Extra Credits: Choice and Conflict

Good video since people are throwing the "choice" word around a lot, figured these would be nice and relevant.

Extra Credits: Depth vs Complexity
Extra Credits: Beyond Fun

It should not only be Risk vs Reward, but Risk vs. Reward vs. Consequence for your actions. I guess this would open such a game to a wider audience, since griefing would have consequences for the griefer.

Consequences (harsh death penalties, full loot, Law / Criminal system (like UO), Reptation /
Karma system (like UO), item decay / degradation, etc.) should be part of the "Risk".

If Consequence is not part of the Risk than that is a design flaw and the game wasn't built
from the ground up with PvP in mind. Or that is how I feel about it at least.

If it is built properly with these things in mind it should be part of the Risk, this is
where the disconnect is a lot of the times and why a lot of these MMOs with "supposed"
FFA or OW PvP fail so hard and feel like they were a complete "after thought" and
completely "tacked on" to the game after the fact to extend the gameplay and increase
the replayability.

Like Ramanadjinn, whisperwynd, and others have said in this thread, there hasn't really been
a game that has built from the ground up with OW / FFA PvP and Full Looting and things like
that in mind. These games don't integrate and intertwine these systems into the "Core" of
the game to make them a integrable and essential part of the game.

If these games were built properly with PvP in mind from the start of development then PvP
should be so important to the game to the point that if you were to "turn it off" or remove
it, it would totally destroy the game and make it completely dysfunctional.

Not having PvP (or full looting, or whatever) should literally break the game, and that is
something Hardcore PvP people are missing and wishing a Developer would come a long and fill
that niche.

These things can really improve games, PvE, communities, roleplaying, ingame economies,
sandboxes, etc. etc.

Metagaming, Min / Maxing, Buffboting, Multiboxing, etc; are all examples of things PvE
players and Raiders incorporated into MMOs. With your DPS meters and gear scores, and all
these other crazy UIs and mods needed to play the PvE / Raiding game. That and Gold
sellers / Leveling services / Boting / etc. etc.

Most MMOs aren't made with PvP in mind (it is a tacked on after thought) and if you remove
PvP completely it wouldn't really damage or change the game much, especially for PvEers.
Where as if you remove PvE from Most MMOs you have nothing but a shallow battleground
(instanced BG / Arena) game, with maybe some OW PvP but not what you would get / want /
or expect from a game built from the ground up with PvP in mind, as a foundation that can't
be removed.

Of course this is all my opinion but I think most of it holds true, I was a anti-PK my whole
time in UO and it was great fun till it got "ruined", I enjoyed the sense of danger and
adventure around every turn. I miss the full looting, nothing in the game was irreplaceable
and it did nothing but help feed and sustain the crafters and the player run economy and
allowed for people to live out non-combat and RP lives within the game world of the MMO.

The people should be able to defend and police themselves, that was part of the fun and
function of my Guild (or at least the "Paladin" Division I was apart of). They just need
to be given the tools.

I think that is what the OP and the PvP supporters of this thread are striving for and I am
right with them in that regard. I agree with the OP for the most part, I am part of the PvP
"camp" with Bidwood, Ramanadjinn, Holophonist, CactusJack, Apraxis, and company.

I miss the "good old days" of UO before the Trammel / Felucca debacle. It seems there are
some good upcoming games for our "camp", DayZ Standalone (the mod is good too),
Trials of Ascension, Camelot UnchainedPathfinder OnlineDivergence OnlineThe Repopulation, Archeage, and a few others.

I can't wait to play a MMO with good PvP again. DAoC was great back in the day as well, I
also enjoyed Warhammer for a short time as well. The list of MMOs with actual good PvP
isn't very long unforunately, it is all "tacked on" and BG / Area (instanced) stuff.

With the recent post by Mark Kern regarding how the casualization or MMO's has essentially ruined the genre got me to thinking about what other aspects have contributed to the "ruining" of mmo's.

Personally i believe the mentality of many of the players that because they pay $15 they should have access to every bit of content in the mmo is both absurd, and heavily contributed to the current state of the genre.

We use the example of a gymnasium, but i think using an example of a themepark is a better idea.

