Honestly, I fail to see why anyone should bother with DF or MO. All the time I read something like "Remembers me of the good old UO days, just lacks some content" bla bla bla. Or "UO was far better, MO and DF are nothing else than PvPing, wheres the content?" bla bla bla.

LOL, so instead of playing that bullshit, j u s t   PLAY   the original!

UO is still there. Period!

Even EA's UO is far better than anything else out there. Period!

And if you do not like EA's UO, play the original Pre-AOS on freeshards like Defiance or Gamers. Period!

And btw: chances are good, that there - finally - will be an official classic UO-shard (see for yourself: thread in UO Forum on MMORPG).

Well, unfortunately, I can not force anyone to return to UO, all I can say is: It's your time wasting on crap like MO/DF.

Ultima Online - without any doubt!

There was no other game, there is no other game and there will be no other game that offers so much variety and game depth. In the years I played UO I tried a lot of different "professions":

- I was a PvPer for several years (and UO has the best PvP ever made)

- I was a house designer for several months (yeah: Girlie Hobby, but I loved it)

- I was a gardener for several months

- I was a Crafter for years

- I owned my own shop for years

- I was a IDOCer for years (probably the best incentive for open PvP, and yet no other game used this method)

- I was a Rare Hunter for months

- I was a Bank sitter for months

- I was a Tamer for months

- I was a Bard for months

- I was a Explorer for weeks

- I was a Role Player for months

- I was a Griefer for years ;)

And probably forgotten more than half of all the other professions I ever tried in UO.

Tell me: In what other game can you

- sit on your mount at the WBB, listen to all the shop owners offering great items for small money, step through the gate to a shop, browse through dozens of vendors, find the item you looked for for months, decide to buy it, just to get ambushed by some reds hidden nearby?

- follow guys for hours to their own house - stealthed and hidden -, get into their house, listen to them for another hour, watch one guy pick up a 120 Magery scroll, pickpocket and steal the item?

- get up in the middle of the night because you found a promising IDOC, recall there, hide and wait for it to fall, notice some reds popping up tracking the whole area, your heartbeat going up to 200, house falls, grab some loot and get away?

- buy server rares?

- trap boxes with deadly poisons, drop them at the WBB and watch some noobs clicking them?

- help Noobs by promising to gate them to Britain, when instead you gate them to the most dangerous dungeon?

Wow, I have to stop here: Can't find any more words for the sheer brilliance of that game. BTW: a game with no End Content, no Raids, no PvE-Part, not focussed on items but on the interaction between players, and not to mention: a game with no quests...

Wow, what a thread ^^

To the original poster: UO is - at least - my future. Tried a lot of other MMOs in the last few years, looked at them for a few weeks, LOLed big time, and everytime immediately returned to UO. I don't see a single game on the horizon that could change that.

UO is - at least - for me unrivalled when it comes to depth and sheer fun. It wipes the floor with every other MMO out there. Honestly, you shouldn't even compare them, it's not like comparing a rolls royce with a Audi, it's like comparing bycicles with cars.

Coming back - after a break for a weeks - to the WBB is everytime like coming home. At night I sometimes listen to all the folks riding along the WBB. It makes me feel happy. I can not understand why people choose to play games like WoW, where it all comes to one thing: Be better than other players: get better gear, see more of the content, get more achievements, LOL. Honestly Dudes, what you are playing is Real Life, so stop the bullshit and make room for your imagination.

To quote Spock: UO was and will ever be your friend :)

Dude, there is an MMO like that out there: Ultima Online.

I spent the last year being a crafter on Defiance Freeshard, holding the largest store there. I never felt more like a crafter than in UO. I had to work several hours ingame after working lots of hours real time, lol.

Check out Defiance freeshard or Gamers. Stick to the best, don't try any bullshit games!

double post, sorry.

I just wrote a long reply to your post until my Explorer crashed ^^, so I make this short:

You have valid points, no doubts, and as I have said: I certainly liked the old UO more (and whenever I get "homesick" I just log on Defiance). But EA-UO is still worth playing. And tbh if you loved UO you simply can not play another MMO right now, as they all offer less. So play Freeshard-UO, play EA-UO or play nothing.

