PSA: I'm in beta and Lockstep mode works perfectly, desync is a thing of the past.
Almost every time a major patch is released, yes. It's part of the appeal that the meta changes radically each new league.

That's just a bunch of garbage that if you want to try something new, you gotta restart the entire game with a new character.  Other than that the game is fine though.

In most cases you'd have to do that anyway, because most items aren't universally good to all builds, therefore you'd need a brand new setup of gear.

LOL...the amount that you ppl are trying to make PoE different from D2 is amazing. It's an expansion at best.

Maybe if you didn't actually play the game.

Wont be playing this until they fix the steep angle at which you view the game.

Had they put an angle like Diablo 3 or Torchlight, I would be all over this game...

im pretty sure the angle is the same as in Diablo II, which Path of Exile is trying to resemble...  OK i just compared two screenshots:

and there is a difference, also gave me nostalgia over D2... almost strong enough to make me fire it up again

to be honest, ive spent many hours in Path of Exile, i dont know if they can amount to 24, and ive spent days, if not months (hours combined) playing Diablo II

i dont know if im getting older or burnt out, or both, but i would still prefer D2 over PoE, same goes for Heroes III over every other version or similar game... maybe its the nostalgia... who knows :D

As of this post, i have 1430 hours in Path of Exile (on Steam, i estimate about 200 more from closed/open beta). I haven't spent this much time on a game since Diablo 2.

Better than Torchlight 2...not anywhere near as good as D3.

I just threw up in my mouth a little. D3 and good should not even be in the same sentence unless it's something along the lines of "D3 was good at being a useless polished turd".

At release yes. have you played it recently? i actually stop playing POE because D3 is that much fun.

I think that D3 actually got worse from launch overall. A more dull loot system, no trading, very limited build availability, uninspired legendaries, repetitive endgame content and finally, free respecs.

... or they could go with a decay system instead, thus letting people play HOW they want, which is the whole point of a sandbox.
As always, GGG delivers.
I like the concept, but I imagine that it won't be as deep as they claim. More likely is a streamlined and flavourless system unfortunately.
The LP-system unfortunately killed all my interest in this title. In sandboxes i often want to exclusively dedicate myself to crafting/economy, and not interact with combat at all. In this game i can't do that.

Pretty hyperbole. There are a multitude of builds capable of clearing endgame content without big currency investment.

Well yea that's somewhat true since I cleared game with my shitty gear. All I had to do is get 1 unique shield and stack block close to 75% and as much spell block as possible +60%. But getting better/good gear is boring and tedious since farming (even super hard) maps/bosses and getting jack shit or some shitty unique simply blows. Not to mention "crafting" and trying to get better stats or 6 linked item. Basically, when you start grinding/crafting for better gear is where fun ends.

And that's where the fun starts for some, like me :)

From my experience, beside all mentioned shortfalls of the game, mine biggest turnoff was online currency trading sites. Only way you can trade/craft good end game items without cheating/hacking is by using online currency trading websites or farm 24/7 for months to get enough currency to buy some decent item.

Intriguing as housing sounds, it's still not enough to make me overlook the unnecessarily obtuse and unforgiving skill tree, poor character designs & animations, desync and animation delay, horrible endgame 'crafting', etc.

Still, have to hand it to GGG for continually pumping out new content. Not bad for a bunch of rookies.

the passive tree is actually quite straight forward and well designed. You need to think before you act. Give learning a shot, and soon you'll wonder why people play any other ARPG.

if this game had d3's combat style and better character/item models, i'd never touch another game.

the combat delay, animation, items just push me away. The game has so much potential they need to hire some better animators and performance personnel

Interestingly enough, i have the entire opposite view on combat. The cooldown-based system in Diablo 3 is entirely unplayable for me, and an excercise in frustration. Movespeed is also a huge issue there.
My take on it: Have plenty of skills, but remove cooldowns from the vast majority of them, and instead let a resource determine how fast you can cast them (eg mana, more regen = more attacks before you run out)

Anyone else tired of pointless leveling grind in MMOs that offers nothing useful in the end?

