  A core base will obviously stay with the game.  But the attrition is going to be fierce.

I think  this is what bothers me the most about people who go out of their way to slam a game on the forums. If you honestly don't like the game, far be it from me to tell you that you are wrong. Ultimately, each of us likes what we like. But it amazing how delusional some people are when they make the leap from "I don't like this game" to "The game sucks and anyone who says otherwise is a fanboy". I'm sorry, but if you are a non legacy player, and have already leveled to 50 and are complaining there is nothing to do, you are NOT the average MMO player, no matter how much you might wish otherwise.

I'm eagerly waiting the digital sales to be resumed and while this don't happen, I'm reading a lot about the game. One of the things that got my attention was the crafting system, that some people are saying is totally fun and worth doing. However, it seems that crafted items will never be as good as raid gear and when players get to level 50 with their main job, they take a crafting class right away and level it up pretty fast. Some people are complaining that the economy is not working very well as a result. Anyone can craft and it's not that hard to take your class to level 50, what makes a lot of people hit level cap with the disciples of hand/land. This way, there's too much offer for the demand and people are undercutting prices all the time, even when it becomes unprofitable.

Best gear right now is for example the penta melded Vanya Set (for healers and Casters) and that is crafted. The only set that beats it is the Allagan Set which drops in Coils of Bahamut and only very few can access it and even less have any chance of getting gear from it.

The set costs around 2 million per piece plus another 500k ish per piece for materia.

The same is true for jewelery, Rose Gold Earrings and Rings are way better than drops or token gear.

Then, there's the materia system. I don't know very well how it works. It seems that the more you use an item, the more spirit-bonded it will be with your character and when it hits 100%, you are given the option of melding it into materia, that you can insert on slots that equipments have. However, the bonuses given by those materia seems to not make much difference, and, usually, they are more needed for raiding players, who some people claim to be a minority among the community. So, my doubt is: the crafting system, even though it's fun, will be enough to maintain the game's economy?

Materia makes a big difference in gear and i get about 10 melding request a day from people outside the LS so i would not say it's only for a few.

Also, I would like to know from you some thing related to Star Wars Galaxies. I read all the time that SWG had the best crafting system of all times and, until now, there's no game with a crafting system so deep. Why was it so great and how can we compare it with ARR crafting?

ARR is not as deep and complexe as SWG. The reason SWG is regarded the best crafting system was the almost unlimited combinations of raw materials that could be used to change the attributes of crafted items. The raw material had attributes too and it spawned with a set amount of random stats so there was never the same ever!

Agreed - whoever designed the crafting system in SWG was BRILLIANT and FF ARR's crafting system is deep and enjoyable in it's own right but there will most likely never be another crafting system like SWG...sadly.

Any reviews giving it less that that will be jaded and un informed gibberish.

SWTOR got very high reviews too though... for me personally review means nothing, the real test comes after couple of months for MMOS.

Staying power of MMO got nothing to do with high reviews.

I posted this review because I found it to be the most accurate and there plenty of fair criticism to be found in there. The score is secondary.

And - most of the reviews of this game in this forum HAVE been jaded..uniformed gibberish from burned out vets not happy with anything that comes out.

I disagree. Most of us have played many MMORPG's over the years which give us experience with this genre. I'd prefer honesty over hyberbole.

I've been playing video games since Pong so I have a little "experience" also and I find that a LARGE majority of people posting on this forum are jaded - and perhaps rightfully so - since many of them have been burned by lackluster MMO's in recent years.

I'm new to MMOs and reading this thread was quite enlighting. I didn't expect the economy in MMOs to be this deep. I expected deep, but not this deep. This makes me excited to keep playing the game.

However, I gotta say that Mining  proved to be more boring than I expected. I'm Mining 11 (GLD 21). Than I got to Armorer and quickly leveled to 6. Armorer seemed much better... it looked more profitable and felt far less boring. The mining I had done helped, but it didn't really seemed worth it. I coulda just bought the material, instead. Sure, it would cost some gil, but not much and I think it would save me a lot of time, which could be spent doing something else, like earning XP and gil in a more fun way.

Bottom line is: is Mining actually bad? Does it pay off later on, like getting materials that you can't buy from NPCs?

If you want to make money in an MMO and especially one with a complex crafting system where there is dependency on other classes for items - then do the stuff that people find "boring". I make a killing just selling the mats because people don't like to spend the time gathering - I kinda like it :)

You have to try the game yourself or take what people say and apply it to the way you play.

This game sucks or this game is awsome... means nothing without reasoning.

What I hate about XIV honestly the majority playing love, I cannot understand it but it is the same reason why people like WoW and I said that was the worst mmo I ever played besides xiv 1.0 at launch.

People want different things. Are you a filthy casual or a no-life basement dwelling loser hardcore? Both groups want content for them to enjoy and they want polar opposites.

For those who were hardcore/Longtime EQ or XI players and still want endless content, strong guilds, and long term goals and rewards in game... yea for us this game is a shallow, steaming pile of crap compaired to other games before it. Those who are more mainstream no unnessasary time sinks, can accomplish things in 10mins, no forced grouping, you are rewarded for everything you do, the game is really enjoyable for many of them and has loads of content if you are casual and do not care about making a large structured guild.

XIV is for the casuals. So far I have found NO hardcore elements in it. Even the best in slot items are a joke to get. And I have almost done everything the game has to offer. So it all depends on what kind of player you are and what you want out of it. SE has more or less gave the hardcores the middle finger in this game. If you are a casual this does not effect you 1 bit though.

If you are hardcore (I mean really hardcore... not just a good player, hard content =/= hardcore) you will run out of content before SE releases more. It is the same as WoW in this respect. People from XI are the ones raging the most, because they never had this problem in a FF mmo until now.

