I realized any MMORPG that has question marks hovering over an NPC head is grounds for immediate disgust. I may be a minority on this issue, but look deep inside and you will find this feeling as well. Some of course cannot play a game without handholding, and I understand it is wide market right now, but hopefully new developers can find some money in other ways of giving us content.

Please vote with me. Vote yes if you will refuse to play these WoW clones and generic games. Vote no if you enjoy a floating yellow question mark being the sum of your gaming existence. Battle it out in the thread. But ugh... so sickening. If I see another question mark MMO I am going to puke.

Yeah, people defending the dumbing down of MMOs is surprising but not new. I think the younger people who enter the market think the dumbing down is actually new or a feature. The fact is, you can plot over time how MMOs have become more and more limited with their offerings.

I loved Asheron's Call, where you could use anything as any class, but if you didn't spec in that skill, you didn't do too well with it. Or, if you did spec in to something non-cliche, you found some really odd combinations of abilities....

Even WoW gave you options outside your class, although still limited.

It is lazy, it is a downturn in gaming when developers try to get away with giving their players less options; design choice or not. Imagine a WoW expansion whose main feature is "We are now removing 30% of the abilities, content and features from the game with this next expansion! #hype!" It would be made a mockery of MMO expansions if they did that.

So along come copy-cat WoW games that promise 30% less features and people defend it.

Counter Strike: Global Offensive needs to be put up on MMORPG.com.

Actually, almost all games. I mean, CS:GO you roleplay a terrorist/counterterrorist, you level up your character with kills (money for kills/wins = better weapons = better character) and there's tons of players so its an MMO...

Cool. Standards to the WIND!

Racists.
GW2 will be pure eyecandy, gaming excellence, 10+/10, and if you're into PvE it will last a long long time. And PvP is amazing... it's just the best.

If you play GW2 and then ESO you will think the release dates are reversed.

ESO is poorly executed. Period. The negatives hurt when we have been spoiled with high quality, smooth running, relatively bug free games. Yes, we need to keep pressuring devs. Anything Zenimax is shit for the next 10 years, and as such new studios will likely take more care in their releases.

Also, points NO ONE CAN DENY:

1. The MONEY GRAB is obvious and Angry Joe makes it blaringly so

2. Quests that SPLIT YOU FROM YOUR GROUP is like MMO v0.5 - no MMO was this bad at splitting groups

3. Loot seems pretty shit and aimed at a F2P endgame AND/OR huge grinding - 1 GOLD PER MOB lol... (probably just low zones but still)

One of the first MMORPG games I played was Gemstone 3 on AOL. It was a text MUD game and some of the fun was getting a locked box and having to search town for someone to lockpick it. Seeing lockpicks break... some people complaining about not being tipped, and giving away valuable items as tips because you didn't know any better!

But you have to give the guy to box to pick it. There was some trust there. Heck even WoW had something like this initially. Oh well.

Harder the game, less casual cash cows to feed upon....

WoW has Time Travelling Orcs, unknown years of unknown race and then BAM PANDAS BABY, dragons and gnomes and goblins and spiders and...

WoW can pretty much pull a pile of shit out of their ass and sell it because it is wide open fantasy. They actually did sell shit; if you remember Burning Crusade picking up animal dung for a quest.

Pirates is too pidgeon hole of an idea by itself. It's as if WoW was "Orcs: Kill Humans" (wasn't there a game like that... sounds vaguely familiar...).

Considering the 'pirate' was alone on the oceans for months at a time, I don't see how it translates well into any game. It was more grand-standing and showmanship and fear than actual pirating, fighting, or ship-cannonballing-action. Pirates didn't have tons (literally) of gold to buy ships whereas the governments did.

That leads to a conclusion. The best pirate game will be one about being an imperial army soldier. No mention of pirates! Your job will be to conquer new lands as an imperial soldier. And that way, the actual pirate-wannabe players can go out and intercept supplies, attack ships heading somewhere, etc.

If the gameplay is "Arrr! Sail out and fight head on with someone aye!?" It is just no. No different than two guys playing dress up and sword fighting while standing across a river from each other. Give the possibility for pirating but don't make it the game focus and I could see it doing well.

So, basically the point is that EVE is awesome and bad-ass and 1 in 100,000 people get their lives ruined by other players in the game?

Hell, WoW ruined more lives than that without players even getting involved!