Concerning powerscrolls: yes, they certainly had bad effects, but at the time they were implemented, Fel pvp was already broken, factions were dead. I remember Europa at that time. It would have been better if they had fixed the old system instead of implementing something new, but you can not deny that champspawns and powerscrolls brought new pvp interest to fel. However, the major downfall was implementation of artifacts and insurance. That revamped the whole system and made crafting obsolete for a long time. Powerscrolls destroyed lots of templates, yes, but they also gave the possibility to experience something new. And today on OSI there are lots of different and valid templates. And not to forget: Factions are alive again!

About the dev team, I may be wrong, haven't followed that discussion neither here nor on stratics, but weren't they actually working on Warhammer?

However, I can say for sure that population on Europa right now is better than in beginning of 2005 when I cancelled my account last time.

I miss the old UO too, yes, and I cannot imagine what one could with that game today. Create a new UO with modern graphics and even more features than old UO and I would get a lifetime abo right away. Hell, I remember those threads on stratics, coming from people who spent lots of hours in ideas to bring even more depth to that game. They worked out new skills like gardener etc. What a waste that noone is following the steps of Garriot.

And although I love the old graphic, I would love to see the old client with modern resolution support. I play on 37'' LCD display, and its annoying to be limited to 800x600.

But as long as noone officially is working on UO 2, I stick to EA-UO or Defiance UO. However, I will be trying Eve, as it is the last (serious) sandbox MMO I haven't tried yet. If that fails too, I can state for sure: Nothing out there beats UO, even EAs UO.

Tell you what: I am currently playing UO back on the official shards, after playing for years on Freeshard Defiance.

Even in its CURRENT state, UO still beats every other MMO I tried (which were quite a lot). That throws a very sad picture on todays MMO-market.

Your right.  I quit UO for long time because of Trammel.  But you know what?  I'm back for good.  I played all the new MMO's from SWG to LOTRO and this game still has the most freedom and best character development.  Sure it has all this fancy new gear etc., but you can easily adapt to it.

Tons of Content

Still has some PVP, you can still be a murderer

IDOCS still exist (Fel ones offer PVP)

Skill based system.  Far superior to the level grind

Housing that lets you do anything you want.

Rares, True Rares, Collectibles still exist.  Right now i'm trying to track down my old Whispering Rose.

History.  Some of the old towns and players still roam the lands.  You can still talk about old times, which none of these new MMO's can compare with.

Great interaction with the development team.  LIve events each month.  Meetings with game developers and they are even helping us setup the community by linking player towns

Crafting 2nd to none.

All the above puts UO back on top for me.  Trust me, I was just as upset with all the changes as you were.  However, most those changes are part of all the new MMO's.  The NEW MMO"s dont have what I listed above and thats what makes the difference.  Find an MMO with everything UO offers RIGHT NOW !!  (Early SWG was the only game I found to compete with UO)

I"m hooked again.   I started a player town, got involved with other community members and we are shaping our world.

So say what you want, this game still has the top spot in my eyes.  You can sit on the sideline and rip the coach or get on the field and make a difference.  I don't care about the graphics.  The game mechanics are what matter to me.

Take Care

Well, I couldn't say it any better! Welcome back! There is so much to do in UO, it's amazing! Even when it comes to the PvE-part, which has enhanced a lot (for those who like to do PvE), its better than most other games. Imagine doing a peerless in fel (we did that a lot) and getting raided afterwards. Woohooo!!!!

And you are right, there is NO other MMO that offers that much as UO. You say "I don't care about the graphics". I am still playing with the old client, and I love the graphics! Still! So many details, reminds me of the old Ultima times.

And its not only us, others, who were aways for a very long time, are hooked up again too: http://www.aschulze.net/ultima/

I would gladly go back to UO because, like others, I believe it's still not been topped by any MMO out there. However, I can't bring myself to go back and here is why:

#1 EA's lack of interest in making UO the great game is should be. There was so much potential in UO back in the day and as soon as EA took over, they started driving it into the ground one crappy expansion after another. It got to the point where UO was no longer UO, but something along the lines of WoW with a UO theme. Eventually, it became depressing to even log in simply because you knew the game was never going to improve, only get worse. Which leads into my next reason having to do with EA's lack of interest:

Well, of course we could be discussing for weeks if they messed up the game. In my opinion: yes, they did. But then, I am kind of a nerd, always wanting things hardcore. The players still be playing: the overwhelming majority love all these changes. And I doubt that they still would be playing if a lot of these changes weren't made. As I already told in another thread: i am still playing on an freeshard too whenever I find the time. This freeshard has Pre-Ren-Setting, hardcore, with hardcore players. But even the devs of this freeshard have to integrate changes (and not all of them are good: neons, faction changes etc.) to keep people interested. No changes for a longer period of time means less players. They already stated that.

