It was expressed in one interview or another (one of the later ones) that the only PvP that will be in FFXIV is the same type or theme of PvP events as were in FFXI. I don't think they can really improve too much on this. Even if they were to implement a full on PvP experience, it would still be a pre-scheduled event of some sort. One on one, two on two, a party on a party... it could be interesting, but it's really not FF's place. They're making Dissidia, with FF heroes and villains versus style, which is plenty to satiate the thirst for any FF versus. I wouldn't mind seeing it in XIV, but I neither wish for it nor expect it. I would just accept it.

Funny thing is, if they actually did do it, it would probably become the only one out there done right. lol...

Aside from all the points already mentioned in the way of cash overriding gameplay, and buyable items override game design, the reason I personally can't stand micro-transactions is because it's too easy to get carried away. If not for me, then the next guy, who takes gaming too seriously. There is a message when logging into Final Fantasy XI that reads something to the effect of "we do not wish to see your family, work, or school suffer". P2P regulates the amount a person spends on that game by being all-inclusive. F2P with buyable game components doesn't seem to share that concern even by limiting the amount of money a person spends.

I could easily dump $500 into one of those F2P games in a day, conquer it in a week, and save myself the "time sink" of P2P MMO's. But on the other hand, $500 invested in Final Fantasy XI at $15/mo is TWO YEARS worth of more enjoyable and rewarding gameplay. And nobody questions where that money came from if it's spent over the course of two years, but if you even have the option to drop $500 into a "F2P" game - how the HELL is that free to play? It ends up costing you MORE in the long run, and you only feel like a shitbag afterwards because you know that money could have gone to something better.

If a person becomes so enamoured with a video game that they're spending their rent money, their grocery money, their education money, etc. not only does that person have a problem but the game company doesn't have a problem allowing it either. It's bad enough people already let these games consume them. Adults have pummeled kids, parents have left babies unattended to pass away. That shit actually happens, and whether or not those people should be allowed to exist isn't the question. They fact is that they do. The question is "what does a F2P game companies provide for its gamers?" F2P companies can push out a plethora of craptacular games. They make oodles of money on those microtransactions. I doubt they care about gamers in the slightest. The quality of games has only improved to stay in the market to compete. The ones that are truly F2P WITHOUT micro-fees are fine. The P2P games are generally fine too until RMT is allowed or ignored (same principles).

You bought the computer that meets the minimum requirements. You bought the game. You're paying for monthly internet. You're paying for the monthly subscription fee. Group your internet and subscription and it's hardly a noticeable bill. I seriously don't understand why people gripe about fees. If you're truly that broke you shouldn't worry about games at all, let alone MMO's. No game is more than ~$15 to play, and for reliable high-speed internet you're looking at something like $50. In all likelihood unless you live by yourself that bill is either fully payed for or divided. I'm one of those people who lives by myself (for now) and I don't really notice $50 from $65. My internet and FFXI subscription go hand & hand.

Who doesn't spend $100/mo on lesser important stuff? I SAVE more money by playing P2P MMO's, not because I have no life, but because I have something to do rather than being idle. I could blow $100 a night at a strip club, but for how long? I know that the game is at home waiting for me, a game I WANT to play, that I enjoy playing, with people I enjoy playing with. That $15/mo for a game subscription saves people money. That "time sink" saves people money. It also helps them relax. If they don't know how to take things in stride, as I've said before, these games aren't for everyone...

It's about damn time.

If I couldn't pay to play Final Fantasy XI for whatever reason (usually losing and needing a new credit card) I would go for weeks, or sometimes months without playing, and suddenly I'm paying for all the time I didn't even play? Having to pay for the inactive months, reactivating my Contend ID at full price, and having to pay for the current month all in one sitting makes me want to vomit.

Even better than anniversary would be block payment options - or at the very least, realizing that shit happens, and not charging people the way to did me in XI. Almost made me quit completely. I haven't played WoW in over a year, but I bet if I bough a 30-day card I'd still find my freaking character exactly how I left him. No reactivating. No additional fees. Just like it should be.

Especially if they're going for the whole "casual-friendly" thing. XI was hardcore heavy on SO many levels and sub-levels some people don't even realize. I shouldn't be punished by the game for being temporarily unable to play.

