Though this game looks great, it's just incredibly boring.

Simple as that.

Are you old enough to remember playing Pong? Now THAT was boring - FF ARR is NOT boring...at all...not even a little bit.

Will be here for the long haul. Classes that matter, a hard core trinity system that gets people to playing together, dungeons that are well designed and fun, lots of content coming out soon and already enough to show they put though into end game and a class system thats a lot of fun. In my 14 years of MMOing there has only been a couple of MMOs got me this excited and I play them each for many years, EQ1, DAoC and WoW. This game is quality.

I'm actually quite shocked at the people thinking this game is a 7. This game deserved nothing under a 9. It deserves a 9 minimum. It's not perfect, but very very good, especially considering the game was remade from the ground up in just two years

I've played MMORPGs for 10 years, including all the big name ones like EQ1, WoW, Rift, Terra, GW2, Maplestory, and ARR is by far the best I've played. It is only launch, and many features they wanted at launch will be coming in patch 2.1 in November.

I disagree.  ARR is a "good" game, but 7 is being generous.  The graphics are less than stellar.  The combat isn't that great.  The game doesn't innovate in any areas (it's by far the most cookie-cutter traditional MMO I've ever seen).  I won't bring up it's abysmal launch.

Imo, fans of Final Fantasy, or fans of traditional themepark MMOs should give ARR a try.  It's got a decent little story and has semi-decent amount of content.  However, the game lacks a lot of depth and innovation that many current and future MMOs have.  It's just your typical themepark MMO with tab target combat, done decently well.

A rating of 5-7 is deserved.  Anything more than that is nothing more than a fan boy rating that doesn't consider the whole package or contrast it to other innovative MMOs.

The crafting system and market in FF blows away the grand majority of the competitors. The depth is just fine.

Furthermore, on a strictly merit-based rating system, a "good game" can per definition never be 5. It is rather 7 or 8. 9 being great; 10 being excellent (ign uses a similar system). In a system, where the ratings are based on comparison and distributed according to a normal contradiction, there are not enough mmorpgs  that beat FFXIV to put it anywhere below 7.

The crafting system in FF isn't anything special.  It's better than some, but not the best by far.

The breadcrumb trail of quests and forced story quest are so unimaginative and non-innovative that it has* to have points taken off for it.

The launch was by far the worst out of the dozens of AAA MMORPGS, and certainly not a representation of what I would expect from a pay to play game.  But I don't deduct any points for that, and the issues have been mostly cleared up already.

Instanced dungeons are simplistic and often boring.

The combat system is slow, clunky and extremely cookie cutter.

Zero innovation in story telling.  Most of the cutscenes don't even have voice overs.  You can't control anything in the story.  Your story is the same as everyone else. etc etc.

The FATE public quest system is horrible.  GW2 did it WAY better, and EQ2 is set to do open world events even greater than GW2.

I could go on and on.

FFXIV is a "good" game.  And as such, 5-7 is "good" and a rating it deserves.  8 9 and 10 are reserved for great and amazing/innovating games, and 1-4 are ratings reserved for terrible - bad games.

FFXIV is a solid 5-7 depending on your own personal preferences.  If you really like themepark, traditional MMOs, and really like the asian/FF theme, a 7 is a legit score.  If you really don't care for the game, you have to admit the game is at least a 5 or 6, because what it does do (even though it's nothing great, new or revolutionary) it does well enough.

But 8 9 or 10?

On what planet? lol.

There's only one crafting system that I know of that is better than FF ARR and it's SWG. Please tell me which game that's out NOW that you think is better - I should be playing THAT game.

Agreed. I'm not a fanboy of the FF franchise but I do know an excellent MMO when I play one and FF ARR deserves a soild 9 in comparison to everything else that's on the market. I want to know which games these people have been playing if they think FF ARR is only a 6-7.

Crafting is not only the best thing in the game - it's also a BIG part of the game and I'm happy about it :)

Honestly, all these issues can just pile on, because the game is so damn good, that SE has me hooked no matter what happens.  All my friends feel the same.

One of the better user reviews i've read, you kept the comparisons to other games to a minimal degree and gave a score based on its merits, not one paragraph summarization on how it's a clone of X game or does not "innovate" enough that run rampart on this site.

Agreed - a very accurate review of the state of game right now. I'm having more fun than I've had in years and it'll take quite a while for me to even get close to maxing combat and crafting.

No wonder since that many people are starting to leave even before the initial month is done. Closed off world all the way. Bad map design. No real reason to farm mobs. etc etc etc. And no swimming. Oh, and only 1 instance for farming aswell (Amdapor Keep). I must have done that instance more than 60 times to get the gear that is NOT farmable in instance. You buy gear with tokens you earn in the instance. There are other instances aswell that dont drop any loot other than tokens to buy gear for. I have too many reasons to not play this game.

