WARNING : I will be using WoW as comparison examples, just to explain my logic, not to bash. I played WoW for 5 years, enjoyed it. (Also only played FF11 for 1 year...)
 

You start off by stating that a point had been made to avoid the comparison to WoW...and then offer the warning that you will be comparing the game to WoW.  Further, in stating what you appear to state as having been wrong in other threads; you actually offer no premise that what you say will be any different...

Okay, a good point has been made in another thread, stating that most of us FFXIV enthusiasts are focusing more on preaching to people as to why this game is not like WoW is a good thing and showing hate towards those kind of games; instead of explaining to those unaware or on the fence as to why we think this game is good despite its immediate flaws! So here it goes: an attempt at that explanation.  If anyone has anything constructive to add or any point to debate in a constructive manner, please feel free to do so.  Thank you.

Failed logic is fail.  The OP shouldn't have used a game that is still in production to compare to a game that is soon to be released.  That was my original statement and I stick by that.  Videos don't do a game justice and in his own words said it was a "guesstimation".  I think I see your King....Checkmate.

Comparing still in production to soon to be released with an MMO is failed logic. Case in point active MMO's are constantly
"in production" as for example they will be adding more features "approx 6 gigs" when FFXIV goes live as well they have more features "in production" down the road such as PvP.

I think you missed my king, plus you can't checkmate. Troll isn't a legitmate chess piece.

Artstyle is subjective but I personally think its great, granted I wished there were more variety of races, since im not a huge fan of FF11s, but the world and its characters, in most aspects including animations are amazing, the cutscenes while full of Asian cliches and cheesyness are more engaging than most things you will see withing MMOs, including the upcoming SW:TOR which focuses more on stiff conversation trees, both are down to preference however.
 
 
Your "review" lost all credibility for me after reading this statement (in red).  You have no idea how the SW:TOR conversations will play out, but yet found the need to compare it to the game you are reviewing.  A review without credibility is pretty much not even worth reading.

Actually your post lost all credibility due to the fact that youa re ignoring the many in game cutscene interactions already posted of SW:TOR. I think you need to spend a little bit more time researching your opinions before posting them biasedly.

Aside from all the nay sayers and new game haters.

FFXIV's graphics are suprisingly awe inspiring. Just a background on my opinion. I started playing MMO's when EQ launched. So I have gotten to watch the evolution of these games. And by the way I hated FFXI, avoided WoW for 2 years after it launched. I ducked into the F2P games before they really got popular. I have seen the ugly and have seen the beautiful. I have played, Guild wars, Eve Online, Silkroad Online, RF Online, Warhammer, Age of Conan, and countless others.

Age of Conan & Final Fantasy XIV have the most advanced grapics I have seen in any MMO.

Diffrence is you need 64bit OS to see how nice AoC looks. FFXIV graphics are off the chain, the detail is immense. I thought AoC and warhammer had deep detail. FFXIV has captured my visual appeal, I am mistified how great this game looks with all the textures and effects at max.

The graphics style is very anime like vs the realistic look of AoC or WAR. I like to make a reality check on the GW2 fanbois. GW2 gfx look ugly, all the gfx in that game are just brushed up from thier old engine, they are blotchy and disguised by over used shaders and light effects. FFXIV has combined smooth model detail with amazing lighting and shadow detail, add in thier physics engine and I cannot help but be jaw dropped amazed at how fantastic a job square enix did on this game.

As for the gameplay and combat. Well that will be improved over time like every other MMO. This game has a competitve look and feel for a launch title and I am confident it will hold its own. It will be nice to play something diffrent for a change. And yes I know blah blah grindfest. There isn't a single game out there that doesn't make you grind something. Now stop hating and go play what you want, to each his own.

The Furians were all wiped out by the Necromunda, Only one survived. He now leads them. For a complete history on the events watch the true to life documentry "The Chronicles of Riddick".

It's totally legit, nothing shady.

 All I have to say is BAHAHA. Where did you guys get those figures from? A cracker jack box. Now I am a long time player, but those figures are way off base. 1st off where are you getting your sources? Blizzard made a very public announcement months ago they were losing a sizeable amount of thier subs. As stated a third of those lost subs return peroidically, fact is WoW subs are declining. I know its hard for WoW fanboi's to accept, but thats fact. As for solid figures, we will never know, since blizzard and every other major MMO developer guards thier sub numbers voraciously.

There will be no mass exodus, just a slow decay. WoW will not cease to exist for a long time, but it's hay-day is over.  All thier good Devs left around the Ulduar release. This is evident by the lack of unique or eye catching model designs, rehashed boss fights and general lack of anything to do besides grind ICC for loot....

Reality check complete, please continue your regular trolling....

Now for my OC take on this.

The Sandbox is idea is ever growing thanks to games like Eve Online. The problem right now is genre identification as you have heard in this thread "no one can define a sandbox". A true sand box in not fun, period. A true sandbox will never be a AAA MMO. This is fact. Why you ask? A true Sandbox would be too empty and unwelcoming to a large portion of gamers.

