Well, if they do it like FFXI did it, this is how it's going to play:

The game itself will be open world, where people can explore the huge areas and do quests and missions with each other.

The storyline portions of the game, however, will feature fights that take place in the open world, areas that are open world yet you need to progress the storyline up to certain point to "unlock" said area, and (mostly) instanced battle "events" where you fight some bigger boss in a battleground. 

Since these battles will only happen in a small area and compared to rest of the missions they're not that numerous, we can expect that the majority of the story will take place in the open world, not in an instance.

I think it will be more plot-orientated than you are suggesting and more solo friendly. There will also be significant instancing and cut-scenes used to make the game more immersive, and less of the scrum of players that tends to occur in open world sandboxes after launch. The battle, Guildleves, and Free growth system will be major features, and will encourage grouping, but not make it impossible to solo either for most of your game time. The world will be large though, and instancing will prevent it getting cramped at key game spots. Great graphics will enhance the immersion, along with the cut scenes. If you don't like the current generation of Japanese RPGs that are coming out then this mmo may not be for you. I do though think it will be  blast.

Pools of Radiance for C64 was my first as well!

...but, Ultima 7 (both parts) and Elder Scrolls: Arena were probably the games I logged most time into before I started playing MUDs online, which lead to MMORPGs eventually.

Ultima 6/7 and Elder scrolls were both blasts in my past. Dungeon Master was a cool game way back when. Final Fantasy series, Fallout, and King's quest would be worthwhile mentions here too. I wish that now we are in the are of 32-bit ARM portables such as the iPhone and iPad that some game developers might bring back these as remade retro-RPG classics. They would clear up on the app stores I think!

Because hack-n-slash is a) so successful (and more so than the story-based RPGs) and because it is born out of traditional RPG (take the stat, the accounting, the equip, ramp up the combat and discard the story), it has sometimes take over the RPG name.

When the word RPG is used, it now often means hack-n-slash.

Diablo does, though, look very dated now. Part of the reason I enjoyed Dragon Age so much was that along with the immersive elements it could be played quite neatly as a party-based hack and slasher through its many dungeons. However, the hack-and-slash of Dragon Age is not grinding since you are clearing dungeons, not re-clearing them for extra xp. WoW on release was a combo of quest and grinding, I can remember myself and others grinding on mobs on release, but now it has become a non-grind level game, but it's an old mmo now and after cataclysm, preferably on a brand new server to get the levelling feeling again as a meaningful exercise, it will be gone I think. That really leaves FF XIV and SW:TOR as the mmo games to wait for in terms of a long-term gaming commitment. I think both will be heavy on the plot and immersion, that means very little grind, but for the good I think.

As collector editions of games go there is indeed a lot there. I think, though, after the way Blizzard have handled the Starcraft franchise, basically treating it as a second tier game by delaying it for so long and always putting WoW before it (their cash cow) a better question for a topic is does anyone really care about Starcraft II still? Sure it is in beta and will be a fun multi-player strategy game, but after all the delays it looks a bit past its prime already and offers nothing particularly new. And on another note I think the Blizzard method will kill Diablo III too.

Okay, maybe I'm just being anal here but I wanted to point out that by looking at the spells on the official website, it looks like Thaumaturge is the one that focuses on buffing and debuffing and Conjurer is damaging and healing.

Did you read the same web page as I did? They have different spells, but both have ones that will restore a targets HP.

 

Also, even though that is what we've seen so far, the official website says thaumaturgy "can be a force of terrifying destruction" and that "Thaumaturges are unparalleled in their powers of destruction eclipsing even the Disciples of War".  On top of that, Thaumaturges can heal as well by sacrificing their own HP.

Anyway, my point is that I don't think Conjurer will be as capable of nuking (as far as damage is concerned) as some people think.

Also, don't forget that although you can possibly sub abilities, it appears there will be no subjob, so it makes sense to give the classes a bit more variety.  At this point, its probably best not to try to think of this game as being the same as FFXI.  Some things will be similar but I am confident it will be a much different game.

But for the record, I would love to see some more DoM classes added.  Maybe some type of crowd controller?  That doesn't seem to be covered yet.  But I don't know if that would open up a whole new can of worms...