Lets take Disneyworld.  Most people schedule for multiple days when they vacation or visit.  They know that buying entrance for the themepark for one day is not enough time to experience all the things they want to do.  The average person knows that they're paying for ACCESS to all of the themeparks content, but that with their limited time, they are only able to partake in parts of it.   So, they know if they spend 2 hours watching the mickey mouse play with their kids, and then spend 2 hours on roller coaster, that they may not have time to go to the waterpark, etc.

So, normal sane people understood in the early days of MMO's that it was the same way.  You didnt get to raid if you didnt want to spend 4-6 hours online at once.  Nobody begrudged the people who could.  They simply went on and did whatever else was available that was fun.  Whether that was crafting, running a dungeon, exploring, whatever.  Nobody begrudged the crafter who chose to spend his hours investing into crafting at the detriment of his character leveling, or raiding, etc.

Instead, because of the influx of these content locusts casual players, who come in like a flock of squawking birds demanding that everything cater to them.  We have ourselves in our current situation.

You complaining that leveling takes too long because you only have 2 hours a week to play is the same as expecting disney world to make their rollercoasters 1/3 of the length, so it only takes you 5 minutes to get through the rollercoaster instead of 15 minutes.  Or asking them to cut out important parts of the Mickey Mouse show, so its only 20 minutes instead of an hour long.  Its entitled and selfish, and it ruins the purity of the original material.  It dumbs it down, makes it worthless.  Its like trying to cram the entire lord of the rings into a 200 page book because you "dont have the time" to read the whole thing.

So instead of being like normal, sane people, who take 2 or 3 months maybe to read through the whole lord of the rings, you instead feel like the author should be obligated to cut it down to make it more palatable for you.  In the process the thing is ruined.

Thank You!!!!  +1 and <3

Can't think of any that are "out" right now, I can think of a handful that are in development and should be out "soonish".  They aren't exactly what your describing but they are similar.

Trials of Ascension,

The Repopulation,

Archeage,

Pathfinder Online,

that is all that is coming to my at the moment, just off the top of my head.

And to think when I started playing MMORPGs, $30 got me the basic game and $15/month got me EVERYTHING in the game.

This ^^^^    All day this...  Much rather buy the game out forthright and pay monthly and get access to the FULL game, Everything, rather than this nickel and dime, "a la carte" bullcrap.

So YUP, I support this message from the OP! lol

Wrote about it a bit here myself.

http://poisonman.wordpress.com/

It is pretty ridiculous.  Game is fun though, I am really liking the combat.

DayZ Standalone

Archeage

Camelot Unchained

Trials of Ascension

The Repopulation

Divergence Online

My thoughts on things....

I'm still playing and enjoying the game for free, the combat is really fun, but it is clearly obvious what this payment "model" and end game is all about.  I would much rather the game be sub based instead of the disgusting mess it is now.

I'm a big PvPer but I don't have a whole lot of hope for this game in that department though, it is a D&D game which was pretty much made for PvE / Co-Op / Dungeon Running / Raiding, and that is completely fine, in fact it is awesome, the Foundry is fantastic.

So I honestly wasn't expecting much in the PvP department and I am not really expecting much balance happening there because this game is built off the D&D ruleset which was never really designed with PvP in mind and they should stick with that.

It will make for a excellent PvE based MMO, but IMHO it could have been far better as a sub game or at least with a better payment model then the appalling place the store / micro transactions are at now.

They were discussing innovative ideas for "combat rez" in CU on the Opposition Podcast last night.  The discussion was interesting, but I think it was clear that MJ was against any kind of easy return to battle after death.  Death must sting and have some real penalty and so forth...

I've always interpreted what Mark has said about easy returns to battle to be referring to the porting back to keeps after releasing that was possible in DAOC's NF not to rezzing during battles. In fact he has specifically mentioned the ability to burn bodies of fallen enemies to prevent them from being rezzed which implies that if you don't burn them, they can be rezzed. Anyway enough about that. There will be plenty of time to debate specific game features when the official forums go up.

I see where you're coming from, but I also interpreted that way as well.  But I also got the feeling that there will be no in combat rezzing, or that rezzing will be a long cast and very interruptable to the point that it pretty much can't be used in combat unless you are super lucky or being ignored.

Basically sounds like he wants most of the rezzing to be done after combat pretty much by just the winning side.

Which makes perfect sense and I'm totally on board with this.