And I tell you what: Do I like Elves in UO? No! Do I like people able to play gargoyles? No! Do I like that there are some skills hardly used any more like item identification etc.? No! But there are a lot of changes I approve. First of all, I like the Powerscroll System coming into the game with AoS. Yes I know, most of you will be saying: WTF?? Yes, I understand, Powerscrolls messed up a lot of templates. But in no other game I know you can actually be fighting about or stealing things wich permanently boosts your char. There is no other concept, as successful, to give players reason to PvP or play their thieves. Yes, they messed Full Loot System with Item Insurance, no doubt, but the new system has still its benefits. I LOVE DOING CHAMPION SPAWNS!  Its so much fun with being raided over and over, hardcore fights with often about 20-30 players. I love it! Really, I do! Powerscrolls gave players a new reason to get on their thieves. Remember: hardly anyone was playing in Fel before AoS, lots of items were already blessed, nothing much to steal except for a vanq. Factions were already done. The new stats system on weapons: you can say what you want, but I know people who do hardly anything else than "working" on their armor: always striving to enhance it. You couldn't do that before AoS. Then again, it messed up crafting system. Yes.

Atm I can only say, UO has not been better for years! Its so much fun right now, especially since factions are working again! New land, more houses, more IDOCs, new weapons, lots to explore, new skills (even crafting skills), LOTs of champions and harrowers, still a lot of RP (especially on Europa).

#2 Cheating. It's been an issue since day one, no doubt. Back in the days of UOE when it was a simple loop of tasks to make things like fishing a bit less painful, they were constantly on people. Even when people started using recorded macros, they kept banning them. Somewhere along the line though (around 2000) , they stopped caring and suddenly everyone was using macro and skill programs that would do everything for them. Then, to add insult to injury, they made LRC armor which allowed people to mine all over the world using scripts with no worry about being killed. The market for things like ore dropped and suddenly, everyone had 450million ingots in their houses and banks. Oh, and, everyone had miners, which made things worse because back in the day, the only people who had grandmaster miners were the people who really wanted to play them because of how long it took and how expensive it was to make one.

Then there is the duping issue... which is still a huge issue today. Making rare and valuable items worthless as they could be copied and duplicated at will. And EA has done nothing about any of it for years. We even held large protests in game, had GMs coming in and watching, but nothing ever happened. The dupers were still there the following week, proudly displaying their illegal items to everyone.

You are right! And cheating still is an issue. But they announced on stratics forums a few weeks ago (stumbled above that post) that cheating (speed hacking, duping) will be the next thing looked into.

#3 The lack of longevity. As much as I would love to say I would play it, logging in would be a hard thing to do because of the reasons above. I could 7x all my characters again, but what point? Everyone has already won the game. Everyone is already maxed out. You can only fight peerless so many times before you lose interest. You can only attempt to pvp so often when you get ganked by people all using easyuo to keep themselves constantly healed.

UO has never been about "winning the game" like most of the modern MMOs. I still PvP a lot, and yes, there are hackers, but I find a lot people pvping without bugs. How do I know, because I am able to kill them without cheats ;)

And there is so much to do besides PvP in UO. And thats coming from me, hardcore PvPer!

What needs to happen is that UO needs to be redesigned and reborn, whether it happens under the Ultima name or not doesn't matter. But there needs to be changes made, learning from the mistakes and making a better product. Whether it's Ultima or Garriotts new product that he may be secretly working on... we need another game like Ultima.

We need the player run economy with player run houses that have player run shops. We need the players to be the first and foremost resource for items instead of getting powerful weapons from monsters. We need a fully open sandbox world with punishment for dying (full loot) and punishment for killing (Something like the old statloss days where dying as a murderer meant something bad that you didn't want to happen). We need things done right such as protection in towns for people who don't want to be pked. The game needs the best of both worlds that will work for both PVMers and PVPers, even those who want to play a non-combat style game, yet still be at risk.