Even if you could jump, you're not really going to be able to get somewhere that is exploitable as an advantage. If you can attack a monster, that monster can attack you. It's only the monsters that can traverse any terrain when they are aggro'd. I've seen them walk through tress and climb cliffs and find you long after you've reached the far end of the zone when they should have lost interest minutes ago. Even if you could jump, you wouldn't be able to exploit these things. Like jumping off the airships in FFXI, which didn't really DO anything but freak out newbies. That wasn't annoying. It was silly of course, but not annoying. The weren't dropped in some forbidden godmode data zone. They just... sat there (whoop-do-do) until the airship zoned.

If characters could trip and fall though, eek. That would bring a whole 'nuther frustration to running from enemies and surviving certain combat scenarios. Dragoon's jump is so fast it doesn't really make them 'invincible' or 'out of reach' for more than a split second every five minutes. I can't imagine anyone else's would either. So it would be nice to at least be some kind of unlockable ability, even if it was restricted to certain classes or skillsets. Everyone standing around, not jumping, reminds me of emos at concerts. xD

I do jump IRL. I jump often. I jump on top of things and walk ledges and climb trees and do handstands and things whenever those losers who've lost touch with their youth would say I was "out of line" aren't there to talk smack. Just making things larger would prevent people from being dumb. Like crags. There's no way on earth anyone could ever climb or jump a crag. Not even a dragoon. Not even on a chocobo. But you COULD still walk the spines in certain areas where you found Dancing Weapons. With ease I might add.

This is gold. While I'm sure a good number of posters would like to be betas most of them are inspired by more selfish and less selfless reasons. But Ghosty sounds pro. I'd love for that guy to get into beta.

I myself have four laptops; only one of which was built specifically for gaming which is my Dell XPS 1530, one backdated IBM, one shelf-bought HP, and a Japanese Macbook Pro - plus a custom desktop gaming PC and of course my PS3.

Wow. I planned on building another computer, but I didn't realize I already had that many machines... I might just resell.

But it's no use beta testing if your computer can't hack it. We're likely to need upgrades if our systems were bought any time this year unless it's comprised of the best of the best video cards and processors, which are still quite expensive right now.

I'm not sure if I feel like dropping 5G's on a powerhouse behemoth. Until I make up my mind my PLAYSTATION 3 should suffice. Has anyone hacked their PS3's OS? I've read about it, using linux or w/e, but what's the point in turning your console into a PC?

As for the concept of "growth" I think you might have taken it out of context, and it wouldn't be the first time someone misinterpreted or mistranslated SE. It could just as easily refer to the size of the new Roegadyn who dwarf the former Galka, or the Lallafel who have evolved from Taru, or the overall maturity this new MMORPG seems to be bringing to the table. But since it was mentioned in the context of character development, not character creation, it could simply imply the armoury system, and nothing more. Instead of crediting the speculation and rumors I'm only going by what's announced via the official website, which hints toward nothing. And as far as growth is concerned, first you need something to grow from. Releasing everything at the start would not be smart on SE's part. As I expect (if you actually read the eintrety of my post) as a 2nd or 3rd expansion the addition of male Miqo'te is feasible, but not so much at launch. Releasing this as a late addition would give some players reason to keep playing and others reason to come back, giving us something to cling to, milking us for all we're worth.

I don't assume to rationalize my own point of view; instead I assume nothing. That is where our arguments differ, which is why I believe my points are (only slightly) more rational. Retiring the gender-exclusives won't make the world "vastly diverse" imo - only slightly. It's still the same song & dance. However adding entirely new races will. I too care about the game as well as the players, but the quality of both at once, and so I hold SE to high standards. Since The Spirits Within they have been doing some unpredictable, crazy, and off the wall things, taking leaps of faith where some pay off and others don't. They aren't afraid to experiment or take chances. Releasing all genders playable is not all that shocking. In fact, it's safe. And given their track record and what we've witness of XIV so far, they don't seem too concerned about safety at this point.

As easy as it is to say they should include males and females, it's harder for people to accept why they won't (or why they haven't). Right now "keep your hopes up" sounds like nothing more than bait. They fail to mention how long we might be hanging by that thread of hope. Honestly if everyone agreed on ridding the gender-exclusives this thread would be rather dull. I've gotten tired of arguing that these changes shouldn't happen, so instead I'm offering my objectional perspective on how it should happen. It makes for more interesting conversation, which is what these forums are for. I would expect you needn't be reminded of that. ;p

Dull. The most prominent disgrace to the lore of the Mithra / Miqo'te race is that more males play them than females, trashing the lore of these character concepts. The scarce feminine feline population will ruin their history, and how does that help a game just to satisfy a few players?

