WoW becoming World of Disney/Pixar/Dreamworks... ?

Haha, you guys are way too old for this game now...

If you're implying that Blizzard is copying Kung Fu Panda, perhaps you didn't know that Pandarens existed in Warcraft lore since Warcraft 3 from 2002. Perhaps Dreamworks copied Blizzard, eh?

They were a joke back then though.

Uhm yeah, they were a joke and not a part of the lore, people only WANTED them to be part of the lore of the original game. Saying they were part of the lore is like saying that the Cow level on D2 was part of the lore. So i suppose you want a cow level in D3 huh and will claim that's because Diablo himself called up all the powers of milky hell to take over the world? hmm Jonrd?

Sure, why not? If it's fun. You guys are all so g*dd***ed serious. The ultimate goal of any game is to have fun. Whether it's by [WINNING!], exploring, goofing off with a panda character, or having poke-battles with pets. The onus is on Blizzard to pull it off, of course, but if they do and it's fun, all this complaining is just a lot of sound and fury signifying nothing.

I was afraid this would happen. Coyote, if you happen to read this, I hope you regroup, recharge, and reboot soon enough. Your articles are one of the main things that keeps me coming back to this site. You think so much like me, it's scary. I hope the angry villagers with torches and pitchforks didn't drive you away, because if so, it's a sad, sad commentary on the complete lack of perspective society seems to be afflicted with.

Get back here soon!

It's all relative anyway. For example, compared to EQ2, WoW IS an open world. You can go from the top of a continent to the bottom (minus the Blood Elf area in the EK, which had to have a loading screen to "gate" it from people who didn't purchase BC), and through a variety of landscape types without seeing a loading screen. EQ2's areas, on the other hand, are all divided up.

I can't read the OP's mind, but I think S/He was referring to games that allow you to traverse a large overworld without loads, which is exactly what WoW has, minus going from one continent to another and gated sections added by expansions.

Really, there's no reason to keep beating the semantics drum over this.

Quite possibly the best, most succinct definition of the term ever.

Duel specs? So you can make a spec specifically for dueling? Well, I guess that's a point in TOR's favor for versitility.

I was a little late to the game compared to most. I got it last weekend. I unsubbed 3 days later.

For me, it was just the absolute boredom I experienced. It's hard to put my finger on it. I mean, there was stuff to do, but it was completely uninteresting. Everything just felt... I dunno... clinical. Part of this could just be my preference for fantasy settings. I thought I might expand my horizons, since I like Star Wars, and since the game wasn't being developed by the same arm of Bioware that churned out that abomination, Dragon Age 2 I figured I'd give it a shot.

There just wasn't anything there to hook me. Nothing grabbed my attention and made me want to see what was coming up next. Games that I really enjoy have me anticipating playing them when I get off work. But I never felt that at all. I played a Republic Smuggler, because I favor the rogue archetype. I mean, how does one make the Han Solo class boring? Bioware sure pulled it off in spades, let me tell you!

I know people will tell me I should have tried other classes, but I count it as a mark against the game to make me play a class I don't enjoy just to get more interesting content. I don't want to be a jedi or Sith force user, mainly because it seems everyone else does. I don't like tanking or healing. What's left? Bounty Hunter? Too late to even try.

TOR pissed me off so bad, I've decided to resub to WoW to scratch my MMO itch. Oddly enough, I'm having a blast, and playing a Night Elf for the first time ever in almost 7 years of having the game.

Okay, I'll bite. My sister got beat up by an ex-boyfriend many years ago. The guy was a real dirtbag and deserved the asskicking he got by myself, my brother, and two of our friends. We sent him to the hospital.

In no way whatsoever do I connect the use of spousal/domestic/girlfriend abuse in a metaphor to what happened to my sister. In no way do I relate that to people who love crappy games to a fault, besides the clear similarity between "But the game will get better, you'll see!" and "He doesn't mean to do it. He really loves me!"

Honestly, to hypersensitivity to this sort of thing is ridiculous. Want to fight spousal abuse? Get proactive with organizations that help the victims, or maybe become some kind of vigilante to mete justice upon the perpetrators. Just please, whatever you do, don't try to bring everyone else down to your level of hypersensitivity.

It used to be that a hallmark of good comedy is that someone, somewhere is going to be offended by it. Now it seems to be a roadblock.

"Hypersensitivity"?  Did you find anything amusing in your sister being beaten up?  Do you find anything amusing in anyone being beaten up, for that matter?  Sorry, I've always been this way, even as a child I found it impossible to find the humour in "jokes" which involve cruelty/violence/stereotyping.

It's not a "holier than thou" attitude, believe me, it's just that I literally don't find it funny and can't understand why people do.

p.s.  I wouldn't want other people to react the way I do, it's not much fun being acutely sensitive (huge understatement), but it's a shame you see my post as an attempt to "bring everyone else down to [my] level of hypersensitivity".

No, I don't find anything amusing about my sister getting beat up, but I don't connect that event to every mention of abuse, regardless of context. Now, if we were talking about MMO players who beat their spouse because of game time interruptions or something like that, I'd be first in line with a baseball bat to give the jerk a little medicine. But we're not talking about that, are we?