Total troll post  - other than the swimming part (and who cares...really?) everythiung you stated is false.

Really?  The game is a 7 at best.  Great graphics, cool class system with being able to level everything on a single character, stronger emphasis on crafting, everything else the same MMORPG standard (which is fine and functional).  None of that takes into account the horrors of the relaunch with shutting down servers and character creation or the fact that people have multiple 50's playing casually prior to first month being up.  Good game, but it's a C average at best.

And how long did you play the game for?

Instead of actually watching the video of course people would rather just bash IGN or instead of hanging out on the game forum they like they would rather come here and belittle and get attention towards their game cause it is dying.

This is a good review that points out the positives and negatives of the game and is dead on accurate great review. Haters gonna hate, just think some of you jaded gamers need to actually find a game to play rather than whining all day.

Thanks for sharing, it is a real good review.

Right on the money - thanks and it was m,y pleasure :)

I've heard "its a Asian game" allot when it comes to FFXIV ARR.  Yet its one of the easiest mmo to date. Theres nothing hard about it anywhere. You get to 50 in a blink. Crafting is really easy and just super boring.

Then the lack of support for those with real problems with the game. For me its like the game was made in America. Now you see why allot of people like it...its easy. The lack of armors, weapons ...no fun.

What are you talking about, yes leveling to 50 is easy.

But after 50 the hm primal battles and raid are rly not easy. And hm titan and coil are just hard battles.

You probaly havent even beaten one hm primal have u? =/

Some people confuse "time-consuming" with "hard".

You've just met one of those people.

The game stops being "easy" post-30 anyway, your average gamer really needs to pay attention after that point.

Of course here everyone is leet uber pro god's gift to MMO's, so they just have to deal with the game not being challenging enough to their standards.

And here is the problem - you nailed it! I'm glad I'm not the only one who's noticed that.

Its a strange perspective I'm having heh. Most of the complaints I'm seeing about this game were things I enjoyed in star wars galaxies. And I'm enjoying them in ffxiv as well. To say this game is polarizing is an understatement haha

You know...you're absolutely right - and me as well. I get the same vibe from FF ARR as I did with SWG and that's a really good thing.

Yeah, the confirmations and overall excessive dialogs for trivial crap are annoying.  Like when you want to use a choco porter to do something simple like travel from point A to B and have to click 4-5 times thru the same dialogs.  I really hate the retainer system for banking and market board use too - it's so freaking clunky.  If you want to do a leve it's click after click to get and turn in - getting and turning in are more effort than doing.

Picking just 3 gripes for me is tough since while I overall like this game, I think there are quite a few issues that people seem to blow off, excuse, or put up with.

1.  Overall quality of life issues.  No stats on tooltip compare.  Retainer/bank/market clunkiness.  Horrific inventory system.  Even more horrific armoire interface.  Zero gear preview.  Horrible repair interface (vendor AND?OR player).  Can't hide quests on log.  Wonky map.  Limits while mounted (can't talk to npcs, no intelligent/intuitive auto dismounting for combat/zoning).  These kinds of things.

2.  Overall ez-mode and wacko balance of challenge/effort vs reward.  Solo questing is more stripped down and easy than ever.  Fate grinding makes all previous ez-mode gameplay in the genre look compelling - it's xp welfare and one (small) step away from just giving out xp on a timer for being logged in.  Battlecraft leves are ungodly boring but are at least marginally more difficult than solo quests or fate grinding cheese.  Meanwhile, instances require you to be 100% on your game, to wade thru metric assloads of heavy hitting trash with billons of hp, and to potentially DF with complete fools.  Gathering is pure grind that requires more attention than fate grinding.  Crafting is probably the most complicated thing you can do in the game.  The rewards in the game seem to be inverted.  You can drown in xp and seals for doing fates, which require absolutely zero effort/skill/ability/proper level/gear and you get comparatively much less reward for doing instances which require the exact opposite amount of skill and effort (and gear to some extent but you see people in crap gear slopping thru instances while leveling - not even sure how people can have such bad gear in a game that hands out everything like candy except for the fact that they grind 20 levels via fates then go do a lvl 40 instance in their lvl 20 gear).