I was playing wildstar beta and all I kept thinking was how I am sick of leveling in these games and want to just raid and pvp ASAP.

Would it not make more sense to start with content everyone wants and enjoys.

The only thing Leveling is good for now is to make people waste their free 30 days of game time so they have to sub after leveling to enjoy the end game content.

So why not start games with NO leveling. Stop wasting time developing all this crap and start the mmo with even more dungeons, raids, crafting, pvp systems,  and open world pvp.

The only reason I can see anyone being against this is people need to learn their class....but really most MMOs are so easy a kid can play them. What is there to learn now, and why not let guilds and groups figure out who is worthwhile. Or just add a brief starter noob zone that last maybe 20 minutes and covers most skills and basic things like how to heal depending on what class they are.

MMOs can also keep quest for rewards and gold. Leveling can be gone but quest can stay for people that like them.

And what do you think that has got to do with a mmoRPG?  I think Call of Duty would be brilliant if you had to quest through a whole virtual world with in depth questing and lore, but that make no more sense.  You want Genre A to be Genre B.    A game that is pure dungeon play - thats cool, but it is a different genre, neverwinter nights style etc.  and btw you DO NOT speak for everyone.

Quest are about lore and connection to the virtual world - you come from the generation that skips story and calls it 'text' and thinks its about the gold.

Last time i checked, MMORPG didn't mean WoW-clone. I find quests to be awful in the context of an MMO, design systems that allow players to create the story.

At the end of the day, once you've beaten the story if you can't handle grinding for hours to min/max your equipment it's simply not the genre for you.

Oh, but i love doing that, just not in Diablo 3.

The problem op is maybe expectation, Diablo 3 is an out and out arcade blaster (to use an old term) it is the modern equivelant of the quartet arcade machine where the gaming satisfaction comes from the adrenalin rush rather than the story and tactics associated with rpg's for example.

I'm finding it hugely addictive and constantly reworking my build and spell/trait/stat emphasis as a wizard, e.g went from electricity meteor to frozen orb based on a weapon drop that had 24% chance to freeze, then switched to arc meteor strike build and a blend of reduced resource stat and crit, and so on and do forth.

And that's the problem isn't it. If you come from a D2 background, you have certain expectations. Diablo 3 is an entirely different game by design, so it's natural for us to feel disappointed. Had it not been called Diablo, i don't think there would be as big a shitstorm surrounding it.

TLDR version: I like PoE better.

Correct, but the whole reason i made this post is because thus far, i haven't seen a single explanation from anyone as to why they dislike Diablo 3, i felt it was about time someone did it.

After having played about 6 hours of RoS, i got bored. I'd like to take some time explaining why.

My perspective is that of a long-term Path of Exile/Diablo 2 player. I will try to touch on PoE mechanics as little as i can (although expect some, it's hard to not touch upon), as to explain them would probably take far too much of my time, and nobody would want to read the 10 pages of text required to go through it. Feel free to ask specific questions though, and i'll do what i can to explain. (NOTE: after my 800+ hours in PoE i still don't know everything).

The pacing is relatively linear still, and after having played Path of Exile for over 800 hours, movement speed just feels way too slow by comparison. Packs are far too small for my taste, i very much prefer huge packs.

Monster abilities are a big factor here too. Monsters having modifiers such as "Nightmare" and "Jailer" i find extremely game-breaking because they completely mess with the pacing, and frustrate me to no end.

The skill system feels extremely limited and cookie-cutter for me, cooldowns are a big factor here. I am fundamentally aganist the idea of cooldowns, as i prefer having a deeper system of resource-management, where you can overcome skill costs by means of stacking a resource, letting you use a skill constantly without cooldowns.

Not having any stat points to allocate, nor having to make permanent decisions to your build is a weakness in my eyes, and removes all character-attachment. Settings the baseline for the game at max level is also something i dislike, a system inherited from modern MMORPG's (World of Warcraft and forward), the Paragon System is essentially what the stat point system should have been like from level 1, rather than being a tacked-on thing at the endgame.