Hypersensitivity was perhaps too strong a word. Of course people should be vigilant about actual cases of abuse, but that doesn't mean you can't borrow a word as an overexaggeration for emphasis. For example, it's common to see people say they "raped someone/ got raped by someone" in a game to emphasize the fact that they either beat or got beaten by someone in some form of competition in a major way, but that doesn't mean they've suddenly nullified the severity of the actual, honest to goodness crime of forced sexual assault on a real person.

It's all about seperating the real from the allegorical. If you (and by "you", I mean people in general) can't do that, then... well, oversensitivity and even hypersensitivity is going to be the norm.

Bottom line? Relax. It's a joke.

Two things-

1. If you're offended by any of those AS THEY RELATE TO PERSONALITIES IN THE GAME, my bet is that you're one of them and in serious denial.

2. If you're offended by the allusion to spousal abuse, you really need a sense of humor. OF COURSE real, honest to God spousal abuse is abhorrent, but getting offended by it's use as an intentionally exaggerated metaphor that describes behavior that is very similar to battered wife syndrome just smacks of a real need to turn off the "I MUST BE OFFENDED BY SOMETHING TODAY!" reflex people seem to be born with lately.

@ArcheAge (the poster) WHAT GAME IS THAT!?!!? Seriously, I don't care if it's made in Madagascar by a troupe of trained lemurs, that thing looks gorgeous!

View Info on the images has the acronym dnl in the filenames.

Huh... Some Googling turned up Dark & Light 2. I'd heard of the first one, but never paid it much mind. Graphically at least, ver. 2 is looking stellar.

I was doing a Google search on good soloable MMOs and this thread popped up. I know it's old, but I really wanted to comment on something that was said earlier in it: that solo players have ruined MMOs.

I disagree completely. Setting aside the very valid reasons for soloing, such as time constraints and the desire for a little more freedom in gameplay pace, a HUGE reason why I choose to solo is because of bad groups. I'm not talking about skill, however. I'm talking attitude. Get a group of people together, and at least one person or more will succomb to the Greater Internet F**kwad Theory. Control freaks, sociopaths, and idiots that have absolutely no ability to relate with other human beings have completely killed any desire for me to group. I haven't seen a raid since Molten Core was all the rage, nor do I want to if it means having to deal with the results of some crappy parents' lack of ability to raise a kid.

Don't blame the people who choose to take the loner path for ruining your MMO. Blame the jackasses that helped push those people in that direction.

Any quest that tells me to go harvest organs or body parts off of an animal that should have have said organs or body parts in order to f***ing exist, yet has a 25% drop rate can go die in a fire. I'm looking at you, Goretusk livers.

Regarding the world, is it pretty open a la Elder Scrolls? The reason I ask is that in the older gameplay demos from the gaming shows, the minimap shows what basically amounts to an outdoor corridor. I'd like to know if the player has the ability to pick a direction and just wander off the beaten path.

Didn't have time to read most of the other comments, so maybe this point has already been made. If not, here it goes.

The problem as I see it is that there seems to be a growing number of people who hate the RPG aspect of the MMORPG genre and just play for the MMO part. Think about it... one of the biggest complaints I see is how people hate questing. Questing is to RPGs as reading is to books. Unfortunately, both seem to be lost on a big chunk of newcomers to the genre, because they both hate quests and hate reading. I'm not saying that most of the people here are like that, but there are a very vocal few who would make you think otherwise.

Myself, I wouldn't have a problem with covering a worthy RPG here now and again. I'm just not seeing much in the way of "worthy RPGs" in the near term. All the cited big names are just dumbed down hybrid action games wrapped in an RPG cloak, but that's a different argument for a different article, I suppose.

I know, right? I hate it when roleplaying games do that.

Also fuck every EVE player that boughrt a shitty, overpriced, fake, virtual monocle. You're helping sink EVE by shitting all over the game. The least you could have done was curb your purchasing impulses until CCP became much more reasonable about the whole thing.

I read a thread on the EVE forum where some people are making it corp policy to refuse membership to anyone with RMT items, and even going so far as to wardec and make KOS anyone wearing a monocle. I thought that was pretty funny.

I wouldn't mind seeing what CD Projekt Red could come up with for a MMO. Considering they, figuratively speaking of course, ripped out Bioware's still beating heart, took a bite out of it, curbstomped their head to the pavement, and had a good wank over its steaming corpse with The Witcher 2, expanding on that world might be interesting. However, CDPR is still a young company, so I don't think they'd risk an MMO venture yet, since they've taken Bioware's single player mantle away with a cocky grin.

I know, right? I mean, this is supposed to be a game grounded on realism, not some magical romp through a fantasy land. And what's with those cat people? C'mon! Cat people don't exist. They're COMPLETELY MADE UP! Nothing ruins a game for me like having a bunch of made up stuff in it. And don't get me started on the use of magic, I mean HELLO! Magic doesn't exist!
