About time! Took them long enough. Now we will start seeing some progression in subscription numbers!

I doubt the hacking is as bad as it is or otherwise there would be alot more people complaining about it than there is.

Derail: Loving those Xmas colors!!!

This is similar to what happened when Mortal Kombat first came out. Man I remember how excited I was to play a game that splurted blood whenever someone got hit and also let you rip people's heads off and burn them alive...

All they need next is to add more wildlife and the world will be almost fully fleshed out.

I am probably going to be subbing up this weekend.

Seriously OP? lol

1 - Sandbox or in the case of darkfall wannabe sandbox are not what everyone wants you can see from the subs of the sandbox games out with the other pve/pvp mmorpgs.

Alot of more popular mmorpgs out there attract people who are not commonly gamers. The population of gamers will increase and over time they will develop to more mature tastes. Kids will have to grow up eventually.

2 - Darkfall 90% of the time your playing in FPV, battles look like unreal tournament but has magic and improvements in stats similar to runescape imo.

There is nothing wrong with this

3 - There's no dungeons and bosses that drop good loots that is not craftable that many like you can see why wow is that much popular.

Content can always be added later.

4 - It's a PVP game with little PVE and pve games with added pvp are more popular for the audience.

Player interactions are always more entertaining and rewarding than with an AI

5 - Full loot will never be the next gen for the whole mmos maybe for the pvp sandbox games but surely not for the rpgs one.

A majority of all classic pen and paper games and original mmos had some form of player looting (if not full). It adds to the risk/reward system and gives items a certain tangibility that is otherwise not present in other games.

Enough points to show it will never be the next big thing?

You assume that just because the majority of players right now are playing WoW (and other clones) that nobody ever has any interest in games with more depth and slightly higher learning curve and difficulty.

I can guarantee you that most people out there are hopping from one mmorpg after the next not because they are looking for another clone (Might as well just keep playing WoW for that). Most people don't even know what they want. The sheep follow what is most addicting by principle but after the end-game is achieved and they sit on top of all the grind they did they will crave something more rewarding than high levels and epic loot.

From my point as a player with more than 10 MMORPG games under my belt I have grown tired of level grinding and all forms redundant quest-taking. I will probably be resubbing to DF very soon and seeing if they fixed their initial problems with content and balancing.

I agree. This game has the "POTENTIAL" to be the next big thing. The things they are adding in the future will make it only more appealing to casual players.

Currently:

PROS

1. Nearly no instances = everybody in the same place

2. No levels = less grind

3. No Classes = more Freedom

4. Clan Cities = Evolving world and deep immersion

5. No Auto-targetting = rewards player skill

6. Sounds are IMPORTANT = players use own skill to hide and hunt

CONS

1. Graphics not AAA = Some people will have to get used to GFX (though future expansions will change that over time)

2. Animations = Close-range fighting might require some getting used to

3. Full loot not for everyone = Risk might be too high for some

4. No summons/pets = Some people might be turned off from this

5. Not structured = Game might be too open-ended for some people's taste

6. Little diversity between players = Currently no skillcap/decay so all players become jack-of-all-trades

NOTE: A lot of the issues with the game can (and most likely will). Some of the other issues players might have are purely based on the gameplay mechanics of the game itself (as stated by the devs it is not for everyone).

Deadfrontier (Deadfrontier.com) is a browser mog that is pretty well made.

Fallen Earth is pretty popular right now and seems to have a pretty dedicated fanbase.

That is pretty much all I know of right now...

Yes it sucks. But all you have to do is ride the FOTM. And right now it is scale+. Ride the wave and keep complaining. At least you don't have to reroll a whole new toon! DFO FTW.

Yeah but why does "character progression" have to involve the raising of numbers and stats on a character sheet? Why does a player have to become more powerful? It doesnt neccessarily enhance the gameplay or make it more enjoyable. It does however keep players apart from each other in what are supposed to be multiplayer games. How about a game where you choose all of your skills and abilities from a massive selection at character creation.......and then thats it. Thats your character. From then on you roleplay your part in the gameworld with what you have chosen.

Here is a possible way it could work. Every player at character creation has 1000 points to spend on skills, stats, abilities etc (maybe even hit points). One player might choose to be really strong, is a good carpenter, can swim really well and is good at surviving in the wilderness. Another player might choose to be a fast runner, can use a bow really well, has an understanding of animals and can cast some simple spells. Characters always have 1000 points and this never changes. However players can still learn new things with their chosen trades/skills. The strong carpenter could learn to build different things or pick up various survivial techniques. The fast runner could learn to tame and control various animals or learn new tricks with his bow. Players would also be able to shift their points in certain directions at the sacrifice of other skills/traits. The fast runner might decide to become more focused on his magic spells and choose to become a slower runner (he got fat from sitting around reading books lol).

