What killed the Old West was, arguably, the railroad.  Brought civilization, forced the frontier to retreat until it was no more, etc...

In a sense, the "railroad" is killing MMO's.  Linear, "on-rails", phased, storyline gameplay is isolating players from one another, and more importantly, isolating them from making free choices.  It's killing the genre.  It's changing MMORPG to MMOSRPG. (Massively Multiplayer Online Single Player Game)

Oh sure, new games and expacs launch to great fanfare and excitement, but by month 3, the honeymoon is often over and players see through the cracks, and move on to the next game.

I feel we must get on-rails "personal storylines" out of MMO's and bring back worlds.  When logging into an MMO, a player should feel he or she is stepping back into "the world" and not into "Chapter 3 of some lame on-rails adventure."

If you don't like WoW or believe that it's the theme park MMO's killing the genre, then just play a sandbox MMO. Go play Mortal online.

Mortal Online is a first-person MMORPG in a fantasy setting.

Mortal Online is a next generation PC MMORPG both in terms of graphics and gameplay. There are no PvP zones, only an open realistic world where you are free to choose your own path. Experience true real-time combat where you decide every move your character makes and where your personal skill really matters.

Build your own house, or set up a guild to build a keep. With enough power, violence or diplomacy, you and your allies will be able to rule an entire nation.

Choose from many different races and professions. You decide your own style of playing and whether to focus on PvP or PvE, both sharing the same game world. Devote your life to crafting, combat, magic or trading. Discover new skills, tools and resources. Or be the first to explore new areas to put your name on the map.

Sandbox MMO's are out there.

As for  me; I am back to WoW after skipping MoP but if you don't like the theme park games go play in a sandbox. why does every MMO have to be the same? There is room for both theme parks and Sandboxes and both are out there.

Of course it's a good thing. As a well respected global journalistic organization, I trust the BBC to investigate and portray this fairly. The fanboys saying we should never criticize Blizzard "cos they would never rip anyone off evar!" scare me. All big corporations screw their customers to a certain extent. It's part of their nature.

You believing this would be REALLY scary.

There are no longer any journalist organizations that can be trusted. Each and every one now has ratings as their number one priority.  Closely followed by the ideology of the people in charge.

Uh, yeah because I'm sure the BBC cares enough about this to lie about a company with very deep pockets for ratings or "ideology" when there are many other consumer abuses by different companies they could cover.

That is the point though, Blizzard is pretty good about it's expansions. while other companies are far worse. but it was pointed out that the BBC would rather go after a big company than go after companies that were actually doing wrong.

I am glad that our consumer rights oversight bodies in the UK don't answer to WoW fans because according to you the company is always right and the consumer is always wrong.

Personally, I think its good that we have oversight bodies in the UK which report on abuses carried out by big companies but hey maybe that's just me or the UK.

Go Figure.

Don't you find it weird "Consumers" of WoW are saying the WoD launch was a pretty solid launch?

So if consumers are defending the company maybe the show has it wrong?

After all it is a consumer rights oversight body... Shouldn't it listen to the consumer?

Go figure.

You like exaggerating don't you. No one is berating watchdog for reporting consumer rights abuses carried out by companies, we are simply pointing out, in this case they are wrong. Either they don't understand how gaming works, or they are just trying to get viewers by being sensational.

Either way, one of us was logged in the first day of WoD,  and saw it was a good launch with a few normal problems, one of us quit with MoP and didn't see that in general the launch went well.

This post is just excuses by people berating watchdog because they blindly support Blizzard, lets shut down Ofcom next and crimewatch  right?

How is pointing out, they are wrong in this case asking for crimewatch to be shut down? It's like you are saying 1+1= 25. You are using leaps in logic that aren't there.

If it is doing a report on Blizzard, they would be doing it for legitimate reasons and Blizzard must have ripped off the customer.

Or they simply don't understand how gaming works.

The WoD launch was far smoother than most launches. Bugs are going to slip through the cracks even after beta testing. That's simply how it works. A company is only fraudulent if months after launch those same bugs are still there.