I really like this link:  http://cu-additional-pledge.herokuapp.com/

We're down $26 more dollars per backer to get this thing funded.  Really isn't that much of a strech.  Just buy a few additional founders points.

$10 – Receive an additional 10 FPs
$25 – Receive an additional 30 FPs
$50 – Receive an additional 70 FPs
$100 - Receive an additional 155 FPs

I find the current list of items in the Founder's Exchange to be very lackluster. There really isn't one item in there that I can't easily live without. I understand Mark is going to have an update soon announcing a revamp of the FP store, so hopefully there will be some new things that make FPs more valuable and will make me think about donating above my selected reward tier.

WTF?

Is this for real?

So, less than 48 hours from KS close off Mark Jacobs is going to either:

Completely 'change the rules' - potentially pulling the rug out from under those who have already pledged?

OR change the value of items / add / subtract items when many people might not have time to react?

Not to mention - this from a man who claimed to dislike "in game" microtransactions stores in the first place?

Where did he say this?

Link and quote please?

All these things will continue to be available for at least another 30 days during the paypal funding period (for international people unable to use kickstarter or people without credit cards).

All you need to do is use the same email address.

You are over reacting.

It is funny how many MMOs have failed and had to shut down their servers, and close their doors in the last 10 years.

Yet DAoC and War are both still running and making a profit via subscriptions, otherwise they wouldn't still be running, obviously.

Just saying, facts is facts.

Razer gave CU a shoutout on FB and Twitter, everyone should Like / Share and Retweet that shiz!

https://www.facebook.com/razer

https://twitter.com/Razer/status/328193476611158016

All I gotta say is this:

http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm

90% or more of the MMOs on that list have PvE in them, is there a reason this one NEEDS it and can't you get your fill of PvE from one of the many PvE based MMOs that are out on the market right now?

There is only a absurd amount of them.... *rolls eyes*

Everyone supporting this project wants a RvR only MMO.

^^^^^

This GUY!!!!   *Hugs*  <3

Crafters are going to be the heart and soul of the game!

Everything will be buildable in game, the whole world is going to be mostly empty other than the 3 main safe cities.

Its going to be a lot like legos / minecraft like building, sounds like a lot of fun.

Well unlike DAoC and UO where all the houses in game were pre made and the same, you can pretty much do anything in your imagination like minecraft

I imagine people building houses, buildings, castles, towns, walls, houses, etc  People are going to build everything, it is going to be awesome.

I've still never played minecraft but the pics and videos i see from it are insane, the work / time / detail people put into that stuff, the finished products are fucking nasty most of the time.

I think that shit will make the fighting way more epic then the frontier in DAoC could ever be due to people's connection to things, not just because they captured / own / spend alot of time around it, but because they built it.

I just think we are going to see some amazing things, and once you build something amazing you can make a blueprint of it so if someone does destroy if you can rebuild it quickly, it will be EPIC!

I know I've mentioned it before in other threads but it falls right in line with Mark's vision for a BSC idea.

I could imagine a cool system using disguises and / with a possible short duration "invisible" stealth (like warhammer) if needed or desired, would have a kinda assassin's creed like feel to it or something like that.

Also sounds like they are planning a different camouflage system built along side of it as well, which can be influenced by distance, shadow , decor, movement, etc.

Which could be used for both stealther / assassin type classes as well as archer / scout like classes.

Would make it more tactical and "realistic", could be a cool system, where you become invisible not because no one can see you but because your blending in with the environment, disguised, or just not being noticed till the time you strike.

But of course there is always the meta game, where if your disguise or stealth skills aren't high enough certain classes like enemy assassin / archer classes or possibly other classes with a high enough "perception" can see through it. I'm sure there is a lot of fun things you can do here.

It would be a lot of deception and misdirection, could be interesting.

It would be more like Social Cloaking /  Disguise Mastery instead of Invisibility. So you would be more like Batman / Assassin's Creed instead of being like the Predator.

Invisible steath is the solution in just about every MMO, wouldn't it be nice to try something new, different, unique, etc.. ?

Can't wait to see what Mark actually came up with though, hope he annouces it soon!

There really is tons of different things you could do other than the same old, same old, invisible stealth from every other MMO out there.

You knew I wouldn't be able to resist this thread :-P