Itemization/Loot Distribution

I still think that the loot design and depth is lacking severely, with certain stats being neccessary for certain classes. This leaves very little room for unconventional builds, and leaves me with a flavourless set of "builds", lacking interesting niches and uses. As far as i know, White and Broken items lack any kind of meaning, (with Blue items only being useful for a short while) and i keep wondering why they even exist in the game.

As for loot distribution, i think that upgrades and legendaries are far too frequent, which instantly kills any longevity for me. I prefer a system with more loot drops, but less upgrades, because i don't get that feeling of AWESOME when good stuff constantly drops.

I also feel that legendaries still lack enough flavour to be interesting, very few seem memorable or have any novelty value.

The whole idea of sockets feels very one-dimensional, in that many drops are considered trash unless you have a socket on it.

Build Diversity

I touched upon this earlier, and there's not much to add really. You can try nearly every build in the game without time investment. In Path of Exile, i still haven't tried half the builds i want to, simply because i cannot afford them yet. This gives me a HUGE incentive to go on, and work towards making them a reality.

While the Adventure mode certainly is a step up from Vanilla, it still feels rather repetitive to me, and i honestly get bored pretty quickly. This is one area where they should have taken a page from Path of Exile, and implemented a randomised dungeon system, whereby you can choose to get absolutely insane difficulty for massive loot benefits, or something easier for a reduction in quantity and quality.

Difficulty Scaling

I feel that the difficulty scaling is done poorly, as you go higher in difficulties monsters just get more HP and DPS. You aren't introduced to any new mechanics or tactics, thus the monsters feel more like hit/bullet-sponges, and less like actual dangerous beings.

In RoS they entirely removed the economical aspect of the game, which is a HUGE loss to me. While i am still very much opposed to Auction Houses (good job Blizzard, credit where credit is due), going to the other extreme by having Bind-on-Account for certain items is a big dealbreaker for me. I'm a fan of economical systems where you at any time can have RNG in your favour and find something extremely powerful that you can trade for other items that benefit your character more. I am an opponent of automatic trade, as i believe that trading should have a level of time investment involved in it, to prevent market floods and inflation.

I realise that what i want out of an ARPG is very different from what many others want, which is fine. I still can't help but feel RoS is not the Diablo game i wanted, nor is it for many other D2-fans. A good game in its own right, but not a good Action-RPG for those of us who want a lot of depth and complexity in mechanics or longevity. RoS is an Arcadey game that feels like it would do great on a Console with a bunch of friends in local co-op (and apparently it does!), but offers little to nothing for the core PC gamer beyond a certain threshold.

I have probably missed a lot of things, and will update this thread as i think of more things.

I'll gladly respond to any mature comments on my thoughts, looking forward to a beneficial discussion on the topic that isn't riddled with fanboyism (if possible).

Thank you for your time!

I'm sorry but the expansion thus far is a flop.  Not because of the story (which is decent), nor the new act (which is fantastic) nor the music/visuals/etc that are very well done (even though there's a SEVERE lack of cut scenes).

The game falls flat in reward vs time investment and also in class balance.  There has been nothing but hotfixes and bugs/exploits being patched since day one, things that even ONE tester would have found and completely break the game.  An example?  Crusaders are using crits from thorns for over 600 million damage and they haven't hotfixed it yet...

The main problem, however, is the loot.  Legendaries are better than they were in RNG from original, but they're still almost all worthless.  You end up salvaging majority of them because they're useless and most don't even have a legendary affix.  And the drop late is so low you never have enough of the Forgotten Souls to craft.

There's a reason why so many people are running Normal instead of even Torment 1 because there's no reason to do anything harder because the reward for the time investment is non-existent.  I really hope Blizzard can turn this around and make these changes necessary because the game itself is fun but a lot needs work.

It's all a bunch of lies. Don't listen to him.

All a bunch of truth, it's just too shallow of a game to hold my attention. Whoever said it was Arcadey is entirely accurate in his description. I played 3 hours of the expansion before i got bored out of my mind and went back to PoE. 825 hours and counting!
