You do know there's PvP, right?  Think it requires level 30 at this point, though, so no one is doing it except the legacy players.  After release, it is scheduled for the first patch.

 

Personally, I'm enjoying the hell out of the game.  There are so many ways to level, there's always something to do.  There is no cash shop or other microtransaction BS.  It's very polished.  It feels like Final Fantasy and has an oldschool MMO vibe.

I already sold my account with 1550 hours played and 2 legendaries crafted after I realised all this and I am glad I did :) When I announced my guild that I am leaving the game they understood me very well, gw2 is not about progression, grind, etc.. Its just about a simple ''fun''. GW2 is the game for casuals .. thats not mmoprg i am looking for :/

 

I can understand your opinion.  Mine happens to be the exact opposite - after years of gaming and now having a family, the ONLY thing I look for in a game is "fun".  I get paid to do a job, when I get home I'm done with work.

Based on Disney's past - It will be re-released as a special "platinum" boxed set with some extra fluff and a redesigned cover, with "digitally remastered" graphics and sound once every 7 years until the end of the world.

Definitely agree with the above.... a gaming mouse is fantastic.  I love my naga.  I guess I can see it helping if before you had other hotkeys assigned around your movement keys and didn't have dodge in reach.

To be honest, hype has a lot to do with the individual.  Ever notice how when you buy a new car, EVERYONE seems to have one?  Well, I can tell you that your purchase of said automobile had very little to do with the other people purchasing them.  Rather, you are now noticing those cars more like that damn zit on your forehead that appears to grow to encompass your whole face the more you look at it.  I definitely got into the SWTOR hype and was burned terribly.  I avoided that with TSW, despite having followed the game for the past few years.  I think this has contributed to my enjoyment of the game at this point.  I'm able to causally explore the world, taking my time, and not caring if I have to wait an hour or two to finish a quest because my phase is bugged.  I just don't care, I love every second I'm playing the game.

I'm glad they advertised as much as they did.  I have a lot of gaming friends who still have never heard of the game, despite them being big fans of this genre (mmos, horror, consipiracy, fringe science).  This game will likely have a niche fanbase after the "speed levelers" and "easy mode" gamers fall away, and from what I can tell, the community is perfectly fine with this. Advertising hype or no.

Of course we see it for what it is.  The thing is, though, this game is set in the real world.  It doesn't conflict with the lore in any way.  In fact, if they threw in google tshirts or "Twilight" shirts (as lame as those would be...), they would directly relate to some of the story and pop culture references.  

I for one proudly wear my "I want to believe" shirt in game, knowing full well I'm supporting the greatest TV series ever created.

I hate to be a complainer, but I'm pretty sure even when I'm only playing an MMO casually for a month, I get more enjoyment than a movie and a latte give me.  It's hillarious that people will spend $20 on an animated horse or $250 on some weapon in Diablo, but $15 is too much to ask to play a game for a month with the expectation that over time the game is build upon?  I'm not arguing that we should just throw our money at developers without reason.  But if you are enjoying the game, then it's worth a sub fee.  And don't throw the cash shop crap in here either.  As of right now, it's purely cosmetic and is purely elective.  If that changes that you can get back to me.

Yeah, the decks do require the advanced tier of skills.  They've already said this will be unlocked in this upcoming BWE, which is likely why they've released this info - we're gonna see it Friday anyway.

if your given top of the line gear, and magically have the right skill...you could.

it doesnt matter...

thing is you wont have the gear, and you wont have the skills, depending on how you place your AP/SP you will be able to do it quicker than someone else who evenly distributes.  Both players will have done the same content but one will be able to move on...thats not levels no matter how hard you want to believe.  

On top of the storyline reasoning ect for jumping content.  its another argument that doesnt matter.

how would you equip that top of the line gear with no skill points? thats the whole point! its straight up linear progression but gives you a ton more choices on how to progress and is a lot more flexible and interesting. Not sure why this is such a hard concept to grasp.

 

straight up free open skill based system without any sort of gear restrictions really only works for single player games or games setup like EVE, in most MMOs you would just end up giving top of the line gear to new players(by people who already reached last parts of the game) and making content way to easy and pointless. Also as a story centered game it needs this linear progression to get you through the story. I'm glad zones are setup in straight quest hubs but their is still progression in zones and especially between zones.

And this makes me say that even EVE has levels.  Can you just roll a new character and hop in a Titan?  Never mind that, can you even hop into a destroyer?

Simmer down now.  Beta doesn't start for another hour.  12 EST.

Take it for what it is: a marketing and community building tool that puts a lot of hype out there.  Of course it's a crappy flash game.  Who cares?  I have a zillion people on my fake facebook account I created for this, and from time to time I log onto the secret war so that I can get a bunch of cosmetics for my toon.  The factions rage against each other on the forums, building a sense of conflict and the devs keep changing the rules to give it all a sense of urgency.  The whole time the weeks are passing until beta weekends start.  I doubt FC is looking for any more than that.


I'm really looking forward to this.  That said, being a long time Elder Scrolls fan, there is a long standing tradition of lots of bugs.  Can't wait to see this in an mmo environment.  The forum rage may actually travel back in time to wash over us.  This may be what will cause the end of the world later this year.

The thing I've noticed as a general trend, is that if a game offers a lifetime sub... it is almost always lacking content to keep you engaged for a extended length of time.

I have been hoping some of the folks who got to play at PAX would chime in. What you describe seems to fit me perfectly. Long gone are my days of Hardcore 16 hours a day MMO marathons.

Me as well, which is exactly why I'm excited about it.  And which is why I will continue to play SWTOR.  End game is boring, I agree.  But playing casual, it's a whole lot of story content that will keep me busy for a long time.  The other thing that is really drawing me in is the fact that it's going to be a little bit complex, which is why I think a game like EVE has a much more interesting, and less childish playerbase.  Usually ;)

 

As for the original quote, I can think of one game that had a lifetime sub and had pretty good content - LOTRO.  Of course, they may be the only game I can think of that has succeeded with a free to play transition.  I still sometimes feel the pull to go back to Middle Earth.

 I agree with you here.  The problem I have with Bioware making an MMO is that it is just a bigger version of ME in the SW world.  I feel that I am playing a great single player game and for the most part, do not need friends to play with.  I can't see paying a monthly fee for a single player game.  I have no problem paying a subscription for an mmo, but I don't feel like I'm in an mmo.  If you don't need a world to run around in, then you should find great pleasure in TOR.  I preferred the worlds in SWG or the world in Asheron's Call.  I do wish TOR's combat mechanics were like ME though.  I'm not a fan of 3rd person, but it works well in ME.  I have played the first two through more than once and can't wait to get my hands on ME3.  In fact, being in TOR makes me want to go back and play ME and ME2 again.

One thing I hate though, is space combat on rails.  Check out Clone Wars Adventures at www.soe.com if you don't know what I mean.

Actually it's a bigger version of KotOR in the... world it's supposed to be in.  And it's hardly single player, you only need to search Google for TOR + PvP to see that.

You are right.  KotOR is 100% instanced.  If it looks boring and slow, it might be because it's showing it's age. ;)  Still, it is a classic...

Problem with this argument is that you leave out sandbox, non trinity MMOs that are successful, such as Eve Online.

Here is the real issue I see with SWToR. Bioware seems to spread out and EA seems to be running the show. I mean honestly how long was the SWToR presentation before they were moving onto another game noone cares about?


 


SWToR should be there main focus, but it does not seem to be getting the attention it deserves.



 


By another game no one cares about, do you mean Fifa, or Battlefield?  MMO bias much?
