I wasn't aware that gold was worthless in WoW. Only 5,000 g for fast flying, and 20,000 for the war mammoth mount. A mere pittance.

there were absolutely no consequences for screwing up. Though thats a different debate as to whether thats difficulty or frustration, my point was simply, there was nothing to make people care about losing even if they did manage to screw up the insanely easy instanced scaled content. 

That's not the game I played. Repair costs were a big deal. Sometimes we had to stop because we ran out of money.

Looks like a single-player action-arcade game, as the video eludes to, and appears to be heavily instanced with limted community massively-multiplayer game-play.  Similar turn-offs for Champions Online, but not having played DC, I'm not sure.

Remember that this is a hero mmo. In sword and magic, you expect an important part of the population to be in the players, and gathered close. I think for many people would be a turn off having hundred heroes roaming the streets, feeling less unique. I am not saying too much instanced but definitely not like wow.

 

I actually agree wtih this. In S&S MMOs, we are the regular citizens - mainly because we don't go around in brightly coloured underwear.

Heroes aren't special, if everyone in the city is a superhero.

I haven't played L4D, but I suppose, but in a persistant world, with a common goal of mutual survival and improving one's colony. We had a few threads about such durign winter, and some very good ideas were brought up.

Personally, and you'll have to forgive the pun, I don't see much lifespan in that.

  Just having a shotgun and ammo and some armour seems a little restrictive in regards to character progression.  Besides, I'll admit, I love playing casters ;)

 

Real world settings have all sorts of skills to acquire and develop.

Some notes from the lecture “MMO Retention - Learning from the First 25 Years,” by Scott Hartsman of Trion, and Gordon Walton of BioWare.

Gordon Walton of Bioware discussed aspirational experiences, and pointed out that they didn’t necessarily have to be day to day, they could be things that people aim for over the long term. In Ultima Online, for example, the data showed that people who had houses stayed longer than people who didn’t, so making changes to offer housing to more players became important.

It's hilarious when people start throwing around phrases like 'real gamer' as if it means anything. Playing a game, any game, makes someone a real gamer just like breathing air makes them a real air-breather.

If there's some kind of approved guidelines that isn't someone's personal opinion I've yet to see it.

If you can't feel the difference between buying something, and winning or earning something, then it can't be explained to you.
