I for one don't really play turned based RPGs. I prefer real time, but to answer your question... In a turned based game, once you choose your attack, you do the attack, turn over, then the mob makes his AI choice and it's your turn again...unlike FFXI, you make a choice, you do the move, stand there while the AI makes decides what it wants to do for 10 seconds, then your guy will auck 10 seconds later..... Nope even turned based games move faster.....Chess is faster.....My mazda is faster.......my stuttering cousin can spit out a tounge twister faster then the battles in FFXI |

The Agency: SOE Aims for Free-to-Play Business Model
News Discussion « General Discussion 8/25/07 5:33:09 PM
I personally like SOE....... They have a great line up. I also like the Free to play business model ideas I have been seeing discussed recently. I don't level very fast these days, and most new content is put out to keep the higher level guys happy, so meanwhile, they get to pay for all the new content and keep the game alive, while I continue to play in the old content and level at my own pace. More or less, I see guild wars,,,, I should also add in Smedley is a tool.......so is McQuaid......SOE needs a Tool shed...... |
|
Originally posted by wrongfeifong Well in my case, when I say FFXI is slow paced, I am not refering to the leveling time scale. I am talking about the first few levels with no skills. Punch...................get hit......................punch.....................get hit......................punch....................get hit..................mighty blows.................get hit................punch hard...............get hit..................punch hard...................get hit...................punch hard..................get hit..........punch hard.....you get 50exp, flint stone, and a two hour period before you get to use mighty blows again! By slow pace, I also mean, that at my age, with my obligations, I can't sit down and put 6 hours a night into a game anymore. On average I get an hour here and an hour there to average out to two hours a day. FFXI can not be played this way, atleast not at an enjoyable pace for me. I really loved FFXI the first time I played it years ago, but my requirments have changed. I need something more like dungeon runners but with some depth to it. |

Well, whats funny is I played at release for a few months on the PS2, and I loved this game. I quit playing because everyone I knew quiet playing it for some reason or another. I recently logged back into it on the PC when a friend mentioned thinking about playing it.....and I have to say I felt like I was getting no where fast....but in it's defense I have been playing a lot of shallow fast paced MMOs lately, so being indepth and slow isn't really a bad thing, in fact if I had more time to play games, like I used to, I would probablly keep going, but since I have so little time, I will move on to something shallow and fast paced again. |

You have to figure one of the first commercial MMOs Meridian59 was developed in the garage of a guys house....I believe orginally developeing it as a LAN based RPG for him and his friends to play, but realized he could make it an online game, he pitched it to 3DO before it was "Finished" <I say it that way, because no MMO is ever finished> and 3DO bought it, and ran it fairly successfully until Origin and Richard Garriot completed Ultima Online and mass advertised. That didn't kill M59 in fact the original developer and a few friends still run M59 under the www.neardeathstudios.com banner, if you are interested in extremely old school. But yes, just like a TV pilot, the idea can sell as well as a finished product can sometimes. Look at the very old VG forum threads at the post by Brad McQuaid himself....as you read, you will see Brad McQuaid is quite a salesman. I think he sold VG and bought a used car lot...hasn't been confirmed yet...or, maybe it was a brothel in amsterdam?...I don't know, I lost track through all the other lies. |

Lots of classes. But not the right classes?
General Discussion « Vanguard: Saga of Heroes 8/03/07 11:27:02 AM
Did I miss something? Wasn't the necro capable of ressurecting a dead mob to fight for them? and wasn't it able to do this on a mob up to four levels above them? Thus a pet class. The pet can tank, and dps. In fact as far as pet classes go, can you consider the ranger a pet class? The summon pet spell is the weakest I have ever seen, and in a good fight, the pet is dead damn near instantly. The spell to more or less force an animal to be you pet break easy as heck too, and was rarely used except to open a fight. The psionic had just as good if not better pet that more or less sent a copy of the target on itself. Pets in Vanguard are the worst I have seen.
Best pet class in a game, I would have to say the hunter in WoW, you got to choose your pet type, and buy bonuses for it to hit harder, or have a higher AC etc... EQ2 the necro was a pretty cool pet class. the mastermind I think it was in city of heroes/villans is a cool pet class too. YES NECRO IS A PET CLASS!!!! |

