I love the combat and the story but this has to be the worst deicison for a mmorpg, people will get bored in a few months and quit.

Anyways any suggestions? I am always looking for a sub option with good combat and group based content thanks all.

Exp Bonus boost or not!  Too many folks rush to max level in just about any mmorpg.

Glad I could help.

POE is a great game! I have bad luck with drops. Can't wait for Act 4. So many great builds you can run too.

Typical white knight approach, blame the players not the game or the developer.

When a game fails this hard like WS did it's because of the game itself NOT the players. This comes from someone who beta-tested WS with a guild for 6 months, raids included. Who bought the expensive collectors edition, raided Genetic Archives and 4 months into release just had enough and quited allong with some thousand others.

So you made the decision to buy the game, not the developers!

Sounds like it's in fact the player's fault since you couldn't control yourself from purchasing the game. Rather than taking accountability, you will instead blame the developers for opening your wallet.

Well I have seen a lot of your posts and I know you always valiantly defend WS and often in a offensive way.

However...

Technically you just said he made a big mistake by buying the game.

Is this pointless mockery really the way you want to defend your favorite MMO?

I'm a advocate for any MMO! It never started with WS and never ended with WS!

I like triathlons, therefore what's wrong with other runners, cyclists or swimmers that don't?

Cyclist and runners could have bad shoulders. Swimmers could have bad knees or bad backs.

You should start a Play Healthy MMORPG fitness blog!

Wildstar with all of its little flaws is such a great game.. and the only potential it is lacking is the support of a fan base that would throttle this game into some really great online experiences for people...

I see a quality game thats way ahead of its time as far as progression mmorpg experiences go... this game has so much potential and the only thing holding it back is a loyal fan base of players...

People are so easily deterred by the negative opinions of others they often miss out on great opportunities that are right in their face.

This game blows WoWs D$%# out of the %@^!ing Water people... wtf is WRONG WITH YOU GOSH ( Face palm ) lol .. Ive played wow since vanilla and I just cant understand how people are still sold on that mindless grind for expired glory... - meaning everytime you think you've attained something or achieved something great something even GREATER comes out and yet again you are left doing the SAME repetitive bee worker job.

Rant over

PS - NCSOFT : Dont give up on this game yet...

Simple answer OP.  Linear quest grind.

I remember logging into closed beta and the first thing I saw was a hovering gold exclamation mark and my hype for the game crashed harder than than the rocket that was in ruins around my character.

in 2014, and 2015, for that matter.  If you have traditional WoW style quest based leveling you're doing it wrong.  The vast majority of MMO players have done that to death and are ready for something new.

Also, the dissonance of having a graphic style that caters to 10 year-olds with endgame PvE built around hardcore raiding meant to appeal to people in their 30s and 40s didn't help at all.

You mean like this? It seems to have worked for millions. (I'm having fun with images today.)

Wildstar is not simply one of many cartoony MMOs that has somehow unjustly been singled out criticism, it is by far the most cartoony MMO that was not a niche game aimed at children or anime fans.  They outcartooned WoW by a lot, if Wildstar had simply drawn the line at a WoW level of cartoonishness I think it would have been far more successful.

Look at the 2004 and 2014 WoW human faces as compared to the Wildstar human faces, both are cartoonish but the WoW faces at least kind-of look like a human.

You made such a valid point there!

Poor Agreements and Excuses for pretty much every game:

Treadmill: Pretty much any hobby! You just pick your poison. Especially if you are so passionate about it. You don’t even have to be on the same level as everyone else. You keep playing Solitaire because you love it and you don’t care how repetitive it is. VIDEO GAMES are REPETITIVE!

Cartoonish: Every video game is a FUCKING cartoon, some more than others.

Performance: I run AMD, yes, it sucks that the performance was bad, but Drop 5 performance for a lot folks has improved including myself.

Poor Marketing: My ass! The game delivered exactly what they said. Many of you made shitty excuse of not getting past level 5. You missed out on getting your ass kicked in your 1st dungeon at level 20 and not just from a 40man raid.

Quest Hub/Grindfest: The worst argument for just about any MMORPG! It’s about character development/progression. A feature that’s standard in any RPG.  Omg, where is my fucking INSTANT button to max level my character, skill, or crafting. Oh man I got gotta farm mats for potions and food too. The list is endless as many games add various features to keep you occupied. Great example like not being a fan of Jumping puzzles but you will gladly reap the rewards as long as there is a Mesmer around.

Telegraphs: You want to be HARDCORE? You can turn it off. When you do, please stream it so many of us can watch.

Doesn’t Play like TERA: In TERA you can create a 1 button macro that does all the work for you, requires very little thinking. You just need to remember to dodge. Wildstar has DASH, same fucking concept. Just like Neverwinter, Guild Wars 2, and Vinditus.

Linear: It’s a THEMEPARK, yes your hand is held even with that it’s still not enough for many of you! You don’t need to follow one HUB to another, you can easily stray away and explore each map. Like so many you need guidance a direction rather than try to figure it out. And so many are so hell bent about trying to reach max level they miss everything else in the game.

Comparing it to WoW: Why the hell do people still compare games to WoW that was released in November 2004. Wildstar has very little content in almost 1 year compared to over 10yrs of patches, updates, and expansions. You folks expect EVERY new game to have all the bells and whistles.

Otherland is the only MMORPG on the list, and therefore the only game on the list that I'm interested in.

Aren't Skyforge and Black Desert MMORPGs?

Skyforge is lobby-based. So technically no. Black Desert is though, yes. But also a Korean Sandbox, almost identical "pay to advance/win" system as Archage, so maybe some people dont see it as such? idk.

