I like grouping, but I do understand that people want to make others group up with them or they can't find people to make a group.  If they make the game play enhanced (like Bookkeeper said) when you group, that is one thing that will help.   I also think that a good Guild system promots grouping.

I like the sound of the player villages that will spring up around Guild Halls.  This will promote joining a guild, and that will promote grouping.

I think that the idea of having challenge in the game that require a group is also a good idea, but not something that you MUST do to go through the game.   This game sounds like they are staying away from linear game play, in which case there won't be any particular adentures that you must do, and therefore, they can have some that require groups without forcing grouping.  I think this is a middle ground that I will like in this game.

Renata, here is that other thread about races.  I bumped it up so you can find it.

yeah, this is one of the longer ones, it was started before they released any info on races at their web site.

I've seen several threads on races (I started a couple)  ;)

I noticed that Archeology was listed.  Does that mean there will be digs?  Or do you just go out and try and find places to dig.  Are you supposed to find specific stuff?

I can just picture an Indiana Jones type adventure!   I hope that's what they mean.  I'd love to go after the Eye of the Dragon, and have some hidden cult guarding the ancient ruins.  Fire up the grand adventure music!

I'm less concerned about how they will code the map than about how it plays.  I'm sure they will work out the technical side of the display method without problem.  What do you other game players prefer?   A map that is a realistic view of the terrain from above, a hand drawn look to the map or just an outline (laid over the top of the regular view)?

Personally, I like an artistic representation with markers for the key elements you find in the world.  I think you should have to find them before they are shown, though it might be cool if you could compare maps with other people and fill in parts that they have, kind of like you copied from their map to yours.  This might promote another kind of player interaction.  What do you think?

I would have to choose a more hand drawn map, but if not, then a realistic map.  I don't like the computer looking 'lines' overlay idea.

Any word on the day/night cycle in CoS?

I guess the word is 'yes', there is a day and night cycle.

But, I could expound more on this issue if you wish.  Day and night is more than just light and dark times in the game, NPCs treat night like it is supposed to be, meaning, most of them go to bed, shops shut down, people go to Taverns and pubs, theives come out to steal, city guards start night patrols, night creatures come put to prey, Caravans stop to camp, etc.

Anyway, hope that answers your question, if not, let me know what else you wanted to know.

NPCs go to bed?  As in, lay down and sleep?   I'm not sure I've seen that before in an MMO, though I wonder why not?  From this description it seems that night will be a very different time in the game, that should add some fun.  I wonder what night creatures they are planning?  Vampires?  (I think I read somewhere that they aren't using standard monster races, so probably not).  But, if not Vampires, I wonder what their night creatures are and what they are like?

To each their own... for me part of the fantasy is playing some race that looks better than I do in real life!   (Not claiming I'm a toad, mind you).  I like the looks of the Verduren, something about the leaves in the hair I guess.  I know, kind of shallow, I should be looking at what they do for me, but I tend to pick the race that I think looks the best.  You can tell I like the Verduren, I stole my avatar picture from the CoS web site

I've been looking over the Waerian race further and though I still like the Verdurens, there are some interesting elements in the Waerians as well.  First, they make great armor and use poisons to enhance their weapons.  I also like the fact that they can exist on land or in water, that could be handy.

I also have to admit that playing an aloof race that thinks they are better than everyone else has it's appeal in role playing.  And, they look cool... exotic.

I'm also interested in seeing the next release of information on another race, hopefully that's coming soon.

Cant really complain about the other companies games while having nothing to show yourself.  /shrug

Yeah, I agree with Bookkeeper.

Let's see, just to clarify, so Acapella75 is saying that because the dev is still developing their game they cannot have an opinioin about what they saw at a trade show?   Hmm, I must have missed the rule book on having an opinion, somewhere in there it must cover developers as a separate group.  Call the opinion police!  There's been an infraction!

So... have you read about the Jenemos race on the www.citadelofsorcery.com website?  I did, and boy is this a strange race.  BAD LUCK!  It seems that this is their primary trait.  At first I was appaled by the idea, that's the LAST thing I want to have so why would I ever play a race that has bad luck?  Or why include one in my group?

But, then I started thinking about the possibilities.  It says that their bad luck strikes their opponents more than themselves or their friends.  Hmm, that could be useful.  I mean, you are facing the big bad evil Liche (if they have those) and he casts a death ray at the party, which backfires and kills him (or all his minions).

Or a squad of bad guys is charging you when the roof caves in on them and wipes out the entire lot.

Or dust gets in all the archers eyes and they can't shoot you.

If bad luck strikes your opponents more than your group, this could be really good.