You say that a game without character progression is just a hack n slash game? Nearly all of the mmos currently on the market have character progression......and they all focus on endless combat and nothing else. Do all the players in those games choose to be mass murderers because they want to? Nope. They do it because its the only option they have. They do it because its the only way to level up their characters.......because leveling up is the only way to make any progress in the game. Would people brainlessly kill thousands of mobs if they knew their characters were not benefiting from it? Its pretty clear that character progression doesnt stop an mmo from being a hack n slash game. If anything it makes it more of one......especially when killing things to make your level go up is the only thing you have to do in a game.

Remove the level grinding treadmills and it becomes pretty clear that virtually all of these mmos dont actually offer much at all in the way of fun or interesting gameplay. You just kill things and then go up levels so you can kill more things that match your level. Thats it. Killing 100s of the same thing over and over isnt fun......but the promise of a carrot makes it worthwhile right? The impression of progress you get from these treadmills is an illusion to keep people hooked on weak repetitive gameplay. Without the levels and exp points the players would become free to do things that they actually enjoy rather than being slaves to the boring activities that come from chasing level grinding carrots......thats assuming there were actually things to do in a game other than endless combat. Thats where most sandbox games fall flat on their faces. MMOs would actually have to provide fun gameplay and things to do that involve interacting with each other (mmo?) to keep players engrossed rather than simply throwing down levelling treadmills to keep them addicted.

But the players in general have been too conditioned to hack n slash level grinding games games to be able to accept or understand anything else.......and the games companies have also become too conditioned by making these types of games for so many years to be capable of making anything else. This is apparent through so many peoples perception that all rpgs MUST have levels and character progression and they MUST make progress through the mass murder of mobs.

I agree with everything you have posted on this thread. You have saved me alot of time thinking and typing this out. Thank you. :)

There is risk of less profit in games with no skill/exp progression. Alot of developers understand that to keep a player interested they have to feed the player their game little bit at a time or they will just burn out quickly. Another problem with the FPS mechanic is that lag can become an issue.

On the other hand I completely agree with the OP and I would love to see a game where players do not have to level/skill up anything and all abilities are equal with their own upside and downside.

One other thing I have personally grown sick of is games that revolve and function entire around combat. I miss sandbox games like UO with a focus on not combat but rather community and adventure. Maybe one of these day someone will put together a game with more interactive enviroments + no skill/level and as much "fluff" as needed to keep the players immersed and involved in their own sandbox community.

EDIT: I believe I have found a game that will be coming out with this basic premise. Look up APB (All Points Bulletin). I do not believe there is any skill progression in that game.

How is Darkfall?

Seems like this game is peaking the interest of alot of people now. Good PR improvements since the release.

I probably won't play this game until they include all the features they had promised so long ago. And fix the problem with the grind (no skill decay/cap = 100% all skills to compete). I will keep my eyes peeled for the next expansion after "Conquer the Seas".

The game could (and already is for some) a safe haven to those who are not into or simply tired of themepark MMOs. Try it if you are in to sandbox games with full loot.

I think it is unreasonable to ask to control a a whole group of individuals with anonymity and some who have different upbringing and/or "bad" parenting.

If what you want is a game that can monitor and "parent" the population then you might need to look at some other recreation for her. Or simply teach her how to fend for herself when she is online.

To help lighten the ammount of dickwads online though you could always make sure to sign her up to all the "ROLEPLAY" servers due to the nature of general population that go to those (+ they are sometimes monitored by GMs for bad non-RP behavior).

It saddens me to see a game with so much potential go to waste. I hope the devs learn from their mistakes and start listening to their players and get the game back on it's feet before it is too late...

APB (All Points Bulletin) will probably catch this market by storm... Check it out! www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/game/358

Who dosen't want to play a GTA-styled game that lets you play cops and robbers against other players?? Not to mention the character customization is the most impressive I have ever seen in any mmo (look on here: www.youtube.com/watch).

I also have high hopes for Mortal Online. Assuming they get the proper ammount of funding to finish fleshing the game out and implenteting all features.

But who really knows?

How about make the trial on a floating island way up in the sky? And then also add death from falling damage while they are at it?

That would be fantastic, though I doubt it.

Only info I got about this game is that it will be a completely new IP. So it will have no connection to any previous game!
