Ok, Miss, there are a handful fundamental errors in this thinking. Not what you may expect though.

Guerrilla Metaphysics: Phenomenology and the Carpentry of Things

The current fashions in both mechanistic and fantasy gaming are staunchly anti-metaphysical. There is supposedly no way to talk about the gaming world itself — the gamer is confined to antiseptic discussions of objects, language, or of other modes of human access to the gaming world. We should not aim to reconcile these tensions, but instead, free metaphysics from its anthropocentric residues and reclaim it on behalf of a direct contact with all nonhuman entities. This is the main objective of an object-oriented gaming philosophy which should be comprehensively laid out and pursued step by step. As a "carnal phenomenologist" and a "guerilla carpenter" we will find the pinpoint immediately beyond that acute sense of gaming nothingness. Imagine a novel written by Alain Robbe-Grillet

oh yeah well, yet another imaginative leap and a take on the distinction between the two warring factions.

Based on considerable sociological insight, drawn from Max Weber, it is fair to say that Rift is mirroring a modernist versus anti modernist sentiment in its distinction between Guardians and Defiants.

so....

Guardians are the Taliban (faith in Vigil, religosity and blind belief, oh and no televisions) and Defiant are the modernist, NATO alliance (American, Europe and bits of Canada, but not those really freezing cold bits up near Nova Scotia ...brrrrr .. those bits prolly really belong to Russia anyway) .....

I for one would think that lots of repetive high rate traffic would make it annoying to govt. agencies that decide to do snooping.

Hmmmm so governments are more predisposed to using their military machines for ganking? Oh I am gonna play the saboteur in Rift ....

I am glad you're not in charge of some military, because that isn't really how the US army fights.  There's a lot of logistics and tactics going on there.  Sure, it may be an overwhelming show of force, but in part that's because it's so well coordinated, and the technology advantage is HUGE.

Zerging implies mindless swarming with individually inferior troops, not caring about individual sacrifice because you have SO MUCH MORE that it doesn't even matter.

That's the whole POINT to the Zerg.  Just because you're apparently down on the US Army doesn't mean you should attribute qualities to them they don't have.  In fact, the US Army is so odd now that even with casualty rates far lower than in any other large scale military campaign, it is seen as being incredible amounts of deaths.

Sure, on an individual scale it may be tragic, but it's no Civil War.  Another way the US Army is like the Protoss.  Losing individual units hurts a LOT more.  In two fronts... they cost a lot more to develop and train, and secondly because it looks really bad politically and with civilians, even on a smaller scale than in historically normal for wars.

lol, what do you think "shock and awe" tactics were all about? Blitzkrieg type bombing is zerging in my book.

wot ... oh yeah right ... join the American army for the best zerging you have ever experienced since the old emain style DAoC.

Man, no modern army zergs.  That's so outdated as a tactic.

Seriously, you can't just rush in and overwhelm with numbers.  If you look at the way the US fights, even in the most recent Iraq war, they were actually severely outnumbered.

US is more like Protoss.  If they also happen to outnumber you, you're DOUBLY screwed, but they dont' rely on brute numbers, but rather superior technology, superior communications and quick response, and improved strength per unit.

it is a distinct possibility that MMOs might be used to help the American military machine, the army training schedules and preparation for overseas military tactics - that is ....

ganking, griefing and zerging .....

It's a propaganda and recruiting tool at the very least.

The US army produces shooters, not MMOs.

MMOs would require a distinctive server technology, i.e. high running cost.

Even Guild Wars who is buy to play is heavily instanced, to minimize server traffic necessary to play it.

A game that is given away freely, like the US army shooters, would therefore be too expensive.

Fun fact: The USAF used Starcraft to train officers about crisis and joint service planning. :(

I just don't understand why no game has done this since DAOC... I understand that devolpers want to model their game after the World of Warcraft one for the simple reasons of the income they've generated.. But when you look back to or hear now what people miss most about DAOC it was the kindred spirit they had in their faction and the hatred or dislike of the other factions..

Secret Worlds is planning on a Three Faction RvR type end game.

Unofficial - Briarcliff - the ex DAOC RIFT server

To continue the pressure on Rift to consider something akin to a DAoC endgame pvp open server (old emain style) this was posted on VN boards. Keep the pressure and campaigning up peeps, someone will eventually listen.

http://vnboards.ign.com/rift_general...4398807/p1/?33

Hey guys I have started a campaign that all of the old DAOC players, be it Defiant or Guardian (I will go Guardian personally) Should roll on Briarcliff and stick together.

This is because of the mindset we all know other DAOC players have, and that mind set is: COMMUNITY!

I made a post on official forums, but since they have been so flooded I have had a hard time grabbing peoples attention, so I came here knowing lots of old DAOC people would read these forums.

Here is my original post:

http://forums.riftgame.com/showthrea...ity!&p=859276& amp;posted=1#post859276

This idea started out because I love to duel, and I remember days back in DAOC sitting at the keeps or in front of the portal in Aegir having massive duel contests. People dueling each other, there were people RENOWN for being unbeatable in duels and others would line up to get a shot.

