However as others have pointed out, the PC has features and uniqueness that still merit it as a viable device. The keyboard & mouse combo is still a powerful enough feature to keep gaming on the PC around for a while yet. MMORPGs & God games are difficult to implement well on consoles and they dont look like disappearing any time soon. |

The Discworld and Blade Runner ideas are great also. How about Julian May's Galactic Milieu series for another self contained universe with plenty to offer the MMORPG gaming world. Edit: I see Sugoi-chan has already put this idea forward. Nice one. :) |

[Review] The War Z: A Painfully Executed Parody of a Survival Game
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 2/22/13 8:27:38 AM
Astonishingly there are some people who love this game. I followed this game on the their official forums since just before release (but not as a poster) and despite people being banned for no reason and complaining of being ripped off/moderator abuse/rife hacking/unfulfilled developer promises/bugs etc some will still turn and say they will buy the game again just to keep playing. It really has been one of the strangest games ever in terms of the furore that surrounds it I've ever seen. |

Is Microsoft endangering the Longevity of MMO?

Is Microsoft endangering the Longevity of MMO?
Hardly, and why would they? The Windows market will not collapse overnight and if it does and wont be because MS wanted it to. That aside if other hardware/software combos came more to the fore that will not be because of MS but because of consumer driven buying pushed by hardware companies such as the likes of Intel, Apple, Samsung, etc. Markets generaly adapt, so software houses will do the same and either release multi-platform MMOs or go with the market leader albeit Android based, Apple, or MS etc. Seriously I wouldn't worry about it. The only thing that will kill MMOs will be consumers. |

Anything but WoW?
This game had my interest until I saw the Halloween stuff several months back so you can guess that all the other typical holiday crap will be thrown into the mix a la WoW. |

By now it must be unlikely that any reader here doesn't know of the trainwreck that The WarZ has become. If you have been following what has happened recently then there are a number of issues that have for me have shown that MMO's (and IMHO The WarZ is not an MMO, but that's another discussion) and gaming in general have slid down a slippery slope.
It's hard to think of any other consumer item whereby we'd pay for an unfinished product, never mind at ridiculous prices. You wouldn't buy a TV from even respectable manufactures like Panasonic or Samsung in the hope they might add sound or colour in the future, never mind a relatively unknown? How did we reach this stage?
We talk about pay to win, but The WarZ seems to have gone further. Pay to resurrect a toon? Pay to have a viable weapon just to survive? This on top of buying the game? We used to buy a game outright and play it for fun but now that isn't enough, someone has seen a way of not just reaching into your pocket and taking your money but grabbing your balls at the same time and squeezing. Where does it end?
Total Biscuit made a very poignant comment in his Vlog following his First Impressions take on The WarZ. It was to the effect that we have stopped being fellow gamers that looked out for one another and have became fan boys. In my opinion, some of us have became fans boys that defend the indefensible, and that includes columnist and websites. What happened to fair reviews that took the consumer into account? It's hard to find a thread now that if someone posts a somewhat controversial comment, that many seem to attack the the poster on a personal level and ignore the actual points being made irrespective if they are valid or not. Maybe it's time we took a step back and looked at where our gaming is taking us. |

The game while it has faults it has many upsides also. For me it has the best story & voice acting (and a ton of it) of any MMO. Plus neat little touches to the stories that take into account whether your light side or dark, and on one story line whether your companion is the same gender as you. They maybe small things but it enhances the enjoyment quite a bit. It's an attention to detail rarely seen in any game never mind an MMO.

David Braben is kickstarting a new multiplayer Elite sequel

As for Evechron Mercenary, you have to remember that when the original Elite came out games were little better than 8 bit Pacman/Galaxian/Defender/Asteroid clones. All of this ran on hardware with much less power and memory of mobile phones a decade ago and designed to fit onto a single floppy disk. If Elite:Dangerous can capture the magic of previous Elite games in a MMO framework then Eve might lose a few customers.

Aaaarrrrgggghhhhnnn!!!! Now this is going to make for a very interesting situation for fans of not just Elite but the whole space sim MMO niche. I loved Elite & Frontier back in the day and never thought that they would make the leap to MMO once Eve Online appeared. Now we have the prospect of Elite: Dangerous going up against Star Citizen. Some of us may be drooling at the prospect of having these titles come along. Mmm, for kickstart enthusiasts this will add a little bit of spice if you've already dropped some cash on Star Citizen. |

You're missing the point - these events are shoehorned into the fantasy of MMORPGs they stick out like a sore thumb and don't sit easily with lore etc. Let's see something new and different. :)

Too many MMOs with holiday events?
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 10/23/12 8:01:54 PM
There has been an awful trend of including holiday events in MMORPGs of late. I can see why some people might love them, but not everyone is into events which essentially are immersion breakers. I'm an athiest, a middle aged athiest at that, so the idea of a heavily commercialised Christian or Pagan events changing what is meant to be escapist fun is not only anathema but downright intrusive. Celebrating Independance Day or Thanksgiving simply has no meaning where I live and has no relevance to the games either. Why can we not have MMORPGs with unique holiday events tied to the lore of their particular worlds? That is something I could buy into and enjoy.

Fun in a MMORPG for long periods of time with no Guild?
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 10/21/12 8:42:46 PM
It's only in the last few years that I've played MMO's mostly solo. Having played online multiplayer games since 1998 I quickly realised that I didn't just want to be part of a team but mould it into something that could be better, more enjoyable. This wasn't some ego trip thing but reaction against the highly disorganised and often racist/homophobic clans that were kicking around back then. Anyway to cut a long story short having led several successful clans & guilds over the years (and a few non-starters :D ) I've taken a back seat from guild life as it is nigh impossible to join a guild and not want to see it run differently. It can be quite difficult being a former leader sometimes, but you can still have fun soloing and teaming up from time to time in an MMO. :) |

[Column] General: The Next Big MMO

Next big MMO? Hmmm.... Probably Wildstar since it has some of the comfort zone MMO items that many like combined with past features that are recenty being missed but still in demand like Player housing for example, and maybe with enough twists to be refreshing. Yeah, Wildstar. :) |

[Column] General: Three MMOs Kickstarted
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 9/30/12 10:35:25 AM
I had to take a second look at the Astronaut video, and yes, it does say the MMO is for the iPad. Are these guys for real? It's hard to think of a worse format for an MMO when you think of all of the features we come to take for granted when playing MMOs on our PCs. I started to make a bulleted list of why it is such an awful idea to do an MMO on an iPad that it became clear that there was no need to do so. It is so self evident that it is hard to believe it didn't get laughed out of NASA. lol Suddenly had several memorable lines from the movie Aliens spring to mind. Pick your best. :) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0090605/quotes
