Have you played Guild Wars 2 yet? Anyone can make movies look good, and talk all day about their game. I'm sure just as many people will be upset with any new game that comes out as are upset with FFXiV. I think many gamers are more interested in forum stalking the newest games than actually playing MMORPGs these days.

Will they have this kind of info on the box:

"Requires gamepad" ?

Why would they have that, when it is clearly not true? Did FFXI have that on it's box? Because FFXI and FFXIV have nearly the same control schemes. People who played FFXI will play FFXIV the same way, with keyboard only. In the beta they don't have directional arrows set up to move camera, but they've already stated on the beta site that they are changing that for release.

Everything, EVERYTHING has to be tested.  If not in open beta than in closed.  If it wasn't in open OR closed betas, then it's not in release.

They have specifically said that they are holding back major story lines and other content. Just because they don't let a bunch of unexperienced beta testers who got drawn out of a hat test something, doesn't mean it hasn't been tested. You think a huge company like SE doesn't have their own group of game testers / QA team?

It won't take people long to realize that Guildleves are not the main source of content in this game. If you play it as such, you are wasting potential.

Which is too bad.

I can see how the conversation went in SE HQ:

"So, director, how far in development is the game?"

"Well, we are getting there, bu.."

"Good, good. Are all the features in place and functioning for release?"

"Well, yes, but they're not nearly rea-"

"That is great to hear. Are the servers holding up?"

"Yes, bare-"

"Good. Get ready to release the game in 2 months."

"That's not a very good id-"

"Silence, do not put your family to shame."

Unfortunately that means more waiting for me. The game is probably finished sometime in 2011.

[Mod Edit]

That's the great thing about MMORPGs, they are never finished. Square Enix has a very good foundation game going with FFXIV, and they are ready to let us start the experience with them.

I personally am glad that they are allowing us to start playing the game how it is. By the time we explore, discover, and learn this new game they'll be adding new content to keep us busy. SE is well known for keeping players busy with tons of content, and I'm sure they won't disappoint this time either.

I personally am going to love September 22nd even with the game in an "unfinished" state as you may call it. Bring it on.

is this game supposed to be targeting the old school crowd?  i wouldn't mind that, it's just it might not do as well and i don't want it to die or be a empty game.  it look's amazing though.

That's who is predominantly following the game right now on the official forums. It's also being headed up by Scott Hartsmann (EQ, EQ2) who has mentioned more than a few times he hasn't forgotten his old school roots and will work in what can be worked in.

I'd put this game at:

..........I..0........

Where Red is the middle ground. Far left is New Schooler and far right is Old Schooler. This one is at about just right (more old school) of center (the yellow zero).

It's not trying to go full out like Darkfall and MO were but it's also not fallen in love with the word "accessibility" either like the majority of other recent releases.

If they can pull it off, count me in. I'll keep an eye on this game, I don't bother reading "information" from Devs anymore, because by the time this game releases it will probably be something completely different anyways.

There isn't any content in the beta save guildleves...

There aren't any mindless mail carrier (WoW style) type quests besides guildleves. Fixed that for you.

Let's elaborate on this a little... for those of you that have played FF11 and do not want to play 14 what is the reason for it, why do you not like the game.

Anyway for those of you that have played FF11 and do no plan or just flat out do not like FF14... what is it that you do not like specifically.

These are a few things i liked about FF XI:

1. The classes felt really well tought out and they had personality to them. I mean at that time it was the only MMO available to me (from Europe) where i could play a Samurai-Class for example. That was a big draw for me. Secondly the way that class combinations worked was unique and motivating.

2. Group-Play meant something. No one could afford to be a total ass, slack off or be clueless about class-mechanics, because these people never made it past lv. 10.

3. The game developed group-grinding and chainpulling to an artform where a specific state of mind called "flow" could be easily achieved by a good team. There was a certain rush to chain-pulling which is hard to describe and something that i never experienced in this quality since.

What i didn't like:

1. The world felt a little bland, the same goes for the races. Up to then Offline-FFs where famous for over the top Characterdesign and imaginative steam-punk artdirection that they re-invented with each new interation. This was all completely absent from FF XI. They tried to play it safe by implementing their own take on the generic races you could find in every generic MMO or Fantasy RPG: Dwarves, Elves, some kind of hulking brute and of course humans. Boring.

2. Story-Quests where few and far between. When you finally reached another tidbid of story, you had long forgotten what led to this part of the story.

3. The economy was broken really fast. Prices went sky-high because of poorly thought out economy tools. At least there was an auction house, albeit, again, poorly implemented.

Now we have FF XIV and it's easy to see how all what i liked about the game was thrown out of the window, while the bad parts not only didn't get fixed but got even worse. There are STILL the same races. They couldn't even be arsed to come up with something new. Classes have been dumped down significantly. Instead of Dark Knights, Bards, Samurais or Ninja, you get "Archers", "generic Melee DD with a 2H-Weapon", "generic tank class with sword and board" and so on. And the list goes on and on. And i don't even care about bugs and technical issues.

After reading this post, it seems that you and I aren't so different after all. The difference between you and I is that I still have faith in SE to deliver a great game that is similar to FFXI in many ways. None of us know what FFXIV will be like in a year, but I do know they have a good foundation going. FFXI ( before any expacs ) was fairly basic as well. All of the advanced jobs came with expansions.

For you, it may be best to wait it out. See what the game is like in a month or so, and see if it would interest you to play. For me, I want to be there at the start this time. I started late in FFXI, and don't want to miss the beginning of another great MMO.

