Beats the heck out of me. Personally I'm waiting for TESO! Prob won't play anything else for a long time.

Yea, that's what everyone says whenever another FOTM easy game comes out. Watch the video, it explains why TESO will be just a flash in the pan.

Dude, it's really nothing more than an enthusiastic player waxing poetic about what, he feels, makes W* HIS type of game... The part about "feeling" like you've accomplished something in W*... I mean, come'on, different strokes for different folks people.

W* may have the right mix for some, BUT TESO ALSO has that mix for some. Don't go dropping "flash in the pan" statements when it's obviously not your cup-o-tea.

What TESO lacks is what made EQ1, DAoC, AC, Vanilla WoW, and FFXI all so successful. Difficulty, player achievement, and emphasis on multiplayer.  That's what the video was about.

Why play Wildstar? Why am I, an EQ1 raid veteran and Dark Souls nut looking forward to this "cartoonish" game the most of all? Watch this video. The whole thing, it explains everything.

Explain how EQ ran 72man + raids with a 500k Population then?

Where did I say it isn't possible? I just don't think it will be a huge success overall.

Kind of like how EQ wasn't? lol There are still enough people out there that want to play MMORPGs rather than single player games.

As it concern numbers, i never said it will be like WoW or even SWTOR and imo it doesnt needs to be so HUGE in order to be a success.

Yes it doesn't need a huge player base to be a success in general. Who knows which numbers would please Carbine.. maybe 250k.. maybe 500k subscribers? But for 40-man raids there is a certain need of a potent player base. It's hard to coordinate 40 people with jobs or different schedules (maybe even different time zones) for a several hours raid tour. It's always easier the more players there are.

Explain how EQ ran 72man + raids with a 500k Population then?

Seems legit.
Would love a key. Played EQ for 13+ years and looking for something new and exciting. Buildin stuff.

I still enjoy the game, and I'm glad they made the relics a little bit more time consuming to complete. The FATE portion is ok. The part that makes me a little upset is the Tomes of Mythology required.  13,500 tomes will take a very long time to gather, especially when players who aren't decked in the best raid gear need to spend a lot of the same exact tomes on the gear to get into end game content. Add in the fact that many (if not all) players play multiple jobs, you are looking at 100s of thousands of Tomes of Mythology.

I never liked the concept of tokens that you can trade for gear, but never had too much of a problem as it was usually a fairly short grind for them. In this case though, it's kind of sickening.

Would love to get my hands on a key for Landmark. Played EQ for 13+ years and just looking for something new from the quest grinders out there. Thanks!

They should just give people their own instances for the questing game. That way people can't get in the way of your quests. When you want to PvP it could queue you into a battleground then you wouldnt have to see or hear anyone while playing.

Then you get people complaining, "where's the mmo?"

Well sadly those people will find that they have picked the wrong game if they want an MMO. Every game can't cater to people that want to play with others. Single players are the majority now and if gaming companies are following the trends they will provide quality solo content with little to no interference from others.

The casual excuse is getting old. Just because I don't have time to play for 10 hours a day anymore doesn't mean I want the little bit of time I spend in game to be so mind numbingly easy I might as well be watching a tv show. If I wanted to play a single player game with co OP and twitch combat, well that's called an FPS. They've had those for years now.

Nope, its the MMORPG "evolving".  Kind of like how Pop music "evolved" from Michael Jackson to Justin Beiber and rap music "evolved" from Snoop Dogg to Chris Brown.

Can't wait to see where the next evolution takes place!

And people think TESO is the next big thing. Lol.
  • In order to address some XP grinding exploits, we have reduced the XP received from kills in certain areas of the game:
  • Significantly reduced the XP from monster kills in Public Dungeons.
  • Slightly reduced the XP from monster kills in Explorable Caves.
Wouldn't want people to level by killing things. That would be terrible! Then who would grab 8 apples for timmy?
At this point there isn't much hope in changing the basic structure of the game. It's a single player RPG with some PVP added on at the end. If people want to pay a box fee + sub for that, then so be it. Just have to find a game that fits your playstyle, even if they are slowly dwindling.
Sounds like this game will have AoC syndrome. Yay lets get through this terrible quest grind to get to a zone they havent released yet.