That is a beast - a berserker feral with heavy Vincent Valentine influence (most likely in the spirit of fun, ilke the "mascot" dressphere). I mean really look at it. It reminds me of a moomba before a moogle, and Vincent before anything else.

Which raises an interesting point. Forget for a moment that Vincent uses a gun and transforms, switching from ranger to berserker. With the specifics of his claw, cape, and dark theme, his character concept could be developed into a brand new class all together...

Just something else to add to this whole concept spiel...

Since they're making weapons and armor perishable, we're left to wonder to what extent. They would be excellent death penalties I think. I was discussing this within my LS.

Realistically, even if a player were to gain experience in the event of defeat (as we've all heard being an argument in that you learn from defeat), being defeated in and of itself means that either your weapon would have broken and/or your armor would have been pierced, and rendered almost ineffective.

When they complain about deleveling, just a sidepoint that I figure I might as well bring up here, your level reflects your skill as an adventurer. Losing experience points might seem unrealistic, but losing a level is not. Even if you gained experience for defeat, you would lose status as a competent adventurer. Being beaten by a monster causes people to second-guess your abilities.

So maybe instead of losing whatever form of experience there is to gain, your armor and / or weapon breaks, AND you lose a rank in social status (as opposed to or in relation to your level of fame) meaning you may have to repeat some quests to regain the citizens faith in addition to buying more gear (or at least having a craftsman fix it for a reasonable price). But hey, at least you kept your precious experience...

Regardless to the fact that there will not necessarily be exp. points; retaining your skills learned is moot when you need the approprite equipment to use them. ;p

It might seem overwhelming at first, but it's how players could truly define and specialize in their respective styles of play. To prevent things from getting too confusing, these skill advencements are all to be considered as tiers, and said tiers would require a certain skill level to unlock, realized with the combination of other skills.

So you couldn't get jump JUST by being a tank. Youd have to use abilities like dodge quite often, then equip heavy armor and lance, both of which you must be sufficiently skilled with, to use jump - which is more practical for a DD than a tank. I also like the subtle combination job class idea.

I was going over some possibilities with a friend of mine who's thoughts are derived from table-top dice-roll rpg's and he suggested something quite similar to your cross-classing to form new classes (but I held back from posting it to keep it a secret). ;p

Our concept was identical. You raise two separate abilities, and if those abilities could relate, they would unlock abilities for your new class, i.e. the holy knight.

But in addition to that, so that it's not restricted to classes and set paths, leveling specific skills also granted special abilities. You start with attack and defend, eventually you'd get guard, block, parry, then evade by focusing on defense; basically being a tank.

Skills equipped would be determined by your weapons and gear. Combining unarmored with evade would grant a mage dodge, while light armor with evade would grant a thief or ninja jump, which only becomes an attack with both heavy armor and a lance, i.e. the dragoon.

It's a completely customizable and interchangeable skillset that would literally take forever to complete, especially with them being perishable skills. Only by keeping the most balanced skills up to par could one fulfill the ideal red mage class, but you wouldn't be limited to red mage abilities. You could be a pseudo-red mage that focuses on your enfeeblements and enhancements, while contrast would reflect in those who chose to focus on both white curative and black elemental magic.

Not as far as Square-Enix is concerned. Ever played as Mog in FF VI/III? He was one of the most powerful melee characters, wielding spears/lance, shields, knives and heavy armor.

Also humans and other playable races are NPCS, that's no excuse heh.

Personally Ivalice moogles are my least favorite designed moogles, so I would really love to see the style of moogles from VI/IX etc in XIV.


That was a specific moogle. In any case, realistically they could only be one or the other, and where your beliefs lie in the sturdy strong knight mine reside with the frail fearful mage. That would clash for so many players, like the male and female races, I think SE would rather keep moogles to themselves.

What I would like to see, just to bring more life to moogles, is GM's interacting with the game directly when warranted. Say you're stuck because of a glitch in the game; a moogle would show up and cast a tractor spell on you to remove you from your confines.

There are plenty NPC's of all races, sure. But that doesn't discredit that Moogle NPC's play their specific part. Honestly, it wouldn't seem right being greeted in my personal domicile by a Miqo'te. Damn theif. Or a Roegadyn. This room ain't big enough for the two of us.

You get the picture. I'm NOT about to get into a debate on this. Nobody is satisfied with anything. Everyone wants something. You can't please everyone.

Instead of Mog being a supporting character of some game, or some extra race in an MMO, to at least keep the rarity and elusiveness and mysteriousness of the Moogle-ology, I'd hope for "A Moogle RPG" where all the main characters are moogles. It could work in an MMO until you realize that so many people would be playing as a moogle it would lose its novelty.

