Check out Aion, Champions Online, Jumpgate Evolution, and Fallen Earth. All are coming soonish. Some have betas that are very easy to get into. Aion can supposedly be played using the Chinese servers with a English patch. There is some great stuff coming up. JE is coming soon, but I would't hold my breath expecting it on time. I didn't like the original JG very much, Earth and Beyond was way better than Jumpgate and Eve combined but i still expect to check out Jumpgate Evolution. I've heard mixed reviews about Aion, but it also looks pretty good. Of course you stil have to wait for these games so nobody can really speak to population size/ bug issues. |

Originally posted by tinroofr I think we may have similar game tastes... I've also played a number of games over the years, including many one the ones you mention above (WoW, SWG etc) and now that it's back, I quit my WoW subscription and went back to Ryzom. Compared to all of the crap out there these days, WoW and SWG, are probably the only games next to Ryzom that ever managed to keep my attention for long. (of games from the last 10 years or so) The crafting system in Ryzom is better than SWG imo, but the economy has some flaws. All equipment is also player made, which, again, is nice in my opinion. The biggest flaw is the abundance of gear, but to combat this, all gear does decay over time, forcing you to buy new player crafted gear. The biggest complaint that I hear as it pertains to the economy is that the gear decays too slowly, but they may fix that, thus improving the economy. Stargate Worlds is dead. I too was looking forward to this game, but we've already passed two release dates, and instead of moving forward, they've shut down the beta. Ryzom originally released BEFORE WoW, but the graphics are comparable. I personally don't care about grafix one way or another, but the only real complaint that I've ever heard about Ryzom grafix was that the person didn't enjoy the stylized art. WoW is also stylized or "cartoony" so that shouldn't be a problem for you. The PvE system in Ryzom is great, and better than WoW imo, but Ryzom is definitely more of a 'sandbox' game than wow. By 'sandbox' I mean that there is no linear direction with with you must travel through the story. You are free to chose whatever path you want. Unlike some other 'sand-box' games out there though, i feel that Ryzom still HAS a story. There are 3 week trial right now, so you may want to at least give it a try. Only $10.95/mo after that, so cheaper than WoW too! (Even if you have 'tried' Ryzom before I suggest you give it another try as it was recently bought by a new company, and once again new content/bug fixes are being added. I hope to see you in Atlys! http://www.ryzom.com/en/ I don't PvP, so I can't really speak about Ryzom's PvP system, except to say that there are completely PvP zones in addition to the Main world. Also, you can always invite another player to "duel" with you no matter where you are. There are GvG battles as well, and Guilds can even own outposts and fight over their control if they like. If large scale PvE is your thing, then Ryzom also offers the occasional monster raid. Where the Monsters raid our cities! (Kitlin raids). Those are always fun too! P.S. About community size: like Eve, Ryzom is played on one persistent world, however the community is divided by international, French, and German servers. I don't have #'s for you, but since the re-release less than a month ago, the population on the international server has been growing every day. (the international server is the least populated server I believe). That being said, the world of Atlys is so big, that you could probably avoid contact with all human players if you had a mind to do so. Grouping is fun and can also play a large part if the gaming experience if that is your thing.

Simple poll: Do you want twitch based combat in your MMORPG?
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 6/01/09 12:45:20 PM
I voted no. If I want a twitch based game I will play a fighter game like Mortal Combat or something. That isn't to say twitch based RPG's don't have a place in the genra, I just prefer not playing them. In a way though, it does defeat the purpose of, and the reason why many people fell in love with the RPG genra, which is the fact that one doesn't need good hand-eye coordination to play. It's the reason why I always prefered playing them anyway! I also prefer a a non-twich based game because I can take my hands off of the keybord, possibly go afk while fighting, or simply so that I can chat AND play at the same time. Correect me if I'm wrong, but I don't don't any twitch based games that enable you to chat while fighting unless you want to die or you are talking on some kind of 'team speak' system. |

Try it, I've always felt it was far better than WoW ever was anyway. Never really played AoC for more than an hour or two. There is a 21 day trial, and after that it is 10.95/mo for a monthly sub. http://www.ryzom.com/en/ |

You may want to try Ryzom (formerly The Saga of Ryzom) It's a RPG game which also has a strong RP community. You can solo, group fight, or even join a guild for large PvP or GvG action. This is not a turn-based game. In fact many would call it "sand-box" rather than linear. I've heard mixed things regarding Vista. Some people have had little to no trouble getting the game to work with Vista, and other simply gave up trying. The point is, that the game DOES work with Vista, but you may need to look on Ryzom forums for installation instructions. Judging from the games you liked/ didn't like, I would suggest giving this game a try. there is a 21free trial with unlimited access I believe, and after that a P2P monthly subscription. You can also buy game-cards if that is your thing. http://www.ryzom.com/en/ |