Then there is the amusement factor.  It says that the bad luck tend to strike in the funniest way possible.  That sounds interesting.  Every fantasy game needs some comedy, and watching your opponent cast a lightning bolt spell that fries all his minions by accident until they are black in face with their hair all stuck out would be funny indeed.

OK, so I might stick a Jenemos in my group, just to see what happens.  What do the rest of you think?

I don't know, I found it interesting enough, but I agree that mostly I am happy to hear about progress because I want to play.  But, while I was there reading the dev log on their web site I checked the Races page and they have released information on the Jenemos!  I'm going to read it over some more and then post a new thread about them in a bit.

Speaking of Verdurans, I'm going to steal a picture of the verduren girl from the cos web site and use it for my picture here, hope they don't mind :)

Thanks for the heads up, I went and checked it out immediately!

The new race detail is up on their web site, the Waerians!   I was curious about them, so that's cool.  I like the look of the Waerian female (though I'm still partial to the Verduren girl).   So, with an entire playable race of underwater dwelling people, I suppose this means that there will be underwater adventures?  Will humans (and other races) be able to go underwater?  I imagine that spell they mentioned, created by the Enchantress, that allows you to breath underwater will be the answer to that.  I can't wait to see these weird buildings and swim around inside them.  Neat stuff.

So... will there be underwater mounts?  Dolphins?  What about underwater enemies?  The Kraken?  (not sure how you spell that).

In the Holiday 2009 MMO team screenshots on their web site I can see all the races (I think).  The Tyven and Jenemos look like they must be up front, no doubt someone said, "Tall guys in front, short guys in back!".  If the last picture is a shot of the MMO Magic team then I count about twenty-six.  And it's about time for info on the next race... hint hint devs.

I'm guessing those are Tyven from the Lore on the game web site.  If I was playing, I'd be that green Verduren girl on the left side.  Can't wait to use that camouflage ability.  :)

After looking over the pictures (thanks for the 'larger view tip') I don't see a female Jenemos in there, or did I just miss her?

I feel i needed to comment here only because i know far too well how much the modern gamer WORRIES about speed leveling.

I think rather than cater to these people and totally ruin the game by having hardcore players outlast the content then complain later,a VERY slow leveling curve is the best way to go.

The ONLY reason anyone would complain about a slow leveling curve is because the game is boring to play, then witch gets back to the point that i would not cater to those who find the game boring to play.

Instead the game should try to offer some very interesting ideas and game play for all levels, making it so that players are intrigued so much at every level, they do not care about how fast they level.

This has been a constant mistake by new games, because people are ONLY concerned about getting to and playing PVP end game, that is and should not be what a RPG MMO is all about.

I could throw out tons of ideas for intriguing level play, but not the post to do it as it would become a VERY large post.

I'm not so sure about super slow leveling.  I do agree though, that if a game had more to it than just getting to the next level of my character, the players would be less concerned about how fast they got to the next level.  That is a grinders mentality and CoS seems like a game being designed to stop the grind and improve the game play.

Still, I would suggest a paced leveling, where you keep getting a level every so often, rather than 20 levels in the first week and then slower and slower.  I've noticed that kind of thing in other games and it drives me nuts.  I would rather have a happy medium between how often I get a level, but have it more paced so that I can keep improving my character along the entire time I play.  This means that initially I would have to have enough skills so that I didn't need to level 20 times in the first week.

I hope they can pull it off too.  I mean, you shouldn't get your hopes up in life, especially about games.  Too often I get excited about a game coming only to be disappointed later.  But... I'm an optimist, therefore I will go once again into the foray and hope that CoS CAN deliver what they say.

Look at the bright side, they are talking about so many improvements to the game play side that if even half of them are achieved this will be a game I want to play.  But, could I hope for ALL of the promises?  Sure, why not?  It's like picking up a toothpick as weapon and heading for the dragon's cave... the same dragon that has killed me twelve times.  But what the hell?  I believe I can take him, and I believe that the CoS team is at least trying to deliver new and better game play.

I'd like the ability to disguise myself as somebody else.  But... not just in looks, where NPCs think I'm one of them and don't attack me.  I could use this to sneak into places that you would otherwise have to fight your way inside.  With the kinds of Quests that Citadel of Sorcery is promising, it seems that this would be a very useful skill.

I mean, if you were sent to assassinate some despot you could disguise yourself as one of his guards.  Or if you were sent to spy on Morphael's war plans, you could enter his lands disguised as one of his creatures.  This sounds like fun.  Now, I think there would have to be ways to see through this disguise, and I think you would have to be able to get better and better at it.  So if you had a low level version you might fool dumb people or monsters, but not smarter ones.  But as you improved the ability you would be harder to detect.
