Originally posted by ParkCarsHere My first MMORPG ever was Nexus TK (Nexus what!?), a small MMORPG that had 1,000 people on at peak times during the day, generally more like 300. I paid $10 a month for that, and the graphics were terrible but it had the BEST community and the BEST roleplaying I had ever seen. The community made hunting for experience fun and the roleplaying made the game ever evolving, even though the devs only updated like once a month, if that.

Maybe this is just me, but judging by these forums I'm going to say a lot of other people are having the same problems as me.

I've been an MMORPG player for 8 years now and I just can't find a game that is good enough to be A) Worth the money and B) Fun.

Then the flood of MMORPGs came over the past few years, like EQ 2, WoW, EVE, D&DO, LOTRO, etc. These games are fun at first, but then they quickly fade into boring repetition. Yes, you EVE fanatics have found something great in your game: corporation based gameplay that creates ever-evolving gameplay with a whole bunch of people that make the game fun to play. However, for those of us who would like to play that game now, we will ALWAYS be in last place because skills are based on real-time (unless that has changed since last year). WoW ends in a raid fest and, from what everyone says, LOTRO ends in nothingness (lacks end-game content).

I say all that to ask this question: why aren't MMORPGs fun anymore? It seems like the same old stuff keeps being recycled back to us with different graphics, but same old mechanics. Maybe I'm asking for too much... but I'd like an MMORPG that will be fun to play AND worth the money that will keep me coming back to play month after month. If anyone is playing such a game... please, tell me so I can have fun with an MMORPG again!

Total agree but, not all games "sucks", I think that are some games that really offers good things that are not profited enought: The problem seems to be the community (dont flame please). What I mean is that there are lot of people "crazy" about leveling, that goes mad if dont get 10 levels a day and dont get the "best" sword, this are a "lot" of peep that need to be superior than other in the game, that runs doing missions or killing mobs, just leveling the character. People that lot of times preffer to solo cause they get more exp (hey is a mmorpg! is a game to play with others!), also, seems that the games are trying to stay, not advance, just moving with names, attracting with them fanbois.

Instead of this, time ago, I remember games like UO or shadowbane. When I saw the first time L2, I thought it was a crap, "o my god you cant configure your attributes!?" aye, what cand of "rpg" game is this that you cant have "your character", your "alter ego".

At the end, the community, is all, is very strange finding people that "wants to help", and is easy to find elitist hardcore levelers, that dont have any problem being rude with others. Very strange to find people that act "in character", thing that can be really funny I think, no need to talk during hours and roleplay like crazy, just, dont talk constantly about "mobs", live in a hurry of xp and stuff hunt.

I got a friend that is waiting for aoc. He thinks it will be great, with the combat system, the merc oportunity for players, the sieges and casttles, the cities... but... at the end, whats the point! everything will end in numbers, in "wich is the best build", "wich is the more stronger class", "where can I farm"... all this... people dont create a character that really like, creates a character that "owns everything", winning in a game is not the important part, or the one with most level; the fun is the important think.

L2 is quite old and from the first time was presented as a "hardcore" mmorpg. And really it is, it takes LOOOOOONG time to get level, LOOOOOONG time of griding... and long time of "work" to get fun... (personally, I dont understand this philosofy).

In the other side of the balance, seems that wow is really inspired on it, if Im not wrong was the first to put casttles sieges, and city management as "competition" (you fight to be the "one" that rules the city/casttle), it got classes, like Shillien Knight, that are original and combines aspects that other games, that are up to date, dont got, not everything inspired in D6D like lot of games seems to do, and, gorgeous graphics, love the dark elves and orcs.

So I think if this game was deeper in pvp and quest, deeper in competition and kills of the grind, Iwt will be really worth to pay for it.

Lot of you are talking, and justifying, the graphics engine in fron 100vs100 battle... but... ey! rfonline already have it and have a good graphic engine!!

About the fps and the fighting engine, you think that you can have a FPS in a 100vs100? with no lag? you sure the technology of our lines permit to do this? I think 200 people firing together and getting "no lag"... and "aiming" in real time is not possible.

For they that says: What other game got this fighting system or similar - Tabula rasa, neocron2 etc... (and neocron 2 is old enought)

as I said, Im not flaming the game, I was very interested but cant found why is really ... "special", I took a look to the oficial webpage, and still the same one year ago... dunno if people talk about vaporware or whatever, but perhaps the features and the engine was thought 2 years ago and now got old?