2.b  The main problem with everything being stupidly easy is this.  It's bad for the game's health and longevity (in addition to being boring as hell for anybody with a brain, MMO experience, or general gaming awesomeness (seems like most players I encounter think they're god's gift to gaming so surely they're affected).  When people can easily level to cap in a week or less and when endgame consists of very little content (at least half of existing endgame content is stuff  you only need to do once or only need to do til you get YOUR drop, the rest is just grinding tombstones and due to no lockouts or anything people will naturally ONLY do the most efficient content, meaning, you grind the same ONE piece of content that's fotm (hasn't been "fixed" yet to prevent it from being "speed run") for maximum efficiency - because 19/20 players play like their life is on the line and if they don't obliterate the game as fast as humanly possible satan is going to whisk them away to gaming hell.  It's bad because we're not even a month in and some guilds are already completely geared and done and selling content to losers.  Tons of people are 50, well thru gearing the current tier, and nearly done.  We don't even have to start subbing for almost 2 more weeks and a lot of people are WELL into endgame.  WTF are people going to do and how is SE ever going to pump out content to match the easy mode speedy pace of this mess they've created?  Nobody has ever managed to pull it off in slower paced games previously.  Make no mistake, FFXIV is a "post WoW clone" and it has the same formula for fail as all of the others (too solo, too easy, no enough end game).  Having such a dramatically faster pace is a really, really bad idea unless SE has a LOT of content just sitting to crank out in the very near future.

3.  I'll go with the 2.5s GCD too.  Sure, FFXI had it.  I didn't play FFXI and don't care.  Most MMORPGs have 1.5s and often less (at least for certain classes) and often have abilities that aren't on the GCD to spice things up.  This game has simplistic class designs and simplistic combat as a result compared to many other big MMORPGs.  There simply ARE NOT many strategic considerations when you have so few options at any given moment.  Nobody needs 2.5s to ponder actions that should be routine.  The combat in this game is considerably more "streamlined" than combat has been in many other MMORPGs.  There's nothing special about it.  Nothing to warrant extra time for deep thought.

Overall, IMO, a lot of fights drag on for too long outside of fate grind massacres that are often over before you can land a hit, especially trash mobs in instances.  Most instance trash serves no purpose other than to fill space and induce time sink, and it does this very well due to health of the mobs being so high.  I don't think it's really proving much - it doesn't take extraordinary skill or ability to wade thru repetitive and boring trash, it just takes patience and perseverance.

The long GCD just means you aren't spamming into carpal oblivion for those horribly long fights but overall, the whole "package" kind of sucks.  The GCD could be 1.5s and instance mobs could have 60% of their current health and the quality of trash fights would be the same.

I also play a tank and the 2.5s GCD just feels agonizing to me.  It lacks responsiveness.  In other MMORPGs if I had spells with 2.5s casting times I would've consider those spells torture, but that's how most spells are in this game.  It's glacial.

It has nothing to do with ADD or anything like that.  I really don't understand why people defend the 2.5s GCD.  It's different from most games in the genre, there's no good reason for it to be that way, and it's not fun for a lot of people.  Maybe you don't mind putting up with it, and that's fine, but do you REALLY need 2.5s to figure out your next move in combat that's this simple?  I truly hope not.

And not one mention of the amazing crafting system. Please tell me which MMO DO you like...because if you're that particular it must be REALLY good.

The handful of people on this forum that seem to hate every game that comes out and then proceed to make dire predictions about it's early demise are not going to affect any MMO if it's done well - and FF ARR is done VERY well.

The people on this forum are mostly bitter...jaded vets who feel they've been burned over and over again by AAA MMO games and it shows with the amount of negative posts. No MMO will EVER satisfy this crowd IMO.

The weird part is your post history isn't clear of this type of activity. Why all of a sudden does this type of posting bother you, when you've done it yourself, when you didn't like something?

I'm trying to be more positive :) Seriously...I don't go around bashing every new MMO that comes out saying it has one month to live after launch and the only MMO I was really vocally opposed to was SWTOR - which WAS bad at the time. I'm not sure what's going on with SWTOR lately...anyone know if the game runs any better....etc?

IGN are really a very untrustworthy review site, they need money from advertising and companies that want a good review simply push money at them before to color their opinions, they didn't even offer seperate reviews of both systems.  You are even starting to see the companies offering money to youtube reviewers these days to make promos to do the same.  Angry joe etc.

End of the day reviews have been proven to be untrustworthy anyway, tor and gw2 proved this.

You obviously like the game, many do not.  There is something to the dislike to the game because if this was a genuinly good game we would all be still playing it and wanting it to be successful to play it for a long time.  As it is we don't and it won't.

You're fighting a losing war, as more time passes more people will start getting bored and turn on the game.

I've asked myself that same question :)

MMO crafting has always been a meaningless money sink until the very last skill points were gained. I hate that.

I also hate that crafters in many of the popular MMOs are expected to participate in high end raids to earn high end recipes and materials. I'd rather go on an epic, time consuming quest for a specific rare material component. But to require that I gather a large group of other players together to kill monsters for hours at a time for a chance that the material will drop randomly and another chance that I'll roll appropriately high enough to win said material... that simply kills my desire to craft.