Wizardry, can you create a thread expressly for FF14 reccomendations? You can basically copy and paste and change the wording a little. That way we can have it sticked for people who would like to express issues they have with the game and their ideas for how to improve it, because every 2nd or third thread is about it. So i think that'd be helpful.

We'll ask to have it sticked afterwards

That would change their whining into constructive criticism / feedback. They don't want that. Blasphemy.

To be perfectly honest: I hate it, because i desperately wanted to like it. I even expected to really like it. There was no doubt about that SE know what there doing, regardless of the fact that all offline-titles form square since FF X have been utter crap.

I liked FF XI and thought that FFXIV would be a modern and more polished game, with all the kinks of XI ironed out and full of well honed design choices. The team had many years to learn and hone their skills in crafting a genuinely great MMO-Experience.

Why you still here, we all know you hate it. End of story right?

Bai Bai

And we know you love it and swallow no matter what SE throws out there so how are you any different other than the other end of spectrum?

One of them is hanging out in a forum for a game they like. One of them is hanging out in a forum for a game they hate. I gotta say, one makes more sense than the other to me. I'll let you guess which.

It does not appear to be hating on the part of the op. He is stating what many others have.  He wants to like the game as do others but for whatever reason its a  turn off.  This dude shows up in every thread and goes on about everyone else is wrong and SE is the greatest thing ever, Personally I wish both extremes would take a leap off a tall building.

I wasn't commenting on the OPs post at all. Notice the section that I quoted. The not-so-original poster specifically states that he hates the game. Yet he's on this forum, every day, crying like a little girl about how horrible of a game it is. It's ok, on 9/22 he'll leave this forum, and move on to the "next big thing", and then cry like a little girl when that doesn't turn out to be WoW 2.0 either.

I played FFXI for years, and not adding jumping allowed SE to do some very cool things as far as exploration / maze type terrain.

The thing I like most about this game is that it allows you to explore. It allows you to figure things out on your own. It doesn't tell you exactly where everything is.

Also, it's player character models aren't horrid like in many other new games. Aion and FFXIV did it right, WoW LOTRO AOC EQ2 etc did not.

It's a PVE based game for a change, thank god. And it will be majorly group based. ATM in beta it's more soloing, but that's because it's a beta.

This game will succeed whether people think it will or not. Will it have 12 million players? No, but it will have a solid fanbase that won't be rotating in and out every month.

I wouldn't say its terrible, I would just say it is not a game that was designed for typecasted "mmo gamers" in mind. I guess I just had really high hopes that this would be a traditional mmo, as there hasn't been one in a long time.

Warhammer I suppose was the last ? Citation ?

God forbid developers try something different. Terrible design choice. The last 1000 WoW clones that came out on the market are flourishing.  /sarcasm off

Its over, the glory days of UO and EQ are over, every new mmo coming out sounds fantastic on paper, they do, they sound like they are going to be the next incredible thing. When they finally come out its, its like seeing your girlfriend naked for the first time, she has clothes on and your anticipating what she looks like naked but when the time finally happens its like eh...

So you like WoW, and Guys? Gotcha

You don't necessarily need a controller to play. If you played FFXI, then you are already comfortable with using keyboard only control settings. ATM in the beta, they don't have the camera configured to the directional arrow keys, but they've already stated it will be in at launch.

Who needs a mouse anyways?

I'm in the beta at the moment. The configuration for video settings is kind of weird atm, but if I turn everything off I can run it pretty OK, it just looks like junk lol. I'm leaning more and more towards waiting until Southern Islands, because I don't like the heat of the 470s (not to mention my cpu would just bottleneck it anyways). If I could get a good priced 5850 or 5870 that would be preferable for sure.

I'm not sure about bios updates for my board, I'll have to look into that. I know the board is rated as an AM2+, and can't take DDR3 memory so the newer processors are out of the question. I really do hate computers, seems ilke the day after you upgrade something bigger and better always comes out haha.

The main reason I want to upgrade atm is for FFXIV. It is a very demanding game on the system, and it is somehow pushing my 3870s up into the 80-90 degree C range, and showing very poor performance. Could possibly be my CPU bottlenecking the cards, but my CPU never goes to 100 percent usage on both cores during game. Not too sure what to do at this point.

Ok thanks for the reply. I really do like ATI more, but I guess I was looking too much into this. http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/high_end_gpus.html

This has the Nvidia Fermi cards beating out the Radeon cards by a large margin in price vs performance. Especially the GTX 470 if I can grab one at $249.99. I agree I'd probably need an aftermarket cooler. Any suggestions?

Here is my PC atm, it has a really hard time with FFXIV currently.

CPU: AMD Athlon x2 64 6400+ 3.2ghz

GPU: 2 ATI Radeon HD 3870 512mb Sapphire Crossfired

Ram: 8 GB Gskill DDR2 PC 800 RAM

Mobo: DFI Lanparty 790FXB Socket AM2+

I built it quite a few years ago, so it may be time for a new system altogether. I was hoping I could OC my CPU though, and grab a decent video card to last me through police academy ( Then I can rebuild once the paychecks start rolling in lol ).

Just noticed Newegg has a really good deal on the GTX 470 atm, a Gigabyte version will come to $249.99 after $20.00 MIR  (Though I don't think I've ever had a MIR actually come back lol).

That seems like a pretty good price for a GTX 470 considering the 460s are near that price.