As someone said, is one of darkfall promises... so...

and ton of features, yes it gots, when it comes out it bring los tof new things, like the gw system and the ladder system, the skill and the respec/customization system.

no offense, but you have no idea about gw.

This game is announched as "next generation" game:

What do you mean by next generation?
By ?Next Generation? we mean that while Darkfall was inspired by the pioneers of online role-playing games, such as Ultima Online, Everquest and Asheron?s Call, it has advanced features and technology never before seen in online games. We are confident that Darkfall will help to advance the genre further.

so "technology never before seen, andadvanced features":

First of all: Where is the "technology never before seen"? in graphics, I dont see how good graphics are, this is not the most important thing of a mmorpg game for me, but, just want to know where this "technology" is.

What kind of advanced features does Darkfall have?
Darkfall has most of the features one would associate with fantasy based MMORPGs, but also contains elements found in real-time strategy and action games. In Darkfall it?s the players and their actions that shape the world. We provide you with the platform and the tools to engage in grand activities such as kingdom building, politics, strategy, diplomacy, combat, warfare, conquest, and racial wars. We also offer you the freedom and the option to not get involved in any of that if you don?t want to, and to follow a path of your own.

Do you have skill caps?
Yes, skills start at one and cap at 100.

I think the skill system could be great, but, also, could be a crap, if you they put a cap on it, will be the same that leveling, if they dont put it, players will get overpowered characters with skills in sword, magic, armor etc.. what I mean? is that everyone will be the same, will have the same "build", cause you can have it all. So "skill cap" = "levels"?

Racial wars?
Yes. Darkfall has six different main character races: Elves, Dwarves, Humans, Mahirim, Orks and Alfar. Each race has different political standings with the other races. The Elves are at peace with Dwarves and Humans, but are wary of Mahirim, and are at war with the Orks. Everyone hates the Alfar, and the Alfar hate everyone. In effect this means that Elven players may travel to Dwarven and Human cities without having any problems with the city guards, and may buy and sell in stores. If an Elven player traveled to an Orkish city, he would be killed on sight, both by city guards and other players. In Alfar cities, any other race is attacked.

Think this is nothing new... and about conquer.

Can you walk through other players in Darkfall?
No, so blocking entrances will be a viable combat tactic. It is possible to push players and monsters out of the way though, so this tactic can be countered.

famous Guild Wars Body Block.

So "WHAT are next generation games like this"? What are the features no other game will have? conquer ciies (like conan or Shadowbane) RvR (like daoc, war etc...) gvg (like Gw) fully pvp zones with npc and players (like cox)? I cant found where is the "new things", or is just a mix? will be the combat system point & click or something new like Chronicles or Aoc?

Dont give me wrong, perhaps is a very pesimist view of the game, but Im seeing lot of people excited about it and dunno why, I will join it if is a good game, like war, aoc, chronicles, etc... but, Seems that graphic engine is very old, and the features are nothing about "new" or "next gen", so perhaps you can explain me what it is.

Its will be a real MMO so its a p2p.

So... you cant have a "real mmo" free? gw is mmo, and have no fees, and all other the games that are free? like flyff, like silkroad, you can talk about the quality of the server or the patches but you cant say they are not "real", and if you dont pay they arent good. So people paid 50€/$ for WoW and pay a fee everymonth and the updates are really poor, the content is... "sad", so... is a real deal for blizzard, but where are all the thousand of fees going on? where are the new clases/races? where are the new..? in an expansion with 2 new races and some "poor" content that cost 40$ more? .. think before you qualify "free" games like "unreal mmo".

Also the guy that tlak about "noobs" in f2p games... what an elitist shame! games are for fun, you will never get a prize in real life that is worth of the time you invest in the game, games are for fun, and you pay for fun, not to be the best, if you want some real competition go and play some chess.

If you're the pvp vet from DAoC who enjoyed Roaming Emain and TRUE free world pvp, this game is going to be a huge letdown. Another "New Frontiers" honestly. Decide for yourself though.

Never heard this, what I heard is that Warhammer online will be like Daoc Pvp, cause is also, rvr and with the same development concept.

Also, it dont needs to be like Daoc to be "TRUE free world pvp" ... in other way, why are you comparing a fully "old" game like daoc with another that is in closed beta? better said. How can you compare games this way? is like you compare Ultima Online with Tabula Rasa...