EVE is the Saint's MMO.

Not that MMORPG cares I guess. Whatever brings in the ad revenue.

But seriously, 90% new accounts who found their way to the hype button isn't going to go unnoticed.

Gosh maybe if you guys get funding you can begin creating a game! No need to start on it now, let the money roll in first right?

"...and a PC core game likely under Unity Engine..."

"...if we reach our funding goal."

I am sour mmorpg.com puts up 'ideas' without checking into them a little first. Might as well turn into a news website if you don't need an actual game to be put up on the site.

Just need a website and some self hype, call MMORPG.com and boom, promoted.

I think it is a good idea, and an untapped one.

I would go so far as to say that a pay-as-you-go style would potentially work. For example if all you wanted to do was explore: $4.99/mo. If you wanted to add crafting in there, +$2.49 per month. Want to PvE without dungeons? +$2.49. Want to go into dungeons? +$2.49...

Anyway, good idea, might happen some day as it has no real bearing upon the other $15/mo paying players in a subscription model, except make the game have more players running around.

It isn't that the game would shut down. Wikipedia won't shut down if they don't hit their ungodly budget. It just might have to let some people go, or delay their expansion, or delay some proposed projects.

For a game, not hitting their budget means they won't be able to expand as quickly as they might like. Unfortunately, it also means the game isn't the DREAM GAME we are all talking about. If even I would throw $20 at Path of Exile, then a dream game is likely to get at least that from me, and potentially on a more regular basis.

There's a huge problem in finding the right balance.

I only want to play hardcore PvP games now, gaming gets you there eventually. I know there are some die hard PvE players, but eventually the mob grind isn't enough. So what happens when you get to the hardcore PvP mode? Your dream game involves making someone have a bad time - killing them. Pitting skill vs. skill and showing your enemy he sucks. So there is a lot of negativity in hardcore PvP that is contrary to happy-fun-time donation worthy gaming.

Some day there will be a balance. I can conceive this balance already... it is so simple but so foreign to most thinking about games.

So yeah, don't HAVE to donate or else you can't play, but rather if the budget is not met, you know your game might suffer in the long run. The 3-5% that actually donate anyway will be enough to keep the game afloat if the game is good enough, in which case that 3-5% might be 30-50% and the game will thrive.

Organizations which run on donation as the main source of income but provide their services for free otherwise:

Wikipedia

Public Broadcasting

Charities

Volunteer Organizations

Churches

Organizations which run on subscription fees, providing their service because you pay into it:

City Government

State Government

Federal Government

Government backed organizations

Unions

Can it be done in gaming, to be donation only? Yes. And it doesn't have to be a private server, nor does it have to be the best game in the world. It simply has to be stated that there is an operating budget that needs to be met, and players in the game need to somehow be informed. If the budget is way out of proportion to the population of the service, or if the service is not worth donating to, the service dies.

I rarely pay anything to a game, but eventually when I enjoyed Path of Exile so much, I spent $20. I even reluctantly (after not reading the $1 donation text) donated $10 to Gloria Victus, but was quite disappointed, so I don't think I will ever again donate before I get a taste of the game first.

Donation only has been the theme of talks of game building with friends. Why not make it a hobby you love, make a great game, and simply have donations be the icing on the cake.

I just noticed every game under the top 7 hyped games in development are mostly sandbox games. A large portion of that is also hardcore with difficult PvP. Many have world building. More than a couple sci-fi theme, and a return of space simulation.

As good an omen as this is for future gaming, I am actually pretty pissed off I still have to wait!

You guys are really shit dumb if you think the 'host' is holding them hostage. Ah and they have no backup of the site. Oh gee guess we have to wait to get back to our 'lore' and 'fantasy world of forum chatting about potential features'.

Just to be clear:

EMBERS OF CAERUS IS DEAD.

They didn't want to pay the monthly hosting cost, or had their credit card account cancelled and so the host no longer is getting paid = cancelled hosting. They still have the domain, and thus can put up any website they want at any time, even a placeholder to say 'shit's down!':

http://whois.net/whois/embersofcaerus.com

They don't, because they knew it was a hype scam from the start, and never produced anything noteworthy, and so they are trying to let it die.

The next time you guys see a website filled with hundreds of lore posts but have to dig for hours to find a possible screenshot of a game, you can dive into the lore if you want, but at least know you are likely getting ripped off. And I say ripped off more in the emotional/imaginative/fantasy way rather than financial.

