Not even close. WoW will remain the dominant force. (as always)

Of coarse it will. Most people agree and are just having fun with another one of these threads. It will sell well becaue of KOTOR, but i dont see enough of an mmo for it to be a wow killer. Lucas is probably the only ones out of the loop. And EA's investors expecting a return. Short some EA stock before launch IMO.

This is actually great advice especially if they float this release around some of their console sports games too, some quick money to be made there ;)

As far as killing WoW, no game will accomplish this in the near future.  I believe in the next couple years though a game may pass it's sub numbers if a game evolves enough and goes worldwide.  I don't think any MMO for a long while will get the sub numbers it had at it's height.  Blizzard has a very strong fanbase and they brought alot of other non MMO players into the genre and set the bar pretty high for other companies.  I didn't play WoW long but I definitely enjoyed it while I did and felt I got my moneys worth.

Other games... not always the case...

Know what I mean?

That's how I draw my conclusions anyway, dunno about the OP.

The answer is re-roll.

Alot of players that hit level cap, will re-roll and also do dailies with their main. There's 10 class to play and that's a ot and can keep players for quite some time.

That's why the failure of other mmo is they fail to see how WoW design their class, their world, their quest, the detail that Blizz put in etc...

Im really wondering, those devs of other companies, do they still play mmo anymore? Or their last mmo is UO or EQ?

People reroll alts in almost every game they play, it's not unique to wow and what exactly is it that makes wow classes so spectacular?  Personally I found wow's classes completely uninspiring.  Give me a bard or shaman in daoc, stalker or defender in coh , or a shaman and witch hunter in war.

People continually talk about wow and their quest system is so much better.  You know what I've found, the mechanics are exactly the same as any other game.

Quests:  Go kill x mobs, deliver a letter, talk to a guy, fish, cook, travel alll over.    Just because wow has people addicted to doing daily quests like gerbils to the dinner bell doesn't make it better, it just means people are easily manipulated to punching the clock for a few gold.

All true, but I would rather a game keep my interest without the need to roll alts although in this day of gaming I'm not sure if it's even possible anymore to get that much content and diversity in a game.  I think the hardest part is making thousands of players feel like their character has an impact on the entire game world.  Some deep storylines and questlines can do it in a sense but only for so long.

I think too many players find comfort in boring quests (or actually like the kill x mobs quests...) and it's become a backbone of too many MMO's to deal with the "grind"

The game that can eliminate the grind all together and mix some of the best parts of what people are looking for is the only game that has a chance to possibly break the mold so to speak and dethrone WoW in it's current state.

Only the insensitive will "forget" there are real people playing a game with them in the first place, right?  Most would simply ignore a rude comment from someone like that.  Offended enough to open a  ticket?  Go right ahead, that's what they're there for.

Not being able to distinguish genuine, malicious bigotry from thoughless comments only exasperates this sad situation.

Exactly, I ignore rude comments and most bickering in chat channels except from a comical standpoint.  I could see possibly this hurting hardcore role players and people who get deeply into the immersion of the game and playerbase.

Myself I take it as a gameworld and no matter what part of the world or society you currently live in there will be immaturity and bickering the only effects it has on you is what you allow.

Agreed, since I haven't had the chance to play the higher levels and PvP the wealth of information in this thread alone helps me understand more and alot of what I was thinking is being confirmed.

They don't try to deceive.  They just try to take what works from multiple MMO's and make a hybrid of it.  Rather than the same boring system from start to finish they start out with a quest heavy linear PvE progression and it turns into an all out war between factions.

If you don't like the game concept then simply don't play.  No single playstyle is being forced down anyone's throat because of fans of another playstyle.  The game is what it is, and that info is readily available.

This 100%  I don't remember ever seeing this game advertised without PvP, it's a big part of the game and story

Some people who have played WoW will get bored with Aion some wont. When will people learn that there is no one answer to what qualifies as a good game. There are so many different opinions about WoW and the same will be true for Aion.

This pretty much sums up everything perfectly.  WoW was an evolution for MMO's much like EQ before it.  More and more they have become mainstream entertainment pulling more and different types of gamers in.  I started in DAoC but I have many RL friends who began MMO's in WoW.

