The video won't play. Is there anything major or particularly good?

You'll have to copy past the link, MMORPG's video player does not seem to work 100% of the time.

The question asked were as followed:

1) Cryss, Could you give us a little information about yourself? i.e. Who you are, where you are from, how you got into what you are doing, what inspires you, favorite class/role.

2) Can you give us a history and background of Aeria Games and what we can expect from them as a developer/publisher?

3) The "Holy Trinity" (tank, here and dps) has been been around since tabletop RPGs, how did the development team come to the conclusion to exclude a dedicated healer and support class ?

4) What type of end game content can we look forward to seeing from both PVE and PvP?

5) What will set your end game content apart from other MMO's on the market to ensure retention of players?

6) There is a basic cash shop in the beta currently - Many players worry about "pay to win". Will EoS become pay to win by having weapons and armor on the cash shop, or will the cash shop have convenience and cosmetic items only?

7) Currently classes/roles are "gender locked", will we eventually be able to play male and female of each class? i.e. Male Sorcerer - Why the decision to be Gender locked?

8) Since the game is originally developed in ?Korean? and is being ported over to Western - What type of delay do we have to wait on for bugs and patched to be implemented? and how far back on versions are we going to be from theirs?

9) The game seems to be centered around PvP and Guild VS. Guild - What type of Guild perks can we look forward to for participating in the GvG? Will there be any territory and or castles that we could own or lands to siege?

10) The games UI, quest system and pretty much everything runs very smoothly- There are some people however that like to customize their game with addons and 3rd party software. Will EoS be one of these game to allow players to develop addons, or will it be entirely addon free? What was the reasoning behind that?

11) There is a guild system implemented based around levels, as you level up you get abilities and it allows more members, right now level 1 is only 20 members. Why was the decision to restrict the amount of players per each level added in? Are you worried this will ostracize large communities with 100+ members and even put them off from the game, as they will not be allowed to take their community with them?

12) What type of PvP maps can we look forward too? Will there be more team based ones, or will they encourage more solo game play?

13) How will this game differentiate the casual and hardcore players? if at all

14) You have quite a great game you are heading up as Community manager, what type of legacy do you hope to leave behind?

Cryss also added in some of his own information outside of the questions asked.

Sorry guys, I couldn't find a forums for EoS on this site. I know recent news has been populating around about this game and I had the chance to do a Q&A today with the Community Manager Cryss. It is a bit lengthy 50+ minutes, but it covers over a lot of questions I have heard around on these forums and a number of other ones.

Millions of dollars in development. A minigame. Awesome.

Go read up on it a bit.. That game was developed by some developers off the clock.

Asherons call just went buy to play after 15 years
Asherons call.. not the crap they did to 2
Yes you guys are thinking on the same wavelength as me.
The list are just some of the large AAA titles or high money backed games, it isn't meant to be the end all be all. But those games had either huge amount of players or even player investers and the studio pulled the plug. Now does a list of 14 games complete my original point, no. It is an OK basis though for a small understanding of trends the developers have been sinking into.
Fun and addicting. What all developers strive for... Well money is first, but such is business

Summary of your list:

1.) Humble Game Developers.  "We screwed up, sorry, here's free time/items"

- If the game isn't exactly what you wanted, you want it for free.  Doesn't happen anywhere in the real world.

In the real world, if your mechanic breaks your car while fixing it, they are obligated to replacing the part and or compensation you for it. Why do game developers get to force you into buying/paying for something, then make it unplayable and are not expected to give any sort of compensation? Look at Assassins Creed: Unity, that game was a mess at launch, in most cases unplayable, yet they sold it and even charged DLC for it. (Yes I know they gave away a free game of your choice to make up for their screw up... oh wait... that is exactly what we are talking about......) Are developers above the law because what we play resides in a virtual world?

2.) Engaging Content that makes you feel important to the world.

- I don't share this, I'm perfectly happy uncovering a story and doing challenging content that doesn't necessarily change the world.  And for you to feel important, you would basically need to find a way to make you stand out from the crowd.  But at the same time, developers cannot lock other players from being able to achieve the same thing.  So you end up with a bunch of players who have all done the special snowflake tasks, and now nobody is special and important.  I need to hear a solution.

Take the idea of world events from Asheron's Call 1. They would have someone play as the world boss of the time, go to a random city and let players engage in some of the most epic fights to give them a sense of immersion.  Hell, even quests that can only be completed during the event (WoW when WoTLK came out with NAXX) that give an item to remind you that you took part in this world event. You felt engaged in this, you cared about the story line and you want more.

3.) Story and Plot.  "WoW gets you into the story"

- WoW's story has been going on for the better part of 2 decades.  You want that from new IPs?  I will grant you that kill/gather quests are stale, but what's your solution?  No levels?  Just kill mobs for no reason?

Why can developers not get someone to write a story about the current state of the game or the patch? Again Asheron's Call, every month released a patch that had an update on the story arc and why things were. Just a small paragraph or hell even a few pages. This remind you of what you are playing for and also completes the RPG of MMORPG. My solution is to make XP worth something again like it was in past MMO's. Currently it is just some bar you fill up, let us spend the points again so we want to do the grind and keep playing.