First time poster here, so not exactly sure if this is where I should be posting this, so I apologize if I hit the wrong section.

I currently play World of Warcraft, and have been for just after release.  Before that, I played EverQuest for about 6 years or so, with Ultima Online before that.  I guess you could say I'm a "forced casual" type of player.  My real life situation does not allow me to be a raider, and I'm not sure I would want to be one, anyway.  At least, not a hard-core raider.  I also like to mix up my playtime with soloing and grouping.

All that being said, I'm looking for a new MMO to play.  I'm getting rather bored with WoW.  I have one level 70, and about a hundred 20-40 alts running around.  I just get to a point that I get bored while playing, and it just doesn't seem fun anymore.  While I still plan on keeping my account active, as I have numerous friends that I don't mind playing with occasionally, I do think I want to try something else.

I have played City of Heroes, Asheron's Call, Dark Age of Camelot, and D&D Online, but really wasn't grabbed like I was with both EQ and WoW.

I'm not too concerned if the MMO is fantasy based or not, so that's not really an issue.  Just as long as it's something that I could potentially solo in when I wanted to, but wouldn't have to spend all day looking for a group if that's what I felt like doing.  I'm also willing to possibly try any of the games I have played before, as it's possible I found them less than appealing due to being so hooked on EQ/WoW.

If anybody has any suggestions or opinions, I'd love to hear them.  Thanks all in advance for any advice!

- Jolar

As ever I will recommend the games I like:

First of all. City of heroes/villains, you say you already played it so in this style dunno if there is another game you can have fun. For me never though this games stills being funny for me after some time! cause I got bored very quickly, think what it has is GREAT Character development and design, so, you dont get the fun getting gear and being "more than the others", you take fun growing your own toon, with the chance to make it like you want, so, is not best or worst, is yours, and think this is the real key of this games. Also instances permit to do great battles when you got a full team in max difficulty.

Guild wars can be good, but, I dont think, If you like wow, will like this one, foccused on pvp, very elitist and agressive community.

Perhaps you must wait for Warhammer, Chronicles of Spellborn, Age Of Connan... to see if there is something new and/or interesting.

These areas still have things to offer people that don't have 70's and want to go do them, the instances can be rigged that if you meet a certain capability level then it could toggle to a higher difficulty to prevent excessive farming.

Perhaps they should take a look to cox where you have 5 different difs (reputations). Also, think that Guildwars should take the same idea...

Otherwise, feel free to go play the Artifically prepared MMO's.

but, sorry about the question, at last is confirmed that darkfall will see the light? and... what you mean with "artifically prepared mmo's". What does this mean? that Darkfall is... ¿? natural not artificial? so... you know is a game... a computer game... is imposible that is not artificial...

btw, there are some:

- I like CoX pvp but its not a "full pvp"

- Gw pvp is good, perhaps, too elitist

- Some people love wow, other says it is chaotic and fully gear dependent. I hate this game so, better dont tell you what.

- I was in fury test, but, some performance issues (I supose cause the beta state) didnt let me see a good pvp game. Hope the fee mode I hear about dont unbalance it.

Or perhaps

Wait for warhammer or Age of connan.

I challenge anyone to find any forum, or website that releases as much info and as frequently as the Camelot Herald.

www.camelotherald.com/archives.php

www.camelotherald.com/archives.php

Look at these, look at the dates on how often they update and stream information.  Containing patch information, player questions and concerns, constant Q&A's, Frontier conditions, guild achievements, player achievements,.... EVERYTHING!!!

There ARE forums you can use to chat with other players, The CM's and Dev's are not there to chit chat with you, they are there to deliver a game and keep you up to date with current events, and this is exactly what they are doing.

Get over it.

They will never get over it, no matter how often the Herald is updated.

You can explain how nice it is having the vast, vast majority of official information in one, easy-to-use place, instead of scattered around in one hectic, flame-ridden forum with tons of subforums and thousands of threads, but that makes no difference.

So you never use the search engine? You are talking the way that forums sucks... anyway... anywhere and... oops! you are writing on one! and also, if you put "all the info" in one place. What kind of advantage is this? If I want JUST the information on classes? I want to go to classes forums, and then the subforum to select the class I want to. Where is the problem with this? organization is not a bad thing, dont understand your point of view about this... but, OF COURSE, I prefeer this "scattered around" information and "subforums", where I can select WHAT I want to read...