You keep talking about these games not having stories and they shouldn't, why then did Raph Koster feel that was one of SWG's biggest problems? He said it right here on

Anyway, there's no right or wrong way to add story to an MMO, thinking there is is attempting to shoehorn this entire genre into your own little box of preferences, I don't want my games in your personal box.

I think the previous poster is complaining about the chosen hero syndrome that plagues a lot of Themepark MMOs these days.  FFXIV ARR has that issue itself even though it tries to hide it as best it can behind the whole "warrior(s) of the crystal".  Not like the story cutscenes acknowledge anyone else in the world besides the players character, unless it's a cutscene with everyone walking into a dungeon looking all shiny and heroic like.

You obviously haven't read his posts then, he's complaining about story being a major focus of game-play and not just something there to play if you chose to (an after thought in the design). He considers a questing focus is "shoving story down his throat". Which is all fine and good as a preference, but he's trying to force that preference down everyone's throat.

Ah, well that is definitely a different outlook.  That sounds like he is looking for something more closely resembling a MOBA or other genre that focuses more on the actual gameplay.  MMORPGs by their very nature tend to have a focus on telling some kind of tale within the gameplay.  Often, those stories may not even have anything to do with the actions the player has taken or will take later on.

Quite the opposite. I think the focus should be on social interaction and the story that already exists in a world where we are just a part of. It's hard to explain I realize because people who.started with mmorpgs after WoW have no frame of reference. They've always just been playing single player games with a sub and calling them mmorpgs.

The problem is that there are very few other options other than the forced questing bunch. Old school mmos and darkfall and Eve...thats it. Almost every other mmo is forcing you down a linear quest path so they can tell you a story regardless if you want to hearbit or not. They make you do the content they want you to do when they want you to do it. Im suprised so many people want to play in an mmo down a linear path. Quests are fine as optional side content.

Stories are hard to tell in less they are linear. You could pick up a book and read a few middle chapters, then some at the beginning, and then the last page, but it wouldn't be what the author intended. You could however do some sidequests while completing the main quest or quests.

On top of that, I wouldn't call any of this game, or game like it "forcing" you to quest. Early DAoC and many similar games you had to grind mobs, craft, group in dungeons, and so on. You don't have to quest to gain XP. There are items you may need through questing however, and that to me seems like a good point to follow the story.

MMORPGs were never about telling a story. They were about creating your own. If I wanted to read a book or watch a movie, I would just do that. I don't need a game to read to me like some book on tape.

I can't think of very many MMO's past or present that have zero story.  There is still a thread pulling you along the big difference being how strongly the pull is.  Most the ones that don't have story are more world building games than MMORPG's.  The key being the RPG part.

Of course there will be a story. It just shouldn't be shoved down your throat from the time you log in until the time you're done with the game.

MMORPGs should be worlds where you are insignificant until you do something otherwise. A very popular quote describes what I, and many others, have been saying for a while.

Everquest:  "You're in our world now".    Their world. Their story. How you interact with it should be up to you. Modern day MMORPGs are just single player games with Co-Op options.

500k+ is a very healthy population, for any MMO... especially P2P.

However, I still see people mis-stating something that should be cleared up and understood when talking numbers. The "over 1.8 million" is how many accounts they have, including inactive ones. I really hate it when companies use those kinds of numbers because it always sends out the wrong message (and is surely intended to do just that). While certainly truthful, it's also misleading, as evidenced by people thinking they mean over 1.8 million active players.

All I'm saying is...

1. Don't confuse "registered accounts" (1.8 mil+) with "active accounts" (~600k). They're two different numbers.

2. ~600k active players is an awesome number, and the game will easily go for years on that.

Exactly. I really hate when the community gets fooled into this PR talk. It's as if their favorite MMO corporation simply couldn't do something that every respectable corporation does. We must be able to see through the bullcrap.

And at the same time, 500k + people logging in every day means there are significantly more subs than that. With that amount of active users on a daily basis, there could very well be 1.8 million paying accounts.