So you say now why support a sandbox game? Best example, Eve Online. Center core of the world is Theme park PvE, the outer reaches, free open sandbox. The center core of the eve universe is where you build the basis for life in the sandbox, and the sandbox inturns rewards the themepark with added content. CCP designed a very strong example for the future of sanbox games. They even took it a step further by raising the bar, One Server. So now you have a persistant universe that houses 300k+ players, you have empires and wars for resources or reputation. You have an industry and a living economy. Its not perfect, nothing ever will be buts it is a great example of what any game could do to be a successful sandbox.

Why is WoW bigger than Eve Online you say? Because Sci-Fi is a niche genre, not cause its a sandbox. Most ppl want to play people not spaceships. WoW also had the most rewarding game system as it was designed to have all the things players hated about current MMO's of the time EQ/FF11/AO removed. WoW was more accessible and had great intial intro area's vs the current games out at the time. Over time WoW then won over players due to it having the larger population/community, like today alot of ppl play WoW because a friend does. I know I have gone back and played WoW due to friends wanting me to play.

Sanbox hybrids are the wave of the future, no doubt. But the market is still just getting into MMO's being mainstream. The guys who started WoW, used to play EQ. WoW exists because a EQ player said I can make a better game. Just find a game that is fun for you, and wait for the horizin, a new WoW is overdue and everyone knows it. They just need to put a game on the market that delivers a diffrence like WoW did to EQ/AO/FF11.

There are lots of places for the Electronic Arts, BioWares, NCSofts of the world to spend their money.  Why should they invest that kind of capital into an unproven game that has to deal with the likes of World of Warcraft in an industry that is VERY competitive (take a look at how many MMOs are on this sites list....expecially considering most of them are F2P) and has turned out rotten egg after rotten egg?

Blizzard has opened the doors of MMO gameing to a market of people that consume their entertainment from everything from Farmville to EVE Online.  When one of the Activision / Blizzard bosses came out and said that WOW is competing against Farmville for peoples time, he wasn't joking.  Its sad that MMO gaming now has to lower the bar and get down on the level of social media games to hold those folks attention.....less they loose subscribers.

 Intial outflow exists in any game developement. But no non-MMO game has the potential profit value a MMO has. MMO's only real added costs are servers and a Dev/support team beyond what a normal studio's game developement costs have. So yea there are additional expenses to keep in mind, the risk is not far from what a non-MMO game par takes in.

Like my numbers stated above, aside from competition, MMO's are profitable, way more so than non MMO's, which is why all these developers are making them now. Blizzard did set the intial bar, the fact they are trying to compete with games like farmville is pretty sad, but I think they don't understand most who play farmville have either not heard of WoW or are not interested in spending money on a game. MMO developers need to stick with trying to recruit from these pools rather than lower themselves to thier levels.

I don't want to play a game where non-PvP play is treated as the shallow end of the pool.  Eve is a very entertaining looking game and I'm very happy to see it succeed, but it is aimed at a fundementally different audience and I don't want to dilute that community.

 I just want to inform you that PvE in EvE is not the shallows. PvE, is an integral part of the economy and the community. Without the miners, haulers and mission runners the gaem would be very tame. PvE players build the PvPer's ships and fuel thier space stations, moon installations and various other infrastructures needed to run a player run empire.

The problem with the majority of people that play get stuck on is accepting that you will not get to enjoy the game without immersing yourself into the community. Getting into a Corp you can trust and flying all over the galaxy filling the niche you choose. Its a tough game when your actions have consquences and who you join up with may build or destroy your reputation.

They don't make big money, therefore no major development house is going to touch them. Many smaller Indie houses keep trying, but as you mentioned, Earthrise, Dawntide, all the same, under-funded and very rough around the edges.

 

 Last I checked, any triple A MMO that charges a subscription can make a very decent bank as long as they scale thier buisness and content with thier growth and don't slack off.

$15 dollars a month x a 500k subs is 7 million a month, thats alot of funding there.

WoW has like 10 million subs, thats 150 million a month.

Even the lowend 300k sub MMO's make 4.5 million a month, thats over 50 million a year. Thats pretty enormous budget for any market.

 

Every company wants to get into MMO's, they are just trying to find the laziest and most profitable way to do it. Developers don't care about you. Thats the main issue now a days.

Beta is nearing an end. We are all awaiting launch and more details of what the endgame has instore for us!

Draconian Collective will be using both.

We have a primary dedicated ventrilo server and a backup non dedicated TS3 server

Good thing it's beta and moving around isnt that big of a deal!

I would like to say I really like your perspective on things. I have personally pushed the boundries of what makes the status quo top tier end game guild in games I have been apart of so I know your feelings on not being the cookie cutter gamer. I feel you will really like it here with us and your welcome to come join my menagerie of members on Figaro for the beta. We are currently working with three other linkshells that share the same ideals so that we can provide our members with a large community for the Beta and if all goes well, Live. I will never demand nor force anyone to play a way that they do not.  Progression content is voluntary and you'd be suprised when you don't force anything on your members how far they will go to succed thier way. In WoW, my guild raided 3 days a week for 4 hours a night, no more than that, and we were right alongside if maybe at times a boss behind guilds that raided 5 days a week 8 hours a night. Breaking the mold is what I'm all about.
