I know, it infuriates me too and I'm writing the damn thing : )

Mega grindy + Bad graphics + Simplistic gameplay + slow uninteractive combat = Boring to all but teenagers and a very, very special breed of casual gamer with waay too much spare time on their hands.

You have just described every MMO released before 2007

This article was written atleast a dozen weeks ago, and lets face it EverQuest 2 an expansions coming out every year - I'd be the first person to dance around and scream that SOE are shovelling money into my back pocket. Not the case unfortunatley.

Surely what your saying is countered by the fact that at level 20 in LOTRO you have to pay for quest packs? For me at that point grinding mobs for exp is more restrictive than EQ2's model? I feel that your love of a certain developer is clouding your understanding of the article. I could play EQ2Ex untill level 25 without having to pay a dime.

"The character creation process is relatively sane also, the usual clap-trap of races and classes  is here except for a few that are restricted"

I think you logged into some game other than eq2 extended. Seriously this is the biggest nickel and dime money sink out there. Everything in this game is restricted:money, chat, race, class, bank slots, bag slots,spell/ability levels, number of quests, broker, equipment, character slots, shared bank slots, etc.

Did you even bother trying some of the other ftp games to compare? Seems to me you just like the eq series and did zero research in declaring this some kind of value. This is the poster child of how not to do ftp.

In all fairness if you were to check back through the websites history I have done a number of articles on Free to Play games.

I want to stress that this series is not essentially based on the quality of the product because I don't want this to descend into "you said nice about X how dare you think it is better than Y"

This series of articles is for those in the community who ask "how free is this game?" I'm looking for the most free of the free games and in my opinion, EQ2Ex wasn't half bad, SOE have allowed for a number of hours of free-play and while they're are restrictions, they do not restrict progress as much as they could do. As stated in the article, I spent 1 day and 8 hours in-game playing, thats a fairly decent amount of gaming for the price of nothing right?

It's a very hard position for MMO writers to be in when talking about newly launched games. Anyone with an unbiased and neutral position will find it very difficult to balance actually talking about gameplay and offsetting this with the various bugs and trappings that come with a launch. What this article does is give an impression of gameplay and I feel Garrett has not mentioned too much about the launch state because it could change within a days time or even as long as six months - the fact is though, the bugs, glitches, lag, all the rest of it will be sorted out at some point. Does MMORPG.com slam a small-time indie game because of its lack of polish at launch or do we take a balanced view and say "yes its not perfect but let's concentrate on what really matters and that is gameplay".

Good list, great to hear ATITD getting a shout out

MMORPG.com . ... thanks for rating the game a little better I guess but next time you may want to have someone over 20 who is actually willing to play the game long enough to give an actual review.

Its blatantly obvious that he hasn't really played . .. and has the point of view coming from a 20yr old who is used to the latest console game graphics, etc. LOL

Sorry but this is a pretty FAIL review .. . please have someone age 30+ review the game after the next expansion!

If the game requires a month (or more) of indepth gameplay before it becomes fun, it isn't worth reviewing. (three times)

I am surprised myself by Sid's response. I wouldn't have thought Darkfall, with all it's hardcore old school cred, would have been home to the rabid fanboism that has unfortunately engulfed many other games. Sid, correct (civilly) me if I'm wrong, but your response came off as "You don't like it?! Well you're... DUMB!"

EDIT: I also strongly agree with Quake. If a game takes that long to begin to enjoy, it stops being a game. You shouldn't have to suffer through a month (that you're paying for) to enjoy a game. I realize I'm about to be flamed for being a carebear or somesuch nonsense, but it's a game. Those are supposed to be fun. Remember? I don't need to be l33t from day one ingame, but I should be having fun.

I don't mean to be rude but I doubt that someone who is 20 is old enough to see their vision and what they are doing unless you have been gaming since you were born . .. I guess but still most of my favorite games would be considered crap by todays average 20 yr old.

I very much appreciate the review, I would just have picked a different person is all. He didn't seem to want to play it at all. Read the survivor thingy he posted before that.

I would rather have someone who was into way into EU or UO when it came out review the game. Coming from other types of games is a very difficult adjustment, especially todays gamer who is spoiled from easy MMORPGs and high-graphic solo games. They definitely tend to raise the bar higher imo but lower in areas that do not matter for many of us old-school gamers.

But if you have someone review it who already likes that kind of game, the review will be biased. But I also agree with you. Honestly we have to accept that reviews will be biased (like Anthony Lane's review of "Watchmen" in the New Yorker which was horrific, and barely deserved the minimal honor of being called a review). The only way a review can be in the middle is when the writer understands where the media in question is coming from artistically, but isn't already a fan of other, similar media.

Its obvious to any player that he hasn't played . ...