You can explain the cost benefits of not having to moderate an official forum nor dedicate servers to it, which makes the game more profitable for the company, which tends to be a good thing for players, but that makes no difference.

Tends to be a good thing for players? sure? I thing it tends to be a good things for cash. A way to DONT listen players.

You can explain that games with official forums can be as bad as those without, and can release content players do not like just as often, but that makes no difference.

You can explain that any well-used forum (of which there are many for WAR, and this is not one of them)

Then, why are loosing your precious time here?

will contain the same sort of discussion as an official forum, complete with the much-loved flames and trolls, but that makes no difference.

Everything is a flame and a troll for you? If someone dont think the way you do is an ugly orc-troll hibryd? what a ugly world you live :( just avoid this flames and this discussions, you will find everywhere in live, blind people, fans, mad people, angry people... Im not saying its ok, but is the world we build long time ago and people try to attack or defense a game throught things: "good or not good got an oficial forums" (for me is good everything they do for the community, is called forums, is called interview, is called poll, is called.. as you want...)

In the end, for some reason, talking about a game in a forum that is not official makes some people feel dirty, or makes them feel as though their opinion does not count (it does not in any forum, official or not, at least in a development sense).

You sure? you saw that in CoX Devs put a poll for the next powersets? you saw that in the same game are a community forum with suggestions that they are answering what can be done, what they cant, and when they will try to put it on the game? perhaps is cause you are not playing the "right game", where the devs never hear the people, perhaps the game is to big, perhaps... dunno, but I saw other online games where in official forums devs and Gms talk, and listen the community and use the fee money to improve the game the best way for their clients. I hope next games: AoC, War, Chronicles, Marvel universe... any of this! got a community like I described, and like I found in other games.

Some people need the "official" stamp to be secure and to feel as though the forum is worthwhile, and without that will refuse to play the game or use any forum. I do not get it, but hey, to each his own.

Dont think noone is so silly to "dont play a game cause he dont like the forums". I Think is better they got official forums for interaction, but, It will not change my mind to, at least, give a try to war... is necesary be white or black? cant I be gray?

I am still waiting for a single good reason as to what an official forum is needed or even optimal.

Think I give you some ;)

It seems to me that a forum is for discussing a game between players, and such a thing can occur on any forum -

And talk with devs, gms, support...

it is occurring right now! The same topics are discussed on every single forum (overpowered classes, underpowered classes, nerfs, new content demands, etc.),

Yes, and there are "vault" or other things to look at, but I dont think they are "official" and verified by the game owners.

so what exactly is this official forum giving people other than a sense of warm, fuzzy security?

Definetly, think you are positioning in a "defensive stance" thinking everyone is flaming game/forums and there is a war between games and their troops (fanbois) than try to say that everything the "other games" do are bad done; Cause this you are not seeing that everything extra with you can count with is good. You can have a herald with info and news, but, forums will be ok to interact with devs, and create a good community. So, I want the forums AND the herald... as I explained, one can be for the interaction of the community and devs while the other for "official info"...

I was just crusing the other game forums, and I hear something that made my ears fall off!!!!   Theres a big big MMO comming out around the same time as AoC, (I WONT SAY THE NAME)  and it WILL NOT have stealth!!   Will Stealth be in AoC?  I can't see how a game doesn't have stealth, its part of MMO Culture!  I don't plan to play one in AoC because I've played one in every other game i've ever played, but I'd cry if they didn't have it.

DId you hear about GW? it is a great mmo but it dont got stealth cause it can get PVP too unbalanced.

In other way, there was a mod of Neverwinter focused on pvp (ok there were a lot but one concrete that was really good).- BOTD. Battle of the dragons, here, the stealth people isnt too overpowered, except this ones that can hide in sight plan one time and another (shadowdancers). So, all can be controlled, I preffer a game with all kind of effects, stealth, teleport, fly (like CoH) but still balanced so you can play anything, perhaps, the way is to "counter" tactics, so every class/build/player tipe has it chances and the same importance in a team.

I think the idea should be to balance the classes that have advanced stealthing.    I find that most people that cry about stealth don't PvP, or well they Don't TRY to PvP.   People can't run soon as they see somebody, if well ....  THEY DON'T SEE THEM. .

What they did in CoX is to put "detector" or "perception" pluses and put a cap in stealth, I think its not perfect but its a beggining.