4.) Challenging Gameplay.

- This is now a niche concept.  Sorry to break that to you.

So making players earn their stuff is niche? Having to actually think 1 step ahead is asking too much? You know what would add to challenge in any game? When you die, you drop some items and have to run back to your corpse to get them back. Hell korean games really punish you by taking away hard earned XP. It doesn't need to be 1 thing great thing, but something more than spamming buttons and stepping out of fire...

5.) Community.  Get rid of LFG, LFR, LFPvP

- I'm with you there, but it isn't going to happen because the majority of players play solo, but still want to do group content (for some reason that is beyond me). Glad you see eye to eye with me 20% of the time... Friends?

Do you really think that if a game was modeled after the original Everquest (All of it's systems, and none of the fluff that newer games have) was to release now that it would be popular? Archeage was successful until Trion got greedy and killed their economy and player base, and also screwed most their population with servers and land... That again was handled by greed. But Archeage brought back a good chunk of that old school MMO feelings and that is what brought a lot of the players to it, and still play.

Everything you said there is your opinion much like the video is mine. Yet, for some reason you feel you are entitled and your opinion means more than mine?

I need more examples of MMORPGs that have failed (please note the past tense), in order to believe that MMORPGs are failing.

Ok, let me post up some of the AAA titles that have been closed in the last decade, mind you these had huge hype, a large following but the developers got greedy:

  1. Tabula Rasa

  2. War Hammer: Age of Reckoning

  3. Shadowbane

  4. Asheron’s Call 2

  5. Auto Assault

  6. Dark and Light

  7. Vanguard Saga of Heroes

  8. The matrix Online

  9. 9Dragons (Last minute purchased by a new producer/developer)

  10. City of Heroes

  11. 2Moons

  12. Darkfall

  13. Star Wars: Galaxies

  14. Stargate worlds

Here I will just put a link up to a list that this site has with a bunch of cancelled MMO’s. http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/show/dead/Cancelled-MMORPG-Games.html  Why don’t you take some time and look this over, and see how many of these could have made it if choices were handled differently. (This SWG, Auto Assault, Tabula Rasa)

Now, to assume all MMO’s are failing is obviously farse, however; you cannot go and attack my opinion when it is clear that the MMO market struggles to keep game afloat. Look at Archeage, Trion Worlds actually killed their own game by destroying their own economy. The Thunderstruck logs and Archeum trees that drove the economy due to rarity, they put them on the cash shop to buy. Look at their population in the game 1 week before that patch and 1 week after. (I do not have a spreadsheet to present off this, just that I can tell you out of personally playing the game, the decline in players)

So, why are they failing in my mind? Because they look at their player base as a cash grab...

Also, what the definition of failure is.  In the video you reference Age of Conan, that game is still alive by my definition.

Failure to me is not being able to keep your game at a solid population, over promising and under delivering, nickle and diming your player base, constant lies to keep people interested thinking things will be better (SOE with Planetside 2). Ok, maybe AoC has not completely failed, but the game could be in a much better place. The Launch was fun, problem they encountered? Their game was not optimised for lower end computers, It was too graphic intense and most people could not get a solid frame rate. They took too long to optimise the game and lost a large chunk of players, they failed to adapt.

Your lack of professionalism aside ("um's", bouncing on your feet, not having your notes next to your camera, etc) since that's not what your video was about

Well, let me explain this, because you clearly want to attack my persons:

  1. The “um’s”, I use them as a filler while I am trying to speak my mind. Hell the greatest speeches in history that come from the heart and not from a piece of paper have “um, uh, err etc. in them. It is not a lack of me being professional, but me pausing to come up with the correct verbiage. How about you educate yourself on this study http://www.cse.edu/dotAsset/09c334de-bf4b-463a-a31e-8426de1cb9fd.pdf before you attack me and my professionalism because I say, “um”. (It is a little lengthy, but clearly you have all the time in the world to poke holes in everything.)

  2. Bouncing on my feet: Well let’s get medical with it. I, since a younger age, have had paresthesias with my legs, with what is believed associated with acute RLS or Restless Leg Syndrome. While sitting, laying down or standing, I constantly move my legs or feet. While playing games, my legs bounce up and down and while standing I pace. This is something I do not think of that I am doing, however; it happens and I live with it. So, does it reflect in the video, sure does, do I care? Not in the slightest… Clearly, you are much more professional than me because of this, I await your video. http://www.rls.org/ feel free to donate

  3. Not having my notes next to my camera: Well at http://youtu.be/cIgz257r49g?t=3m46s in the video you can see me glance off to stage left to look at the confidence monitor I have set up on the floor. Yes it was a bit too far off to the side for me to easily glance at my notes that were on it, but I made it work. Sure, I should have put it under the camera, but I was using a lower stage-floor microphone and the monitor has a slight buzzing sound to it. This would have caused the microphone to pick up the buzzing sound, thus annoying you even more. I adapted to moving the monitor to the side, this way I have notes but the audio is somewhat clear.

