We dont even know how the classes are designed..

Are they designed for group play (roles) where you need to be grouped to get the buff /speed/heal/protection or whatever.

If not players will group up anyway in very large groups.. probably not even being in a group(ui) just running together.

Personly i hope they design classes with roles with abilities only usable on group members

The roles being:

-Magic Caster(easy killable)

-Cleanser/magic protector/CCer  Caster/rezzer (no damage)

-Melee damage dealer

-Protector/persons blocker/ CCer(knockbacks)  melee player(hard to kill/low damage/protects against melee and arrows)

-Buffer/debuffer/cleanser/healer/rezzer Caster (no damage)

-short range speed/buffer(more powerfull)/healer(more powerfull) /cleanser/resser melee dealer (some damage, harder to kill then normal melee damage dealer)

-ranger(tracker and archer far low damage slow attacks, and average in melee damage. Can also hide and see foodprints of people -> skills, and place or disable traps )

And a solo play class that cant group and only have self buffs)

- assasin ( melee damage dealer but only good in finishing off people that have less then 70% hp (fast).. attacking someone with full health would mean he does almost no damage(except if he is in the shadow world). And can open gates in and out of the shadow world where they will be invisible of people in the normal world, but can see people in normal world)

(ranger can follow an enemy assasin into the shadow world and can stay there for a few minutes. Gates of assasins will always stay open for a few seconds but can only be seen by assasins and rangers)

So a group could excist out of:

2 melee damage dealers and a short range buffer. A debuffer/healer Caster and a normal caster. Being protected by a protecter and a magic protecter. And a ranger for tracking or hiding foodprints and range damage or put down traps for ambushes.

And 2 random class slots to make to groups more different (tactic choise how to fill in other 2 slots)

So 10 man groups

I dont think they can stop it.

People want to play with their friends even if they life on the other side of the world.

I (living in the netherlands- europe) played DAOC on a USA server(Tristan) because friends also played on that server.

I never had lag and group fights were always good. And that was years ago when internet was still bad.. 2 seconds graphic lag isnt unplayable if it isnt a FPS

Also another problem is players have changed. They dont have guild/server pride anymore.. and most will just join the winning team. And for a wvw game this usualy means best 24/7 coverage (HOPE NOT!!!) But realms will recruit for people for off hours. And the top realms will be very crowded even in off hours.

Language difference shouldnt be a problem since EU had tons of different language players on UK servers all the time. Instead of special servers for different languages they better could make better chat channels you can join .. so a channel where you can speak english only, a channel for german , a channel for polish, etc...

Hope they have thought of good systems that deals with problems like:

-off hours/night capping (being outmanned all the time at same hours every day)

-server hopping players changing servers to servers with a winning realm . Making outmanned realms even more outmanned.

Too much reward based on capturing things, rather than for holding them.

If you make the game about recourses.

Holding a keep means you own the land around it. Means the NPCs will gather resources for you(your realm) while you own the keep.

Taking a keep would mean you will have more land so more income of resources. But you first need to spend resources to rebuilding houses so you will get the NPCs.

So if you take a keep spend recourses to rebuild houses, then after you just are done rebuilding you will loose the keep again will mean you lost resources instead of win.

So having a keep is good.. Taking a keep is only good if you can hold it for a while.

And if you make it so keep takes are very large battles(lots of small battles) that took a few hours to get it, people will defintly want to defend it.

I agree with some of your distinctions and points about what would make an RVR game good, but I'm confused what you think Camelot Unchained has done already to ruin themselves from being a good RVR game?

They haven't even started development yet? LOL

Yeah.. I'm not going to say Docares points are invalid, as some actually are good 'suggestions', but this post was written as if CU has been released and we're all playing it.  It's way too early to straight out judge a book that doesn't even have pages yet, let alone a cover.

I think a better topic would have been, "My Thoughts on CU" or something.

Sorry it wasnt my intention to write it like that.

It was more so Mark or someone else of the Camelot unchained would read it and see my warnings and like my ideas how to solve problems of all the other games who tried to make RVR had run into. Or atleast think about them. And maybe change stuff they already anounced like the e leveling system as personal reward/goal.

For example ANET (GW2) never thought about how to design classes for a rvr game. So it wouldnt become a game all about who has the largest group and has best 24/7 coverage. They are now slowly changing it so running in a very large blob isnt the best tactic anymore. But already lots of people stopped because of queues, lag and other zerg problems. And never thought about having a bad goal(ranking where best coverage wins) and lack of personal goal or team/guild goal(personal/guild rankings or temporary rewards etc. They maybe will change some of the problems.