What the BBC watchdog should take a look at is company's that charge money for ALFA or BETA games that never actually come out.

I thought I already covered this. They don't report on small companies which affect very few people.

They only report on big abuses of the uk public just like crimewatch doesn't report every crime in the uk, just the most violent ones.

This isn't a "One Company" problem, it is an industry wide problem. Go on steam and look at how many games are being sold that are in BETA, or even worse ALFA.

Blizzard usually does a good job (comparatively) with their expansions. They have a pre-expansion patch that goes up a few weeks to a month before and they begin working out the kinks. However in the case of WoD having a dramatic influx of new and re-subscribers may have helped extend the problems.

However I am happy with my experience, as a gamer a fully expect a glitch or two come x-pac launch day.

I am glad Blizzard is still willing to scrap any project they don't believe in or isn't up to their standards.

why does AA have the most daily/weekly/monthly views latterly but everyone is always commenting on how it sucks so bad,

Wouldn't a person going on to the AA forum and flaming it count as a 'view'?

If so, then you have answered your own question. The reason AA is number one is because 'everyone' (Your word) is going onto the forums and flaming it.

Don't get me wrong, Yoshi P has done an excellent job from bring it back from the dead, but I honestly don't get how it's so popular.

Now this is my 'opinion' but it does nothing new, it's a theme park gear grind with a FF skin...

In the beginning they tried 'something different' and nobody wanted it. So they went with 'the same' but with an FF skin and it worked.

This is ridiculous. Seriously. Rift does good and now they try to cash in? Guess they have to make money some kind of way.

So screw Zenimax becuase the guy broke an agreement which he signed himself which gives Zenimax the rights to anything he worked on while an employee of Zenimax? You know this is pretty standard practice for any company. Dont know why you kids try to act like suddenly this one company is greedy and evil for doing it when every company in the world uses the same types of agreements to ensure this type of stuff doesnt happen and that they have a claim to anything created by their employees using their resources.

I believe it's because they are trying to claim things he was working after he worked for Zenimax. They have a right to anything he worked on while with the company, just not work he did after.

All code he worked on while he was with the company is theirs. But not code he worked on after.

I was watching an episode of "Mad about You" a 90's TV show. In the episode, Paul invests money into a VR headset without his wife's knowledge and comedy ensues.

The Idea of VR headsets have been around for a long time. Zenimax doesn't own that idea. However they would own any lines of code that were created while John was working for them.

I would rather pay a fee each month than be nickel and dimed.

That's why when I go back to Lotro now and then, I just re-start my subscription. I would rather have access to everything than pay for each zone and mount skill and bag space, and a million other things you have to pay for if you play for "Free"

and the few things I do want from the store, I get from my 500 points a month I earn from paying for the game. I have never had to pay more than fifteen dollars a month.

Then when I get tired of the game (I usually do) I just stop my subscription.

Um... 4 hours time it took for me to realize GW2 wasn't a very fun game for me and had issues. I had 2 max level characters in the game as I drilled my way hoping for something to spark which it did not.  So yeah, just cause someone feels your favorite game isn't that great (both personally as well as looking critically upon it) doesn't mean you should miss quote them about it.  I played Mesmer and Thief both to 80 and I could never get into the game. I tried and tried but no, it didn't pan out. Yes, I know I'm stupid for wasting my time when I felt I wasn't big on it to start, but thus the masocist in me was seeking to find value in my purchase to no avail.

Sorry, I'm not picking apart your message but I was wondering about your first paragraph. You say you have 2 max characters in GW2 in 4 hours? If this isn't the case and you didn't have fun in those first 4 hours, why would you play 2 characters to max level?

When it comes to "intolerance of a dissenting opinion", there's three main categories of people here, and on gaming forums in general.

1. Will ask you if you've completed some arbitrary laundry-list of tasks, saying "your opinion doesn't matter" unless you have, and that you're basically not allowed to criticize or express dislike of a game unless you've gone all the way through the game and "have done everything". It's an obvious attempt to pre-emptively disqualify a dissenting opinion of a game by setting some arbitrarily high bar that - it's assumed - someone will not have reached.