In ESO I'm really hoping that A) we can use the things we craft even at low skill levels, and B) we're not required to raid to craft the best items in the game.

But...don't you do that with raiding? You spend 4-6 hours in a raid for hopes that some special drop happens - and at the same time we crafters have to deal with the elitism of the raiding community. I refuse to go on raids for crafting recipes for that reason alone.

IGN and "Real" review. That made me giggle...

Sorry, hard to take them ever seriously, considering they are far from giving good reviews.

You may giggle but the IGN review was a helluva lot more fair and accurate than the crap being opined on this forum.

IGN reviews - lulz

http://www.ign.com/games/star-wars-the-old-republic/pc-816935

9/10

IMO SWTOR was 7/10 for the first month, after that 6/10

FFARR is a much better game (initially) and is a better game after a month, but suffers from lack of content and a very small world.

When I started FFARR itr felt like 8.5/10, after I hit 50 feels like 7/10

Hehe...yeah..that review may have been skewed by the reviewers nerd-love for Star Wars. What REALLY hurt SWTOR more than anything was utter lack of content added in subsequent patches and a failure to fix some glaring technical problems along with a rather boring game world...bad crafting system...etc etc.

FF ARR will go the same way if SE doesn't come through with it's planned patch in November with Housing....etc:

http://zantetsuken.net/news/final-fantasy-xivs-patch-future-2-1-2-2-and-beyond

Everyone agree about how bad EA and BW handled SWTOR after launch, till the server merge and the anouncement of content updates every 45-60 days, now the game is actually good, and probably with a few more updates, like the space pvp xpac or dlc, the game will be close to be that SWTOR mmo that everyone was waiting. My point is, MMOs need time but FF need and update pretty fast or they gonna lose an isane amount of players after the free month.

This!

But seriously. Let's be honest. Final Fantasy had good sales as no other high-budget MMOs have come out recently. It has a niche market, and you will see people leaving the game fairly fast.

And to be honest, FF is not a tripleA game. It has no staying power, and is largely unvoiced. I give it a 7/10 tops. It is incomplete, and lacks what other games consider vital.

On the other hand, I've been playing SWTOR for more than a year now, and I cannot shake it. I will NOT sub to this low-budget FF game, and I demand quality for me to justify spending money.

While I do agree that putting things behind a paywall, even for subscribers is a bit harsh, a lot has to be said for the story, and immersiveness of SWTOR.

Some people might like FF: ARR, but I certainly do not.

Let me provide some facts:

1)It has slow, and dumbed-down combat at-least for the first 20-30 levels(Even worse than Rift).

2)The quests are insignificant, click here, do this type of thing.

3)Quests are largely unvoiced, and when it is they have not even bothered with lip syncing.

4)Lack of PVP(I know FF has not had PVP historically, but this is supposed to be a big title.)

5)Generally the game feels incomplete, small and uninspiring.

They are riding a IP wave, and the game will die down once every bodies 1 month free pass runs out.

If this is a re-release, I cannot begin to think how awful the original was.

Wow...do we differ in opinion on SWTOR - I find that game to be terrible in comparison to FF ARR and I'm a really big Star Wars fan...so it was doubly tough for me. I think you're wrong about the 1 month die down...I think the game will continue to grow and get better and has the best "potential" of any MMO I've played in years.

Now...this potential could be squandered if SE fails to come up with a very good, meaningful 1st patch come November/December - and I'll have plenty enough to keep me busy until then. Time will indeed tell.

For those of you who want an actual review of the game and not jaded uninformed gibberish:

http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/09/11/final-fantasy-xiv-a-realm-reborn-review

Judging by the words you use you are not posting the link as a way to voice your opinion about the IGN review, but to take a stab at another reviewer who doesn't agree with you. In true angry nerd form you make yourself look like a fool of a fanboy who is out for blood rather than to understand how the human psyche works and the fact that no two people using the same product will ever agree on anything, ever. I read the IGN review and found it to be written by someone who mostly leveled through FATE parties and took part in very little else for a decent amount of time. Hardly enough time to warrant a thorough review and the score it received. IGN is known for this, however, and it won't be the last time they rush through an MMO while reviewing 50 other games(IGN staff did get slashed recently) in order to just get an arbitrary number out that people like you can use as ammo against others.

I have no problem with people not liking the game for their own personal preferences but I DO have a problem with those who trash the game by misrepresenting features (like crafting sucks..items aren't as good as drops and such nonsense)

Members of this forum routinely trash games because they don't conform to THEIR standards so I'm offering a positive counterpoint to those. Also - I find many of the members arrogant and very condescending and yes...bitter and jaded.