Mostly, you need a game company that cares about their product and their players. Cheaters need dealt with harshly, the game needs to be supported with bug fixes, new content, and events. Do this, and you will have the next UO that people will be playing in mass for 12 years instead of hanging by a thread.

Agreed, but if you don't like "OSI" UO, get on a freeshard. Defiance or Gamers: Really, it's nearly the same as it was in the old times!

Even if LotRO is no sandbox (and I prefer to play sandbox) I seriously would give it a chance, if they integrated PvP into the game. Without PvP or PvP limited to monsters vs players there is nothing LotRO could offer me (except for brilliant Dirext X 10 graphics). Dunno, why PvP was not an option. Maybe some reasons due to the licence. Perhaps they couldnt "sell" the Tolkien heirs the ideas of roaming hobbits murdering around in the shire.

As I understand, you like a handy PvE-Part and and you are not into PvP? Then I suggest trying out Lord of the Rings Online. Seriously, I can not imagine a better PvE system. EQ/WoW do have more quantity when it comes to PvE, but LotRO has more quality imho. Although you will be limited to PvE.

If you like to play a good PvE MMO but also like to try some PvP there is only choice: WoW. You won't find a better combination between these two aspects. Every other MMO I know focuses only on one part but WoW is doing a pretty good job on PvE and PvP.

May I suggest another thing? If you ever choose to play a GOOD MMORPG than simply forget the ones mentioned above. Try Eve Online or if you are more into fantasy get yourself Ultima Online. Imho UO still wipes the floors with all those wannabe-MMORPGs out there.

Ultima Online:

1. IDOCs: Houses from player accounts that are no longer paid for, are going through different stages ("Like new", "slightly worn", "greatly worn" etc.) until they finally reach their last stage "In Danger of Collapsing". Other player knew about these stages by clicking on the door sign (imagine you could make the same system today with changes in graphics too...). People also knew about the length of each stage. So a few minutes before the house actually crumbles to dust a lot of player recalled to that house and fought about the items. Yes, once the house was destroyed, every item simply dropped to the ground, free for loot for anyone.

2. Rares: In Ultima Online some player seek a special profession: They collect rares. These rare hunters do nothing else than collecting rares and showing them inside their houses. Some even decorated their house like a museum. There are lots of different rares in the game. Server born rares for example sell for several million, while daily rares for exampel sell for less. I had a lot fun getting into the game each morning, shortly after server up, trying to collect these dailys. There are alyways some other player trying to do exactly the same thing.

I can not understand why neither of them was integrated into another game yet (as far as I know).

"Why do people, who prefer to play solo choose MMOs in the first place? What drives them in?"

I havn't read the whole thread, so maybe already mentioned.

But why is it, that everyone seems to assume that MMOs should be about playing WITH each other?

I don't like to be forced to group. When I get back from work, I like to have a few hours in "peace" doing my stuff. I talk on the phone, in meetings, with colleagues the whole day. When I get home I like silence! In groups there is always some kind of hectic, killing monsters together, paying attention what the others do, typing the same time, answer whispers etc. And I surely do not like coming home, getting on teamspeak, hearing kids 20 youngers than I am talking about chicks etc.

Why can't people understand that I choose MMOs over single player games because I also like playing AGAINST each other? I can't PvP in a singler player game. Period! NPCs are way to predictable, even when I am not pvping. When I get into a large city in an MMO, I simply enjoy people doing all kind of different things. Man, I play computer games for more than 25 years now, I think there is not single NPC reaction I haven't learned about yet.

Play in groups if you like, get in guilds, even meet new friends - I totally understand.

But leave me in peace with this "MMOs are not for soloing"-crap.

Don't try Warhammer!

I loved my WoW-Rogue and got into Warhammer afterwards, searching for a Rogue Class. Everyone recommended Witch Hunter to me as a Rogue class. Does not even come close to WoW-Rogue. So if anyone recommends Warhammer when it comes to Rogue Classes do not listen and waste your time.

Does nobody else realize that WoW doesn't really have PVP? It's a mini-game.