2. In the event that the player has done everything (or at least the vast majority of it), the challenge then changes to something more in line with what you asked: "Well, if the game is so bad, then why did you play it for so long?"

3. The third category would be people who like a game but aren't insulted or threatened when someone else voices a negative or critical opinion of it. These people are very rare. Even more rare are those who can empathize and see how others might have the complaints they have, even if they don't share them.

Your question would fall under this 2nd category.

Items 1 and 2 most apply here, and are a blatant catch 22. No matter what the person says, their opinion will still be deemed irrelevant, because they're going to fall into either of the two categories. It's a completely obvious tactic used with an equally transparent motive.

The questions don't really matter, because those asking don't really what an answer. They're only interested in dismissing and invalidating an opinion they disagree with.

Interestingly, you'll only face those questions if you're critical of the game. If you're praising the game, it doesn't matter if you just installed it and haven't even gotten out of character creation. If you say "this is the absolute best MMO on the market", those same people issuing #1 and #2 above will not even second guess you. It's an interesting double-standard that happens constantly around here, with every game.

And in every case, it's indicative of people who can't tolerate negative opinions of a game they like.

You can not be serious right now...have you even...know what nevermind.

Actually he is spot on. Please do tell what part of that he got wrong. I think he nails it on the head.

He's halfway correct, he seems to only see one side which is what people around here like to call White Knights.  You can basically take his 3 categories and pin it to the other end of the spectrum  (the haters is what people call that here) and you get the same results.  He likes to call out white knights but never call out the haters?  Why is that I wonder?

This is just crazy. If a gamer says, I played for four hours didn't like it and quit. the critics say, You can't judge a game after four hours, your opinion doesn't count.

So now we have a guy who didn't like it after four hours but continued to play, (After all you can't judge a game after 4 hours) leveled out two characters and he is criticized for "Continuing to play."

What's up with that???

Just kidding

(I am looking forward to the game, hope it's well made)

Originally posted by chrisatron Developers should stop catering so much to casuals and start making content and games that require some sort of thought, some strategy and furthermore teamwork! Also, I hate to hear this "Well I can't play for hours on end grinding for particular gear, so it should be easier!" Look, if you don't have the time to commit to an MMO then you shouldn't play an MMO, simple.
So many things wrong with this post. Developers are not obligated to cater to anyone just because you say so. if they decide their core audience is now the casuals, it is their prerogative, and they can cater their game to anyone they want. Secondly, i don't commit to any MMO, and i do play them. They are entertainment products, and i use them as i see fit, not what you think how i should play games. It is the devs that put in great features like LFD .. obviously trying to get my play-time. I don't see any reason not to play a MMO, on short spurts, if it is fun.
How come you jump into every single thread that is about more hardcore gameplay in MMOs and basically writes exactly the same thing?
Because such threads are just repeating exactly the same thing as posted before. It is quite appropriate. A repeated response to a repeated topic. Of course, there will be variation on the language to make it more fun.
Yes we all get it you play for fun, yes we all get it you like instant gratification rules, yes we all get it you play MMOs and singleplayers games for fun and yes we all get the silver spoonfed mentality.

But please stop just for once with your copy/paste respons and play the games you like ok, you seems to have shitloads of games and still you had the time to jump into  threads like this and yet again tell everyone you like silverspoon feed games, ok we got it, just let it go.

Why is it OK for the copy/paste threads to get started, but not OK for a copy/paste response? If it's the same thread as before, why not the same response as before?

Wait??? So you're saying there have been other thread topics about Hardcore vs Casual??? Next you will be saying there are more than one thread about, "what is a Sandbox?"  :)

Signing a petition is meaningless. I could put my name on there and there is no way in  hell I'd play that game again.

Get the rights for the game and start a kickstarter up for it and see how many ppl REALLY want it back.

That's not a bad idea, the only question is, would NCsoft sell the rights.

I believe they could do two things to truly improve the play

1) Planetside 2 combat style. There were almost there anyway.

2) Let the Bane be a playable race. Incorperate that into the pvp