No game will hold every players attention forever, some will go on and play Aion while others will try and return to WoW or other games.  It's a cycle all MMO's face as many people have stated a game can make a profit without WoW like sub numbers and be successful.  As long as you enjoy what you play, there's nothing really to argue.

If the game has looting of players, I doubt most people will play it and they will be out of business in less than a year.

However, I seriously doubt Bioware would do something like that. They're too savvy for that.

QFT

Full player looting and FFA pvp would severely limit this games chances at success. The company's goal is to make money, not drive away a significant portion of the potential playerbase.

Opens the doors to too many types of griefing.  The PvP in this game will be difficult enough as is, I agree and seriously doubt Bioware would take on a task as daunting as FFA looting and PvP as it would drive away more customers.

The game is far from release, but I believe they will has a decent working system for PvP up and running, and will improve on it even more post release.

Lol... I came here thinking something similar, the title is definitely catchy figured by page 4 would be much more joking about the subject but I guess it could rub (pun!) people the wrong way :)

I'm not sure why people are comparing Aion to WoW. From my personal experience, it's more of a mixture between Lineage 2 and Everquest 2. From Lineage 2 it inherited the art style and world PvP system (although faction based this time). From EQ2 it inherited the PvE style and some of the crafting elements. It also uses the exact keyboard mapping with EQ2.

The more I think about it, the less similarities I find in the game design.

This is exactly what I was thinking.  Aion is pretty polished for being in a released state for so long overseas, but it's no where near as polished as WoW being the top MMO on the food chain for so long.

They are based on two different types of playstyles and cater to different kinds of players, just because they have some similarites doesn't mean they can be compared on every level.  WoW wins the battle on pure subscription numbers alone, players can argue what they want but if it comes down to success WoW has the subscriptions and made MMO's more mainstream than even EQ did.

Do you realize what you're asking here? The Guild Wars model only works for Guild Wars because it is not setup as a traditional MMO it's not even an MMO, it's online and multiplayer that's it.

IF Aion was F2P, which only means F2 download btw, there would have to be other means of making money and keeping this boat afloat... Which means yes the infamous cash shop. Take Dungeons and Dragons Online just got free to play or did it? It retains it monthly fee for regular and VIP players who get access to everything in the game, but the free to play people will have to buy access to certain areas (and other stuff I think). Convenient for the very casual player and just annoying for those who have DDO as their main game.

There's no such thing as free to play.

Sums it up nicely.  You lose far to much in game development and balancing to make it free to play.  The later level PvP cannot be balanced, as more people play and reach the higher levels new content and balancing will have to be done and that costs money.

Console games are like movies, you spend all the money up front and hope your game comes out and covers the cost and increases your profit margin.  MMO's work to a different tune, box sales are only a portion of possible profit, if you make a great game and keep customers coming back you have a chance to increase profits but theres a fine line to what your spending to keep increasing balance and content.

I didn't even get out of the AoC free trial... but I didn't expect much going in much like Tabula Rasa and a couple others.

I think biggest letdown is all about hype... City of Heros I only played about 4 months but I expected nothing going into that game and was often pleasantly surprised and it held my interest longer than I ever expected.  I think Warhammer is moving towards the top of my list but mainly because I had such high hopes going in after the great PvP game DAOC was and the more fantasy setting Warhammer has.

Also agree. Loved DAoC, one of the best MMORPGs ever, despite nerf bats, other problems, and it's death by TOA.

WAR was a big disappointment. I was hoping for even more epic RvR AND great PvE, and instead I got a solo quest game with instanced scenarios. WTF?1!!

This.

Sums up 90% of the playerbase feelings.  Expecting a polished great RvR PvP game much as they did with DAoC... got instanced PQs and broken sieges and abilites galore.  I still play and loved this news it gives me some hope but I'm also in Aion beta and looking at other PvP oreinted games.  War had the potential for something great, it's slowly sinking it that it may never become that and this news may have come to late.

Something just occurred to me.

The three month wait for the transfer...

