Did Arenanet provide evolutionary, revolutionary, and paradigm shifting design?
General Discussion « Guild Wars 2 5/14/12 12:08:26 PM
Based on the beta weekend gameplay it is a good solid traditional MMO, with some slightly evolved public quests ala WAR, rest seems fairly standard MMO design. Looks great and is looking good to be a really polished entry in the MMO market. Do not understand those hyping it as a the second coming. It will be popular because it is free, if there was a sub fee it would be judged just as harshly as TOR etc. |

Fallen Earth: Front-Runner for the Sandbox Crown
News Discussion « General Discussion 12/02/11 1:22:21 PM
I love FE (been a subscriber since launch) and even I would never call it a sandbox? Are we so desperate for a genuine sandbox entry into the genre that we are willing to include a game just because it has a half decent crafting system? The fact remains that FE is firmly a themepark game in structure. If you don't PVP then only content you have is quest content. The economy is nowhere near EVEs, in any way really. (I have a 55 million skillpoint character in EVE too, so I can make the comparison). The only vaguely sandbox attempts I have seen lately were Perpetuem and Earthrise (although in the case of Earthrise I rather feat that is simply because they couldn't afford to make any content :p). Fallen Earth would barely be a hybrid for my tastes, but maybe that is just because I dont partake in their PVP. It's a great themepark game, and that shouldn't be a bad thing. It is a perfect antidote to the heavy fantasy menus we get served by most every other game. |

If a triple A MMO was to launch without PvE...
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 11/17/11 7:37:04 AM
I'm in the no camp too, at least partly. The thing is that even in the most hardcore of meaningful PVP worlds people still want something to do while playing alone. That means you must have PVE content of some kind. EVE is a great example, even if you end up enjoying the 0.0 PVP or espionage eventually you still do a lot of PVE activities related to that. A good sandbox PVP game would still need that 'day to day' content that was not conflict based to remain interesting. |

Firefall: GStar Trailer Hits the Airwaves
News Discussion « General Discussion 11/10/11 7:40:59 AM
How so? Both are shooters so the mechanics ARE the game, and both promise an open world and persistence. That is what will make or break both Planetside and Firefall for me. If they manage to actually have a persistent open world then I am in, none of the 'resetting' bs from the original planetside (which was almost the best game ever made if it wasnt for its lack of persistence) I'd be looking forward to both and hoping one of them actually manages to pull it off. |

alas I doubt a AAA studio will ever make a game for us :( We seem to be a tiny minority and not worth their big budgets. So I would not hold out hope |

I worry that offer is a little too good. I might actually be tempted to downgrade, although I think my wish to support a smaller dev team might outweigh that, at least as long as GF don't start using it to over-push the store. |

The two gold limit doesn;t effect free players at all. Hell, you wont even get two gold until you are well past level 60 (and really by then if you enjoy the game that much I would definitely consider going freemium). Only a bitter veteran would really have an issue with the gold limit. In fact the gold limit is a great thing as it helps prevent gold spammers from using free accounts to harrass us as much :p AoC has way more free content than say LOTRO as an example, you really won't notice the restrictions until you invest serious time in the game. If you were genuinely a new player and only tried it at the weekend and felt effected by any of the free player restrictions there is no way you actually gave it a fair chance |

TSW: can somebody explain the hype to me?
General Discussion « The Secret World 7/29/11 8:47:35 AM
Originally posted by Getalife Actually, they said in the last dev video that gear with stats would be the primary means of progression since there were no levels. Gear will be how they gate content and you will need to get the better gear / bonuses to bring out the best of your skill cluster skills to be able to take the tougher challenges. So no class and no levels yes, but there will be a strong focus on gear. They did say hwoever that the gear would not be visual and you are always free to wear what you like for appearance, which is kinda cool. |

It's been corporate for quite a few years now, I always prefered the community feeling of Dragoncon to CC, but CC still has it's merits - I would never otherwise get a chance to say hello and sometimes chat with actual comic folk (and they are still there, hidden away behind all the galm of the TV and movie folk), I just avoid the PR folk pushing the latest teen craze and wander by the actual indie comic booths, who are usually chatty, approachable and pretty cool :) |

Number of Xfire players more than dobbled
General Discussion « Age of Conan 7/18/11 10:28:51 AM
I'd guess something broke over the weekend, X-Fire renamed the game from it's old Hyborian Adventures moniker to the new 'Unchained' I am going to guess it screwed stuff up for some. The server was just asbusy this weekend as last (at least on Crom and the new B&G server where my characters have been hanging out) |

Fallen Earth is also worth checking out..it is the closest feeling I have found to pre-NGE SWG...not the biggest population, but its single server so there are plenty of folks to play with. |

If they actually nail the persistence this time I am in :) Not liking the EVE styled skill system though as it doesnt sound like its too friendly to long term success and new players being able to compete |

Blood and Glory rule set announced! No Bori!
General Discussion « Age of Conan 6/14/11 10:38:56 AM
Originally posted by Daffid011 It was a feature added to the Border Kingdoms open PVP area. Basically you mined rocks and brought them to an altar for 'sacrifice' and in theory anyone could stop you (the rocks could be looted if you were killed), but what ended up happening was people farmed it in huge zergs that couldn't be touched and the carebears ended up getting high PVP levels just from collecting the rocks rather than actually fighting, so the PVP crowd poured scorn on it. Guess it was kind of cool for casual PvPers who wanted a good PVP level to compete in mini-games, but it drove the purists beserk :p |

Blood and Glory rule set announced! No Bori!
General Discussion « Age of Conan 6/14/11 10:21:52 AM
Originally posted by Daffid011 I think it just wont be active on that server. They conceeded the fact it was a half-PvE activity and wasn't suitable for a full-on hardcore PVP setting, effectively admiting they added it to allow the carebears to get PVP levels while protected by their friends. So at least they have had the good grace to remove it from this server. They also had a poll on it on the forums and the PVP community was almost unanimous on removing it. |

Welcome to the wastelands :) It's a pretty cool game, and the community is really nice. There are some major, major changes incoming, but overall I think they will benefit the game, so should be some exciting times ahead. |

Why the term WoW clone is not a myth
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 6/14/11 10:12:53 AM
heh, publishers just like making money, so they always want to copy the previous successess. Just look at all the shooters these days :( Bleh, somedays I wish the mass market had more of an appetite for interesting and unique games. |

Blood and Glory rule set announced! No Bori!
General Discussion « Age of Conan 6/14/11 10:11:31 AM
Will be worth checking out. My only fear is that without the rank and file PVE noobs to stalk, we will all be faced with actual PvP and not enough people will like it. I guess the population on this server will most likely be quite low, as the gankers will stay away as they don;t get easy kills from mission runners. I relaly wish it would work, but I think there may be too many self professed pvp 'experts' who will shy away from this because it is hard. |

Why do developers and game companies lie?
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 6/14/11 10:08:42 AM
I am pretty sure both AoC and WAR did actually sell more than a million copies, they 'sold in' far more than that (something like two million for AoC I recall, which is why you see loads of boxes of shelves still in bargain bins :p) They both sold over a million actual copies, but fell off quickly with less than half staying past the free month, then kept falling. You only had to look at their XFire numbers to see they did have that many and lost them. Rift on the other hand appears to be just below the million sales mark (said at E3 last week) and was also falling at the same rate. I say was, because the smart thing Rift have done, different to those games, is start free trials and buddy schemes before the first month is out. That saved them from the same fall. Judging by XFire, raptr and the like Rift is alonsgide Aion right now (with its free players counting) so I would guess we could presume it is floating aorund 300-400K subs having sold 900k units |