Lots of classes. But not the right classes?
General Discussion « Vanguard: Saga of Heroes 8/02/07 8:28:13 PM
Ok define a hybrid....ummm shadow knight necro/fighter....paladin cleric/fighter....you are eith a fighter, a caster, a ranged fighter, or a hybrid.....shaman is a hybrid healer/dot caster/fighter sure sucks at all three for the most part, but what do you expect from a multi use class? Games like eve or FFXI actually give class hoppers like myself a lot of choices by allowing us to switch classes with out haveing to reroll the whole charachter. Another game, a little cheese game called Dungeon Runners I am playing right now is the same way, for a small price <a good chunk of your gold really> you can re-spec your stats to be something else. I hate being limited to one roll. I think if I like to play a necromancer, I should be able to encase myself in solid black plate armor and bash stuff with my death enchanted mace while casting spells, just like clerics tend to be able to do in games. Yes..I think there should be some penalty for wearing full plate metal...like a increased timer to my spell casting, takes me longer to cast, longer to recoupe from casting, etc... Or like in dungeon runners, I can be a full on mage wearing full plate if I want...side effect, all heavy armor has a % reduction to run speed, and none of it seems to have a + bonus for intell, agility, or spell damage....so I can take a hit, but I do less damage, and get hit more often, where as with robes and cloth armor, I can cast stronger spells doing more damage, have more mana, can run from battles, etc... When a game gets all of the aspects right, we are all going to be in trouble, they will have to start adding life support periphiels to our computers. "Yeah, I just ordered a new dell, 46 inch holographic screen, rear labotomy style brain jack to eliminate the need for controls or keyboards, a 50 gallon per day urine purifier to keep myself hydrated, and they said I would be able to get the new style aluminum lung rather then the out dated iron one for respiration. I hope the remember to add the automated butt wiper , and IV support rack." |

General Discussion « Vanguard: Saga of Heroes 8/02/07 7:10:56 PM
I have yet to find a game that I am 100% happy with the class....hell 80% would be closer. I am the same way, I love pet classes, but would love to be able to tank, and DPS myself...wait...I want a pet, I want to tank, and I want to DPS, oh what the hell, let me be able to heal myself too, then I will have found my favorite class....what shall we call it? GOD? Demi-god? Gorgon? Hero? Master race? Sorry for the sarcasm <no I'm really not> but please, you can't have the best of everything, you get to be the best at one or two aspects as a dedicated class, or pretty good at several thing in a hybrid class. I agree though, I wish to be a god too please..... |

I have been playing mmorpgs since about late 1993. And I was hardcore, 8-10 hours a day during the week and 15-20 hours on the weekends for a few years.....I worked a graveyard shift, or 3rd shift if you prefer the term, so For years my friends and family in real life were living in a whole other world then I was. I was completely backwards from the average person as far as hours were concerned. So all in all, my frineds in the game were my friends, my real life friends were sleeping when I was ready to go out. Now I have been working a normal shift for years, and a wife, a daughter, a house, a car, a large fish tank, two dogs, a cat, a rabbit, and a turtle to all take care of. I don;t get much time to play MMOs anymore but still love to. So when I get a chance to log in I will. My time is pretty much limited to an hour or two at a time now, and is far from a daily basis, it's usually like once or twice a week at best. So keeping all that in mind tell me how I am going to consistantly group. I manage to get a group now and then, but usually by the time I start a group, or join a group and the people all get to the same starting point for the group, my hour or two is up, and I have to go. Do you really want to start a group, get it filled up and an hour later when you are finally ready to get the group rolling one of the members has to log. That makes my brief time highly unproductive, and irritates most groups. So I choose to solo most of the time, if I know I am going to have a good 4 to 6 hours to play which comes along once every couple of months I will group. This is why I have cancelled all my mmo accounts lately I don't know anyone in the games anymore. I am looking for a game that has an awesome looking for group client, and one that I can compete with others even with my limited time to play. Right now I am playing Dungeon Runners, very basic game, but if I want a group it's instant, I can teleport to the group to start right now. |

Originally posted by luciferxxx Since no one else is going to take the time for the easy bash, I will. Luciferxxx go back to watching demon porn and stay out of my games you WOW fanatic. Your comments imply that WOW coined the terms Soulbound and instances, well I will inform you now, Soulbound items were a part of the dungeons and dragons books in the late 70's and untill current. The first MMOs ever The realm, Meridian 59, Ultima Online, Everquest all dateing between 1993 and 2001 all included instances and souldbound items, it is part of the genre. I am suprised you didn't claim they copied the classes right out of WOW oh my gods, they named them rangers, and mages, warriors, just like WOW! Sorry WOW did nothing new you fool, just because it introduced you to the games doesn't mean it was the first to do it, WOW has elements of all of the games that preceded it, so clear your head of your WOW blindness and do some reading. The fact is that most of the terms used in MMO's came from books years before them. |