Basically it was just a video for you to show your face, and explain why you don't like the MMORPGs that have come out since WoW.  Which is just a highly subjective video and I found no value in it.  It was just as valuable as if you had posted your list in a gaming forum and watched it get trolled to death.

I wish you god speed on your quest for subscribers to your channel.

Are not all videos on youtube a way to show off your face? I have played MMO’s since 2000 starting with Asheron’s Call, I have seen the rise and fall of many hyped up MMO’s. This video was my way of stating the trend that I am seeing these MMO companies take that is destroying the genre I love and play most. So, if you found no value in the video, that is fine it is your opinion, just like the whole video was mine.

Don’t forget to subscribe.
Take a look at how many have appeared and quickly fade away because they cannot keep their player base. The come out claiming a 2-5 year plan and a year later turn their backs on it to cash grab. Hell games like wildstar, that will turn into a tabula Rasa in a year is what I'm betting.

If you screw your players to the point they don't pay/play anymore.. then you failed as a mmo company and will soon have a dead game on your hands.

Obviously there are successful mmos out there, I won't discount that, but we see too many trying to start up , grab money and fade to black. That's where I see failure, it is about quick money not the long term investment and players.
I will also be discussing every week a few other opinions on mmorp games. For a good chunk of us veteran gamers who remember when mmos were fun and not filled with bad choices by developers to make a quick buck

Hey guys, I put together this short/ish (if you consider 11 minutes) video on why I think MMO's are failing, and what I personally feel developers need to do to bring them back into the glory days.

There are a lot of opinions on this subject, and some people may not agree with my points, but at the least it is a start.

http://youtu.be/cIgz257r49g

Yea, I feel with stock holders riding the nuts of the developers and rushing bad games just to make a penny that this is a good move. This is just like retail and service industry, the big shareholders are in it for a quick buck and screw the company image and what it stands for.
I love Planetside 2 because every time I die, I know it is because, "That was bullshit" or "he is a hacker" and not that I am bad!

I'm excited about this, recently I did a call to arms for my entire community to return to PS2 and play as NC on Emerald. (We started off as TR over on Connery) I will say, starting at BR1 and going against BR75+ is very interesting. You don't start to get the attachments and loadouts until ~BR25 that make you a somewhat worthy competitor.

Being I played the game for 2 years however, I remember all the old tricks.

But, I digress, I'm excited about this and this will make it much more entertaining for my guys who are leveling up now.

OP- No.

warhammer is an RPG.Borderlands2 is an RPG.Dead Island is an RPG...

overwatch is just a 'League of Ledgends' FPS w/o skins to buy in a shop...

:-?

With your analogy then Hero's of the Storm is an RPG and not a MOBA, since you need to pick skills to level for ingame.

I claimed our castle, got my pretty new mount and armor, land is getting distributed to my guild members, made a HUGE chunk off of collecting taxes (50%, welcome to Calm lands), ran Serpentis, continue to dominate the East faction and business is as usual.

I would have to say, it was a pretty good week. Now for all of the things you posted above? Yes a lot of it sucks, but what do you expect from a FTP cash grab game? People are use to having everything handed to them on a golden platter, and when it actually happens, they complain about it? I hate to break it to EVERYONE but you are the reason this happens.

The average MMO players wants everything now, now, now and now and then when the devs finally give in, corners have been cut things overlooked and a piss poor product is released. Social media is everything now days, and when players blow up a companies social media demanding shit they are pressured to please them from shareholders and higher ups.

So, why the shitty release of Auroria? Why the terrible server stability? Because Trion has been rushed since Alpha/Beta to get people onto Auroria as soon as possible, and they have to get XL games to reverse engineer EVERYTHING to make this Korean MMO as Western as possible. Why the rush? Because  we Western players need everything now, and we aren't willing to wait, oh god no, if you make us wait even 5 minutes more than promised, we will blow up every media outlet you have, cry wolf and even charge back the money we gave you, even though it is our fault that we rushed you and it is a shitty release.

The chests with the Tree's I'll admit ruined the economy pretty bad, that was something that should have never seen light. But, everything else, they did for the players to keep them happy and now it has blown up in their face, do I feel bad for the people quitting? No, honestly, a large chunk of them are the ones who wanted this to happen and now it was delivered poorly and they cannot handle it because they are your typical impatient Western MMO player.

You all knew what you were getting into when you bought items and played the game. Why do you all act surprised? It is not a bad game, just don't play it for a farmville sim, or maybe, just maybe get into a good guild that helps each other out?

Call me a fan boy, but I enjoy my time and experience with Archeage. Do I feel cheated after I bought my way into alpha, beta and what not? Not really, I feel I have got my monies worth and then some. If you hate the game so much, back charge and stop playing, if you enjoy the game, then keep playing, you do not need to spend a dime to get patron status.

ouch... people are mad!!! (I own a castle, I can care less)