Well, although I kind of despise WoW, I have to side with WoW in this matter. You can not really compare it with games like UO, DF etc. It surely has no "meaningful pvp" - granted. But I had fun with WoWs PvP for several months. And I still log in from time to time to get into some BGs etc. The PvP mechanics works very well in WoW and is a lot of fun! You can compare it to Guild Wars (no sense in PvPing there too).

I love sandbox and really don't like WoW and all those WoW clones out there, but if you don't take WoW as an MMO, more like a battlefield or counterstrike (well in fact its much better than the latter, simply because you have kind of a connection to your char), it works very very well! Since UO I hadn't have so much fun PvPing. It really takes years to master your char (in my case rogue). Try makind duels with good players from all different classes. Without YEAR's of practise, you won't have a chance.

Don't make the mistake and expect anything beyond that in WoW.

Best pvp game? Ultima Online. Period.

NOTHING comes even close to UO-PvP. No DAoC (nice PvP, surely better than WAR, but way behind UO), no Eve Online (from what I see out of videos; havn't played the game yet), no Guild Wars (it's more like Battlefield with fantasy gear and - of course - quite more depth; nice game), surely no WoW (although I like the pvp mechanics), especially no DF (quite fun to play, but pointless without skill cap - is it integrated now?), no Aion (POINTLESS flying, totally ridiculous) and no other game I tested so far.

Honestly: Everyone who hasn't played UO yet, and mentioning another game as best pvp game, should really give UO a try. It's not only the pvp mechanics (but you won't forget a duell between to masters of magery), it's the whole thing around it. Full Loot system  (gives craftery real sense), Open PvP in various forms (IDOCs!), several skills which enhance the pvp experience (stealth, hiding, stealing, tracking etc.).

However the adding of new features goes quite slow at the moment considering there is about a month left till the release.

If they really think about releasing that game even within the next few months, it surely will be nothing else than an epic fail!

I described my MO-experience in another thread. To state, that the game is horrible atm, does not come even close. I admit, I only logged into it 5-6 times for a few hours each, all I saw was a static world with nothing to do. And I saw cheaters, a lot of cheaters. Several people FLYING around, jumping from roof to roof, and others One-Hitting-You (with fists) with several thousand damage points.

I can only give the advice: If you really believe that MO will ever become a good game, save your money right now, and wait for a trial.

I will never buy a game in beta again! (Reminds me of my experience with the stock market around 2000 ;)

Hadn't had much to do with console games up to 2004. PC Gamer since 1991 (after Atari XL, C64, Amiga 500). In 2004 I thought, I give it a try. Bought a Dreamcast with lots of games (actually with House of the Dead and two Lightguns ;) and had fun for several weeks. I especially liked to try out something else than a computer mouse like gamepads, lightguns etc. On my PC there was always something to configurate to be able to play with two players. One had to play with keyboard the other with some shitty gamepad, wasn't much fun.

So for sports games, shoot em ups etc. I very much like the DC. Bought an Nintendo Game Cube after that, followed by the Nintendo DS and most recently a Xbox 360. I like them, really, and had some fun especially with the Xbox 360. I like the Xbox live feature, I like how uncomplicated everything is, I like to download demos and videos without even to specify the save path as on PCs. It all works very very fine. Thumbs up!

But in the end, I found myself playing on the PC 90 % of the time. When it comes to sport games, beat em ups etc., a console is great. Granted. But most of the games lacks game depth. I can not play them for longer than a few days. I prefer to play games like Heart of the Iron, Medieval 2, Anno 1404, Risen, Civilization etc. And when it comes to MMOs... well, nothing much to say.

Well, I bought this game (preorder) and went into beta some months ago due to that.

I can't exactly say, what this games offers right now as I am not willing to actually test it at the moment.

What I saw back then was in horrible state though.

Beginning at the patcher and starting the game, cryptic error messages which force you to investigate and install some other 3rd party programs to actually get MO running. Patching itself didn't run smoothly either. But the last time I logged into the game (and therefore loaded and patched the client) this actually went smoothly still not what I would consider "finalish".

The game itself: The Combat system itself seems fun, but when I tested it, this was basically the only thing besides of running around in an almost empty world you could do. The aiming and blocking seem simple but combined with slower movement speed this actually feels like fighting, like two guys circling around each other to find the ideal moment for a hit. I liked that, though it was not in a state which could be called beta.

