Initial Impressions of Tabula Rasa, from a 3-day Trialer.
General Discussion « Tabula Rasa 12/14/07 9:49:10 PM
I enjoyed playing Tabula Rasa during beta, just don't have the money currently to buy the game or I probably would. Didn't have much lag that I don't have in most other newer games, but then my computer is over 4 years old so I can't really complain. No idea what my fps rate was, but stuttering/lagging didn't noticably hamper my enjoyment of the game, and I was using the "detected" settings. An occasional hiccup was basically the worst I experienced. Of course could be that there are a lot more players on now and that might influence how much it stutters/lags.

The middle earth lore came before D&D, the middle earth RPG came after.
and tolkien didn't start the fantasy genre, he just started the kind that everyone is familiar with, or if you'd rather the one that everyone recognizes as fantasy..... Just to name a few fantasy authors: Jules Verne and H.P. Lovecraft... their fantasy came a good 50 - 75 years before tolkien became popular (I believe I read somewhere that he started on his first "Rings" novel somewhere in the mid 30's, but his books didn't become popular until the late 50's early 60's ... could be off by a few years as I wasn't around).... Anyways, just wanted to point out that everything has roots that are a lot more far reaching then people tend to want to think about...
And yes I believe chess was created as a teaching tools for tactics in warfare, though from what I've heard it get's it roots from china not arabia (but we're talking over a 1000 years back here (maybe a couple 1000 years) so again I could be wrong.. lol... I'm pretty sure I wasn't around then either.. :D Greetz |

If you really want to go back to the roots of MMORPG's you should check out chess... :D
chess evolved into table top wargames (or non table top), then we got tolkiens fantasy interpretation... which led to Gigax creating Dungeons and Dragons, then we go back to table top wargames (i.e. Warhammer and 40k, epic, etc, etc, etc) computers resulted in computer RPG's which finally led to MMO's ... MMO's are not really role playing games, they use some of the same principles, but how much of an actual role do you get to play in most MMO's?
anyways, my little piece of the pie... :D

not hating wow... although my community experience wasn't great (maybe the first 3 months after launch were great, but after that it went into a lot of bashing and argueing (maybe I just got unlucky with who was online at the same time as me)). The game itself was enjoyable (though not nearly as innovative as a lot of people give it credit for), they brought together great ideas from a lot of games that failed, and of course their setting was allready quite popular with gamers. The areas are good, the mobs are good, the GUI works well, there is lot's to do, but it turns into a grind (something that is quite common with MMO's, to be honest I don't know a single one that doesn't turn into a grind) after a while. I got bored with wow, it's that simple... I might do the free trial for burning crusade, I might actually go back to subscribing for a few months... then again I might not... I'm sure blizzard will survive and so will everyone that enjoys playing it... For those that played it for 2 years and are now calling it a crap game.... uhhhh what?.... if it's so crap why did you play (and pay) for 2 years?... it must obviously have been doing something good.... anyways.... |

Nah, I don't care if I'd have to type in 200 account keys to activate my account (well, it would get real tedious, but that's besides the point), what bothers me is that they want me to buy the game again. I don't have any of the expansions, except for rise of zilarth (believe that's the name), and they do have those nice boxed sets that include the old game plus all expansions, so it's not like it's undoable, but I wanted to see if I could get back into the game before I did that... and now I think it's just not going to happen. Not when a game like Anarchy Online even has all my characters fully intact after 2+ years of complete inactivity, and no BS about buying a new game key. |

Uhm, bit late in reply.. haven't really followed the thread... but still better then not bothering (or being able) to read what is being said... I never said I deleted my characters, I haven't ... what I said is that I wouldn't mind if they would delete my characters after not being active for more then a year (since I would probably do so myself) rather then being told to buy a new key after reinstalling everything ... nothing was mentioned about an option for reactivating the account, if that's a possibility then I might consider going back to this game, enjoyed my time in it... |

I personally despise twinking, it's not that it doesn't require skill... There are some really skilled twinkers out there that do amazing things with their characters, and that entitles them to a certain amount of respect. Having said that, I think it takes all the fun out of PVP, and for me it's the main reason I don't get involved in PVP much. Obviously I'm not a twinker, but I know it's a lot of work (I have tried it in A.O., and yes WoW twinking is extremely simplified compared to A.O.'s). Why did i try it? Because I was told it was a lot of fun, but I just don't think it's worth the trouble. I don't like not being challenged (and being challenged means that I like a fight where things can go both ways, like a fight where I die just as I strike the finishing blow, that's a perfect challenge to me) anyways that's my 2 cents worth Have fun twinking (or not) |

Only played this in open Beta (am a poor bastard don't have money to spend on any MMO subscription, let alone the initial purchase), but anyway during my open Beta period I created 3 characters 2 of which had mining (the one that has Basalt as the first resource to mine). I spent weeks in real time looking for nodes with all 3 characters I came across exactly one node of Bassalt (and of course that was with the character that didn't have mining, but that's besides the point)... Of course this was open Beta, but it sounds like it hasn't improved much... I did run into one group of trees (for the woodcutting ) with one of my characters, but didn't find any besides that one group (and I mean any of any level/type/whatever) |

My personal experience with this game was fairly good, though I ended up spending way too much money on it... (roughly 200 us dollars, which to some people may not sound like a lot, but is more then I could really afford.. anyhow) ... I didn't mind spending the money initially, but considering what I got in return I personally think it was too much to make this "game" worth my while... it is possible to play completely for free if you're willing to spend literally days sweating, it wouldn't be so bad if the items didn't deteriorate at the rate they do and you then have to pay pretty steep prices for the repairs. the graphics weren't unreasonable, have seen better, have definately seen much much worse... didn't have much trouble with lag, but haven't played in about a year and half... I'm sure there are some people that are able to make a profit of the game, but that will require a huge investment to get to a level where you're able to deal with the beasties that drop the good stuff (investment of either time or money or some combination of the two) All in all it wasn't for me, but I didn't think it was quite as bad as some of the people in this thread have been trying to paint it of as, just don't expect to make a lot of money off of the game and take things in stride. |

I was going to restart my subscription to this game, but after installing it all over again I found out that my game KEY has expired, now they want me to buy the same game again.... I can guarantee them it's not going to happen, I enjoyed it when I played, just like most every other MMO I've played, but I'm not going to buy the game twice and pay a monthly subscription for what they offer... It's not that good!
Especially when my game KEY for other games never have expired even after longer absenses from the game then I've had from FFXI. I don't care about them deleting my characters, I would most likely have done so myself, but they went way beyond that... So, if you want to take some time of from the game, make sure you know how long you have before your game KEY expires, not just before they delete your characters... |
