To all the people who post things about Darkfall: Thank you for making it such a controversial and popular game among MMOs. Right now it is one of the most talked-about games and I have to thank all the random posters that helped advertise this games existence (through either bad or good publicity).

This is not a thread that requires much input. Just a thanks and notice to the success of this game which I am currently playing and enjoying because of all the people playing now.

Whether people like it or not Darkfall is only going to get more popular and expand and get more content and eventually put WoW on the back burner (when was the last post about WoW you have seen on mmorpg forums? I rarely see them anymore).

And to all those that wanna say bad things about this thread and the purpose of it... Go ahead. Just another +1 to the Darkfall counter.

Half a year? Considering how unfinishd the game currently is I would give it even more time... More like 2 years.

I will keep my eye on it if they manage to keep the game true to it's tabletop counterpart (as much as possible) without making another EQ/WOW clone.

Idea 1: Squad control. Each player should be in control of their own personalized (and customized) squad.

Idea 2: NO levels or skill grinding. The game should be juast as the countertop equivalent with heavy emphasis on unit variety (and tactics) for your squads.

This game is a hidden gem that will blow away all other mmo games out of the water. Here comes the new generation!

Just wait for APB. No levels or skills. Just fun.

The game is getting really fleshed out and has alot of the features they promised. However it feels that even with all these things you can do in the game there is a certain thing missing to make the person feel fully immersed.

Now you guys probably ask. Why fluff? Isn't fluff superflous and unecessary? The answer is yes it is, however in large quanities this unecessary content adds a feeling that you can do more in the game than simply kill and craft. Giving people toys is never a bad idea... Especially in a sandbox!

During the downtime it is always nice to be able to relax playing some mini-games and/or keeping yourself busy decorating something, especially when with others. It helps build a community among peers and can even lead to player-made events!

If you ask me that is the only major difference about Ultima Online and Darkfall. UO isn't purely about killing and crafting, you can do so much in the game that you could even make a character progress without even fighting once! Darkfall is definetly progresing nicely but if it really wants to reach the point that UO was at it will need that extra "UMPH" content-wise to really pull people in to the game world!

I think its important to consider reaslistic comparisions here.

If you compare DF to say Crysis well then you might have a problem but if you compare DF to all other MMO's ever made you start to see what DF fans are talking about.

I would love to play a game that was an mmorpg with all the perks of an FPS. Headshots anybody? How about nutshots?

While there is no collision detection in WoW there is a slight dependancy on movement to keep people in your line of sight. A major noting difference between WoW and DF's combat stems from the standing casts/abilities vs mobile abilities. Darkfall has no standing cast spells or abilities because movement is a very big part in the combat whereas WoW is more about juggling abilities/spells.

When you say juggling abilites/spells to me it means you're playing rock/paper/scissors, which is what most other MMORPGs combat systems boil down to. You select your abilities then go into a fight and fire them off with the other guy doing the same until there's an outcome, is that a fair description?


 

Rock/Paper/Scissors is a simple game with only three choices. WoW not only has more options but also uses timing with the cooldowns and minor movement utilizing the line of sight mechanic. So if you mean that WoW is like a super advanced rock/paper/scissors of the future then you are right. Though I will admit that it depends on your class and template you choose to play since some of them are much more simple than others.

I believe that the OP's final decision will decide what skeptics think of DF's difficulty. Though in the end it is just an opinion. For those with crappier reflexes and aim will find Darkfall much harder. Otherwise it really won't be that bad, though most people can't live with the loss of gear like you have in DF, it dosen't take as much time to get good gear (sometimes it can just fall on your lap randomly!).

I agree with one of the previous posters though that WoW is much better catered to people with little (or no) experience in the mmorpg genre. It feels to me that in lou of Darkfall's sandbox style it could be frustrating for people not accustomed to harsh sandbox games like that (especially if you are a sore loser).

That maybe true but my hunch is that there are a great deal of people who do not like to do something different unless its cosigned by a major development firm.

That is sad. People want to play "Adventurers" but don't want to be adventurous and try new things?

It is because of people like these that the mmorpg market has dried and become so stale... People need to have a little faith in smaller companies and let themselves explore new styles outside of the tired mmorpg mechanics that seems to flood the market. C'MON! LIVE A LITTLE!

I think there are people that are just scared to play out their roleplaying character and actually have to become better "fighters" by improving their own reflex and accuracy... I for one am not scared of losing to people that are better than me. I will still try and hone my skills to improve myself at combat.

The thing that accounts for player skill in WoW (and all other clones) is knowing which skills to use at what time and how to properly time the cooldown of abilities. I will also say that classic MMO-styled games like WoW still do use the enviroment slightly... You can move behind objects and circle around the opponent to get out of line of sight, but in many cases (for alot of caster-styled classes) players will be doing alot of standing casts and mostly just exchanging blows with little to do with the enviroment and involving no player accuracy.

On the other hand Darkfall offers great twitch-based, fast-moving, tactical warfare with little emphasis on juggling of abilities and instead encourages players to use movement as a true tactical form of combat (I love jumping off of people's heads!). My only issue with the game is there is not too many abilities per weapon type or skillset so specialization is not as strong as it could be (but that could change in future expansions). The main thing to remember is that DF is not as much about player templates and abilties and more about movement, accuracy, and enviroment.

In the end both games require skill. It is my personal opinion however that Darkfall in the end is harder. Why? Because it dosen't have random "dice rolls" for damage/resistances/criticals, that was implemented to satisfy the outdated mechanics that started from classic pen and paper games... COME ON PEOPLE! Let's embrace new improved mechanics and get over the nostalgia of the old!

Watching videos like these makes me all warm inside. I love people who can accomplish so much they become legendary and and unstoppable force. Beats fighting epic mobs. :-P

Only one thing would bring me to the game: A hardcore pvp server with player looting (bags and/or equipment).

If you put all the settings to lowest and turn off shadows you should be ok.

I just started playing this game and it has gotten a lot better. So far the community has not bothered me and I am having quite a bit of fun.

I am running this game on a 4 year old laptop. And though I have to turn everything to minimum it does run decently...
