I am thinking hot MMORPG for the year at this stage. Certainly I will be there at launch. Playing PS3 with keyboard and gamepad. Should be a blast, I know I think it will be one.

I think a history of McDonalds Hamburgers will change your mind about the P2P mmo fast-food restaurant

1955 15 cents for the hambo monthly sub.

1968 18 cents

1974 30 cents

1984 50 cents

1990 62 cents

2000 89 cents

2013 single hamburgers just aren't on the menu anymore you have to go get a F2P/B2P happy meal instead.

No. Unless they adopt keyboard and mouse as standard.

Well, that's the thing, because the next generation PS4 has a next generation controller and comes with a head set. So we are talking a touch pad on the front of the controller. Now a touch pad would allow you to do mouse-like stuff I'd be thinking here.

I think the idea of a free-to-play faction an early one and a weak one for an MMO, and especially a PvP-centric one at that. The only way you can make it work is that they access game content, but are paper tigers of characters that you have to upgrade out of anyway. Also, I question how large the PvP is. Will they go for massive scale. That has always been a tricky one. If they are going for small teams up to 10 then balance is much easier, but you lose the feel of massive PvP and are just doing PvP mini-games. Sigh, without more details it is hard to write much about this one.

Well, guys here's the thing. The Xbox One and PS4 pre-release sales are very strong. At launch the hardware specs of the consoles will be a revelation to games. I think it likely that for the next years post-launch the next generation consoles will be the primary platforms around which games are developed, and the PC version will be more-or-less a port from them. That makes a lot of sense to game developers since you maximise your sales, but it means that PC gamers won't be the driving force driving game development.

Next point. For some games like MMOs you may simply want to use a wireless keyboard and mouse. There is no reason a games developer can't give you mouse and keyboard support for PS4 or Xbox One.

Finally, I think most major coming MMOs will have Xbox One and PS4 versions. It makes so much sense as it gives them much more people that might buy the game. No Surprise that Planetside 2, FF XIV, EQ Next, TESO and more will be developed for the console gamer. In the end high sales of Xbox One and PS4 will drive a new wave of gaming, and that wave will include MMOS.

Quite simply stated gamers, Sony and PS4 will win the next generation console wars. Sony have put together a slick launch campaign and have superior console gaming hardware to both Nintendo and Microsoft, and at a lower price point to boot. PS4 has better launch games too, and most importantly for MMO players more mmos, and I think next gen console is going to be a platform that will be used for coming MMOs, and with many coming to PS4. M$ are more expensive, and with inferior gaming hardware optimised for TV. The DRM debacle just shows how badly M$ has judged the gaming market of 2013, they just don't get gamers at all. Don't give M$ any more of your hard earned bucks...go buy a Sony.

Not quite. I mean yeah its ok if you have never played bf3 or ps2 or cod or halo........

Worrying thing for CCP is that PS2 game is coming to PS4console  soon after release. PS2 is quite excellent.

First of all I just want to say that in no way am I being biased toward any console here. I have owned both consoles and both had their advantages and disadvantages. I totally understand and do not fault anyone who does not like Microsoft's new policies on the Xbox One. Three reasons why I'll be getting a Xbox One.

1. The games. The games were just so much better than what Sony had to offer. Everyone was complaining after Microsoft's first Xbox One's reveal about how there was no focus on games. Totally understand and a very viable gripe but at E3 they clearly had the game advantage and games are what matters most to players. They had Ryse which looked very very good and TitanFall which was amazing. Those Titan mechs were awesome to watch in action. You also had Quantum Break which clearly is going to be open of the most innovative titles this next-gen. Sony maybe more policy friendly towards gamers but games are what matter the most.

In terms of games sony have far more on offer, and in terms of MMO gaming a far greater range of games has been announced. Also, with Sony you do actually own the games you buy, but with M$ you merely have them as rentals.

2. It is more than just games. Maybe because I'm in my 40's now I look at things a little bit different but having a console at home that gives you more than just games is very appealing to me and perhaps to the older gamer as well. We just don't like games, we also like sports and tv. To have that all in one box is quite nice.

Most TiVo blow away anything Xbox One can do with TV.

3. A more mature audience. The other thing I will mention that perhaps with Microsoft's new design for the Xbox One you may even get a more mature audience on the Xbox now. You know not every immature 15 year old can afford the new Xbox One. People always complained about  how the Xbox gets a bad rap with having a bad community. Perhaps now things will change now that Microsoft seems to be catering towards the more mature crowd these days.

So you think there aren't rich less than 15 year old kids out there whose parents buy them whatever they want. Arguing that an expensive price is a good thing doesn't cut it in my book.

I'm not against Xbox and never was I'm just against Microsoft and them trying to squeeze the customers out of every last penny.

Thing you have to remember also is with M$ and Xbox one you never really own the game due to their DRM system. All you own is the box and the rest is rented.

NEWS FLASH, the PS4 does not include the camera. XBOX 1 does, so its not really apples to apples. Add $60 to the PS4, still less, still seems as if it will have more graphical prowess, so in the end its if you prefer the exclusives on the Xbox and think you want that camera. At least with PS4 you have a choice.