But for example changing the class designs in GW2 so they are more role based will never happen. But would have forced people to work together and work as a group instead of just run along with the zerg(no help of others needed except that they dont out number me). Would have brought more tactics and teamwork gameplay options into the game. So smaller groups could beat bigger groups(and make running in the largest group not best tactic) . So group skills would have determined the ranking of the server. Would have make population difference effect be smaller. Would have spread out players more over all servers so they wouldnt have alsmost dead servers next to to crowded servers with very large queues. Would have removed most of the zergs and groups would spread out more over the zone. And no zergs would mean less culing(rendering) and lag problems.

Pure tanks are a PVE designed class.

War/hero/arms wern't solo classes in DAOC, i think most if not all hib groups had Heros, warriors were very common peelers / could assist on trains, arms same thing. They were basically melee that had option to pull out shield for slam, but less offensive oriented abilities, imo they were perfectly designed PVP tanks.

In a pure RvR game, theres no need for tanks like wow/war...

I thought you ment with WAR(the game WAR: warhammer online) tanks. Not the warrior class.

Daoc was fun because it was a group based game with classes with each a role:

Like a bard would mezz and keep endurance and mana up while being kited by the enemy melee train.

A druid would buff/debuff/heal and root (usualy 2 druids for each group one healer other one buffer) and protect eachother by rooting/healing players if the other one got attacked.

Melee classes to chase after healers and casters to interrupt them and do some damage.

Casters you had debuffers so other casters could deal more damage and blind and mana regen

You had rangers and assasins both with stealth so good solo classes that could scout and give group movement info to the groups.

etc.. but no tanks.

In WAR(the game) every class could do good damage. So all classes were damage dealers. Healers were to busy doing damage to heal.. Tanks charged in first and werent protecters of the week classes. So there werent realy any roles. No teamwork needed. Groups were just large groups of people running together were classes didnt realy matter .. and only doing more dps(or having more people) is the main tactic.

(thats why WAR failed for me -> no teamwork needed... a soloplay game in a large group)

Real tanks(protectors and enemy blockers) that are designed to protect (so a real role you could use in tactics/teamplay strategies) in a RVR games i have never seen yet.(mostly because all games also had PVE, and a class that cant do damage only protect would suck in solo pve.)

They released lot of info already: like no pve leveling or realm points but a level system you level by doing RvR (so still kinda like realm points but for all skills/stats)

So people level while doing RvR, becoming stronger every time you play. So you will get a gap between players where players want to only group with level X) or new players (level 1) being one shotted by level 50 players..

Thats for me a fail.

I rather have seen a system where you stats grow but also drop during your play. So if you play well (killing stuff without getting killed) you will get points but also loosing points while you dont kill anything or even more points if you get killed more then you kill people.. But not playing for a few days would mean you are back to zero. (ofcoure it will grow fast again if you start playing again)And where stats are linked together.. Like getter stronger will mean your agility will drop (skill abilities will trigger slower and your dodges will fail) . Getting more health will mean you will move (run speed during combat) will get less.

DAOC before the zergs(new frontier) groups who did group vs group already didnt want to group with low Realm rank players. Because high realm rank players would get a stat advantage and have access to some very powerfull abilities. So winner between a + Realm rank 8 and a group with < realm rank 5 would 99% of all battles be the group with the high realm ranks. Even if the low realm ranks are better players (so not teamwork/ skill/ luck based)

If they would have make  the realm abilities so it were only real abilities (so removed all the passive stat bonus rewards)  that needed to charge up before you could use it. (like every time u use purge you first need to kill 30 players to recharge it). The gap between new players(or low realm rank new players or alts) and high realm rank players would be much smaller. And groups of higher realm ranked players would have only a small advage (once in a while) over low realm ranked players.

Leveling is for PVE games.

RvR games need rankings , fun battles and sieges. Fighting over land and resources.. recourses you need to build/rebuild/upgrade/replace lots of stuff like keeps/houses for NPCs/gear/weapons/siege weapons/NPCs who will gather resources or help defend etc.. but you could also make it so you need (a special type of resource) for everytime you use a special (most powerfull) ability.

Where resources will be devided to all players who helped defending or conquering a piece of land (will slowly add to your bank while the NPCs or you gather)

Tanks should be like Arms / Warrior / Hero in old DAOC, not tanks in WAR please.

Not things just run around with shield

Daoc didnt had tanks.. or the tanking ability like taunt only worked on mobs.

In RvR they where just i bit harder to kill melee damage dealers.

WAR class design was made for solo play not group play (roles) where  all classes where damage dealer  with a bit of role abilities. So the tanks were damage dealers that were harder to kill and a few protect abilities.