This is the most important thread of the game.

But besides that, regarding the last post here...

Why do you always want a party to group with?

Do you like WoW now that you instantly teleport into a dungeon with 4 strangers?

How many friends have you made this way?

I remember when yeah, it could take 3 hours to get one run together. But then you met people who were on at the same time as you, and who played well, and you kept note. You looked for them next time. And became friends.

BUT I retreat from the thread; the only focus is the instant gratification, carry on.

This game is not an MMO. Neither is LoL. MMORPG is a sellout of a website and in doing so even South Park's game can be listed on this site. Not that there's anything wrong with that. People gotta make money.

This game is a lot of fun and needs to be noticed more. It has Team Fortress 2 graphic style, but all the game mechanics work really well. Very few bugs and it is beta, with patches showing noticeable improvement.

Check it out on Steam and try it!!

It is not Pay2Win, at least not anymore.

Sure, if you pay for boosts and what not, you can get some better drops and eventually have better gear than your free-playing counterpart, but better gear will not save you from a massive amount of traps set by a crafty dungeon maker.

Free to play, and worth trying. You see that some people blow away others' times, and you know they have good gear. Keep in mind at max level, you downrank for certain dungeons, so it feels balanced yet beneficial that you have higher tier gear.

Anyway, it's in Beta but I am enjoying it a lot. Try it out. Once you get some kills in your own dungeon things make sense ;)

It is a game where you pit your action-Diablo-style skills vs. someone else's crafty dungeon-making skills. And then you get to craft your own dungeon and pit that against anyone who dares step foot in your door. Very satisfying to dominate someone's dungeon, or check yours and see you've had some kills in your own.

Repetitive? CoD is the most repetitive game ever, yet still garners views.

CS:GO? Repetitive too.

I may check this out when it comes to Steam. It adds more than just 'shoot target' to the game. It has decision making in the use of items, waiting for team items to go off, etc. Kind of like WoW Arena for CoD. Worth downloading on Steam for sure; not gonna both for now with Ubisoft's who knows what.

Guild Wars 2 is a 10/10 game, and anyone who did not like the game either a) did not play it or b) never played WoW or any other MMORPG before and doesn't know what to do.

The best post above is the one that states the fact they like knowing they can come back to GW2 any time, but has no idea why they do not want to come back. That is how I feel as well. There is no challenge, and the end-game has no point besides fun. And as good as fun is, there still needs to be some kind of threat at the end.

WoW is still successful despite all its failings because it has conflict. That is what is missing from GW2. To date, my wife still has a Horde sticker on her car. She will still say "For the Horde!" as a cheer, and she still hates the Alliance. But she hasn't played WoW for a long time, and I have not played for even longer. Even myself, if I meet someone who played Alliance, they definitely drop a notch in my book.

GW2 needs to add conflict between players. Something for people to rally behind. Just as Democrats and Republicans bring massive amounts of attention and funding by bashing the other side, GW2 needs two enemy factions to go head to head. I strongly suggest that GW2 goes wild and adds an entire new faction complete with new races and their own continent and pits them against the all-loving-happy-guys which make up the current unconflicted population. A Horde to fight the Alliance, so to speak. In doing so, players will re-roll new characters, they will come back to the game, they will want to fight their enemies. They will complain that they are always outnumbered and that it is always unfair, and they will fall asleep every night loving it.

Bring some World PvP into GW2. Bring some Faction vs. Faction (vs. Faction!?!?!) warfare into the minds of your players. Right now, the server vs. server is kind of impersonal and does not leave me with any satisfaction in winning or losing. Having an enemy try and kill me while I'm in the world who is also on my server... now that's fun, and worth my time.

I think the PvE is amazing. I think the WvW is great (but maybe a bit too predictable). I think the Arena matches are extremely balanced and require strategy rather than just burst (WoW). But in the open world - I for one who has explored maybe 10-20% of the map - is useless.

Imagine doing a quest where you have to escort an NPC across a zone while defending him from enemy players on an assassination quest to end the NPC's life. How cool would that be? Right now, we get to sit in WvW and escort a yak while no one cares.

I love GW2 and would be so happy to have them add some conflict to get me back in the game. Right now, GW2 is a 10/10 in my book with no reason to log back into the game.