Actually that goes for the whole rest: The beta I experienced in MO other game developers would have called a pre-alpha. As besides of very basic game concepts there there was basically nothing to do in the game. I have to say that I actually felt scammed a bit as I expected a game in beta status which I could actually play. But when you don't even know where to start to report bugs because basically NOTHING is there, it didn't didn't really keep my attention. Same goes for a friend of mine. We bought the game, played around for a few hours and never took a second look. Until a few weeks ago at least. But I didn't do much more then start the game, wonder that patching works better now, entering the game with a new character, wondered about how the controls and mouse movement suck (not adjustable), run into some kind of fawn, died and spawned as ghost with no idea where to go before I quit again.

What I also want to mention here is that the world seemed 100% static. Just world and NPCs. This does not really work together with the concepts but maybe this already changed (concepts or world).

The Engine actually looks quite good. Compared to darkfall though it seems like that darkfall is a game with great mechanics but a crappy engine and MO instead has a great engine but the mechanics seem to be crap or non existant when I checked.

Of course this all may have changed. I think the concepts of MO are quite good, but the developers need more time. FAR more time as far as I can say. I am really wondering why they are dropping the NDA yet.

And before you flame me about not being a real beta tester - I checked a lot of games in beta status, played bugged games as AO and Necron (both Beta) and also experienced Sandbox games and PvP games as UO, Darkfall and Shadowbane but I have never seen any game in such an early state as MO was when I actually BOUGHT it.

I am looking forward to some in depth views of players who spent more time with current builds though.

100 % signed!

When I actually "bought" the game I was shocked about the state of the game. Graphics looks quite nice, yeah, except for trees, but there was hardly anything to do! I didn't bother to check out the last few patches, so maybe now - with taming, housing, etc. - integrated - there some content worth to play. But about 2 months ago I really thougt: Well, so much for my 50 bucks. And btw: I promised myself to never buy a game in "Beta" (which really was much more lika Alpha) again.

And honestly, I have no confidence in the Devs to balance the whole shit out. I mean, in my opinion, the game would need YEARS of hard work to even get to release state. When I read that they wanted to release it by the end of the year I could not believe it! I would have some confidence if there was a large dev team working on the game, but that does not seem to be the fact.

I appreciate that finally someone (along with DFO) thought about the fact that you may get better results by copying good MMOs like UO then jump on the WoW-train. But MO is NOT UO and it does not feel like UO. It feels like a copy of UO, without ever reaching the perfection of UO.

But as I said, thats what I experienced two months ago. Maybe I should take another look now, but I prefer to wait if it ever reaches release state before I put any effort in it.

Like frigging put quests in them so I have something to do please! Like SWG when that launched I loved it to bits but everyone stood around in cities because there was no content.

LOL? Did you actually try UO at some point? I highly doubt that there ever will be a sandbox as good as UO was in the past (and still is on several freeshards).

If there was a updated sequel to this classic Sandbox Fantasy based MMORPG,,,,, What new features would you like to see added to the game's past traditions?

EA own the Ultima IP. They have tried to make a sequel to UO twice and have failed to launch both times. They got really close the second time. They have ruined Ultima Online well past the point of redemption. The game we have today is absolutely unrecognizable as the game I loved early in it's life. Even after Renn I still loved the game, but the closer they got to Age of Shadows the more it changed for the worse. Then when AoS hit it really cemented the direction they were going to go from then on out with the game, and changed the core of the game to the point that it was really unrecoverable...

Yeah, EA changed the game, and not for the better. I fully agree. But I doubt that UO would actually be running today if they hadn't change the system. There are too few nerds like us, playing the same game over and over for years. They had to make the game more "accessible" and "wowish". Lots of players still like it. I still have an open account and can confirm there is still LOTs of activity.

I do not like the changes, but I see the development of one ot the biggest freeshards, Defiance. That shard still is a blast! Try it and you will nearly feel pre-ren. But nevertheless, they had to implement lots of changes and had to add a lot of stuff to keep people interested. Glady, most of that stuff does not change game mechanics and is purely decoration.

And honestly: I you loved UO, and miss it, you CAN NOT waste your time with any other MMO around. Even EA's UO is so much better than all the other crap. Not to mention the freeshards.

Tell me: is there any other game around, where you can experience stories like that one: http://uothief.com/misadventures/ep229.html
