I had custom settings with everything you could possibly adjust set to maximum @ 1920x1080. I was getting 56fps with no AA... 44 smooth edges... 31 with 2xAA and 18 with 4xAA
I get 90+ FPS on ultra settings.
Anyway... I continue the theory that AA takes pretty big chunks out of your FPS on this game. |

I did. The graphics are from the original Doom and it appear you need Win 3.11 to run the game. |

MMORPGs should NOT be balanced. . . .

Not only in terms of raw numbers... but as a percentage of online gamers that population has EXPLODED in the last 10 years. There are a few different reasons for this... but Blizzard really enjoyed the financial benefits - and it is easy to see why many companies shifted their focus to making games with features to make this crowd happy.

I enjoy a lot of the concepts of EVE. I like PvP. I like sandbox. I like risk and loss. I like guilds. I like the markets. I could go on... But... I also like a bit of flash and entertainment. The skill system discouraged me. I've heard all the arguments, but I could never shake the 'big brother' looming over my shoulder feeling... no matter how hard/well I played, no matter what friends I had willing to offer resources... no.. sorry, I would not be able to do certain things until the game decided I had been a subscriber long enough. Bleh. Travel was boring... I'm not against a VAST universe... I really think insta-queues or 100's of travel portals in games like WoW have gone too far in the opposite direction and kill the MMO feeling at the expense of convenience... HOWEVER... particularly in empire space where you are likely spending your starting time - I felt like waaaaay too much of my time in EVE was spent AFK warping through gates for 10/15 mins... or even more mind-numbingly manually guiding my ship through warps, just to cut a few mins off travel - all to do something that was probably not a ton of fun in the first place (drop off ore, return a quest, go visit another market, etc.). Actual combat (not talking about the results, or limitations, or prepartion, or variety - that is all great) is meh. The most exciting thing is the risk and randomness (or the planning) of open PvP. Visually it is old and not worthy of the imagination that went into the cool ship designs. And there is just something about the connection to your ship and the way you control it that makes you feel like less of a "starship captain" and more like some geek watching two spreadsheets fight each other (represented by graphical icons)... it is pretty uninspiring. |

* I don't know if it is still true - but to correct some of your performanc issues - there used to be a comic outline option in the video settings. Turning this off not only left the game with a more realistic look (preferred by many) - but tended to improve FPS pretty significantly.
CO is the better of Cryptic's 2 games. My impressions are about 10 months old... The thing about CO is that although it was never... ever... ever worth $50 +$15/mo as an MMO (and never could've been, given the apparent performance limitations of the engine and the dramatic lack of content in the released game), some parts of the game were crafted with obvious care and excellent quality. I know Marvel was attached to the project at one point - then left. Do we know the full story behind that? Was it a chicken or egg situation? I can't help but think that if CO had been realized as a superhero version of Guild Wars from the start, it would've had at least as much financial success and a much better critical reception. Specifically - a greater focus on a single rpg-type story (you can play with friends or battle them in an arena, if you want) - with no monthly fee. Follow-up expansions - done right - rather than influenced by waning subscriptions and general criticism of the game - would've probably been more successful. I know F2P is a step down that road - but it's true about having only one chance to make a first impression and with a similar new game already on the market (DCUO - who knows when it will be F2P, if what we hear about its lack of depth is true) - I expect this CO re-launch will fall flat. The wave has crested and Cryptic is left behind bobbing on their surfboard.
** Off topic - but because of the timing and quick turnaround, if solid work is being done - I think the APB re-launch might have a shot. This game also had some very cool and well-done elements... and a bunch of bug/issues... and never made any sense as a $15/month subscription... or any kind of subscription. I could see people making additonal purchases in a DLC format - if the core problems are corrected. |

Way to go STO! Massively's 2010 awards.

Originally posted by Omali This game pissed off so many people - that's why. The actual product (if you haven't played it) is a steaming pile of dung. Now - if this was just your generic Space Navy MMO... it would just be quickly forgotten with only a tiny bit of the venom you see in forums. However... STO was much anticipated and expectations for a AAA product worthy of the brand (particularly as Star Trek fans would see it) were very, very high. So there it is - reasonable or not - I think that's your explanation. |

Champions Online: Lifetime Subscriptions On Sale
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 1/20/11 6:09:08 PM
I'm embarassed for this company. Though to be fair, CO would've been a decent non-subscription game.
The idea of paying for any of their products on a monthly basis is HILARIOUS. |

Open betas are new? New... new like computers are new compared to the dinosaurs? I'm at a loss to think of an MMO that hasn't had an open beta... ever. Even the really crappy ones usually have a quick OB. |

I love the raver with the Glowsticks of DOOM that pop out of his sleeves. We've seen him in both videos now. It must be a really powerful class! |

Feb. 4th Launch is still a go; and new forums
General Discussion « Earthrise 1/20/11 12:27:43 AM
I'm sorry... but they are doing an open beta. It starts on Feb. 4th and costs $50 or so to enter.
The idea that there are perfectly reasonable reasons why there is no open beta... reasons that do not indicate this game is going to struggle out of the box... is just blissfully ignorant thinking. |