If you are saying Lobby based games aren't MMOs you ended most of the games here.

Back when my ONLY options were Diablo or Ultima Online guess what we called both of them?

MMOs.

Sorry.

No, "we" didn't, we called UO an MMORPG, and Diablo 2 a multiplayer online game.

We knew the difference.

That's like saying MUD wasn't an MMORPG!

First, this post is heavy image "In Your Face Evidence", and second, adding to my previous post...

That's the problem many had with Wildstar.  Judging the game about some decisions that have been for ages in other MMO.  What they only do, is making it a standard mechanic.   But again, many encounters in many MMO around use them too.  So technically have been a standard mechanic in the industry.

...

/images/

...

Now... Can you do that in all the others?.... Nah!

The difference is that other games have better diversity when it comes to abilities.

Most MMOs have 1: cleave-like AOEs, 2: mouse targeted AOEs, and 3: tab targeted abilities.

Wildstar effectively removed the third type of abilities and called it innovation where it made the classes feel less diverse. Combat fells like : cone cleave, square cleave, rectangle cleave, circle cleave.

On top of that single target abilities help a lot in combats with 20+ players around. Its easier  to see what each friend/enemy is exactly doing and keep track of the situation.

In the end all that is irrelevant - the era of  shallow and simplistic gameplay MMOs and single player in a crowd (mainly found in modern themeparks) is finally gone.

Innovation is not an ability, it's something new or making something more effective!

I'm trying to keep it simple here (on a gaming forum) to make what should be an obvious point. Do I really need to get into specifics (Serpentes and Lacertilia) to accomplish that. No. That would be pointless for this discussion. I'm sure you saw the parallel but you'd prefer to ignore it. I'm talking about "classifying" video games and how they fall into already established genres. The work has been done, your input and imagination is not needed.

Touche nonetheless, but all you're doing is deflecting.

You don't want to classify Snakes and Lizards! Which in fact has their own classification. Yes Sherlock, that's understood. I should have worded it better and I should have anticipated you playing the Google to the rescue card. Move forward and deal, or keep running.

But you do want to classify video games! They already are; you, however, are a victim of marketing. Something that the masses tend to experience. Which you are clearly not doing! Done like dinner; which by the way can be more than a distraction while making posts while making am awesome dinner. Hence zee slip.

Pouring hot water into Top Ramen is not awesome nor is it healthy for you!

Lol. Nah, I haven't eaten noodles since I was twelve. Crap fucking food. I did however grilll some seriously quality baby back ribs from St. Lawrence Market alongside some asparagus and baked PEI potatoes with real butter. Family and friends were muy impresionado. Damn good shit!

Have a nice night with your Ramen and water though, and keep running. You're going to need the cardio, Coolio.

Sounds Delicious! That meat better have follow off the bone and the asparagus better have been crispy to the bite! I'm more of a fingerlings, but PEI are very tasty!

I'm making Japanese Turkey Meatballs over pan fried soba! I already do mini triathlons every other day!

and there reason why this has not happened yet ... few people are like you. Why would people want bigger games when there are so many to choose from?

And why would I be willing to pay anything when free is fun enough?

Don't folks already sorta do that? Funding Kick starters in large amounts, or purchasing expensive founders.

One game wouldn't exist without the other!

So what. That's how new things appear, it's called evolution. That's one way it works.

Did you know that pythons and boa constrictors have tiny leg stumps called Vestigial legs. These legs used to be much larger and believe it or not 100 million years ago, these "snakes" were actually lizards. They may have been lizards but they are no longer lizards; they are something "new" called snakes. These particular lizards evolved. The two are not the same because one originated from the other. Classifying them as the same thing would be quite false and very foolish.

It's no different with MOBAs and MMORTSs.

If you'd like any more info on evolution feel free to ask; my door is always open.

He's 100% correct and you clearly have never played an MMORTS. Here's an example of one: Link

And here's a video to help you further.

Best of luck to you.

Does World of Warcraft and Everquest play different than Guild Wars 2? Absolutely!!!! Are they all MMORPG? Yes, very much so!

Yes they are, congratulations. You have displayed a serious talent of detective work.

A MOBA is still not an MMORTS. I have played many hours of both and they are most certainly different genres.

Multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA), also known as action real-time strategy (ARTS), originated as a subgenre of the real-time strategy (RTS) genre of video games, in which a player controls a single character in one of two teams. The objective is to destroy the opposing team's main structure with the assistance of periodically spawned computer-controlled units that march forward along set paths. Player characters typically have various abilities and advantages that improve over the course of a game and that contribute to a team's overall strategy. A fusion of action games and real-time strategy games, players usually do not construct either buildings or units.

Massively multiplayer online real-time strategy game (MMORTS) mixes the genres of real-time strategy and Massively multiplayer online games, possibly in the form of web browser-based games, in which a very large number of players interact with one another within a virtual world.[1] Players often assume the role of a general, king, or other type of figurehead leading an army into battle while maintaining the resources needed for such warfare. The titles are often based in a sci-fi or fantasy universe and are distinguished from single or small-scale multiplayer RTSes by the number of players and common use of a persistent world, generally hosted by the game's publisher, which continues to evolve even when the player is offline.

If I wanted to play an MMORTS and what I got was a MOBA that was being sold as an MMORTS, I wouldn't be getting what was advertised. This is just one example of why we call things what they are, why we classify things in Human civilization; otherwise we would call eveything "games", not "video games", just games. Which would make so much fucking sense.
