Star Wars: The Old Republic: How to Improve PvP
News Discussion « General Discussion 1/24/12 5:36:09 AM
It's amusing to me that people say we don't want no stinkin gear grind, but then when given the opportunity to play without worrying about gear they forsake it entirely. Case in point nearly every review I read for SWTOR talked about being all light or dark side because there were no gray options yet not a single person took the gray path simply to take it.
Players talk about all these different things, but when its time to put their money where their mouth is they always bail. Case in point Illum without PVP rewards. No one wanted to play because it was "pointless" and so they just did PVE dailies.
People say we want better PVP and/or openworld but those games but stake their livelyhood on it (Warhammer Online, Eve Online, SWG) are generally ignored. The fact of the matter is that openworld MMOs are ghost towns and themepark worlds are crowded.

I'm a big proponent of story. It's been one of the glaring holes that MMO's have yet to fill. Lately though we see it changing both with the AAA titles (TOR, GW2, SW, etc) and well as the smaller MMO's. Frankly I'm surprised it took this long for people to realize. I remember back in the day when Halo came out, I was like 'Ringworld!!' and I was sold, the idea that we love the characters we play in single player but suddenly can't or don't want story in our MMO's is kinda ridiculous.
I was pleasantly surprised to see how Dragon Nest went about the first three chapters in the storyline. War, Religion, Politics, Truth, Lies, all the good stuff. I loved how the story is shaped by the class you pick even if only in little ways. Each different playthrough gets you a little bit of nuance. Play the Cleric and you hear why you were betrayed but play the Sorceress and you get a little back story about the age old war going about. That's amazing that's what its all about. I love WoW, I thank Blizzard for showing us a new way. Back in the day we were satisfied with the grind day in and day out. Now these days we curse the grind. Maybe a bit too much of an extreme but WoW changed the way we play games and changed the way we look at launches. No buggy messes anymore!! I don't think Dragon Nest is going to set the world on fire but is it and a few other games the start of a new movement, I think so.

It's amazing. I actually am playing an MMO and know what is going on in the world. I can't name a single game where I know or care. |

I'm loving the storyline. I'm playing both opening towns just to get all of it. I admit that Bioware might just be able to completely change the way we play MMO's if they can do TOR right. |

The cash shop is free until the end of open beta. Sorry Fail on that complaint. |

Originally posted by negacrowbar another factor is that it has a cap on runnning quests similiar to guildleves. You have to spend performance points on each duingeon you do and these can run out pretty quickly. So, within an hour or so, you have used up all your points and either have to log or rolll an alt. There is probably a cash shop feature to get more points but I havent looked for it. Actually those points are similar to rested experience points in WoW, you still get XP when they're gone just at the regular rate. |

Who is still playing this, and is there any point?

Evverything is still very counterintutive. It's a good game thats fairly empty content wise at the moment. Besides the story quests you pretty much grind your way through to Level 50. Even the guildleves are really just a faster way to grind. That being said FFXI was a slow starter and FFXIV has only gotten better. It's free, the newer big MMOs (KOR, GW2, SW, Tera, D3, and B&S) havent come out yet and are at least 3 - 6 months away. Frankly there's little to no downside. Even if you decide to leave it in a few months, you could always come back and have a high level character once the new content and expansions are out. I'm enjoying it, along with Vindictus, its the only game that doesnt feel like a different version of WoW out right now. |

Just bought a new rig and look forward to making FFXIV my number one MMO. At the very least until SWTOR comes out. Lets face it most MMO's take at least a year to start moving. FFXI didn't have chocobos to travel between cities for the longest time and WoW took 6 months to get their server issues right. You couldnt even skin in druid animal forms for months. Alot of the problems are or have been fixed. And lets face it some of the reviewers were playing on systems that didn't meet the minimum requirements ala PC Gamer which is another story in and of itself. |

I always look at join dates. Doesn't everybody? |

I know like alot of people I bought it digital because it was 15$ off. Plus those numbers dont include places like Walmart who reportedly sells something like 25% of all games sold. Considering its been less then two weeks, I think they're doing just fine. I don't even like Sony and I cant fault them on DCUO. Ofcourse chat is a godforsaken joke (no blacklist?!), but thats something for another day. |

Just ahem... rented The Blood of Heroes, otherwise known as the Salute of the Jugger. Real good movie, I was impressed. Held up well after 20 years. |

Sorry your ending was atrocious. Anyways I like Aion, I can't see myself playing much long term because I don't really enjoy PvP that much, and if theres one thing NCSoft is known for its pvp. Still I think it will launch as well as one can expect, but face similar problems because of too many people stressing the servers.