I think anyone who has played Ryzom for a while can agree that Dappers have pretty much lost their value, but what can be done about this? I'm just looking for any ideas or constructive suggestins for improving the economy. I think that having the majority (if not all) items be player made is a positive aspect to the Ryzom economy. I believe that increasing the decay rate of items, or something along those lines would go very far in decreasing the supply of gear. Perhaps even lowering the amount of durability givevn to an item. Now, I don't want to see every piece of gear with 5-10 hp, but I would have no problems with all of the crap gear that I make out of crap mats for the sole purpose of grinding to have low durability. New players have helped the economy some, but I disagree with the opinion that it would improve the crafter harvester to non crafter/harvester rates in the game. The crafting/harvesting system in this game is just so great that I think many players are going to want to play these professions. Since I just took a multi-year break from the game, I would personally hate it if the following suggestion were implemented, but perhaps even the mats themselves could decay? I wouldn't want to see this happening while offline, but maybe while online, and even while sitting in your pack, mats could decay in a way. Not by lowering quality, but by lowering quantity. This could be a slow process, and one that is even slower if the mat is being stored on the Metkub rather than on your person; but I think that this plays well into the RP/realistic aspect of the game. Our mats are all 'natural'. Natural things spoil/ decay/ go bad. You could also create a type of dapper sink, by offering "storage containers" that would lower the rate of decay for your mats. This process could still be fairly slow; but it would lend a "use them or lose them" aspect to these perishable items. They would need to charge outragious prices for "storage containers". Decay on tools: Perhaps they would need to add 'special' tools for this to be attractive, but this may work as a Dapper sink to some extent. I wouldn't mind having to carry 5-10 extra pick out with me on a harvesting trip. As I wore out the picks, I could replace their slots with the mats I was harvesting. Again, I think this may only be an attractive option if there were "speed picks" or "gentle picks" pics for increased rate etc. While you would gain these bonus' to your harvesting time/ efficientcy, you would also need to spend more Dappers to do so. Special tools would also have to be super expensive. Of course there are always the traditional "money sinks", mini games etc, but I agree with the idea that many players wouldn't necessarily invest money in these sinks if it wasn't necessary. Having to buy new crafting tools, or having to replace gear at least once before you "out-grow" said gear would be a big plus in my opinion though. Ok, this is not actually a serious suggestion, but if they wanted to do something drastic, they could create an entirely new currency at the same time they made changes to the economy. Dappers would still be useful to purchase some things, but basically the npc's would gradually (maybe over 3 months) switch over to the new currency, and eventually not accept Dappers! Again, not a real suggestion, and something that would probably cause all the vets to leave, but I get a little chuckle everytime I think about all of the "bill Gates" becomming paupers! They could always place a NPc in a high level area to do "currency exchange" but only give 1 'dipper' per 10 Dapper. lol They could even keep the dapper, and just require 'dippers' for special items. Then the devs could play with the exchange rate (only allowing dapper to 'dipper' exchanges) whenever they needed to tweak the economy. Much like federal banks do when the print money or change interest rates. Any thoughts?? |

LOL, I'll just combine the two! I love to explore, and I love to dig. As I've said before, there is nothing better than escaping danger while searching for new areas to harvest. I would also mention that harvesting by itself is an adventure! As others have said before, this isn't a case of "run around" and pick up things lying on the ground, or even a simple click and get mats; harvesting can kill you, but that's half the fun! It's challenging, dynamic, and interactive; by far the best harvesting system I've ever come across. I wont dwell on the past so I'll just say that I only recently re-activated my account and since then I've just been reaquainting myself with my avitar and my skills before venturing back out into the more dangerous areas. |

I still regret giving away all of my things before leaving. I almost want to check ot ver. 3.5 just for the trip down memory lane. Good to hear that the game is still alive. p.s. you should post a link for this mysterious v.3.5, cause the Astonia link from this site still goes to Astoia III website which still lists the 10/mo fee. |

This game was ahead of it's time when it came out and it still is. Ya, you can't open a "shop", but Ryzom's answer is way better! NPC's will open a "shop" for you. Actually there are dedicated NPC's who you can give your goods to, set you price, and who will then sell your mats or crafting goods to anyone who comes along. You immediately receive the 'base' price of the item, i.e. the price you would get for selling it straight to the NPC vendor, and then you are immediately credited with the difference between base price and your price if anyone chooses to buy your stuff. HINT: you can keep items for sale for up to one week, at which time you may take your stuff back from the vendor or let him dispose of the junk. Use this feature to "create" temp. storage for yourself; charge an outrageous price for the item and let the NPC hold it for you. If anyone actually buys it, all the better cause you are now rich! Also, in regards to player controlled cities: there are Guild controlled outposts and an extensive PvP system which I am unfortunately unable to speak to, but it's obvious that this guy never made it past the newbie stage. Awesome game btw. I played the original beta and am so happy to finally see it back! Have fun. |