...this gives people who start a brand new character on the NA1 to catch up to the people who will be transfering over to NA1 in 3 months.

Makes sense to me.

Sidenote:  I purchased a Chinese Aion account so I could test out the game and see if it was anything special.  I do not expect NCSOFT to give me an American account for free.  Nor do I expect them to transfer my characters to any NA server from the Chinese ones....

...just food for thought

Indeed, infact they will still be ahead of people. If I am correct EU servers will have been out longer then 3 months when NA ones come up. Sure you can't take your gear, but your skills will be ahead of fresh characters on them.

This and character limitation is what scares me most about the NA servers.  I understand the reasoning on character limitation originally having only one server.  I do not understand the transfer option, skills seem far more imporant that gear initially.

Dear MikeB,

I appreciate the subject of this peice and your thoughts on the matter. After reading the article I was was genuinely excited to play this game and to read further on possible class ideas. I took this article as: A speculation in your mind of what the unannounced classes MIGHT be. I'm not taking this as SW:TOR gospel. It doesn't matter if you're COMPLETELY wrong, because to me you did this game justice. You excited me about the future of this game, you gave me that ol "star wars nastalgia" feeling in your article, and for that I thank you.

I was however very dissapointed in the comments section of this peice. The general negative attitude about your article astounds me. This is after all a game, based on a fictional universe...Might as well have fun while you're waiting for the release. I'll probably avoid reading the comments sections of future articles, as I went away with a bad taste in my mouth

Regardless, I wanted to show my support for the mood your article was trying to create.

-Xanthas

I completely agree here, the article was great aside from the negative overtones.  The game is far from release all the information being released at this point is pure speculation.  I guess all the buzz is great but it should be directed towards improvement not chopping down ideas that could add interesting dimensions to the game.

They are increasing the "continous" rewards for holding a fortress in 1.3 from what I've read.

I saw this somewhere as well but didn't see a full update about it.  I think it would only help the PvP aspect of the game although specific types of diminishing returns or assistance for the attackers who have not held for extended periods of time.

I think Mr. nichol has done his homework, it is his job, after all. Its a matter from opinion, I myself would argue that SWG had useless classe at launch, maybe not from a sandbox lover's standpoint, but definitely from a business standpoint. Bioware is not trying to make the disgruntled SWG vets dream game, they are making a title to compete with WoW and create enormous amounts of revenue.

I agree.  I think they are working hard to build classes each with their own niche in the world.  This is a difficult task since the masses want to play jedi and sith but I think they are taking the other classes seriously.

Aion is WoW clone, bad WoW clone is bad WoW clone.  Nightblade is an effing Retard for playing such a fail game till max level.

Btw.....  I'm making a Elyos Gladiator when Live comes out, name Pezhunter, hit me up.

Oh and Aion sucks.

Lol... This post wins all :)

Every MMO has origins from other MMO's nowadays, calling them clones is almost as funny as this post :)

End result, I dont see the big deal.  It seems like most of you want your jedi power trip from pre nge back.

Facts are.

1) Normal people can kill jedis in large quantities (Reference star wars movies)

2) The game is going to be balanced and is going to include 8 classes regardless of what you say

It's just that simple.  Saying that a balanced mmo would not be star wars is folly.  Are the lord of the rings movies not really lotr because a few things were changed.  Is a book with a lenient interpretation of the cannon not a star wars book?  There's no reason to make a big deal over nothing.

Exactly this.  The game is far from release and beta has not started, I'm sure they have balance in their minds.  There is plenty of information out there about the less experienced Jedi meeting their fate.

one word... greed.

Simple yet dead on target...  Mainstream games must cover the needs of so many different types of players, to keep customer base up many companies just resort to the easy way out.

It is very much like wow.

Wow is much ilke everquest, they are both everquest clones.

Ppl have got to stop assuming wow is somehow the origin.

Agreed.  Every game has some type of origin nowadays, you could even dare to trace back MMO's to text games and before that from table top and card games.

Point being, each game has a piece of another, maybe it tried to improve on that piece or maybe it used it to build a whole new system or just expanded on it.  Calling games clones is almost nonsense at this point.