It's just a different avatar, nothing more. There would be countless moogles in all the varying job classes. Who wouldn't at LEAST have a moogle alt? Sorry, too annoying. You can do that yourself with modding .DAT image files. Only shows up for you. Not that I've done it, but I can't say I've never considered putting that bondage slave mithra tied up in my mog house to greet me instead of Mr. Moogle.

I read the post but I wasnt sure I had anything to contribute. I mean, not to denounce anything, but it's basically a recap of everything discussed in a couple other threads amongst a couple other posters, but reworded and presented as "your thoughts". I remember bring up this concept specifically, referring to them as "perishable skills".

If I could play as a moogle, I'd want to play as an Ivalice moogle. And Ivalice is pretty confined to Ivalice.

I think SE needs those NPC's for themselves. They play a big part in the little odd-jobs of the game. To make them playable, well, they'd likely have more mana than anything, but always be one-shotted with the weakest HP and VIT in the game. It would almost be a worthless novelty character to play except for the super elite mage lovers.

Excuse my while I ramble: This time around they're smaller than Lalafell. I wonder how they could incorporate playable moogles into the world. Probably not the worlds of Vana'diel or Haidelyn, but how they would make a positive impact in a game where they are no longer such mysterious creatures. I've always wanted to play as an adventuring moogle. I even started writing some fan-fiction in the form of Moogle's Diary, using the outlines of other games to pace my adventures. But in the end it's even more of a fantasy than any of the games. Even if they were super-weak I'd probably play as one if I were able. What if there was also a Moogle God? I should get back to my fan-fiction. I'd like to see moogles do not-so-cute things and be not-so-nice. The dark side of Moogles. The Nomad Moogle, who cast aside the life of adventurer support to experience those adventures himself. Another of the prestige ideas that we're not likely to see. Super rare-ness after having completed only the toughest of challenges.

Anyway, I think people are limited by games. I don't have to be a rockstar to imagine what being one is like... in the end every moogle would be a Japanese elitist that blamed others for their failures, like that damn Taru paladin that couldn't voke, heal, or tank and caused my party to wipe and disband.

I have a feeling that if SE had announced that FFXIV was going to include both genders for Mi'Qote and Roegadyn, all the naysayers to this thread would have agreed just as easily and supported dual gendering simply because it was SE's decision. whats going to be funny is when SE actually announces that both genders will be included in FFXIV as a surprise, and all the people on this thread arguing to keep single gendered Mi'qote and Roegadyn will realize how much of a joke their arguments were.

It's neither about blind loyalty to SE or being a gutless flipflopper. It's more the fact that these races are being reintroduced as-is. It's not a point that XI is a "different world", fact remains that these are essentially the same characters intended to carry over nothing more than a next-gen FFXI feel. Not the entire game, but mainly these races. Should the gender-exclusive races lose that exclusivity I'll be upset with the decision. SE obviously wanted to carry this theme into FFXIV, hence their current display.

But whatever, you can have your male Miqo'te (honestly I hear crickets when it comes to female Roegadyn), but you'll still be playing as a female when their female agility is higher than that of your male's, because it makes for a better NIN, or whatever the case may be.

If they made Miqo'te male from the beginning of FFXIV announcements I would have no complaints. If they made Roegadyn female from the beginning, I would have no compliants there either. Because 1) Miqo'te sounds more masculine than Mitrha and Roegadyn sounds more feminine than Galka, and 2) It would have showed that in what SE intended from the beginning. But I think they would both STILL be gender-exclusive. And being happy with that decision is not being "blindly loyal" but more accepting of the fact that they are going to do what they are going to do in spite of you. Thus if and when they are announced I WILL eat my words with some sugar and vitamin-C, but until then I don't think they will, don't think they should, and don't think it's really worth debating seeing as how nobody knows and what's for display is there.

Just as there ARE those zealous followers of SE, there are ALSO those who rebel just to rebel. And, to quote one of my favorite bands, "You'll rebel to anything as long as it's not challenging." I could easily jump on the gender bandwagon but I'd rather see playable rodent Qiqirn or primate Genome to compensate for the female feline advantages than Manthra, adding an infinitely more dynamic and quality role-playing aspect than a few furry freaks ever could.

Take that however you want. I'm decidedly Elzen so the choice on whether or not to add them really doesn't affect me in any way. I don't play Mithra / Miqo'te, so I'm unbiased, which is more than I can say for all the "naysayers" of leaving things as they are, and instead ruining two adventuring cultures simultatneously.