Personally my advise.

If you like WoW and are a casual player... check this game high chance you will enjoy it.

If you like the FF series but did not have time to invest in a mmo... check out the game you will probally enjoy it

If you want something revolutionary... do not play this game.

If you want something like FFXI and EQ... do not play this game.

If you liked XI/EQ but are unsure about it... try it, but realize it is for the casuals. everything is designed with 15hr a week players in mind.

You mean...people with a life.

This is my first impression of playing first 2 hours of this game.

Quest system : identical to original wow, but slightly less kind, quest line doesn't match map flow very well, so it's geographically more confusing than wow, which is not a good thing for theme park game. (this is theme park game.)

Story telling : identical to SWTOR, plus excessive loading is annoying.

I can agree mainly on all but please, do not compare story telling marvel of SWTOR to this trash. Yet has to be made game to be even remotely close to swtor lush.

LOL, well maybe in your opinion but mine is the opposite swtor was the trash, but hey the voice acting was ok.

Even with the missing vocals in the FF cut scenes the story is WAY WAY better than SWTOR's and being a Star Wars fan it was really disappointing - even more so to find out the millions they spent went to the voice actors and NOT the actual game.

Nha !s-e just need to stop trickle sale and resume full time sale.no game has had it this good .its been a month and they re still stuck refusing to sell.and supposedly they re testing their new hardware.next week -end they should be online.then they all resume sale.by the look of thing In game?I ain't worried people like this title.if they can fix the freaking paranoid DRM that keep disconnecting player we should be good till next wow expansion.and I think blizzard will need to outdo themselves this time.oh USA might pull out of ff14 who knows but the rest of the world will play ff14

They are stopping sales and making it last a month on purpose, they know there will be high player loss so stopping sales till the point when most will leave will mask that.  It's a pretty clever move.

LOL...yeah..those sneaky folks at SE are just scheming away - it had nothing to do with the fact that so many people bought and were accessing the game to the point that they were having server problems. Nope...they just made the game to take everyone's money knowing full well that most people would leave after the 1st month.

Swtor is my no1, followed by wow. Then ... void for long time.

I'm a HUGE Star Wars fan (no I'm not fat - just a "big fan" hehe) I  really wanted to like SWTOR...I really did. I was in beta...bought 2 Deluxe Editions (one for my wife) but the lifeless terrain...poor server performance issues, combat imbalance and lack of any meaningful crafting made it impossible. The cut scenes were well done but the rest of the game was a "void" in my opinion.

FF AAB has renewed that "can't wait to wake up and play" feeling...something I haven't had since SWG - my void has lasted way too long. I mean...I'm literally overwhelmed at what to do 1st - the crafting alone will take a LONG time to master. And - the next patch will feature personal estates and instanced neighborhoods - something a lot of people are really looking forward to.

For anyone interested in playing - don't rush to 50 and miss out on the excellent class story...despite not being voiced for every scene - the story is engaging and makes you feel more like a part of the wonderful world they've created.

I'm altholic so never rush to end game. :-) Leveled so far with great joy as I last checked 13 classes out of 16 to max and for sure all unique class stories. Never enjoyed so much combat in any game, environment (ok, they could add day/night cycle and weather conditions), ... I find comparable only wow here.

Wait...are you referring to SWTOR or FF ARR because FF ARR has some of the best weather conditions of any game I've played (the thunderstorms in South Shroud almost seem real) and there's night and day in all the regions.

Do you think rift and swtor were good games?

Rift was a decent game. And guess what? If did decently.(Until Storm Legion)  SWTOR was a bad game and guess what? It did badly. This game is better than Rift. I'll leave it at that.

Better is subjective and i am glad we don't share the same point of view. Even at release Rift had lot more content and that is what matters. Content is the king something that is severely lacking in FFXIV. And if you think players are going to stick around with promises of something coming up in future while opening their wallets for SE you are mistaken.

FFXIV reminds me of similar problems that SWTOR had.... content lite with very weak end game as a result they lost way too many players. History is going to repeat itself and prove once again why releasing P2P MMOS with such weak end game and light content is a big mistake. Players do not tolerate this anymore.

And no, one does not need a crystal ball to see this coming. FFXIV isn't even half of the game RIFT was at release.

I will leave it at that.

I am still at a loss as to where you guys come from when you say there is no content.

What level did you stop the main story quests?

What level did you stop your main class/job quests?

What level did you stop crafting?

What level did you stop gathering?

What rank are you with your GC?

What level did you stop doing Guildhests?

How many Guildleve allowences do you have currently?

What level did you stop doing the side quests?

How many dungeons do you have yet to complete?

I haven't even touched on endgame yet. I started this game in BP4 with an Arc. Got to 20 and didn't like it, So I tried a Glad. Same thing, got to 20 and didn't like it. Now I am level 30 with my Archer and leveling Pug on the side, I have most of the trade crafts to between 20-25. Since I leveled crafting to support the classes and started over, I hit most of them.

Fact is, Now that I am 30, I have spend my share of time in the Fates loop, but it's not very long before I have to drop out and take care of some of my other business. (see above) One of the biggest shames would be to sit in the FATE loop at the lowest rank for the GC and be wasting all those seals.

I'm right where you are in game...almost exactly...even down to the crafting professions :)

I played Rift and you HAVE to be kidding. Rift is a good game but FF ARR is MUCH better. Story is better...performance is better...combat is better..crafting is WAY better.

SWTOR doesn't even begin to touch this game and I also played that - as well as being a big Star Wars fan and ex-SWG player and I couldn't stomach it.

I will leave it at that.