I remember I had to have my EGG artifact, even if it wasn't a good template item after a while I used it only to cure res sickness when I would duel! That Artifact was slapped on during dueling congregations and it was worth it, because we would sit around talking and dueling for, at times, a few hours!

I miss this sense of community, the sense that people would challenge you to duels whenever and, being on a pvp server, it was your duty to accept that challenge and stand up for your manhood! You had to prove yourself baby! On the guardian side we had a lot of fun people dueling in Sanctum last night for a few hours it was going down, and this game started to give me that feel again. If we could group up on the same server we could have a blast!

tl;dr

Lets get more DAOC minded people on Briarcliff for release/head start, we can even start our own guild. But it doesn't matter if we even all roll the same side because what matters is that we get the majority of like-minded people in the same server and hopefully can have a server with some realm pride and open world pvp action!

Now, not to say this doesn't mean we won't raid...I love to raid! But I miss the days when MMO's used to be about FUN and COMMUNITY rather than progression. Progression was important, but it was a RESULT of community...LETS BRING THOSE DAYS BACK!

What's so funny about it? What if they plan to play togheter, and he 's convinced that ranger gives a worse experience for both?

Prenuptial agreement crashes rather than server?

Then it wasn't meant to be in the first place. Big effing deal.

wow !  you guys are all "so serious" ... chill out. I was being ironic and sarcastic. Blimey .... Who cares what the universal law is about posts, its still funny ... and I am laughing.

Feel the love between hubby (assassin) and wifey (ranger) as they peak at level 50.

ummmm, are you OK?

Whats funny about this?

Does this really deserve a thread? on mmorpg.com ? Really?

Ummm it tells us something about the condition of modern marriage ... something that all MMO gamers should be concerned with ... ha ha ha .... Seriously, you dont think its funny that some hubby is posting about his concerns that wifey wants to play a Ranger on a MMO forum?

I nearly died of laughter when I saw this post on Rift forums. This hubby Hurst is seriously concerned about his wife wanting to be a Ranger. Look at the post and the responses. Its a hoot.

Default My wife wants to be a ranger ......

how do i convince her that assassins are better? or am I wrong and why?

Femmmes Fatales... I think I remember them from DAoC?

If so, that was fun, as I successfully entered into the guild disguised as a female and successfully lesbian'd many wonderful women. Does that make me super awesome or does it may me gay for the fact 3/4ths of those women were ALSO secretly men successfully entering the female-only guild?

Regardless, the first secret was to be stealthy about it. *taps nose twice* The second secret was to be successful about it.

Yup DAoC, Excal, Albion. Well at least 70% of us were genuine. Ermmm it wasn't supposed to be about sex, was supposed to be about RvR ... hic :) Pass the Gin and Tonic ...

Idra is getting owned lately... maybe zerg is UP or hes not adjusting. The word is out he plays the same style too often ..

someone said it was all because "Korean men all have the same hairstyle". Plus they have fabulous dandruff repellants.

Is it true Koreans are the best PvP Gamers?

/enuf said, but I came across this post discussing Korean gamers.

"Koreans dominate the online world of Starcraft .... REPLY .... "I'm pretty sure it's a cultural thing. The computer and anything tech-y is their thing and their form of recreation. Because it's a popular past time they spend a lot of time and therefore are skilled. "why are Americans so good at football?" or along those lines. But then again, it's important not to get bogged down in those 'stereotypes'." Having played with Korean and Vietnamese gamers in Aion Beta it is palpable how competitively serious they are about balance/build and strategy for PvP. Also whenever a Korean player joined a random group it was like "respect man!"

and this ...

"Do you think you could beat a pro-gamer from Korea at Starcraft or Warcraft? You can't. You won't. You don't have a chance in hell.

This clip is from the excellent documentary The Hax Life, which takes a look at some pro gamers competing in the Korean capital, Seoul. It's at times touching, at times frightening, and at others, just mind-bending."

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YCncvc3ASN8

Pro-gamers ... gawd .... Professional gaming has legal status in South Korea.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Actions_per_minute

Or perhaps it is simply down to APM. The truth is Koreans have higher levels of APM

"Professional e-athletes in South Korea have APM in the range of excess of 200 and often exceed 300, sometimes exceeding the 400 mark during intense battle sequences. Notable gamers with 400+ APM include Kim Taek-Yong and Lee Jae-Dong. Park Sung-Joon is noted for the record APM of 818"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Actions_per_minute

I have to add, Rift is AWESOME, I have played 3 beta testers now, and it is the most polished, compelling and enjoyable game I have played since DAoC. The class (soul) combinations are unique and make for very distinctive game play. It also looks very likely that there will be OPEN PvP style endgame (think of DAoC New Frontiers) in Port Scion. The game play is smooth and engaging with great graphics and visuals. If they get the endgame right Rift is going to knock the socks of all other MMOs out there, possibly until Secret Worlds is released (with its unique 3 Faction Open PvP)

If people don't have the system requirements that is really unfortunate because they are missing out on the best MMO release for a decade. Rift will be the game of the decade.