I ment with tanks.. low damage dealers but very hard to kill (very slow movement speed in defence stance ofcourse) so real protectors/blockers

With lots of CC and protect abilities like:

- Grab And Hold:  PBEAO/cone pull towards caster and pin down(cant move for a long time)

- cone push backs (he can use every 5 seconds)

- pbaoe criple for 40 seconds

- single target shield slam/ ability that dazes the target , where target cant use any ability for 20 seconds and is trown back

-Wall: Create a wall for like 60 seconds left and right of the tank no one can pass

-Shield bubble that protects a ground area for missle damage for  a few seconds

- body guard  that protects all grouped players very close to you (tank take damage instead)

So you first need to force the tank into block mode so he cant use any of the above skills. Or move around him and attack them in the back

I know very long CCs but all CCs are cureable (healer /magic protector solo target spells.. or resistant buffs)

A lot of players are waiting for a reay good RvR MMO. And lots of games got hyped because they said to make a game with a very good RvR part. But time after time the developers make the same misstakes over and over again and the games fail in being a good RVR game.

The main mistake: Dont try to make a MMO for all MMORPG players.

You have 3 types of MMORPG(maybe more); PVE MMORPG, RvR MMORPG, PVP MMORPG.

They are all called MMORPG, but they are completly different from eachother. Trying to make a game that has more then one of the types will always fail!

  • A PVE MMORPG is about growing stronger; leveling, getting better gear etc.. and because of that you can do harder dungeons and kill harder bosses, who again drop better gear. So a never ending loop and a game that always need to expand.

Classes in a PVE MMORPG are designed to level solo or/and to do dungeons in a group. So you need classes that do enough damage but also fulfill a role like healer or tank etc..

  • A PVP MMORPG is about doing solo PVP in a PVE world (ganking) or in an instance/arena setup(e-sport) where you are spread out to far to help eachother.

Classes in a PVP MMORPG need to be balanced, each class have to do all roles at the same time.

  • A RvR MMORPG is about group vs group fights in an open world and about conquering more land(resources) and castles.

Classes in a RVR MMORG are designed to do a special role inside of a group. So its more of a teamsport.

  • If you try to combine a PVE game with a RVR game you will have some roles, like the tank and the healer, to be to powerfull.

A healer or a tank in a RVR game arent damage dealers. But in a PVE game people want to be able to farm solo. If a class does to less damage they will complain because they farm slower then other classes.

  • If you make a RvR game where people will become stronger (by leveling, getting better stats, getting better gear or extra abilities they get each each level) there will be a gap between a gap between players that play the game for years and a new player. A gap between alts you just created and a player that plays the game for year.

The gap will become so big that new players/alts will become insta kills for the players that play the game for years. Or these players have a to much of a disadvantage. Making the game not fun for new players, or alts useless. It will turn into groups only looking for players of a certain level.

The winner of a group vs group battle(or teamsport) should be about teamwork, tactic, skill and some luck. Not about who has the best gear, stats or highest level.

  • Because RvR is a group based game with classes/roles that are needed, you want people to create/get on a different classes when needed without having to level one up first.

Its a shame Camelot Unchained started good with only wanting to make a RvR MORPG with PVE, but still ended to fell into the usual trap(s .. will probably become more)

Other mistakes that developers trying to make a RVR MMORPG usualy makes (so also probably Camelot Unchained) are :

  • Goals: a good individuel goal, team goal and realm goal.(A RVR goal: so not leveling, but rankings and personal goals(next to ranking) like for example skills like siege master that has a bar with points from -100 to 100 starting at 0. With on one side(- points) defence siege weapons(like ballista, defence walls, magic shield bubble devices etc) and ond the other side(+points) offensive siege(like trebs, bombs, catapults etc..) . If you use/build offesive siege well you get points, if you use/create defence sieges well you get – points. If you use offensive siege badly you get – points etc. And it will always slowly run to 0 if you dont use it for a long time. But next to skills like siegemaster/tracker/trapper etc.. you could also make skills like Swordmaster.. where you can use more/better skills when you raise(kill people -> getting killed/use other weapons/or not kill anything like x minutes is you loose points). But how higher Swordmaster you get Armor/shieldmaster, Axemaster, Hammermaster,BowMaster (and other weapons) will drop.

  • Combat: interactive and fun -> bots shouldnt be able to play the game(no button smashing)

So melee combat reaction, position and armor type based with a good balance between defence and offence. So like ability you can only use after a block. Or an attack you can only do if you behind someone. Or a type of weapon works better against type x of armor.