FF XIII initially really is story and an interesting battle system, if you got into that it's a great game and the linearity doesn't matter. Players looking for the RPG non-linear elements can get them eventually if the persevere, but you are right it is later on. Really the game is a package if you get all the layers it is a great experience of a game, if you only got some of them you might be worrying about FF XIV, which is mmo genre, so really a totally different game play experience. Maybe Japanese players are just a more patient lot than Western players, food for thought in the design of these games.

Not certain if they can do that as I don't think Bioware own the rights to Baldur's Gate at the moment. I think a lot for Bioware and MMO will depend on SW:TOR. If SW:TOR is a big hit they will concentrate on that for the next years, if it fails they will probably put MMO on hold from that point. I cannot honestly see SW:TOR failing, so to be honest I cannot see Bioware making a Dragon Age MMO. I think Blizzard are more likely to try to do something here as a WoW replacement game, they need to move their horde of players over to some new next generation mmo franchise in next years, and a non-kiddy cartoon WoW, what AoC could have been if it hadn't been buggy mess on launch, may be the best you will get, as Blizzard like to borrow ideas from whatever is  successful in gaming  for their own games.

Honestly this should have just been released as as some cheaply made anime movie.  As a game it was such a total let down.

 

That said, I had to go back again and rewatch all the dev videos for FF XIII listening to them talk about how great it was and how excited they all are with the game they had made. I got a twitch in my left eye.  I quickly started watching the dev videos for XIV and my twitch started getting worse.

 

After an experience like this it makes me just have to ask...  Have game developers totally and completely lost their minds.

 

I think you really are talking about Dragon Age Origins when you say anime movie.

To be honest I simply think they are trolling. Mass Effect and Dragon Age are also RPG with a lot of movie-like cut scenes. What I think that tells us is that in terms of the gaming RPG market today is that FF XIII is spot on in approach. The story is very much one from the Japanese tastes, but I think given the game sales a lot of Western players dig the game too. I think a lot of the early game concentrates on the battle system (which is quite intricate and fun if played well), character development and story. However, the game does open up later on and gives you a sandbox open world RPG feel too, there is a transition between linear and open world. I think FF XIV which uses Crystal Tools too will be a visual plot-driven treat of a MMO, and a real blast for us...even the WoW guys should put their purple chase on hold for a month or two and try it when it comes out on retail launch.

 I think for the state-of-the-art console and PC paid gaming market the trend to immersive story-driven games, that have linear and non linear gameplay elements will continue (FF XIV and SWTOR). I think older style mmo would work best on platforms such as iPad/iPhone or on computer web browsers, possible might work on things like PSN too.

I remember ruining the last year of my school when I was 15 because I was addicted to Planetside. It was all I ever talked about and I was so hooked on that game but, SOE then released that stupid lackluster expansion and killed it off in 2004 with BFRs. I was also addicted to SWG in 2003 but every patch SOE made seemed to make it worse. For me SWG was dead in 2004 because they kept messing with Jedi and ignoring the rest of the game. I was addicted to EVE Online as well but again CCP are clueless and can't seem to develop a UI that is fun to use. the game was so backwards and needed so much doing to it that it still hasn't gotten today. Instead they decided to ignore key features that I wanted and the fleet UI is still a cluster ****. Now it's just a mess of throw Capital ships at everything to win and the rules feel so inconsistent, where the devs help out their fave corps just because they are well known. Also things like one person being able to close a whole alliance is just so stupid... the game is just a mess because again CCP don't have a clue.

If you go back even further there was Everquest and Dark Age of Camelot and Ultima Online. All killed off again by stupid patches the community didn't want and it just seems the same thing is cropping up again and again. Just stupid developers who try to please everyone and don't think of the world it affects.

Finally WoW came along in 2004 and in 2005 it was killed off by Blizzard who decided to treat it like an Online game, rather than a virtual world. They released Battlegrounds and then all the great world PVP died with it. Suddenly the world was empty because everyone was in these instanced PVP zones. It got even worse when they let you enter them from anywhere and now they let you enter dungeons from anywhere with that Auto group tool. The game is just so easy though you can't feel special and all my friends have left because of that. They spent months getting their purples and now anyone can get them... not the way it should be.