I wouldn't expect to see male Miqo'te until sometime much later in the game, perhaps as a novelty prestige class, something you'll have to unlock and restart from ground zero, since male adventurers are far more rare than females. For nothing but a few stat bonuses really. Like the Drow Elves of DDO. By the time I'm able to play one I don't really give a shit. To much work going through the same crap just to be the uber-1337 ranger.

Speaking of prestige classes, I'd like to think there were a wide variety of these, but that's not SE's motiff so we probably won't see it. Oh well...

I think it comes down to why you chose a particular race to take to endgame. For those reasons, people are likely to choose them again. Humes were all-round okay at everything, just like they are now. People who chose Mithra because of their DEX are likely be reborn felines once more. Some players will choose differently, but even for me, The Elzen are tallest and slimmest and it will most likely be my choice. But that is irrelevant. It's the fact that players become emotionaly attached to, and/or intimately acquainted with their most recent character.

My last post wasn't neccessarily denouncing the addition of male Miqo'te (come now, they've released the racial information, might as well get used to calling them what they are), but more in regard to the claims that SE is being unoriginal.

Anyway, since you brought it up, be realistic people! There is a point where hope becomes hopelessness. Optimism becomes denial. Just because the specifics of male/female exclusive gender are not explicitly noted, some are still holding out for the possibility, a few probably even letting that be the deciding factor in whether or not they play.

The races are there for all to see. Male and female versions, for those that include them. While reading their information the Hyuran, Lalafell, and Elzen all toggle between male/female while the Roegadyn and Miqo'te do not. Accept it. Complain all you want, the decision has made. To release that information publically is proof enough. And not unitl drastic changes are officially announced can I respect any statements alluding otherwise...

This is a philosophy for life I try to fulfill every day, but it can be perfectly applied to MMO's. I think people lose sight of this. It is for THESE reasons and only in THIS regard that I might consider myself to be something of an elitist, as opposed to numbers crunchers and the like who exploit and discriminate against other players for unwarranted reasons. Anyway, just felt like sharing. Discuss -- or, y'know, don't. Whatever.

I disagree with the singular portion above me, written; "to add it now would seem kind of like it was just thrown in for no rhyme or reason." These characters experience several trials and tribulations impossible to the NPC's who are deemed as citizens and normal townspeople, start out as nothings and become legends. It's understandable that somewhere down the line they'd incur a scar or two, or twenty. Like every time you die without being resurrected.

Also, I don't really thing you should have a choice in what size your limbs are, people should stay proportionate at least. Just what your frame is. Not just small, medium, and large, but also in weight. I'd also like them to add gradients of muscle definition, age, complexion, hair color, eye color, etc. and maybe facial expression...

The EVE : Online facial customization tool is THE best I've seen in ANY game EVAR.

I don't think anyone else has suggested this before, but yet another reason to stop complaining about character races is this:

If you were, or still are attached to your character in FFXI (or any game for that matter, since the point I'm about to make is clear and indisputable) would you rather abandon your beloved character and play something estranged and unfamiliar, or would it make more sense, being so attached and devout to your virtual projection, to want to bring that same person who has essentially become you into a whole new world to experience whole new things?

Every current and former player in FFXI has a history. What race they were, where they began their journey, what they experienced, what friends they made, and what memories were forged. And for what? To discard like yesterday's newspaper, or to carry into a brand new world? Granted you'll be starting again at ground zero, but your persona, and your experiences in FFXI remain intact. Though it's not as direct as a "sequel" being in this new brilliant world, it's as close as any devout player could hope (who heavily outweigh the one-timers & fleetly FFXI players who complain that there's no originality left in SE).

Truth be told, while SE might recycle certain themes that have become their crutch, they have the most originality and the best representation of that originality compared to that of any other company in the market. It's not a matter opinion. It's not at the sole disposal of the Final Fantasy franchise. It's one of several series of games that they have gifted us with. And we should be so lucky as to have something familiar that we can take with us on this new journey, where everything else is unknown.

That's all I wanted to say.


The only possible things I've seen that could be interpreted as "hidden messages" are the symbol or insignia on the ceter Roegadyn's chest, and someone directly below him all the way at the bottom weilding both a claw and lance.

The wheel itself is the symbol. And the only messages I gathered from that were the possibility of ariel combat, large-scale batles against massive collossal enemies, or maybe something in the text that flies by the screen earlier in the same scene.

Do any of these mean anything? Who knows...