Where you can go in a defence mode where you will block/parry/dodge.. chance will raise but you cant do any attacks or run(only turn around -> shieldblock only works for attackers attacking you from infront of you). And the damage you do is determined also by holding in the ability button longer (interrupteble and with cap). Archers most powerfull abilities need to choose a shooting angle and how far (holding button) to shoot arrow(s).. ofcourse with a few seconds minium seconds you need to aim(hold the button). Magic most powerfull abilities need to be created. A mark only the counter class(magic portecter/healer etc) can see, will be shown above the caster and can be disrupted or changed(by mana bolts-> no damage). Or can be blocked by defence spells(shields etc) Spells are created by sending different kind and amounts of mana into the spell.

So instead of fights where people chasing after eachother(offence classes chasing/attacking the healer/caster classes) more a fight where defenders actuely can potect the weaker classes so they dont have to kite all the time. So with block//push backs/CC etc.. So a fight where casters and range are protected by tanks and magic protecters. Melee attackers (and their close combat support) trying to get passed the defenders. And assasins fighting a seperete war in a 2nd dimension (shadow world) to get free access to jump on the wounded targets.

  • Balance: between range and close combat damage, classes(not balance in 1vs1 fights, but in usefullness in all types of combat(open field/siege)), defence and damage abilities etc..

  • Population advantage: Best 24 hour coverage or larger population shouldnt mean a certain win. There should be enough tactics/ways for a smaller force to have a chance to win. And the game should be designed so the population advantage is as small as possible, so realms dont end up in blobbing up in one big army that can beat all. Or servers mass recruiting to have biggest 24 hour coverage.

  • Sieges(attack and defence): shouldnt be booring, and should be a main part of the game. So siege weapons should be fun(not pressing button x every few seconds: but for example a treb where one person need to aim, another one (or more) determine how far the rock will fly,  not releasing at the same time will end up in firing in the wrond direction. While the rest of the group defend the treb. Or a battle ram operated by a whole group where actions need to be synchronised as good as possible to do most damage to the gate -> using a siege should be a group activity).

And battles(small battle/scrimmages) should happen all around/in the keep. Instead of one force standing infront of a gate trying to break the door down and another force standing on the walls above the gate trying to shoot them down.

Taking a keep should take a long time and different groups (atleast 1 hour) with lots of objectives you need to take(with different ways to take it) and hold.

  • Classes: designed to do one role (so not make a class that is better in the same role or can do different roles as good as a class that can only do 1 role) but also fun (not healer wack the moll kinda style: but a healer that has lots of magic protection/heals/cures for all kinda type of attacks, or a buffer that can also debuff and need to choose between the right kinda debuffs or protection buffs during the fight)

  • Roles: designed to be all usefull and fun without getting to overpowered. So for example a class with an assasin role should be able to finish off a weak/wounded target in a sneaky way but should never become a very powerfull in burst melee damage class who also can stealth.

  • Abilities: designed for small and large scale combat, so you cant get killed without able to do anything. So for example a shield for x seconds instead of a shield that blocks x damage.

And for each attack/CC(/and even defence) ability should be a defence or counter ability, so there is a good balance between offence and defence and makes the game interactive.

  • Groups: To avoind making a large blob vs blob(that usualy ends in the tactic having a bigger blob) you want to create a game around groups. So group abilities should be a for group only. The groups shouldnt be to big but also not to small, so you can chose between different kinda good group setups. But groups running together should get disadvantages like a speed debuff. Or being together at a siege should get some kinda disadvantage, so they cant insta kill people because 100 casters target the same target. Like 2 groups attacking same target is abilities failing. Or doing only halve the damage. Or groups can hit also friendly groups by mistake (AOE) if they are to close.

  • Map design: Maps should be big enough/designed so that 2 groups can move passed eachother without they even noticing the enemy group(hills / trees) and scouts(role) are needed. With large keeps/citys where you can also fight inside and far enough from eachother so you cant treb eachother from one keep to the neigbour keep..(trebs should get a very large distance so you need to send a group out of the keep (secret passage) to go destroy it.

Hmm post got a bit big. Sorry

But i am still hoping a company will finaly make a good RvR game before i die or to be to old to play compter games. Its not so hard as long you keep in mind what problems will have each design desission.(like making blobbing up(zerging) the best tactic will end up in the same group with most people always winning and the usual big masses problems (like lag) will happen. Or growing stronger over time, will make the game for starters not fun and to hard to play.)

And sorry for the bad english.

Very nice threat KilKil2, i read most of it in the boss his time (bad bad me!! but i couldnt stop so much good info)

But like you i am an old DAOC player. Our strategy was to keep as much as possible CCed while focus kill stuff. We didnt like AOE to much because it would break CC. I read your group is using alot of AOE damage woudnt this break the CC??

And do you think the sorc will become a better CCer then the spiritmaster in next patch?