If you played WoW at launch it became boring by about mid-2005, and yes they did change the game in such a way as to lose a lot of its early charm.  It is though quite fun to play the content for a couple of months after each new expansion, though, Blizzard do put a lot of effort into that, but really beyond the initial few months much of the game becomes waiting for patching in new gear and a solitary new  raid dungeon, and of course new gear for the battlegrounds.

 So I've been waiting ever since WoW got killed off by Blizzard for a new MMO and nothing worthwhile has come. None of them feel like MMOs and they've just been dumbed down for casuals who don't even want to play them. MMOs should be online worlds and all they've become is towns with instances all around them, like Diablo.

You have been waiting a long time and for Diablo III will have to wait an awful lot longer. Bluntly put, WoW is Blizzards cash cow and they will not jeopardise that by releasing a competitor product until WoW nears the end of its life cycle, which it is as Cataclysm is its last planned expansion.

 

Just sickens me that I've wasted 5 years of my life waiting for nothing because developers don't have a clue. All these people being paid millions and yet I could do a better job. Star Wars Galaxies had the right idea, it just wasn't pulled off because SOE are clueless.

On the horizon what is there? there's SWTOR but they've made it perfectly clear they aren't interested in the hardcore, so I expect a WoW clone but with linear class quests.

SWTOR isn't a WoW clone, but it will be an immersive-story orientated game, and not for everyone. I actually think FF XIV is the new mmo to play later this year.

I think gaming really is dead to me now, it has all gone down hill since this casual gamer craze and all the good PC franchises went to console.

I would try console gaming for a while, lot of fine RPG titles there, and come back to mmo when the next generation titles such as FF XIV and SWTOR launch.

 

 Both games utilise Crystal Tools so graphically there will be similarities, and the PS3 will lbe very good system to play the game on, logically because the engine was developed for it originally. I like the Final fantasy XIII story, so I am expecting to enjoy the immersive world and storyline offered by XIV. I think there will be linear elements to the game, but with some nice open features that will make it feel like open world sandbox too. It's very hard to have completely non-linear game and give the game an immersive plot for players to follow.

 I think I would simply try the demo or game at launch with your current hardware, though I would upgrade to Windows 7.

 

The PS3 version will be very good in comparison to the PC, remember Square Enix are  Japanese Game company, they need a killer PS3 version at retail launch to get all those millions of Japanese to go get the game, that has to be Square's strategy for launch...get the console mmo market (however large that really is). I have 46" LCD HDTV so will go the console route for this one.

20-25+ hours for the beginning/intro, then the game starts. Not sure when it ends. I'm around 22 hours and still in the beginning.

 

I read it can be anywhere from 40-50 hours if you continue CP grinding and doing extra missions after the story. I think I'll probably end up playing the game a couple times too.. I simply love the cinematics. 

 

I would agree with that, how long FF XIII lasts depends very much on player choices, I guess that means it is a completely linear game ;) . But seriously I think it all comes down to whether you like the immersive story, if you do you'll stick through the game explore all the options and enjoy the game. But, if it isn't your thing it isn't your thing. A similar thing to FF XIV I guess, some will like and some won't, if OP can get a trial for Demo then I guess they can get their feet wet without game purchase.

 You cannot complete the game just by holding down one button. The game has progressive difficulty and features if you play significantly into FF XIII this is apparent. I sort of doubt you have played this game in any depth, it's as good as the Bioware RPGs, just a different style. Can't wait for FF XIV, will be a blast too I reckons!

 It's a Japanese console RPG with an immersive story, what were you expecting? Sorry, but if you were expecting a non-linear game then you must be pretty naive in your software purchases.

 I have been playing FF XIII and I think it a blast. Killer graphics and sound make it a very immersive game when played on PS3. One of the best games of the year in my opinion.

 STO is a fun space based mmo. I think it a blast and great fun to play.

 I think some people just are scared  of or don't like instanced mmo games. However, I actually like STO, and think it a blast. Maybe some just need to re-think their definitions.

 I too have been having a blast playing STO. A very good game I think too, though some people don't seem to get it.