Is the camera really actually critical to much of the gaming or is it just for social networking like Skype that you might do via the  Xbox One. If as most think it is mostly the later then Sony have made the better choice in making it an option. M$ are selling you an inferior spec console at an inflated all-the-options-in deal.

It is clear from the hefty price tag that M$ see the Xbox One as a windows media center PC. However, for just a little more cash you can make a top notch gaming PC. Avoid.
As I have written here before, PS4 is the gamers choice for next generation console. DOn't waste your time with M$ and Xbox One.

Scaling content comes to raiding, eh?  Now that's something that I can say "about time" with, Blizzard.  Well done.

It's a positive move from Blizz, but at the wrong time. They really needed this kinda thing just after the Panda expansion.

Zenimax Online has been a bit hush-hush on the business model for Elder Scrolls Online and we're finding this all a bit concerning. Read on and learn why in this week's Elder Scrolls Online column.

It really doesn’t matter how good The Elder Scrolls Online ends up being at launch. Subscriptions, even in their heyday, were always a losing proposition. For one, MMO game design suffered to keep paying players playing by padding out content and utilizing numerous arbitrary time sinks. But for the most part, players were willing to pay, as long as the game was good and could hold their attention. Back then every MMO developer out there was competing for your $15, but in today’s world, they’re really competing for your attention.

In the end I think it comes down to player surveys and the numbers of pre-launch sales that Bethesda Softworks think they'll get. If you think you'll get one million plus at launch then it makes sense to have the sub, at least initially as it gives everyone full access to the game and you don't have to bother with the full-on cash shop. Later you can always move to the F2P or hybrid model. This assumes that the game is going to actively patch content in on a regular basis. If not then F2P or P2W with the cash shop are the way to go. For myself I am hoping that it will be a sub initially, with content patched in on a regular basis, at least over the first year.

When did they say they were restarting the game from the ground up? They're making major changes not throwing away five years of work.

Well, the business suits who run Blizzard  started from their best selling McDonalds Hamburger and then built and developed it into the Big Mac. However, during that time many people stopped  eating the core business Hamburger and start eating at Panera Bread. Now this spooks Blizz so they start developing a healthy option for insertion into their gaming menu.

Still really doesn't change the fact though that its a lack luster game in terms of its mechanics and all that and depth, something that Dungeon Crawlers typically try focus on giving more to an otherwise repetitive and thoughtless kill fest.

A dungeon crawl is simply where a game lets you navigate a hero through environments like a dungeon to kill and collect treasure. That's what Diablo III does well, but, if you aren't into dungeon crawls then you will get bored and stop playing before maxing out a character in the game.

If MAG could 256 players on the same map why wouldn't a console that has more power be able to do the same.

Anyways, the problem with comments like yours is that you are not thinking. The number one advantage of the console vs PC is  console cames can be highly optimized unlike the pc version that has to run for a wider range of hardware and specs. 2. Not all the computer that play ps2 on the pc have the spec you listed. 3. the ps4 version of ps2 doesn't have to look as great as the PC version. 5. The ps4 version doesn't need as much players as the pc version.

The ps4 version is targeting console gamers. If you are a PC gamer, you have no real reason to bother playing the ps4 version unless you want to.

Here is the common tech balance between PC and console. PC gamers end up being shafted on updates because they keep the game scaled to the console tech that came out 4 years ago while the PC tech keeps progressive.

The games company usually make a version that will port cross platform as there is no money to be made in writing games that optimally use the high end PC hardware. As a result console performs well in gaming, and PS4 will compare very well with PC version over next few years.

Hi All,

It's been confirmed that Planetside 2 and other Sony MMOs will be coming to the PS4 including EverQuest Next which will also be shown at E3 next week:

Couldn't agree more PS4 is the gamers choice for console now. Panetside 2 and EQ Next for PS4 will really give it some solid mmo gaming, while M$ and Xbox one will have little or nothing there. M$ have gone in this weird reinvention of the old windows media center box with Xbox One. Crazy thing is it is nowhere near as good as the TV streaming boxes or TiVos already on the market, and won't work properly with many US TV users or anyone outside the US at launch. Worse still Xbox One doesn't have anything that special for gaming, and its gaming hardware specs are inferior to PS4. M$ have dumped a windows 8 on the world everyone. Pass until they see sense and improve the box

Safe enough bet this will happen more than happy to put all my money on it :P

I think Blizz had Titan project MMO more or less up and running in-house and then scrapped the effort after seeing how the MMO has developed over the past couple of years and the betas that are on the way. That, though, has nothing to do with EQ Next as we haven't seen the game yet.  From Blizz I would expect SCII, DiabloIII and WoW expansions over the next couple of years.

I honestly think, Bill, that if you try to write a review comparing FF XIV to ARR then you are making a mistake. It is best to approach the game as an entirely new MMORPG and play both the PS3 and PC versions of the game  and compare those instead. Yes, I know the original XIV is background, but it just gets boring to try to compare everything between two very different games. Remember ARR is SE's third MMORPG, so it has been a learning curve for them and they should be evaluated afresh with ARR. FInally, ARR is a big game, so it should be played for the month at least before delivering a review, and the reviewer should have progressed significantly through the game.