Originally posted by johntynes I can assure you Mr. Tynes. I beta tested Vanguard, then played 2 months into the release. I left the game because it didn't fit me as well as I had hoped, it wasn't as unique as McQuaid had sold it to us. But I will tell you even with all the "I hate SOE" thread, and "I am not going to play this game if SOE is involved" threads, Vanguard still had a very worthwhile release. I was there. I saw it with my own eyes. I don't think SOE is the problem with these games, I think the games are the problems with todays MMO. Trying to keep a game fresh and new feeling for several years is a challenge. Give me diversity, let my charachter be unique from everyone else, not only in looks, but skills, make sure I will have things to do even with out a group, my time to play is limited, and for me to miss a week of play and come back and the players have surpassed me by several levels, here I am all alone in the noob areas with nothing to do? this is what can kill a game. I want to be able to log in when I want, fo however long I want and not be at the bottom of the food chain. |

Originally posted by NapocalypseRead my post again...it says other then WOW name one NON-SOE game, as in name one game not ran by SOE that is still running strong other the WOW. MMOs come and go like a monthly period these days, and none of them can hold a persons attention longer then a couple months, because none of it is new. Its all the same old crud over and over again. Imagine standing in line to watch a great new ground breaking fantasy movie and all you get is a movie about a bunch of hobnobits that have to take a bracelet to the ocean of brightwaters to dispose of it forever with the aid of thier friends lego-lass and brandolf the not so wise. |

Okay, back to the real problems...one I am not in beta, this is a games first downfall, not one MMO has succeded with out my beta input. <this doesn't mean those that collected my beta input actually read it, but they still got it.> Second true problem, again there are no Ninjas in your game. I can fix this too. give me a beta key and a little time in the game. Third problem, well the collectors edition needs to come with a keg tap.
What you guys are discussing is all illegit crapola. Yes, every game SOE has taken on eventually ..what was the term? Suxxors? but is that all the fault of SOE? Ultima Online kicked butt for a few years...did SOE have a hand in it? no, and it still went ...suxxor? DAoC...did SOE kill it? nope, Anarchy? Lineage? WOW? M59? The Realm? Point is, while there have been a lot of MMOs that have come and gone, they all eventually sucked, or we would still be playing them right? So is it really SOE that kills them, or is it Time? A game becomes boring eventually. Can you imagine trying to keep a game interesting for 10 years? No damn way! EQ went strong for well over 6 years, I know because that's when I quit playing. Did a particular exspansion ruin it, like so many claim? No..the last few exspansions did, they were all the same thing with a few new loot items, and new skins on some old mobs. Woopity fricking doo! Same goes for every game, how long can one team make a single game go on for? Most of us are bored with life and that is why we play these games, for change, well eventually it gets to be the same old daily routine too. So what does a team do? write a whole new game every couple of years? hire new blood? then you change the whole dynamics of the game to some degree and tick off a certain class/race. SOE has ahad it's problems, it's actually done more good then bad in my opinion. If I still had time to play like I used to, I would so pay for the all access pass from SOE, and get to play whatever I feel like that day. Here is the real problem for games today. : you can't stop. Your wife/husband/daughter/son/aunt/uncle whatever gets sick, and you need to help take care of them...you are off the game for three days. In that three days, your usual group of friends has gaind 5 to 20 levels over you <depending on the game> now you are useless to them, they can either take the time to help level you up <again depending on the game> or they can keep going and hope you catch up. Well unless everyone else takes a break..you aren't going to catch up. Another problem is skills/equipment/spells/etc... the whole reason for your leveling frenzy....hmmmm level 6 ahhh look at this cool spell! I can't wait untill level 8 to see what I get next. Well crapola, now every game is pretty much the same, so you hit level 6 and go oh cool I loved this spell when I got it in <insert game name here> oh wait this version sucks! You want to win me over for awhile, give me a game with all new races, no high elves/wood elves/ dark elves/ humans/ dwarves/ barbarians/ gnomes/ etc... Give me 30 races to choose from, and 80 new classes to choose from, sure it's a lot to ask, but you figure rogues a lone you can do cutpurse/assasin/informant/cutthroat/backstabber/trickster/rogue/pickpocket/scout/cat burgular....got the idea? sure most seem like they would be the same thing, but give each one a set of skills or spells that are thiers alone. I can asure you, pick and 6 geeks from these forums and ask them to brainstorm a class build up/ skill set, spell set for 80 classes and we could do it in a weekend...some of them in a day. Give me a story setting, not FF12 type story, but tell me what has happend thus far in my life and why I am who I am, or give me a really creative outlet to tell my own story. not just a paper doll that I can write a bio in, but something that other people will notice and ask about. Last that I will go into for now....equipment, look at the D&D mmo and how they did equipment, and go even more individual I think armor, shields, weapons should be very personal, I want someone to ask me the story of where I got my +8 kite shield of life, but not have him be able to go out and get it the next day.