First paragraph is the most obvious:

"Throughout the past couple of months I have been chased, beaten, robbed, murdered and taunted. A simple task such as travelling a dozen metres into the woods has left me emotionally scarred as a result of the numerous online-brigands constantly pursuing me. In reality I have become a quivering wreck: a short journey to the local shops is spent with panicking eyes, a twitchy mood, and equipped with a small blunt weapon just in case someone takes fancy of my jeans or indeed, my trainers - If someone so much as eyes my jacket, there will be panic swings."

LOL seriously?

He was playing cataclysm or something haha and looked up some info about Darkfall and found some photos from over 2 years ago ..  .. revisting Darkfall after 2 years! I know, lets use 2 year old photos! . ..

The first time someone did a Darkfall review he gave the game a score of 2/10 and only played a couple hours LOL (AV checked the logs and were enraged just like the community was).

He probably would have been killed only once or twice during a 2 week trial unless he was asking for trouble or not paying attention. He makes it sound like there is actually PVP all over the place. The world is HUGE! I call BS that he played beyong making a character and maybe getting killed by some goblins.

Sigh.

The review is proceeded by a 'Survivor' Series of articles that accounts for around 3 weeks of play. I have played the game for roughly, a little more than two months and actually enjoyed it. The content of my review is not overly negative so why blindly pick on what I said that was bad?

As for my age, yes 20 you may feel is a little young. Well if it makes anyone feel better, I have been gaming since the wee age of 2 with my Megadrive and then graduating to PC Gaming for the advent of Windows 95. I bought and played EverQuest on release with my dad and even a little later played loyally for around 4 years on my own. Nobody was more into EQ that this kid here, I adore the game even today.

If you want to go over my MMORPG credentials go ahead, I have played every major release since 97' and still continue to do so. Sure I didn't put in time with Atari consoles, Commodores or Spectrums but we are not all perfect are we?

Like most reviews, this review is very superficial and tells little of how the game really is, such as the very low population, and the majority of the game's population spends the majority of their online time macroing and afk swimming because the "grind" aspect of the game is so long and consists of mindnumbing repetition.

It wasn't mentioned in the review, but the in my experience with Darkfall, the population was not an issue at all. The Elf and Human lands which I spent time in were active and the only time you could get any respite from the paranoia of murder was the early hours of the morning. Also on that note, Darkfall is a game that succeeds with a smallish population just because the majority of the opening stages are spent avoiding others in case of attack.

*blush* I foolishly put Deathclaw instead of Deathwing. It was either a mistake or I was being playful with words and undermining a Blizzard dragon with Fallout references, you decide. EDIT: also 6pm, not am. Just read my articles and follow the foot notes to actually understand it : [

FAIL again this topic and you placed some very old screenshots also even a greater FAIL:(

Im convinced if you made a topic about WoW you would have placed newest screenshots.

Your whole survival(it seems was more of a copy of what you can find on internet) was carefully wriiten with whines about it then acctually write a real survival story and how you can enjoy this game.

I have again my serious doubs you have played Darkfall.

And why even mention a silly Dwarf thats famous not realy for his ingame action he mostly try kill newbees seem not worth famous status, but his FORUM WHINES AND CRYS are famous he more quit then stay subbed he whine and cry becouse he want solo kill 5 newbees instead 2 and when he get ownes by 5 newbees he come over to forum and nerdrage quit and say Darkfall sucks.

Again this trend of mmorpg.com writers about Darkfall have misrable failed to write down a nice story about a game thats worth more and deservers more then you guys give to this game credit for.

You OP and your colleges before you are not realy FFA full loot fans and that shows:(

Pls stop write this way about Darkfall you hurting it more then this small indie developer derserves.

Darkfall is great game and i can tell you that there are newbees who can tell a story thats way more positive and show how good COMMUNITY can be in helping them then your silly Dwarf loser encounter, and sneaky mention bordedom and grind sad realy sad that you guys dont even try be bit enthusastic about a small game as Darkfall is real shame:(

Have a nice day.

Sorry if you feel this way but honestly, you have totally misinterpreted what I have written. I am enjoying the game greatly and the 'sneaky' mentions of boredom and grind is well...true? there are elements of grind and standing around for hours clicking the left-mouse button. Is this a bad thing? For some yes, but, let's not forget that some people actually enjoy grind and at times I can count myself amongst them

The mention of Ginger is completely from my experiences, I try not to watch forums before I write these Survivor articles as it would dull the sense of naviety and adventure that I try to have when approaching the game. I have played this game for days and I am enjoying it rather than trying to soil its name. The next weeks article is a little different, but you'll have to wait for that one.

