Yeah but western mmos give you more variety in terms of armor, weapons, items, skills (more at earlier levels), quests, instances, mobs, areas, and a faster leveling rate which helps the grind feel less grindy (though it's still a grind at the core).

Blizzard cinematics give me a serious stiffy, especially the BC one. But if a game can make something just as cool using the ingame graphics, that's better advertisement because you're showing ingame stuff (even if it's at cool camera angles with epic music)

trust me, not only the mechanics feel "broken" (brutal), just wait until you sucked into all the lies and deceit that happens. Having the best of friends turn on you in a dime just for some gear or adena, the game lends itself to some of the harshes elements known to a player, that is the human mind.

once again EvE also rewards griefers, and the rewards are less random. You guys oughta try EvE sometime, if you can look past the fact that the whole game takes place in spaceships in space

To be fair, there was Dragon Raja, which was a blend between EQ and UO in the respects that skills gained for each class by use, improving proficiency with abilities and spells. And it had a great crafting system. Basically, almost everything was craftable (weapons, armor, clothes, furniture and etc). What killed it was that it was one of the few that had a monthly fee. Since then, it's gone through several iterations where the monthly fee was removed and the cash shop was adopted. I think only two companies have any sort of DR server right now, but nothing like it was back in 2000.

Lineage 2 usually has incredibly well made trailers, I'm also fond of EvE online trailers as well

If being a "strong" "mmorpg player" means waking up every hour to do something that seems broken and can be easily fixed, then I'll gladly pick "weak". I do like challenge in my games, but pressing a button every half hour for a year isn't something I would be terribly proud of

and alternatively you can achieve that same reward if you download a botting program or drop some cash on adenas, and considering how bot infested the game is I wouldn't say that it's an uncommon thing

but different strokes different folks I guess, each to his own

Well, the whole game is based on a layer of grueling hardship. Granted, this is bad game design. But the core of the game... what it REALLY is about, is the interaction between clans and alliances. I really have to say, after trying a slew of games, I have not yet seen a game that really binds players, sets enemies and enmities, creates lasting friendships, unifies players toward common goals or disrupting common goals, more than Lineage II. At least the games that I have tried.

 

It's just that you really have to be dedicated.

I can see the playerbase immaturity to an certain extent with F2P asian mmos. I mean it's an MMO, it has anime inspired aesthetics that make the weaboos go wild, and it's FREE. So there's that attraction there to the weaboo or stupid kid, no doubt. but with most online games, the higher level you go, the people seem to get less and less stupid, so it's not that bad really if you're that dedicated.

But man, back in my darker days when I was obsessed with maplestory for a month, I woulda killed to have a monthly fee. Would have weeded out more idiots, and the cashshop items would be implemented into the game. That would have been nice...not having to deal with farming spot squabbles, KSing, and the godawful PQ system

Hopefully the impact of WoW will make asian MMO makers start to focus more on quests and variety in the grinding. With that and beautiful graphics like L2 and RFonline, it would be a winner amongst the crap out right now

If you die, you have to  make a new character, BUT, the new character will be slightly more powerful than before. This will give  people who keep getting killed a reason to keep on playing. They will be getting stronger and stronger.

So even if you have some large guild dominating the server, eventually everyone else will be so much more powerful that they will die.

Of course if you die at level one, you wont get any more powerful. It will be based on how high a level you get.
