Instancing shouldn't be a dirty word.
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 8/13/11 6:16:38 PM
Not a fan of instancing overall. I think under certain circumstances it may provide more benifit than the alternative ie. Large scale raid dungeons or even the individual missions content of a game like Anarchy Online. However when I see the effects of constant instanced content like Warhammer online had the consequences of which meant the community pretty much spent their entire gameplay sessions just waiting for the next instanced pvp encounter to pop and completely ignored what was otherwise a well constructed open world game environment. I can see the pros and cons of instanced content in an MMO but in any game I intend to pay a monthly subscription fee to play I would prefer to see it used either sparingly or not at all.

The Classless Mmorpg, somebody call Karl Marx! My rant! :D
MMORPG Game Concepts « Developers Corner 3/01/09 10:02:34 AM
Actually that system does work for the general population.
Using classic SWG as an example, from the humble beginnings of that game a character could be whatever mix of skills they wanted. Many of us just picked what we liked. Our characters were unique and we created an actual social society with its own economy and everything. Its the closest thing to a "virtual world" I have played. Only the L337 PWN wannabes all mad the same uber combat templates for PVP and such. The rest of us just enjoyed the freedom of individuality. It was then that Sony decided to cater to the minority and started adding invincibility buffs and such so everyone could be uber soloer types. Then the alpha class jedi compounded the problem and in the end nobody was playing the game as it was originally intended.

could the future of mmos be on consoles as much as pcs ?
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 3/01/09 9:52:50 AM
I hope so.
My PS3 is basically a computer anyway. It has the power and potential to host MMO games as well as having blu-ray so size isnt a factor and its mouse and keyboard friendly as wel as offering a keyboard that attaches to the controller if you prefer. I think the PS3 at least will bring good MMO gaming to the console market.

Do you want to see a big penis in your MMORPG?
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 3/01/09 9:49:43 AM
Well... I think the obvious response to this query is "who doesnt"? Big naked peni are what video gaming is all about these days. Time to get with the program my friend.

Amen to that Fikus. I would love to see territory change hands and it have an overall effect on the game world and players. Like say the sith get a hold of a planet or even just an area and the longer they hold it the harder it becomes to take it back IE more and tougher beasts inhabit it and the areas turn dark and dismal with evil and such Or the jedi hold it and everything flourishes and gets all shiny happy people. . A real transformation you can see and feel.

Which is good in my opinion. It should be made with star wars fans in mind. While SWG in its infancy was an amazing sandbox game it really didnt feel like star wars to me. When I played KOTOR 1 and 2 I felt more immersed in the star wars universe. I hope they can bring that feeling to SWTOR.

What would you do to improve/fix WaR?

My solution is simple. Remove the scenarios completely.

Ridiculous.

I dont think you can derive overall happiness from any one thing in life besides faith.
Having said that however In this context you are correct that one game will not please all people period. Too many people have different tastes and desires when it comes to virtual world gaming. What I dont like is the established developer and marketing community assuming that everyone wants the same thing. I WAS happy with my chosen game (SWG Pre- Osik) and would have happily kept playing it indefinitely if some corporate di'kutla Mir'osik hadnt come along and said " hey WOW has way more players than we do. Lets change our game to be more like theirs" thus alienating the players that werent interested in playing a WOW clone. They traded a solid fanbase for a shot at someone elses. Which as we saw failed miserably. There needs to be many different games to accomodate the many different people who play them. Instead we have the entire industry gambling vegas style all or nothing odds on making a game that will rival WOWs financial success. Its ridiculous.

Broken? No not necessarily. Boring? Yes most definitely.
I always compare games to SWG for the simple reason that it was better than any level based MMO will ever be. It offered me millions of choices that werent hampered by level or class restrictions. I could do or be whatever I wanted and use any equipment with my one dynamic character. I was able to dial in variable degrees of proficiency in a variety of skills without being married to them for the duration of the game.
Virtual worlds need that kind of open character development in order to thrive. It was the only time I ever encountered unique characters built around peoples individual play styles. It was the closest thing to pen and paper RPGs ever made and had it not been for the money grubbing companies that ran it I believe it would be a thriving successful game still.

a long time ago in an MMO far far away.......
EQ when it started anyway before sony expansioned it to oblivion, was the first 3d iteration of what D&D players had done for years with pen paper and imagination. The current crop of games caters to the instant gratification A.D.H.D crowd who want everything fast and easy. EQ was not like that at all. To solo in EQ was to take the hard road. EQ was based around the interdependence of classes and groups. It actually spawned a "COMMUNITY" , a concept this generation of MMO players is unfamiliar with. Travel was long and dangerous and best done with friends. Death had a sting to it that forced players to think before they acted and consider the consequences which could be dire. EQ understood its role and function as an online community as opposed to a single player RPG where you ocasionally see other people. It had its own player based economy, before the bazaar anyway, That required players to actually interact with each other in order to buy and sell their loot or wares thus adding another dimension of authenticity to the "living world" atmosphere they were trying to create. I realize that those days are gone now and the bulk of the people who make up this particular subculture now have acclimated themselves to the generic and sterile environments of games like WOW so we are not likely ever again to see the kind of game experience that EQ classic once offered and I think our lives are somewhat diminished as a result of it.

Warhammer Online : Age of Reckoning: A Talk About 1.1 Open RvR
News Discussion « General Discussion 1/01/09 1:19:55 PM
The only encouraging thing I took from that interview was that they will consider making servers without scenarios in the future. I dont think I am alone in saying that when that happens I will resubscribe for a month to see if its any better. In the meantime however I dont feel its worth my time or money to play this dead empty open world game where everyone stands around waiting for a scenario to pop.

I think its pretty much going to be a glow bat fest. The reason for them setting the game during the time period they chose was to facilitate a large jedi/sith player base. Im not saying there wont be plenty of other classes just that those 2 will undoubtedly be the favorites.

Would you re roll on a scenario-less server?
General Discussion « WAR (Warhammer Online) 11/19/08 8:55:53 AM
Sure I would.
I dont think the scenarios are a bad thing necessarily however I would like to try it without them just as an experiment. I wonder if they ever tested it that way before and what the results were. Assuming the beta testers tried it both ways and scenarios ended up winning out over not having them maybe the game wasnt fast paced enough without them to hold the attention of the current A.D.H.D gamer demographic.

Lets face it if you had a legitimate complaint you wouldn't be posting it here.
People who come here to cry about these games are here to bitch and nothing more. Its all about how the game didn't live up to their expectations and must therefore be garbage. Bottom line is you cant please everyone. You people here complaining either have never actually played it or played it for a short time (its only been out a short time) and didn't like it. Thats your opinion and you are entitled to it however you have already expressed your dissatisfaction by canceling your account. I'm sure the game developers got the message that you didn't like THEIR game however coming here and making posts that say a game is trash simply because it doesn't work the way YOU want it to is just childish. As for those of you who come here and read these posts believing that when some jaded troll says that the game "suxxors" it means you wont like it either and shouldn't try it for yourself? You are a bunch of easily led cattle or sheep...... Lemmings even. You should all be neutered to insure that you don't breed more easily influenced mindless automatons like yourselves.