Planning on a review after the third edition : )

In the grand scheme of things, is the score really that important that a debate should rage for this long?

Sifting through community posts would tell a different story at times but I think people are not really taking the game in the spirit of how it is meant".

Amen.

       >>>>>  LoL @ You're doing it wrong

I have not played the game and have no opinion on it personally but this excuse used by perma-fans, particularly people that are supposed to be professionals, is insane.

There is no right or wrong in player perception.  Reality is reality.  If the majority of players say the game is broken, buggy, and the developer is not trustworthy or follows through with anything he says then that is the reality.  You can sprinkle sugar all over it and it won't change the facts no matter how much you hold your breath or squint your eyes.

I'm not saying that there is a wrong or right way to play a game. What I'm saying is, with sandbox MMOs, if you don't take the adventure and excitement from the little things, then the genre is not for you. If you throw yourself into the experience and take everything in the spirit and context of the setting you will get more enjoyment out of it. You don't play something like Call of Duty and pick out every single inaccurate point and gameplay element. Anyway...thats what I meant.

Hey... I disagree with much of what Mr. Tingle said... that's OK though as everyone is allowed their own opinions.

What I have to take exception to however is this closing line:

if it meant a few hours of entertainment and supporting a company who truly have the communities best interests at heart – hell I’d recommend this game, us old timers need this game to succeed,

What? I mean... that is a STUNNING comment to toss out without any support whatsoever.  This is a company that STILL has not shipped their promised replacement DVDs to customers 6 months after launch.. Not only that, but they ignore countless requests for updates on it.

Well.. I'm not going to get on a soapbox.  I will simply say: Be VERY... VERY wary of any "review" that claims to know how any company has the "communities best interests at heart".

I think the developer does have the communities best interests at heart, at the very most I think they can be somewhat poorly organised but I don't think there scheming or plotting anything untoward. The DVD issues aside, StarVault are trying to create a sandbox MMORPG that many gamers have been crying out for for nearly a decade - in return they get a lot of flack and abuse that makes them out to be Scandinavian na'er-do-wells.

Not saying anyone is wrong for taking umbridge to my marks for 'potential' but, I think (in this genre in-particular) that future potential plays a big part in attraction. When playing this game, for myself, a draw is the fact that I can see that this game could improve drastically beyond anything on the market currently. A good example for my justification is the RPG 'The Witcher' that game was broken and unplayable for most, but at the core, man what an experience - would you have dismissed that game as a 5 because of its initial release?

Also, you wouldn't play an MMORPG that was uninspired and had nowhere else to take it, the fact that Mortal Online is still playable and enjoyable - then add that the game could be absolutely awesome with a few content patches, I think it deserves a few marks for that. But that's my opinion and I respect anyones grievances with it; so just ignore the score and read the review. I find scores arbitrary and mostly wrong according to my tastes anyway.

I think your wrong, Eve Online had potential initially, this was realised and now it is a classic of the genre. You look at a game such as Age of Conan and it's good but doesn't really have the capcity to change much; MO however, has a real scope to change into somethin absolutley ground breaking.

Yeah sure and the Karate Kid learning how to paint and wax wasn't just about painting and waxing. I see where you're going with this RajCaj, you can't fool me!

In all seriousness though, what you just described is a very outdated version of what sandboxes have already done. Ultima Online did that ages ago, there needs to be something a bit more revolutionary included in todays sandboxes if it is going to draw any real appeal even from the sandbox crowd. Or else we can just go back to playing pre-Trammel UO and I wouldn't be surprised if some do to this day.

By the way, when was the last time any cool bad-ass heroes you read/watch today include killing various forms of rodent animals for their weapons training? I believe warriors of the medieval age were trained by...wait for it....actual trainers. Maybe sandbox developers should start from there and not the smack-the-training-dummy type variety either.

If sandbox games are to go anywhere, they should focus their game around skill development systems and player economies. That's where their advantage lies.

I think your misjuding the fact that most people who want a Sanbox MMO don't want that - they want hard grind and animal genocide, its a coded into our gaming genes as the word 'lol'

I suppose it is a double-edge sword with the in-game map. On the one hand I would have found what I was looking for but on the other I wouldnt have had the adventure or experience that I had. That's why I suppose MO is such a unique game and certain choices such as not adding a map really add to the chaos of it all but sometime it can lead you in unexpected and fun places.

It is true I try and keep this game as a new player perspective type thing, I try not to research it too heavily. I hold my hands up and apologise for the mistakes, my time in NAVE has been spent between Vaada, Meduli and Fabernum so I haven't come across red friendly places. Plus nobody would chat to me as I was a murdering fool so I couldn't find out that way.

As I said a review is coming, I just thought this would be a neat little series to do about a game that is quite different from most games out now.
